Highway Thru Hell Community Last week, the Discovery Channels

docu-reality series was launched, about real-life drama on the Coq in the winter. As material for guy-adventure TV, you wonder why no one thought of this before. The highway from Hope to Merritt has some of the steepest grades, and the most severe, unpredictable winter weather of any freeway, anywhere. Judging by the first episode, there's no end of dramatic material. Flipped cabs and ripped trailers shut down the highway, as amped-up voice-over narration talks about the economic lifeline of a nation and a race against time. The Province Its very entertaining, check the schedule for times: www.discoverychannel.ca On September 1st, at approximately 1:30am, Merritt RCMP were dispatched to a complaint of an assault on Coldwater Ave. Police located a male who was lying on the sidewalk, bleeding from a head injury caused by a baseball bat. Police are seeking witnesses who may have seen the assault, and are trying to determine the motive behind the beating. This investigation is ongoing. If anyone has any information, they are asked to call the Merritt Detachment 378-4262 or Crimestoppers 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).

September 10th, 2012 marks the 10th anniversary of the World Suicide Prevention Day. Local counsellors will be hosting a Suicide Awareness booth at Coopers Store from 10am-4pm today. They will be available to provide information on risk and protective factors, creating safety for those at risk, and resources available in the community. A Soles for Souls campaign will be held to remember those we have lost to suicide. New or gently used shoes can be dropped off, at this information booth or with local counselling agencies, in memory of an individual lost to suicide. Shoes will be donated to individuals in need through a local charity. The psychological and social impact on families and communities who have experienced suicide is enormous. Come out & learn more about reducing the risk of suicide, strengthen our community and remember those we have lost.
