There were a lot of things

to be excited about if you
were a Petoskey Northman
football fan on Friday. They
came in as league champs
and hadnt lost an in-confer-
ence game since October of
2010 and were also bolstering
an undefeated 2-0 record.
Coming to town was the
Cadillac Vikings who were
also 2-0 and finished in the
middle of the pack in the Big
North conference last year.
The night would end in dis-
appointment though as the
Vikings dominated from the
start to finish and walked
away with a convincing 44-14
win.
There were two constants
throughout the entire game,
the rain, and Vikings junior
QB Jalen Brooks. The ever
present rain never let up and
came down in sheets the
entire night forcing both
teams into a more run domi-
nant offense, this seemed to
work perfect for Cadillac as
they accumulated 346 yards
on the ground to Petoskeys
89. The first quarter was
played tight as both teams
tried to find a plan that
would work best in the wet
conditions. The scoring start-
ed when Cadillac kicker Nick
Paquet boomed a 43 yard
field goal in the inclement
weather to put the Vikings up
3-0. About 3 and a half min-
utes later Brooks crossed the
goal line to go up 10-0.
Northmen QB Quinn Ameel
responded by throwing a
bomb to Pat Antonides who
showed superior hands
pulling in the pass and scam-
pering for the 58 yard touch-
down sending the home
crowd into an uproar.
When the 2nd quarter
started 10-7 the home crowd
was backing their team in full
force but this seemed to only
motivate the opposing quar-
terback. The Vikings talented
QB Jalen Brooks started put-
ting on a show, first scoring
from 15 yards out, then again
from 7, 35 seconds after that
he scored again from 11
yards out. With the score 30-
7 Petoskey struck another
huge play as Ameel hit up
with Tony DeAgostino for a
64-yard strike with 31 sec-
onds left in the half. The
small glimmer of hope for
Petoskey was put out for
good less then 15 seconds
later when Brooks busted out
a 51-yard touchdown for his
5th of the half. The rain con-
tinued in the 2nd half and
Jalen Brooks picked up right
where he left off as he was the
only person in the stadium to
find any daylight, scoring on
the opening offensive play
for the Vikings from 48-yards
out. This was the last of the
scoring for either team as the
rest of the game was played
between the trenches with
neither team wanting to
throw the ball. Brooks carried
28 times for 292 yards and a
six touchdowns, one shy of
the school mark set in the
early 1950s by Bert Zagers,
who went on to play at
Michigan State and in the
National Football League
with the Washington
Redskins.
Some bright spots for the
Northmen came in strong
performances by running
back Nick Strobel who had
the tough job of trying to
rush against the Vikings stel-
lar defensive line led by twin
giants of Jack Ford and Riley
Norman who are both over 6
and a half feet tall and tip the
scales at a modest 270.
Norman has turned down
several football scholarship
offers and will attend
Michigan State next year on a
track and field scholarship.
Ford, who is listed at 6-6 and
270, will play football next
year at Eastern Michigan. On
the defensive side linebacker
Connor Reed showed his
leadership by never giving up
on any play and coming up
with a lot of big tackles.
The Northmen travel to
Traverse City Central for a
league game on Friday, Sept.
14.

QB Quinn
Ameel seeks to
maneuver
for positive
yards as the
Cadillac
defense
closes around
him on Friday.

CHARLEVOIX Give
Charlevoix credit for an
inspired effort. Give Grayling
credit for coming back in a
drenching downpour to pre-
vail in the Lake Michigan
Conference opener.
Graylings 27-13 triumph
pushes its record to 3-0 over-
all and 1-0 in the league with
the HUGE showdown at
home coming this Friday
against perennial rival
Traverse City St. Francis.
Even though this isnt a
league game anymore, its a
game rife with playoff point
opportunities for both
schools. The Gladiators are
coming off a narrow 12-7 vic-
tory over Elk Rapids.
Grayling will be seeking its
first win ever against the
Gladiators. The Vikings have
come VERY close the past
two years, however.
Before Grayling could
think about St. Francis, the
Vikings had to take care of
the business at hand and
beat fired-up Charlevoix in
weather better suited to
water polo. On a night when
the hard rain put a damper
on the Vikings high-powered
air assault, it was strong-
striding senior Ty Jensen
turning on the jets and blast-
ing his way to 125 yards rush-
ing on the slippery turf and
scoring three times. The
other Grayling TD came on a
7-7-yard scoot around end
from silky-smooth sopho-
more Scout Tobin.
A Grayling victory without
a single touchdown pass
happens about as often as
Viking defensive coordinator
Kevin OConnell dyes his hair
green (which is VERY rare).
But the resilient Vikings
made the offensive adjust-
ments that were necessary
and left town with the W
safely tucked away.
This was a big test for us,
said Grayling head coach Tim
Sanchez. We knew
Charlevoix would match up
well against our offense, and
the elements really affected
us more than I would have
liked. However, Coach
OConnell dialed up another
great defensive game plan,
and after those early big
plays, our defense was able
to shut them down for the
rest of the game.
