Faith City Council discusses ice house, street project and more

The Faith City Council agenda for their September 4th meeting included the street project at the fairgrounds, the ice house and insurance quotes. Council opened bids for the fairgrounds street project at 7:15 and rejected the only bid received. Anderson Construction of Pierre submitted a bid in the amount of $30,872.75, which was much higher than expected. Members discussed other ways this problem could be corrected, but nothing definite was decided. Karen Butler presented members with a quote for the Citys property/liabilty insurance. They have two policies, one for the city and a fire package for the fire department/ambulance. Karen went over the information with members and they will review it and make their decision at their next meeting. At 7:30 bids were opened for the various construction projects. One bid was received, Hausauer of Lemmon for $1409 for gutter and downspouts on the library. Council approved the bid. One bid was also received for power washing and staining the deck at the museum, but the individual had a problem with the timeline; he didnt have time to get it done before their deadline. Riley thought it might be better to wait until spring to do the work, but the consensus of the Council was that it was better to get it protected before the cold weather. Council approved changing the deadline to October 30th. Debbie explained that the Golden West agreement for 2014 needed to be approved. She said there were a few changes in it but nothing critical. Golden West handles all the switching for the City. Debbie explained the airport pavement and striping project to Council. If they get it done this year it will only cost them 2% of the project cost, or around $9,000. Debbie said they could use their fuel tax which they havent used in a long time. Council approved the project. Justin Inghram came before Council to asked about getting electricity to his building. Mayor Haines said he and Donn had visited about it earlier in the day and Donn will get to it this week yet or next week. Haines explained to Inghram that it would cost him about $5,000, possibly less, for moving the power pole, trenching, etc. Reed Henschel, on behalf of the Museum Board, explained work that needs to be done on the ice house. There are several things that need attention, but the first item is to get the electricity connected. He said that Sandgren from Bison was planning to do it yet this week. They would also like to have a new front door and a deck. It will also require a vintage lock. The windows and doors need winterizing, and the siding is really dry and cracking. He thought maybe they could just caulk those areas. Inghram wondered if the really bad areas should be resided. Debbie said the City received $9,000 from the Deadwood Historical grant and they have used about $1400 of it. She said the grant said items included in the coverage was to repaint the siding. They will have to make specs for these projects and Debbie will call for quotes for the next meeting. Debbie visited with Angel Kennedy about the craft fair and Angel would do the work for $250. The information center staff did it before but with it closed now there is no one to take care of it. She said there has been some interest from vendors. Council approved paying Angel to handle the fair. Debbie said they didnt need a resolution for accepting the airport grant, just a motion. The grant is for $46,130 to update equipment. Council accepted the grant. The City is in need of a new meter reader. The one they have cannot be repaired, and they need to have a handheld unit, and software. The unit will run around $4580 and the software $1900. Council approved the purchase of these items. Debra Wicks, on behalf of daughter Jackie, read a statement concerning the charges for utilities. They felt the City was not being fair in making her responsible for the utilities instead of her renter. Jackie thought when she left the utilities would be disonnected and it would be put in the renters name. It was explained that it has been the City policy for years to bill the owner. Members said she could, and should, charge any renter a deposit, in case of any forfeiture of payment to the City. Jim Holloway said any of their renters pay utilities but they are still responsible. She can get her refund back, but her name, along with the renters, will stay on the statement as the owner/responsible person. The budget was the next topic of discussion. Mayor Haines asked Holloway at this time if he knew of any upcoming increase in the cost of water from Tri County Water. Jim said at this time he didnt know of any, but it all depends on what funding comes down from D.C. He said they have been pumping water at max for the past 30 days. Tri County has Eagle Butte and Dupree on water restriction, but havent passed it on to Faith. It was noted that the Corps of Engineers was wanting to charge for water from Lake Oahe, but he said that wouldnt affect us. Debbie wanted some clarification on some budget items. The library is asking for an additional $5,000 to update 6 older computers, and the CAT would like $2500 to help with maintenance and repairs to doors and windows. The City gives the library $20,000 which is used for salaries, etc. The City is trying to make cuts, and didnt feel these two requests were necessary. Spencer said the fire department met the other night and they will be asking for funds. Haines said they had found another fire truck. Brookings, S.D.-The drought has left many South Dakota cattle producers with feed shortages as winter approaches. To help the state's cow/calf producers prepare for winter, SDSU Extension hosts Before the Snow Flies Series: How Cow/Calf Producers can Prepare for Winter in several communities across South Dakota beginning Sept. 10 including Faith on September 17 at 4:30 at the Faith Livestock Comm. "This past summer's drought has put ranchers into a difficult situation across the state. To stay in business, producers will need will need to figure out how much money they can spend this winter without compromising herd health and reproduction," said Robin Salverson, SDSU Extension Cow/Calf Field Specialist. "The upcoming Informational meetings are designed to address the nutritional, reproductive, and economic issues facing cow/calf producers this winter following a summer drought. Topics covered in this series include; Managing and Evaluating Feed stuffs, Availability of Alternative Feedstuffs, Adjusting Feed for Reproductive Success for your Cow Herd and Economics During and After a Drought. The series will be led by SDSU Extension field specialists with expertise in cow/calf management and business management. The meeting will include a Q&A panel to address specific questions cattle producers may have. Ruby Thomas
