S3 Knox Academy Standard Grade Homework Booklet 1

Choose two tasks from the booklet every month. Complete both tasks throughout the month. (Dont leave it until the last minute.) Make sure you use your own words at all times. (Copying from other sources is strictly prohibited.) Get a parent or guardian to sign your work. It is your responsibility to ensure your homework is handed in on time!

Task 1: Choose a favourite song and listen to it carefully a few times. Write a detailed essay (minimum 400 words) including some of the following things: Your interpretation of the lyrics what points do you think the lyricist was making? How well does the tune fit the lyrics? Does the rhythm play a big part in the song? What about volume and tone? What impact do choruses and riffs have? Whats the overall feeling of the song? What does it mean to you?

Task 2: Write about one of your interests or hobbies outside of school. You should include details of how you got involved with it in the first place, what you actually do and what you enjoy about it. Write a minimum of 400 words.

Task 3: Choose a character from a film youve watched and do a 400 word character analysis. This involves writing about: Why you picked this particular character A brief outline of their role in the film Their character Their background Their interests Their motives Their personality How they are treated by others How they change and develop throughout the course of the film

Extension: Write a summary of an additional scene featuring your chosen character. Task 4: Research a charity and write an account of the work they do and why you are interested in their cause. (You should write 400 words minimum.)

Task 5: Research a famous person you admire and write your version of their biography. You must ensure you use your own words throughout. Present your findings either as a three minute talk or write a 400 word essay.

Task 6 Choose a passage from one of the pieces of literature you have studied in English during your time at Knox. Write a close analysis of the passage explaining: what its about; what style and techniques are used by the author; the effect it had on you when you first read it; how your understanding of the passage has changed now that youve studied it carefully etc. You should write a minimum of 400 words.

Task 7: Choose one of the following statements and say whether you agree or disagree. You should write a 400 word essay explaining the reasons behind your point of view. You may need to research the topic in order to find out some facts. Whenever possible you should try to help homeless people by giving them whatever change you can afford. Being a celebrity has nothing to do with being gifted or talented. Animal testing is wrong and should be completely banned.

Task 8: Invent a country. Describe the setting, history, traditions, food, language and culture. Include illustrations and a map of the country. Extension: Write A Day in the Life of one of the countrymen.

Task 9: Choose an interesting object from around your house which has a story attached to it. Either prepare a three minute talk explaining all about the object and why you find it interesting or write a 400 word essay on it.

Task 10: Write a sports column for a newspaper reviewing a match/ game you enjoyed. The column should be at least 400 words long. Task 11: Group Homework this homework can be done on your own or with a group of two or three friends. Your task is to write a short play script using one of the following titles: The Final Curtain, The Ghost of Knox Academy or The Great Escape. Extension: Perform a scene from your sketch to the class.

Task12: Write a 400 word imaginative account of your ideal holiday or Fantasy Road Trip. Where would you go? Who would you go with? What would you do? How would you travel etc? Focus on varying your vocabulary and expression.

Task 13: Write in any way you choose in response to the following image. If writing prose, your piece should be at least 400 words.