OConnells Carnivores
played voraciously on
defense after allowing a few
big plays early and the young
offensive line of the Vikings,
featuring two sophomore
starters, showed up big on a
night when a successful
ground game was para-
mount.
Sanchez was pleased with
how the offense responded
to the elements and to the
challenges presented by the
Rayders.
Coach Tunneys O-Line
toughened up and we were
able to pound the ball with
our running backs, Sanchez
said. The fact that we were
able to win this game by basi-
cally using a completely dif-
ferent offensive game plan
says a lot about our players
toughness and will to win.
The Jolting Green Giants of
coach Tunney, including
Concrete Charlie Brown,
Nick Smock, Lucas Walesky
and sophomore tackles
Emmett Helsel and Tyler
Wyman, among others,
paved the way for Jensen,
Tobin and junior Kevin
Harris to take handoffs from
QB Jake Swander and launch
like torpedoes through the
lake-like conditions to gain
positive yards.
Jensen generated 125 yards
in 23 carries to go with his
three touchdowns. Harris
hammered out 45 yards in 11
tries and Tobin torpedoed to
22 yards in seven carries with
a TD to his credit.
The slinging Swander had
to holster his gun for most of
the night. When Swander did
go to the air, he hit nearly 50
percent of his attempts,
which was pretty good given
the rain. He connected nine
times for 120 yards, with jun-
ior Tyler McClanahan taking
in four for 61 yards, Tobin
taking in two for 17 yards and
reliable senior Scott
Parkinson pulling down two
for nine yards. Jensen had
one grab out of the backfield
for 33 yards.
On the defensive side,
middle linebacker Wild
Wes Dean, who is having a
whale of a season so far, did-
nt allow the wet to keep him
from putting the Whack on a
dozen enemy ball carriers.
Fellow linebacker Nick
Swiercz, who is also a high-
impact player for OConnell,
made six tackles and recov-
ered two fumbles. The fierce
Swiercz makes a habit of put-
ting himself at the right place
at the right time.

Mancelona 22, Johannesburg-Lewiston 0
Ironmen remain unbeaten with hard-hitting shutout
of Ski Valley South rival J-L in downpour
By Mike Dunn
MANCELONA The heav-
ens rained down a heaping
amount of wet on the mushy
Mancelona turf Friday. At the
same time, the Iron Curtain
defense of the Ironmen
reined in the vaunted
Johannesburg- Lewi st on
wing-T rushing attack and
kept the high-powered
Cardinals off the scoreboard.
Mancelonas 22-0 triumph
pushed its record to 3-0 over-
all and 1-0 in the Ski Valley
South while the Cardinals of
coach John Bush slipped to
1-2 overall and 0-1 in the
league.
This was a typically hard-
fought gridiron battle
between two physical, blue-
collar foes who are accus-
tomed to facing each other
with high stakes riding on the
outcome. For Mancelona, the
win meant extending the
league winning streak to 17
games and the regular-sea-
son winning streak to 20
games dating back to the sea-
son-opening 12-6 loss to
non-league foe Elk Rapids in
2010.
For J-L, it meant a loss to
the grinding Ironmen for the
seventh straight time. (The
last time J-L beat Mancelona
was a 32-0 shutout in 2005
and that marked a streak of
10 straight wins for the
Cardinals over the Ironmen.)
Mancelona head coach
Dan Boo Derrer was natu-
rally pleased with the victory
over the always-tough
Cardinals and he was espe-
cially happy with the effort of
his defense.
We played really well
defensively, Derrer said. It
wasnt just one or two players
standing out; it was the
whole defense. The kids read
their keys and did their job.
We told them they had to be
disciplined and not worry
about making plays all over
the field. They did that and
we were able to keep contain
them pretty much.
It was the Dark Diesel, sen-
ior linebacker Dalton Sulz,
making the big hits in the
muck along with fellow
inside linebacker Luke
Smigielski. The duo led the
way once again with five
tackles apiece on a night
when the Ironmen from
every position were making
plays all over the field.
Defensive end Brandon Scott
barreled in to make five stops
while fellow defensive end
Kevin Schepperley and sen-
ior twin brother Kyle
Schepperley at safety each
made 4.5 tackles.
The Ironmen also forced
one turnover, a first-quarter
fumble pounced on by senior
Wyatt Derrer. That timely
takeaway led to the first
touchdown of the game early
in the second quarter when
the determined Derrer
dashed in from 2 yards away.
Wyatt also wiggled and
whammed his way into the
end zone for the two-point
conversion to put his team
on top 8-0 with 11:02 left
until halftime.
At the 4:50 mark of the
same quarter Wyatt tallied
again, this time on a weaving
24-yard run, to make it 14-0.
Speedy senior halfback
Trevor Ackler accelerated
into the end zone for two
points to increase the lead to
16-0 and thats the way it
stood at the half.
Neither team could get
much offense going in the
third quarter and through
most of the fourth as the rain
prevented either team from
throwing the ball much and
both defenses did a solid job
keeping the other from
mounting sustained drives
on the ground. The host
Ironmen finally closed out
the scoring with 1:14 remain-
ing when Ackler found the
end zone from 4 yards,
motoring behind the plowing
blocks of center Tristen Fleet
and guard Garrett Derrer.