grandmother to several extended families and having friends and family in her home, where she loved to cook and create gifts for all. She was a proud volunteer at the Black Hills Passion Play, where all of her family and friends participated with her. She enjoyed working in the Republican Party, giving many luncheons and supporting candidates with fundraisers.It was her pleasure to entertain nursing home residents with birthday parties. She gave unselfishly to those all around her Survivors include her son, Les and Karen (Gregson) Turgeon of Beulah, WY; two sisters, Garnette Ainsworth and Sonya Albers and brother, Roger Guy Bell all of Spearfish; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husbands Joe Turgeon and Willis Thomas; her parents Bertha and Guy Bell; brothers, Tom, Doug and LeRoy (Bud) Bell; son, JoJo; three daughters, Harlene, Berta and Kaye; two stepsons, Terry and Jewell Thomas; a grandson, Randy Lane Mraz; a great-granddaughter, Amy Jo Mraz; and a great-great grandson, Devon Nicolas. Memorial services were held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, September 8, 2012 at the United Church of Christ (Congregational), her church home for 86 years, in Spearfish. Alice Thomas
in 1955.A couple years later they moved to Underwood, ND. In 1962 they moved to Faith, SD where they bought a share of Faith Lumber and Duane took over management.Alice took over the bookkeeping records at Faith Lumber in 1963 until 1988. During her years at Faith Lumber she became a very active member of the American Legion Auxiliary where she dedicated many hours to planning and organizing functions most notably Memorial Day Services. She was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church and very active in all the ladies activities.She became a very proactive member of the Order of the Eastern Star.Duane and Alice drove many miles attending events related to the Masons and the Order of the Eastern Star. Alice and Duane loved to travel in their motor home, visiting all 50 states along the way. Alice loved listening and dancing to music, playing cards, teddy bears, and spending time with family. It wasn't Christmas unless the kids, grandkids, and great grandkids where there to share.Her passion for roses, butterflies, and cooking will be remembered by all.Alice and Duane were avid sports fans. They loved to watch kids play football, basketball, softball, track, or cross country and drove many miles attending these activities. Alice passed away on Saturday, September 1, 2012 at the Five Counties Nursing Home in Lemmon, SD with her loving partner of 66 years by her side. She is survived by her husband and loving lifelong partner, Duane Thomas, Lemmon, SD; one son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Mona Thomas, Faith, SD; one son-in-law, Fred Reede, Meadow, SD; four grandchildren, Tanya and Bill Bushong, Faith, SD, Boyce and Melissa Reede and Scott and Marla Reede, both of Lemmon, SD and Jamie and Sabrina Thomas, San Diego, CA; nine great-grandchildren, Gereth, Treyton, and Gabriel Bushong, Brianna and Jacob Thomas, Dillon and Kole Reede, baby Reede, and Micah Reede; three sistersin-law, Evelyn Anderson, Dupree, SD, Bernice Capp and Vivian Thomas, both of Spearfish, SD; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Alice was preceded in death by her parents, Lou and Lurinda Perkins; one daughter, Renee Reede; one son, Kurt Thomas; two brothers in infancy; three sistersin-law, Jean Capp, Ruby Thomas and Arlene Thomas; and seven brothers-in-law, Calvin Anderson, Donno and Chuck Capp and Willis, Denny, Stanley and Clinton Thomas. Visitation was Thursday, September 6, 2012 at the EvansonJensen Funeral Home in Lemmon followed by an Order of the Eastern Star service and a family service. Ruby Thomas, 96, of Spearfish, SD passed away on Thursday, August 30, 2012 at Crook County Long Term Care in Sundance, WY. Ruby Turgeon Thomas was born on June 3, 1916 in Elgin, ND to Guy and Bertha (Stoller) Bell. The family moved to Spearfish, in 1931 where her father was in business and was instrumental in bringing the Passion Play to the Black Hills Ruby married Joe Turgeon of St. Onge and to that union five children were born; Emery Joel (JoJo), Harlene Gayle, Berta Faye, Kaye Ellen and Leslie Guy. The family lived in St. Onge where the children all started school. The family moved to Dupree where they operated a caf. In 1952 they moved to Spearfish where she worked as a clerk for Bell Market. Ruby married Willis Thomas of Dupree in 1962 where they ranched for 25 years and she worked in Hickenbothams Clothing Store. After his death, she moved back to Spearfish in 1986. Funeral services for Alice Thomas, age 87, of Faith, SD were held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 7, 2012 at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Faith.Pastor Wayne Olson officiated with burial at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD. Alice Irene Perkins was born on March 23, 1925 in Abbotsford, WI to Lou Albert and Anna (Lurinda) Marie Lemke Perkins. She was raised near Lantry South Dakota. She graduated from Dupree High School in 1943 and went onto Black Hills Teacher's College where she graduated with an Associates Degree in Education in 1946. She married the love of her life Duane Arlee Thomas on December 8, 1945.Three children were born to this union; Renee on October 28, 1949, Randy on December 9, 1952, and Kurt on November 15, 1954. Alice taught elementary school at Dupree and Soliday until they moved to Mobridge, SD