This was a lot like the Elk
Rapids game (a 20-14 victory
in the season opener),
Derrer said. We didnt make
a lot of big plays so we had to
just grind it out. Joburg was
ready for us and played us
tough. It was a very physical
game.
Derrer commended the
efforts of Fleet at center and
Sulz and Garrett Derrer at
guards and also noted the
fierce blocking of Smigielski
at tight end.
Wyatt wound up with 136
yards on 27 carries in the
rain. Ackler accumulated 51
yards in 17 tries and junior
fullback Logan Borst busted
to 50 yards in 13 attempts.
Savvy senior QB Kyle
Schepperley couldnt gener-
ate much through the air
because of the soggy condi-
tions but did carry the ball
five times for 46 yards.
The Cardinals had difficul-
ty getting any kind of offense
untracked on the slippery
turf, generating less than 100
yards for the game. Senior
fullback Mitch Howitzer
Hardy hurled himself for-
ward time after time but met
with continual opposition
from the swarming Ironmen.
Hardy finished with a team-
high 50 yards in 11 carries
and Dillon Kibby dashed and
bashed to 34 yards in 10 tries.
Senior QB Alex Payne con-
nected for two short passes
worth 6 yards.
Drake Skowronski was in
the thick of the action defen-
sively for the Cardinals,
recording a whopping 17
tackles on the night. Logan
Miller made 15 tackles while
Kibby and Payne each accu-
mulated 13 stops and nose
guard Wyatt Pelton produced
10 takedowns.
Mancelona takes its
unbeaten record to Central
Lake this Friday for another
Ski Valley South clash and
Johannesburg is on the road
against winless Forest Area in
a league showdown.
Central Lake (1-2, 1-0) is
coming off a 34-22 decision
win over visiting Gaylord St.
Mary.
Theyve only won one
game but theyve played
pretty tough and theyre 1-0
in the league after being St.
Mary, Derrer said. They
have some big kids up front.
Their backs have pretty good
speed and they run hard.
Central Lake employs the
wing-T scheme on offense.
We have to continue to
play disciplined on defense,
Derrer said. Weve told the
kids that defense wins cham-
pionships. Weve played real-
ly well in all three games so
far. We havent given up over
200 yards to anyone yet.
Derrer wants to see
Mancelona cut down on
penalties when the Ironmen
have the ball.
We have to limit the
penalties and stop shooting
ourselves in the foot, he
said. This is a rivalry game
and a league game. The M-88
Trophy is on the line and we
dont want to give it up.
J-L, which went 8-1 last
year in the regular season,
will look to rebound from
consecutive losses to Inland
Lakes and Mancelona with a
win this Friday at Forest Area.
The Warriors (0-3, 0-1) are
coming off a lopsided defeat
at the hands of Onaway.
Iron Curtain defense is difference!

It felt like a college football
game instead of a high school
game on Saturday afternoon
when the Gaylord Blue Devils
took the field against the
Traverse City West football
team. The game, played at
Thirlby Field, where all 3 TC
school play their football
games has a real college sta-
dium feel along with the 1:00
oclock starting time made
for a unique high school
football experience.
For the third game in a row
the Blue Devils came out hot
scoring on big plays early but
the excitement couldnt be
sustained as the home
Traverse City team won big
by a score of 48-14.
TC got things started early
driving the ball down the
artificial turf in less then 3
minutes scoring on a 3-yard
pass play from QB Donny
Cizek to Griffin Forrester. On
the Blue Devils first series the
electrifying Trae Hill broke
free for a 33-yard score to tie
the game.
Thats when TC Wests QB
went on a terror. Before the
3rd quarter was over he
would throw for 3 touch-
downs and run for another
bumping the score to 34-7 at
the end of the first.
Gaylord coach Doug
Berkshire made some adjust-
ments and the rest of the
game was played much more
competitively. The defense
led by senior middle line-
backer Trent Hunt was able
to penetrate the opposing
offensive line frustrating the
West QB making him much
less effective.
Gaylords offense decided
to try the air attack with sen-
ior QB Tyler Frisch throwing
the ball much more fre-
quently to sophomore Collin
Watters and the sure handed
Michael Skerratt. Both had
stand out plays, but couldnt
sustain long scoring drives.
Gaylords break out player
of the game was senior full-
back Robb Hansen. With the
TC West defense focusing on
catching the 2 speedy backs,
Trae Hill and Cotton Neff,
coach Berkshire decided to
go with more power running
handing the ball to the beefy
230 lb. Hansen for multiple
big gains. By the end of the
game he had racked up 12
carries for 89 yards averaging
over 7 yards a carry.
Gaylords only other score
came in the 4th when Trae
Hill scored again from 9
yards out. The Blue Devils
are in action again Friday
when the travel to Cadillac to
take on the undefeated
Vikings and their dynamic
QB Jalen Brooks who has so
far had his way with oppos-
ing defenses.