Andrew M. Fischbach
enrolled in the Army National Guard. In early 1941, as he began his final classes before graduation, the National Guard was called to active duty and he was sent to Camp Claiborne, La., for training. At a troop dance in the spring of 1941 he met Yvette Labarre of New Orleans. Their courtship, mostly through daily letters, led to marriage at Chanute Field, Ill., on Aug. 29, 1942. The marriage lasted 61 years until her death in 2004. Immediately after their wedding, they were stationed in Great Falls, Mont., where sons Michael and David were born, then in Spokane, Wash., before he was shipped overseas to combat duty in Okinawa, Japan, in early 1945. He returned stateside that Christmas, after World War II had ended. His father had had a heart attack that winter. An only son, Andy came home to Faith to help his father "temporarily" on the cattle ranch before resuming his engineering studies. But his and Yvette's family grew, and he never left ranching. A greatly expanded Fischbach Ranch, in which sons David and Noel became co-owners, marked its 100th year recently. Andy used his engineering training on ranch and civic building projects, including his two homes, the Faith Memorial Hospital, the Faith rodeo grandstand, a new gymnasium for Faith High School in the 1960s and an upgraded municipal airport in the 1980s. He became a co-owner of Faith Lumber Co. in 1961, retaining part ownership until his death. He was elected to the Faith City Council and the Faith School Board and was active in the Faith Hospital Association, the Faith Chamber of Commerce, and being dedicated to education, the Associated School Boards of South Dakota, the South Dakota Community Foundation, the Faith Stock Show Association, the Knights of Columbus and the St. Joseph Catholic Church parish council. For decades he mimeographed the weekly church bulletin. In 1998 he received an honorary bachelor's degree from South Dakota State University, where his family was named family of the year a few years before. He moved to the Victorian Manor in Rapid City in early 2009 and had been in declining health for some time. He is survived by sons Michael (Ann) of Overland Park, Kan.; David (Eldora) and Noel (Julie) of Faith; Mark (Rose) of Seattle, Wash.; Dan (Marge) of Columbia, Mo.; Bob of Omaha, Neb.; and Andre (Mary Ann) of Clark's Summit, Pa.; daughters, Yvette Kottman of Lewes, Del.; Kathy Schuchhardt (David) of Faith; and Julie (Leo) Waner of Waunakee, Wis.; a sister, Maria (Walter) Schlomer of Glenham, S.D.; 25 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Yvette. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Faith Senior Citizens Center, the Faith Schools Fund or St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Mass of Christian Burial for Andrew M. Fischbach, age 92, of Faith, SD was held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 8, 2012. Fr. Jim Hoerter and Fr. Mike Mulloy officiated with burial in the St. Josephs Cemetery west of Faith, SD. Visitation was held Friday, September 7, 2012 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Faith Area Memorial Chapel in Faith. A Rosary and Christian Wake Service followed at 7:00 p.m. at St. Josephs Catholic Church in Faith. He was a rancher and an engineer, a World War II veteran and an active contributor to the civic affairs of his hometown and state. Most of all, he was father to a large and boisterous brood of 10 children, who gave him 25 grandchildren and, so far, 33 greatgrandchildren. Andy Fischbach, a plain-spoken cowboy from Faith, S.D., died Tuesday morning at a nursing home in New Underwood, S.D., of complications from aspiration pneumonia. He was 92. The past three years he had been in assisted living in Rapid City, S.D. Andrew Michael Fischbach was born June 15, 1920, to Michael and Theresa Fischbach in their ranch home on Red Scaffold Creek, five miles southwest of Faith. Mike was a 1910 homesteader. Andrew and his sister, Maria, attended Edson country school and both graduated from Faith High School in 1937. He attended the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City for one year before enrolling in civil engineering at South Dakota State College in 1938. There he