PELLSTON It wasnt easy
or pretty, but the Pellston
Hornets of first-year coach
Ben Schley pushed their
record to 3-0 with a tense 7-6
victory over visiting Rogers
City. The Hornet victory in a
drenching downpour also
gave them a 1-0 mark in the
Ski Valley North while the
Hurons, who gave a gritty
effort in defeat, slipped to 0-3
and 0-1.
Pellstons lone TD in the
2012 home opener came in
the first quarter on a 3-yard
toss from senior QB Austin
Wright to angular receiver
Dale Stark after Wright faked
into the line and the long-
armed Stark the Hornets
answer to the Lions
Megatron hauled in the
missile. Stark then added
what proved to be the crucial
point-after kick in spite of the
rain and slick conditions.
Rogers City responded
with its TD on a long pass to
trim the Hornet lead to 7-6.
The visiting Hurons opted to
go for two points in the rain
but Pellston stuffed it. That
would end the scoring on a
night when both teams bat-
tled the wet turf.
The predatory Pellston
defense forced five turnovers
in the contest, including
interceptions from Nitro
Nick Nathan and Kave Man
Kurtis Spencer and fumble
recoveries from opportunis-
tic Chase Woods, Jared
Reiman and Travis Matthews.
Pellston moved the ball
effectively at times with its
tight-T attack, though the
Hornets were not able to visit
the end zone again. One big
key to the victory, though,
was a time-munching, yard-
chewing seven-minute drive
in the fourth quarter that
kept the Huron offense on
the sidelines.
Time after time, Wright
handed the ball to Nathan
and fellow halfbacks Jake
Friedenstab and Chase
Woods and fullback Justin
Price and they powered
behind the blocking of B.K.
Boomer Baylon Kerr, Alex
Readmond, Mark Staley, Mr.
Matthews and company to
keep the chains moving.
Nathan navigated his way
through the muck and mire,
motoring and maneuvering
to a game-high 75 yards of
real estate. Price was right,
too, with his bull-like block-
ing and plow-ahead running,
stomping to 69 yards.
Friedenstab and Woods each
added 21 yards.
Linebacker Justin
Woolever was a wild man in
the rain, flying to the football
and making a team-high
nine stops. Matthews and
Spencer each had seven take-
downs and Price plowed
down five ball carriers.
Pellston has not had a win-
ning record since 1995. That
is also the last year the
Hornets started a season 3-0.
Schleys troops will try to
make it 4-0 this coming
Friday when Rudyard comes
calling for another Ski Valley
North clash. The Bulldogs
come in with a winless
record.
Hornets prevail in downpour!
Pellston holds on to edge Rogers City, push record to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in Ski Valley North

archaeological sites, recre-
ational use, wildfire potential
and social concerns are just
some of the topics taken into
consideration during this
review.
Because the forest is inven-
toried approximately two
years in advance, a year of
entry is assigned to indicate
when treatments will be pre-
pared. Information currently
under review has a 2014 year
of entry. This means that
treatment activities on lands
being reviewed this year will
actually begin in 2014.
Proposed treatments,
which may include timber
harvesting, replanting and
other management activities,
are designed to ensure the
sustainability of all forest
resources.
Bill ONeill, chief of the
DNRs Forest Resources
Division, said these open
houses are a good way for
interested residents, neigh-
bors and stakeholders to
learn well in advance
about the DNRs proposed
treatment plans and to share
input toward final decisions
on those treatments.
When it comes to the
health and sustainability of
our state forests, were always
thinking several years
ahead, said ONeill, who
also serves as state forester.
We like to do the open hous-
es around the state because
the public gets an opportuni-
ty to talk with foresters and
biologists about issues that
matter most to them. It turns
out to be a valuable exchange
of information and ideas.
To more easily and effi-
ciently oversee the forest
resources, the DNR divides
each management unit into
smaller units or "compart-
ments." This year, the com-
partments under review are
in Grant Township
(Cheboygan County);
Bearinger, Ocqueoc,
Bismark, Allis and Krakow
townships (Presque Isle
County); Montmorency,
Vienna, Briley, Hillman and
Albert townships
(Montmorency County);
Wellington, Long Rapids,
Wilson and Ossineke town-
ships (Alpena County);
Frederic, Grayling, Beaver
Creek, South Branch, Lovells
and Maple Forest townships
(Crawford County); and
Greenwood and Elmer town-
ships (Oscoda County).
Maps, information and
other proposed treatments
will be available at the open
houses. The information can
also be found at www.michi-
gan.gov/forestplan under the
Forests, Land & Water sec-
tion. Compartment review
packets for the 2014 year of
entry can be found by click-
ing the Atlanta or
Grayling buttons on the
shown map. Records of deci-
sions, recorded timber har-
vests and other treatments
for past years are available on
these pages.
On Tuesday, Oct. 23, and
Wednesday, Nov. 7, the DNR
will complete its formal com-
partment reviews to decide
on final treatment plans for
these areas. Those reviews
will take place:

MENOMINEE COUNTY --
The Department of Natural
Resources pauses this week
to remember and recognize
the 40th anniversary of the
death of Michigan
Conservation Officer Gerald
Welling. Welling was killed at
approximately 2 a.m. on
Sept. 10, 1972, during a
patrol for illegal bear hunting
activity near Hermansville in
Menominee County. He was
54.
Welling was with his part-
ner, CO William Maycunich,
when the pair observed a
vehicle shining a light at a
local garbage dump. After
stopping of the vehicle, both
officers approached the pick-
up. The driver suddenly sped
forward and struck Welling,
dragging him more than 100
feet.
Maycunich quickly appre-
hended the driver. Welling
was rushed to the local hos-
pital, but was pronounced
dead.
"Conservation Officer
Gerald Welling was killed
protecting the resources he
loved, said DNR Law
Enforcement Division Chief
Gary Hagler. He certainly
was aware of the dangers in
this early-morning com-
plaint, as evidenced by work-
ing with his partner.
Conservation officers can do
everything right and still not
come home at the end of
their shift. We will always
remember those who made
the ultimate sacrifice in the
line of duty.
This year marks the 125th
anniversary of conservation
law enforcement in
Michigan. Welling is one of
12 fallen conservation offi-
cers commemorated on May
15, 2012, when the DNR ded-
icated a memorial to conser-
vation officers who were
killed in the line of duty.
Anyone seeking more
information or who wishes to
contribute to the construc-
tion of the memorial can get
details at www.mcoa-

ONAWAY The rain didnt
slow down the slick Onaway
offense very much on Friday
as the cruising Cardinals of
coach Brian Whitsitt used
explosive plays through the
air and on the ground to gain
a 41-8 triumph over visiting
Forest Area.
The Cardinals improved to
3-0 for the first time since
2005, which was also the last
time they made the playoffs.
They are also 1-0 in the Ski
Valley South as they continue
league play this Friday at
Gaylord St. Mary. The scrap-
py Snowbirds, short on expe-
rience but long on grittiness,
are 0-3 after suffering a 34-22
loss at Central Lake.
Onaway recorded 254
rushing yards on the sloppy
turf and quarterback Matt
Tollini tossed for another 205
yards. The defense forced
three turnovers and turned
two of those turnovers into
touchdowns.
The Cardinals trailed 8-7
after the first quarter but
scored twice in the second
quarter to take a 19-8 lead
into the locker room. A fum-
ble recovery by Jason Sigsby
early in the third quarter led
to a quick-strike air assault
from the Cardinals as Tollini
targeted Noah Bacon out of
the backfield and the sizzling
Bacon brought the ball in
and streamed to a sudden 74-
yard TD and a 27-8 after Chae
Whitsitts whamming two-
point conversion run.
Whitsitt whacked and
wailed his way past the cen-
tury mark on the slippery
grass, gaining 107 yards on 19
carries with an 18-yard TD
burst to his credit. The shifty
Sigsby slammed and sprinted
to 86 yards on 13 carries with
a 9-yard TD run and the ver-
satile Tollini, when he wasnt
launching missiles, amassed
39 yards rushing on five tries
and scored twice on QB
sneaks.
The Atlanta Falcons have
Matty Ice behind center
but Onaway has Matty
Spice and he gave the
offense some real punch with
his arm, his legs and his
smarts. He hit on 9-of-15
passes for 205 yards, includ-
ing a pretty 21-yard fade to
tight end Carlos Bautista in
addition to the 74-yard bomb
to Bacon. Tommy Auger
grabbed two passes for 31
yards and also had an inter-
ception on the other side of
the ball.
Tollini also tore it up
defensively, making a team-
high nine tackles and recov-
ering a fumble. Sigsby put
some of the Sock in the
defense with his seven tack-
les and a fumble recovery.
Whitsitt, Auger and Ryan
Hyde each made six stops
and the aggressive Auger also
forced a fumble in addition
to his interception. Double C,
Chris Cleaver, put some
charge into the defense also,
making five takedowns in the
rain.
Pickford 36
Inland Lakes 14
INDIAN RIVER Host
Inland Lakes, facing depth
issues because of injuries,
scrapped and clawed and
battled and stayed within a
touchdown of visiting
Pickford in the first half of
Fridays rainy Ski Valley North
opener. The visitors from the
U.P. had too much firepower
in the second half, however,
and pulled away.
I-Lakes, coming off the
dramatic win on the road
against Johannesburg-
Lewiston the week before,
could not sustain four quar-
ters of hard, physical play
with a thin roster and fell to
1-2 and 0-1 after the 36-14
loss to Pickford.
They were very physical,
I-Lakes head coach Stan
Schramm said of the
Panthers. We were already
banged up gong into the
game and we got more
banged up. They just took the
momentum away from us.
Strong-striding senior
Cody Bonilla continues to
have a solid season for the
Bulldogs. He pushed and
pounded his way to 95 yards
in 17 carries and scored one
of the two I-Lakes touch-
downs. Fullback Shane
Bacon grinded and grilled his
way to a tough 65 yards on
nine attempts and he also
scored a TD. C.J. Ogden
crossed the goal line for a
two-point conversion.
Ogden was active on
defense, taking down
Panther ball carriers 13
times, and Spiderman Nick
Parker was super also, trip-
ping up Panthers 12 times.