South Dakota Farmers Union members are in Washington, D.C., this week to talk to members of Congress. The biggest issue on the agenda, push for the passage of a new five-year farm bill. On day one of the National Farmers Union's annual Fly-In, members heard from Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack who spoke to the group at the headquarters of the United State Department of Agriculture. Vilsack called on Congress to pass a farm bill, and pass it now. There is no more important piece of legislation that any member of Congress can work on for rural America, for farmers and producers and ranchers than passage of the farm bill this month, Vilsack told the group. The current farm bill, passed in 2008, expires on Sept. 30 of this year. If there is no farm bill passed, farm programs will revert back to 1933 levels. Vilsack pointed to history after talking about how some critics say that it will be difficult to pass a farm bill in the eight working days Congress will be in session this September. He said in 1862, President Lincoln and Congress passed some of the most influential laws affecting agriculture in history. USDA established, the Morrell Act and land grant universities , the intercontinental railroad system, the Homestead Act, all one Congress, all one year, in the middle of the Civil War. Please, in 2012, do not tell me that it should be as difficult in eight working days, that it should be as difficult to pass a farm bill, thats just baloney. Vilsack told Farmers Union members that it's up to them to

convince lawmakers that they need to pass a farm bill. You have a voice. You have an opportunity and I think you have a responsibility. Stand up for rural America. You dont buy this notion that theres not enough time. You can always find time for your priorities. Thats the message. If it doesnt get done its not a priority, Vilsack said, and called on Congress to bring the farm bill to the House floor for a vote. "Put a bill up, put it up! Youre telling me you cant get 218 votes? Put it up. Because if it doesnt get put up the risk you run is not having certainty in the countryside as you all make decisions for next year. We dont know for certain that well have any kind of disaster assistance for the poor livestock guys and the dairy guys and the crop producers who are struggling. And we wont be able to continue this extraordinary momentum thats built in rural America that for the first time in a long, long time weve got a shot at decent incomes, and more opportunities, and expanded opportunities for young people to get involved in farming, expand rural populations to create jobs in rural communities and bring rural America back. During the fly-in, Farmers Union members will also join hundreds of other farmers, legislative representatives and agricultural leaders for the Farm Bill Now! rally, to be held on U.S. Capitol grounds Sept. 12. The event is aimed to send a strong message to Congress to pass a new, comprehensive, five-year farm bill before current farm programs expire at the end of September. Fly-in participants will hear from other USDA officials and White House officials, and visit every member of Congress during the three-day event.

Tyler and Rachel Caspers of New Underwood welcomed a new baby boy at the Rapid City Regional Hospital on Augast 28th. Kye Jordan Caspers arrived weighing 6# 5 oz. and measuring 20 1/2 long. He joins the family along with his 8 year old sister Taryn. Thrilled grandparents are Dan and Jayne Jordan of Faith and Nick and Lila Caspers of Elm Springs.

Temperatures were much cooler last week, and the nights got down right chilly, dipping into the low 40s. The first part of this week were warmer again, but cooled down the middle of the week. The fire whistle blew last Wednesday for a fire south of the old Udager place, west of town. There was also a fire at Red Scaffold that day. The week before there were several fires north of town. Please be very careful outdoors, it is extremely dry. Diane Humble spent Labor Day weekend in Terry and Miles City, Montana visiting Bruce and Blaine at their ranch jobs. Our condolences to the families of Alice Thomas and Andy Fischbach. Alices funeral was held last Friday and Andys was on Saturday. One always enjoyed visiting with Alice anytime you saw her. Andy was another one of those guys you could always visit with. Both always enjoyed life to the fullest. They were both very involved in so many of the community events over the years, whether is was serving on organizations/boards/committees, fundraising, or sporting events. They will be missed. There were many former Faith residents here for the services. Its nice to see old faces. Ten day old Kye Caspers got acquainted at Grandpa Dan Jordans ranch over the weekend. The men gave the calves fall shots while the womenfolk played with the baby, cooked and canned salsa. Barb and Kim Bell and Kevin of Groton surprised Raymond and Diane Isaacs and Danny Miles with a visit on Saturday. They went on to Spearfish to visit mom Esther Miles. Danny joined them there on Sunday. Betty Walker, Doris Frankfurth and Garnet Gaaskjolen had a little welcome back party for Jane Hauser on Thursday. Marlene Griffith stopped by later to say, Hi! to Jane. Jane recently moved back to Faith from Sturgis. Iris Day visited briefly with Garnet Gaaskjolen last Tuesday evening and they went out to supper together at a local cafe. Our daughter Melissa spent several days with us last week. She visited with friends Marlayna McGinnis and Takayla Lightfield while she was home, and also visited Ms Mollman at school one day. Melissa left for home in North Dakota after Andy

Fischbachs funeral service on Saturday. The girls volleyball teams have been doing very well. They have games at Wall this Thursday night and will be hosting Kadoka this Saturday at 1:00. The cross country team will be traveling to Gettysburg this Saaturday morning for a meet. This is Homecoming Week and students are busy with many activities this week. The Longhorn Challenge takes place Friday morning at 10:15, the pep rally is at 12:45, the parade is at 2:00 and the tailgate supper is before the football game, which is at 6:00, instead of the usual 7:00. Good luck Longhorns! The alumni banquet and dance is Saturday night. One can always take in the volleyball games in the afternoon. Visiting alumni can also tour the new school on Friday while students are busy with Homecoming activities. They ask that you check in at the office. They are also having tours on Saturday from 3:30 - 5:30. Its a beautiful facility, youll want to see it! The JV volleyball girls will be playing Newell here next Monday, 17th. The C,B & A teams will be traveling to Philip on Tuesday. Welcome home alumni. Hope you have a great weekend!

Faye Fees called on neighbor Anissa and got her hair cut and visited a bit. Tuesday and Thursday, Faye made her trips into Faith for her knee therapy and did some shopping and visited a bit with friend Gladys Peterson. That afternoon, Jade Hlavka and Darwin Hellekson came to the ranch to pick up a couple of old outfits of Walter's that were at Faye's. Walter Fees helped David Fees work calves on Tuesday. John and Carmen Heidler made a business trip into the Hills towns on Tuesday. John went to Faith on Saturday forenoon for the funeral services for Andy Fischbach and Carmen went to Isabel to attend a bridal shower for Merretta Kahl. Wednesday, both Marlin and Ethel Ingalls and the Fogelmans kept appointments in Rapid City. Wednesday forenoon, a fire was started by a 4-wheeler on pasture land east of Lemmon Butte. Guess it ended up burning about 520 acres before our wonderful fire responders were able to get it stopped. Hope Vig went to Rapid City on Thursday to pick up her sister Rose Tysdal from Florida at the airport. They stopped by to visit sister Faith and Ronald Miller on their way home. Walter and Diane Fees spent Thursday afternoon touring the Southern Hills on their motorcycle, then on Saturday they rode in the Midland and Philip area. Marlin and Ethel Ingalls hosted Bible Study on Thursday evening at their home for Barry and Cheryl Vig and Glenn and Margaret Fogelman. Rod and Tracy Ingalls kept appointments and did shopping in Rapid City on Friday. Howard and I and Justin Ingalls joined friends and relatives at the home of granddaughter Laura and Ben Meyers in Union Center for an evening of food and fellowship.It was to help James Ingalls celebrate his 18th birthday and to wish him well in his new employment near Mullen, NE. Robert and JoDee and some of the kids left Sunday morning to help James move some furnishings to his new location.We wish him well in his new job. Saturday afternoon, Dwayne and Zona Vig went up to the Prairie City area to attend a wedding for Dwayne's great nephew. It was for a grandson of Faith and Ronald Millers and Cassie Dye. Hope Vig and Rose Tysdal also attended. Congratulation, kids. Lisle and Mike Reeve and Glenn and Dan Fogelman were some of the neighbors that attended the retirement auction held for Jesse and Carolyn Moreland on Saturday. Walter and Diane Fees went to Rapid City on Sunday shopping for repair supplies for their house and the Juliet 1.Jason Fees came down to visit only to find them gone.He did visit brother Jesse Fees near Marcus, though. Chip Heidler and family came to the John Heidler ranch on Sunday to do some preg checking on heifers. Dwayne Vig did the preaching services at the Prairie City church on Sunday while Zona, Hope and Rose attended church in Faith.That evening, Zona delivered granddaughter Autumn Keffeler's cat to Sturgis as Aurora and Autumn had driven over from Gillette to get the pickup. Zona then went on to Rapid City to spend a few days with Chandelle Brink and family.Dakota Dunn had also driven up from Colorado for a visit.

Regretfully, my last day working in the Faith Clinic was August 31, 2012. I have taken a new position at the Rapid City Regional Hospital. This decision was fully due to the four hour commute. Frequently, I have told people that if this job, patients and staff were in Rapid City I would be in hog heaven. I wish to thank you for trusting me in your care and the care of your loved ones. Truly I have enjoyed my time in Faith.