Bonilla shined on defense
once again, making his third
pick of the young season.
I-Lakes look to turn it
around on the home field
this Friday when unbeaten
St. Ignace comes to town.
The Saints are coming off a
forfeit win over Rudyard.
Central Lake 34
St. Mary 22
CENTRAL LAKE The vis-
iting Snowbirds came back in
the second half to tighten
things on the scoreboard but
could not climb out of the
huge early deficit on Friday
at Central Lake. The Trojans
(1-2, 1-0) won 34-22 in the
Ski Valley South opener for
both teams.
St. Mary (0-3, 0-1) will be
seeking its first win of the
season on the home field this
Friday when unbeaten
Onaway (3-0, 1-0) comes
calling. The explosive
Cardinals are coming off a
41-8 triumph over Forest
Area.
We need to block better
and tackle better, said St.
Mary coach Denny
YoungeDyke. Onaway has a
bunch of good, fast athletes
and the one way we can be
competitive with them is to
block and tackle.
In the loss at Central Lake,
the Snowbirds fell behind 34-
0 before coming back to
score the last three touch-
downs of the game. It was a
similar scenario to the week
before when St. Mary fell
behind Pellston in the first
half before coming back to
make things closer in the sec-
ond half.
Against the Trojans, it was
senior Matt Spyhalski break-
ing free twice on counter
traps to reach the end zone
on carries of 59 and 60 yards,
one in the third quarter and
one in the fourth.
Matt ran over, through
and around people to score
those touchdowns,
YoungeDyke said. It was a
challenge for us to get the
running game going in the
rain because our passing
game wasnt effective. Matt
got the ball and said youre
not going to tackle me. It was
nice to see that kind of effort.
Nick Lochinski is a senior,
too, and he gave the same
kind of effort.
Spyhalski finished with
more than 100 yards rushing
to lead the Snowbirds. Junior
speedster Nick Harrington
earned 67 yards worth of
tough real estate on the night
and scored the Snowbirds
other TD on a 2-yard plunge.
Cornerbacks Jack
Lochinski and Harrington
were St. Marys leading tack-
lers with 12 apiece.

Johannesburg-Lewiston 40
Mancelona 22
JOHANNESBURG The
young Johannesburg-
Lewiston Cardinals of coach
Joe Smokevitch remained
unbeaten last Thursday with
an impressive 40-22 triumph
over Ski Valley South foe
Mancelona.
The Cardinals built a 40-0
before the resilient Ironmen
rallied in the final quarter-
and-a-half to score all three
of their touchdowns.
The J-L backfield of Huff
and May, Inc. rolled up 343
yards of wing-T rushing in
the game, including 118
yards of turf in 15 carries
from the blue-collar blaster
Lunch Truck Logan Huff,
who also plunged across the
goal line to score the first
touchdown for the Cardinals.
The May Day attack fea-
turing Ethan May and Nick
May combined for 133 yards
and four TDs and QB
Brandon Huff busted to 40
yards in seven tries with a TD
run to his credit. Ethan May
maneuvered and mauled his
way to 83 yards in nine car-
ries and scored on TD bursts
of 10, 14 and 24 yards. Nick
May picked up 50 yards in
eight tries with an 18-yard
score on his stat line.
Dale Wells also generated
27 yards in six carries and Jac
Bandt bulled his way to 25
yards in 10 attempts.
Mancelona was staring at a
40-point deficit midway
through the third quarter but
coach Doug Derrers troops
refused to capitulate. The
young Ironmen battled back
in the final 19 minutes to
trim J-Ls lead in half and
have something positive to
build on for this weeks game
with Central Lake.
Sophomore Cole
VanWagoner, Mancelonas
Flying V.W., found a seam and
raced 61 yards to paydirt to
account for the visitors first
TD of the night. Then Chase
Wilcox churned up the turf
en route to a 24-yard tally late
in the third quarter before
Chris Nielson closed out the
scoring with a 33-yard rum-
ble midway through the
fourth quarter with Tyler
Fults adding the extra point.
VanWagoner concluded
another productive night
with 114 yards rushing on
eight carries while Wilcox
whacked and whammed his
way to 58 yards on 12 tries
and Nielson picked up 45
yards on five carries.
Wilcox corralled ball carri-
ers 10 times to lead
Mancelona on defense.
Nielson took down runners
eight times. C.J. Short and
Outlaw Jesse Janus gener-
ated five tackles apiece.

PETOSKEY The Petoskey
girls dominated play on
Saturday, Sept. 8, in the 31st
annual invitational tourna-
ment hosted by the
Northmen.
Petoskey improved to 17-
2-2 while 6-0 on the day,
including a 25-21 decision
over T.C. St. Francis in the
semifinals and a 25-14, 25-18
win over Mount Pleasant in
the finals.
In pool play, the Northmen
whipped Harbor Springs (25-
6, 25-8), Pellston (25-8, 25-
12), St. Francis (25-21, 25-14)
and Onaway (25-8, 25-17).
Senior middle hitter
Megan Tompkins and senior
setter Shannon Cosens
shined for the Northmen,
both earning spots on the
All-Tournament team.