Harold went over and visited. He tells me there was a Model T car that went for $8,000.00. Wouldnt that price amaze people from bygone days! Congratulations to Anna (Waterland) Dykstra and husband, Clay on the birth of their first child. The little guy was born last week and didn't have a name the last I knew. This is Allen Waterland and Ginny Waterland's third grandson. Lacey says maybe Allen can have his own football team! Congratulations to all! There was a team roping held at the HM arena Sunday. There was a good bunch of ropers but I don't have any results for that either. Lacey and Quirt Wondercheck, Harold and I were Sunday dinner guests of Bub, D'Anne and Troy Thompson. D'Anne is teaching second grade in Eagle Butte this year and Troy is attending high school in Faith. I think Bub gets a little lonesome this year! Another week of dry weather, prairie fires and looking to the sky for clouds without lightning. Life goes on with weaning, selling calves, preg checking and culling stock and bringing in any hay you have. Everyone is debating the issue of hard winter versus open winter. My dad said, The old timers told him if the draws were green and grazed off it would be a tough winter, if they cured up like the rest of the grass and werent grazed hard it would be open. That goes back to what many of us think, no hay equals a tough winter. Guess well see, wont we. This week Faith was the site of funeral services of two people whom I always thought of as pillars of the community. Andrew Fishbach and Alice Thomas were the kind of people who made Faith a good town and a place we are proud to call our hometown. Each of these people gave of their time and money to see that this

town became a better place. They knew who was new to town, who had been here for years and who needed some help. They followed the school sports teams and supported the activities taking place in and out of town. These people were wonderful role models for all who knew them. Thank you to their families for allowing us to share these good folks. On the XM radio show from Willies I heard a nice quote tonight. God has your soul, I have your memories. How very true and comforting. There will be a wedding shower for Max Thompson and Katrina Fulton September 16 at the Marcus Church basement. It will begin at 2:00 P.M. Everyone is invited. There was a good attendance at the Saturday night wedding shower for Riley Timmons and Marissa Mix. The weather was great and folks were ready to visit and enjoy a good potluck meal. The little kids had a great time running around outside the White Owl Hall until two of them got in the cactus. Congratulations to Riley and Marissa. Saturday was the auction for Jesse and Carolyn Moreland.

Central Meade County enjoyed several days of much cooler weather last week, which was a nice break. However, fire danger is extremely high and it isn't uncommon to spot a cloud of smoke in any given direction. We are in hopes that this week will bring some moisture, but are more cautious than ever with anything that may cause a spark. The Faith Longhorns volleyball and football teams are doing well thus far. The girls volleyball team placed 3rd this past weekend in Mobridge which included 10 schools. Last year they placed 5th in this tournament. This team is one to keep on the radar as they qualified for State last year. Last year's JV team was undefeated. The boys football team had a big win when they played Rapid City Christian last week at their beautiful new facility. Faith's homecoming festivities are this week, which include coronation onTuesday. Caden Smiley and Paige Brink are two from Central Meade County who are a part of homecoming royalty this year. Caden is the son of Rick and Joy Smiley and Paige is the daughter of Casey and Francie Brink. The Faith Longhorns will play Edgemont on Friday night. Several families including the Tyson Hewitts, Scott Cammacks, Larry Rhodens, as well as Leona Fields, Kathryn Spring, Sharon Keffeler, Lorie Hausmann, Ardis and Kristen Smiley, Jack and Edna Smith, Chuck and Ninu Spring, Floyd and Donna Cammack, Gary and Amy Cammack, and others took advantage of the Bull Creek Cafe after church services on Sunday. The Harvest Fest and Ag banquet in Sturgis will be held on Saturday, Sept.15. West River Electrics Annual Meeting will be held at the Wall Community Center on October 6 in Wall. For more details one may call 605-279-2135. Family and friends of Calvin Cammack and Kristi Mortenson attended their wedding on Saturday evening. The setting for the wedding was located in the yard of the Mortenson cabin on Maitland Road. The outside chapel was seen after one dropped down over the small, green hillside near a clear, fish inhabited creek. When background music was still, one could hear the water gently trickling into the stream. Calvin had recently installed a temporary watering system 3 weeks before, so the surroundings were a lovely, lush green grass and trees. The reception and dance were held at the Sturgis Bus Company garage. Melanie Cammack provided a slide show at the reception. Alisha Barry was the photographer with Melissa Wilcox assisting, and Lane Cammack video taped the occasion. Calvin is the son of Mike and Yvonne Cammack. For those who love the ways of the old west and enjoy the many interesting stories, you should plan to attend the "Badger Clark Home Town Cowboy Stories and Songs' On Friday, September 21. It will be at Wooly''s on the bypass in Hot Springs. For one last summer festivity to enjoy, one could make this their weekend plan. Robert Dennis will be taking part in this event, so one may visit with him for more information or call the Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce.

By Coach Alison Grueb September 6th the Lady Longhorns hosted the Lemmon Cowgirls and chalked up wins for both the JV and Varsity teams. The JV team won their match in two sets with scores of 25-9 and 25-17. Leading scorer for the Longhorn JV team was Brooke Enright with 19 points (6 aces). The varsity picked up their second win on the season by winning their match in 4 close sets with scores of 25-23, 25-22, 22-25, and 25-22. Stats leaders for the match include: Paige Brink and Tearnee Nelson with 9 digs each, Shanna Selby with 11 assists, Marissa Collins with 9 solo blocks and 2 block assists, Paige Brink with 24 serve receives, Tearnee Nelson with 9 kills, and Shanna Selby with 16 points (5 aces).

Lady Longhorns start season with wins

The 2012 volleyball season kicked off August 30th with the McIntosh Tigers traveling to Faith to take on the Longhorns. The JV started the night off with a win beating McIntoshs JH team in two sets with scores of 255 and 25-3. Kassidy Inghram scored 16 points (12 aces) for the Longhorns while Teagan Engel scored 10 points (9 aces), Michaelah Martin contributed 14 points (11 aces) and Tori Simonson scored 4 points (1 ace). The varsity followed the lead of the JV and went on to win their match in 3 sets with scores of 2521, 25-19 and 25-20. Defensive stat leaders include Marissa Collins with 4 solo blocks and Tearnee Nelson with 5 digs. Offensive stat leaders include Shanna Selby with 11 assists, Paige Brink with 16 serve receives, Tearnee Nelson with 8 kills, and each contributing 10 points apiece were Shanna Selby (2 aces), Tearnee Nelson and Marissa Collins. The Longhorns return to the court after making a trip to the class B state tournament last year. The team only has two returning starters in Tearnee Nelson and Marissa Collins after losing 8 seniors last season. The Lady Longhorns next host Lemmon in Faith September 6th. Enright wins first

By Coach Marlene Gustafson The Wall Invitational Cross Country Meet was held on September 8, 2012. Athletes from Faith, Wall, Philip, Kadoka, Bison, Stanley County, Lyman County, Dupree, and White River participated in the meet. Brandi Enright won the girls junior varsity 3,000 meter race with the time of 9:19. Brandi had a great start and led the entire race. Shayna Engel placed 16th in the varsity girls 4,000 meter race with the time of 21:31. The varsity boys were fourth overall as a team with Drew Vance leading the Faith Longhorns. Drew place 12th with the time of 20:42, Jarius Halligan was 15th with 22:08 and David Ruth placed 16th with the time of 23:49. In the junior varsity boys 4,000 meter race James Ulrich placed 16th with 21:22. Brock Vance was 17th with 22:08, Jacob Ulrich placed 18th with 22:15, Mark Smith was 20th with 24:09, Bailey Deuter placed 21st with 25:35 and Joseph Ulrich was 22nd with the time of 26:52. Times are improving each week and the junior varsity boys races are increasing in distance at every meet we attend. The Faith Cross Country Team will compete in Gettysburg on September 15.

Last Saturday, Sept. 8th, the Longhorn varsity team traveled to Mobridge for a 10-team tournament. The Longhorns picked up their first of 3 wins on the day by beating Timber Lake in 2 sets with scores of 25-22 and 25-7. The Longhorns finished out pool play by defeating the EurekaBowdle Patriots in three sets with scores of 24-26, 25-23 and 25-10. The Longhorns then went into tournament play and took on the Mobridge-Pollock Tigers only to suffer their first loss of the season losing to the Tigers in 2 sets with scores of 14-25 and 18-25. The Longhorns pulled together for their final win of the day and beat Leola-Frederick in the 3rd/4th place match with scores of 25-12, 22-25 and 25-17. Stats leaders for all the tournament matches combined include: Tearnee Nelson with 32 kills, 29 serve receives and 19 digs; Marissa Collins with 9 solo blocks; and Shanna Selby with 45 assists and 37 points (11 aces). Marissa Collins received AllTournament honors. All player stats can be found at MaxPreps.com. T h e Lady Longhorns now have a 5-1 record and travel to Wall on the 13th and host Kadoka on Saturday, the 15th.