Tompkins was a towering
terror at the net, tagging a
team-high 55 kills to go with
17 blocks, 30 digs and six
aces. Cosens fed her team-
mates the ammunition to
keep the guns firing. She
accumulated 118 assists on
the day and also had 15 kills
herself and 40 digs.
Liz Fraser was fantastic in
the back row, covering the
floor like a fresh coat of wax
as she accumulated 67 digs.
Fraser was a fury up front as
well, recording 33 kills.
Alyssa VanWerden
whacked 29 kills with 50 digs
and served with surgical pre-
cision. Kelsey Ance cracked
23 kills with 47 digs, five
blocks and nine aces.
Besides the loss to
Petoskey, Pellston also lost to
Onaway 25-15, 25-12, defeat-
ed Harbor Springs 25-19, 25-
17 and split with St. Francis
17-25, 25-19.
"We were out of sync from
the first set of the day and
weren't able to find our nor-
mal rhythm," Pellston coach
Brooke Groff said.
Sophomore outside hitter
Mackenzie Wright recorded
24 kills and 18 digs and sen-
ior outside hitter Victoria
Rybinski rattled out 18 kills to
go with 32 digs and seven
aces. Senior right-side hitter
Tori Kirsch crushed 17 kills
with eight digs while senior
libero Dana Zulski delivered
43 digs and junior setter
Abbie Welch wound up with
40 assists and 18 digs.

finish line before anybody
else on the miry course.
Petoskey finished fourth in
the final boys team stand-
ings with Inland Lakes sev-
enth, Johannesburg-
Lewiston 14th, Gaylord St.
Mary 18th, Grayling 21st and
Cheboygan 22nd.
In the girls side, Gaylord
took fifth overall and third in
the large school division. J-L
was sixth, Petoskey 10th,
Mackinaw City 12th, Inland
Lakes 14th, Cheboygan 15th,
Gaylord St. Mary 18th,
Grayling 21st and Pellston
24th.
Howards success on the
challenging Charlevoix
course did not surprise
Gaylord coach Jeff Kalember.
Over the summer he
logged 600-plus miles and
this base is paying dividends
already, Kalember said. He
deserved the win today and
led from start to finish.
Howard wasnt the only
Blue Devil doing well,
though. The Blue Devil boys
formed a tight pack.
I always know we have
Charlend and Nate (Fischer)
as front-runners for us, but
our 3-4-5-6 guys are RIGHT
there with them lately in
races which is a great sign,
Kalember said.
The races were divided
into 9-10 and 11-12 divisions.
Howard was first among
everyone in his time of 17:45
with Fischer fifth in 18:21 and
Sterling McPherson seventh
in 18:44. Sophomore Collin
Monusko, who was third
overall in the 9-10 boys race,
was fourth overall for the
Gaylord boys in 18:45 fol-
lowed by Josh Green (19:03,
14th 11-12), Ian Callison
(19:07, 17th 11-12), Chris
Ryan (19:56, 29th 11-12) and
Ian Rudel (20:01, 32nd 11-
12).
Kalember was particularly
pleased with Monuskos
third-place finish in the 9-10
race.
Collin has improved
markedly from his freshman
campaign and I'm looking
for big things from him this
year, the veteran coach said.
Petoskey earned fourth
place with a combined time
of 1:34:46 from its top seven.
Mark Smith surged to a
sixth-place time of 18:29 in
the 11-12 race to pace the
Northmen. Tom
VanSlembrouk, who was run-
ner-up in the 9-10 race, was
also runner-up for Petoskey
in 18:38 followed by Logan
Hensely (18:50, 10th 11-12),
Max Meyerson (18:51, fourth
9-10), Quentin Fettig (19:58,
30th 11-12), Jake Kromm
(20:07, 13th 9-10) and Danny
Clancy (20:41, 38th 11-12).
Individuals who shined
included Hunter Kilpatrick of
Pellston, who took 18th in
the 11-12 race in 19:08, and
Andrew Morehouse of
Johannesburg, who was 20th
in 19:13.
Connor Kintz of Pellston
(19:18, 23rd 11-12) and
Duane Vizina of Inland Lakes
(19:19, 24th) also finished in
the top 25 and Drewll
Pobuda of St. Mary (19:43)
was a respectable 27th over-
all to lead the Snowbirds.
On the girls side, Gaylord
was fifth behind T.C. Central,
Harbor Springs, Charlevoix
and Cadillac.
Katelynn Dreyer paced the
Blue Devils with her 11th-
place time of 22:32 in the 11-
12 race. She was followed
closely by Ellen Seidell
(23:06, 15th), Geena Duff
(23:30, 18th) and Maria
Warren (23:35, 19th). The
Blue Devils top four were in
the top 20 with Erin
Borgeson (25:10, 35th),
Megan Stempky (25:52,
42nd) and Cindy Fiser (26:07,
43rd) taking the fifth, sixth
and seventh spots.
The top four are racing
well right now and when we
get Noelle Warren back
(Achilles injury), we will be
much better, Kalember said.