The Common Council for the City of Faith, South Dakota met in regular session on August 21, 2012 at 6:30 P.M. in the Community Room of the Community Center. All yes votes. Motion carried. Ordinance No. 300 (2013 Appropriation Ordinance) Hellekson made motion, seconded by Spencer to approve the first reading of Ordinance No. 300. All yes votes. Motion carried. Committee Meetings: Department heads met with the Council. Surplus Property: Angela sent a list to the office of items to be put on the surplus list. Riley stated that she believed that the VCR was a non working one. Riley made a motion, seconded by Lightfield to approve to surplus a scanner and a VCR. Motion carried. Gun Show Insurance: The Gun Show insurance for the Faith Special Entertainment Committee ended up having to be a specialty insurance which the cost was $666.25. The committee stated they would pay for the insurance, but that would just mean less money for the carnival fund next year. Inghram made a motion, seconded by Riley to allow the City to pay for it. All yes votes. Motion carried. Bartender: Juanita Selby will not be able to work every Monday and Tuesday as of August 21, 2012 as she has taken another job. She would be available some weeks and special occasion. City has advertised. Approve Security Guards: Inghram made a motion, seconded by Spencer to approve the following security guards as of August 6, 2012: Mark Steffen certified Arron Circle Bear certified Wyatt Clark non certified Motion carried. Approve Ambulance Para/CNP: Spencer made a motion, seconded by Lightfield to approve Darci Harper as Para/CNP on the ambulance when needed. Motion carried. Spraying Noxious Weeds: There is a lot of Creeping Jenny and other various weeds around town. A notice needs to be put in the paper on property owners spraying their weeds. Riley made a motion, seconded by Nolan to table the spraying of weeds. Three yes votes. Nolan, Inghram and Spencer no votes. Mayor Haines broke the tie with a no vote. Motion failed. Riley made a motion, seconded by Nolan to have the guys spray the weeds needed. All no votes. Motion failed. Council agreed to take quotes on spraying weeds at the lagoon, in curbline and streets. Airport Transfer of funds: Lightfield made a motion, seconded by Nolan to transfer 2009 Airport Funds that the City will not be using to Pine Ridge Airport. All yes votes. Motion carried. Advertise for Bids Drainage Improvements: After some discussion on the placement of the drainage improvement next to the livestock barn at the fairgrounds, Spencer made a motion, seconded by Lightfield to approve to advertise for bids to be open September 4th. All yes votes, motion carried. Quotes on Chips: Donn Dupper stated in Committee meeting that he had talked with Joel Larson with the State Shop and he said that their crew couldnt help until August 27th. Dupper talked with Dave Lutz about how many chips came off of the streets last year and Lutz suggested that it be early summer so the chips can stay on longer before sweeping. Since they cant get to us until August 27th, Dupper would like to just bid out the hauling of the chips this year and do it early summer next year. Three quotes were received for the purchase of the chips: Pete Lein & Sons, Rapid City, SD - $13.25; Fisher Sand and Gravel, Beulah, WY - $12.50; and Hills Materials, Spearfish, SD $16.53. Inghram made a motion, seconded by Hellekson to accept the quote from Fisher Sand and Gravel, Beulah, Wyoming and have Donn Dupper inspect the first load to make sure it is the chips he wants. All yes votes. Motion carried. Advertise to bid out hauling chips: Lightfield made a motion, seconded by Hellekson to approve to advertise to bid out hauling 1500 ton of aggregate chips from Beulah, Wyoming to Faith stock pile. All yes votes. Motion carried. Payment for Committee Meetings Clarified: Peggy Riley inquired why she was not getting paid for Library meetings and Debbie Brown stated that we have never paid anyone to be the Library Liaison. Riley made a motion, seconded by Hellekson to not pay for any committee meetings. Five yes votes. Nolan no. Motion carried. Trucking Quotes to Haul: Mayor Haines talked to Newton Brown to haul the mowers from Aberdeen and the transformers from Beresford and he would do it for $2.00 a mile. Riley made a motion, seconded by Nolan to approve Newton Brown to haul the mowers and transformers for $2.00 a mile. All yes votes. Motion carried. Discussion on Hiring at Faith Information Center: Council agreed to have Corinna Thompson do a few Fridays and weekends to end the fall and not hire anyone until spring. Use of Gym and Council Room: Debbie Brown just reminded the Council that Wanda Ruth asked for the

Gym for the Donkey Basketball on October 20th and that the Junior Class will need the Council Room for games as it helps with the flow of people. Discussion on Lake Lease: It was asked if the City would change the lease to a December lease instead of an October lease. After some discussion, Lightfield made a motion, seconded by Spencer to leave the lease date as is. Five no votes. Spencer yes. Motion failed. Spencer made a motion, seconded by Lightfield to change the lease date for the Durkee Lake land to January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2015. All yes votes. Motion carried. Arrears List: Council reviewed the arrears list. Executive Session: Lightfield made a motion, seconded by Nolan to retire into executive session at 8:04 PM to discuss personnel. Motion carried.