Right now we're looking
every day, every practice for
girls in the pack to step up
and take charge as the fifth
girl.
Others who shined on
Saturday for the girls in the
11-12 race included Chrissy
Smith of Gaylord St. Mary,
who was 13th overall in
23:02; Hannah Passino of
Inland Lakes, who finished
20th in 23:37, and Nadine
Peterson of Johannesburg-
Lewiston, who was 24th in
24:19. Chloe Johnston of J-L
was 30th in 24:50 and Katie
Kierczynski of J-L was 31st in
24:51. Claire Brummer of
Petoskey (25:26) came in
39th.
In the girls 9-10 race,
Mandy Paull of Cheboygan
propelled to a strong sixth-
place time of 20:55 to pace
the Chiefs. Maddy
Showerman poured it on to
take 10th in 22:07 with
Sydney Hopp (23:02, 17th)
and Melissa Myers (23:52,
22nd) of Petoskey also finish-
ing in the top 25.

New Ford F-150
Limited
Photo coPyRiGht FoRd MotoR coMPany
Building on three decades of truck leadership and a decade of luxury pickup inno-
vation, Ford marks the 2013 model year with its most refined F-150 yet.
Ford, the
industrys truck
leader, marks the
launch of the lat-
est F-150 with a
new statement
on pickup luxury
for 2013 the F-
150 Limited.
Ford leads the
luxury truck seg-
ment. In 1999,
the company
introduced the
special-edition
2000 Harley-
Davidson F-150.
In 2001, the first
King Ranch F-150 arrived. The 2009
F-150 took truck luxury to new
heights with the Platinum model.
Limited meets the still untapped
and growing luxury needs of cus-
tomers and dealers interested in
exclusivity and fine craftsmanship
who want to differentiate themselves
from other high-end options. F-150
Limited surpasses the well-appoint-
ed Lariat, western-themed King
Ranch and contemporary Platinum.
The 2013 Ford F-150 Limited
design combines unique 22-inch
polished aluminum wheels and cen-
ter caps with a monochromatic exte-
rior theme available in three hand-
some hues Ruby Red Metallic
Tinted Clearcoat, Tuxedo Black
Metallic and White Platinum
Metallic Tri-Coat. The theme carries
through the F-150 Limited exterior
design with body-color front and
rear bumpers, front bumper valance,
sideview mirror caps, wheel-lip
molding, upper fascia and grille sur-
round.
Segment-first HID headlamps pro-
vide a signature look while deliver-
ing two-and-a-half times more light
than conventional halogen lamps.
Lamp detailing even incorporates F-
150 insignias. Jewel-like chrome
highlights the bold three-bar grille,
tie-down hooks lining the cargo box,
the single tip of the tuned exhaust
and the tow hooks on 4x4 variants.
LIMITED dimensional lettering
accents the box sides. F-150 Limited
is available exclusively with a
SuperCrew four-door cab configura-
tion.
Rich red and black full-grain
leather-trimmed seats take luxury
and style to new heights in trucks
capitalizing on a trend seen in other
high-end luxury vehicles. The seats
also offer cooling and heating with
memory functionality to remember
seating preferences for two different
drivers. Head restraints are four-
way-adjustable and second-row
seats are heated, too.
Connectivity comes standard with
MyFord Touch powered by SYNC.
Designers have optimized the physi-
cal interface for MyFord Touch to
accommodate truck users who may
be wearing work gloves by providing
easy access to climate controls and
audio presets on the center stack.
Limited offers a unique gauge
cluster design with a 4.2-inch driver-
programmable productivity screen
that can be customized to monitor
various vehicle systems. The new
series level also includes a media
hub with USB ports, an SD-card
reader and RCA video input jacks. A
powerful Sony Audio System is
standard.
F-150 Limited is powered exclu-
sively by Fords ground breaking 3.5-
liter Ti-VCT EcoBoost engine, fea-
turing 365 horsepower at 5,000 rpm
on regular fuel, unsurpassed 22 mpg
highway for 4x2 model, and twin
independent variable camshaft tim-
ing for improved fuel economy. Up
to 90 percent peak torque is avail-
able from 1,700 rpm to 5,000 rpm,
and to complement that power,
sport-tuned dampers are fitted front
and rear for confidence-inspiring
road dynamics.
F-150 Limited arrives at dealer-
ships this fall.

Decisions
Part 4 of 4
Garages
Attached.
Pros: Cheaper to
build. Convenient if
raining or snowing.
Cons: Higher noise
levels inside the home
from cars. Some people
feel they are an eye
sore. If the garage door
to the house self locks,
you could get locked
out at an inopportune
time.
Detached.
Pros: Can be tucked
away from site lines.
Quieter.
Cons: More expen-
sive to build. Farther to
walk in bad weather.
Additional
Considerations
School districts.
Special amenities
such as fireplaces,
pools or spas.
Condition of plumb-
ing, electrical, heating
& cooling units.
Available utilities
such as cable or DSL,
satellite.
Sewer or septic con-
nections.
Fixers. If you're
handy with tools, you
might save a lot of
money if you consider
homes that need minor
improvements, fresh
paint or new carpeting.
