GlacieriseverythingmyfriendMarciahasbeensaying foryears:stunningviews,greathikes,fewervisitorsand aCanadianside.ThisshotisfromGoingTotheSun Highway,a52milepassagethroughthecontinental dividewhichisinfactsafertodoonamotorcycle. Theresmoreroomontheedgewhenoncomingmotor homesswervepasttheyellowlineoncurves.Theroad (whichisunderconstruction)scramblesup6,600feetto LoganPass,thendownadoubleblackdiamondruntoSt.MarysLakeandontoWatertonParkontheCanadianside. HereIamshiveringwithglaciersrecedinginthedistance;StMarysLake ringedinglaciers;andonthe Canadianside,thePrinceof WalesHotelwherewesipped highteawithcrumpetsand sconesandcucumber sandwicheswiththecrustscut off.Actually,Isipped,Olavo snickeredatourkilted waiter,thewholeParaIngles verexperience,andthe$30 pricetag(waycheaperthana flighttoLondonandthetea wasjustasgood).Wehikedon sundappledtrailsthrough storybookgrovesofancientcypress,overbouldersfurrywithmosstolakes andwaterfalls.Withthehikesoutoftheway,OlavohappilyheadedbacktoBearToothPass,justnorthofYellowstone. Thepasswastechnical,motorcycletalkforscaryas hell.BearToothtraversesagravelstrewntwolanepath through12,000ftsheergranitewallswhichweburst throughinadrivingrain.Thesecondtime,thepassin reverse,wasntquiteasterrifying,relativelydryandnot solitteredwithcarsbreakinginfrontofus,butwewere ABOVEthecloudline.

    TherestofthetripwasspentvisitingwithmyfirstandsecondJordancousins,andafewcanyons.Wehelpedmycousin Chestercelebratehis70thBDaywithanauthenticLithuaniandinnercompletewithhomebakedbread,kugula,kraut andtheverysamecakeaswasbakedforhis30thbirthday.ChetsdaughterDebbieisanamazingcook,sheandher husbandevenmadethesausage.Thegirlmakesherownicecreamandbuysflourin5galloncontainers.Hemadeall thefurnitureinthehouse.Hell,theyevenbuildthehouseinwhichtheyservedthedinner.EvenmyLithuanian grandparentswouldhavebeenproud. InNortheasternArizonawehitCanyondeChelley,asadbutbeautifulravine,partoftheNavajoNation.Therusty sandstonecliffsascendathousandfeetfromacanyonfloordottedwithcottonwoodscrowdingatwistedstreamand verdant,ifsporadicfarms.Asingleclusterofrockdwellingsdatingperhapstothe1300sclutchesanindentationinthe sheerwalls.ThesadpartaretheIndiansthemselves,somesellingcrudetrinketsandlivinginramshackletrailersalong thegorgeothersissuetrafficviolationstotheoutofstatespeedersinfrontofgarish,neonlit,roadsidecasinos. TheticketsarewrittenfordiscountedspeedsandcanbefoughtinTribalCourt.Thecasinoparkinglotsarepacked.

    OutsideofElPasowestoppedatHuecoTanks,anunderfundedTexas StateParkwiththelargestcollectionofpostandpreColumbianIndian rockpaintingsinNorthAmerica.HuecoTanksisahighdesert collectionofhollows(huecos)whichholdrainwaterlongafterthe surroundingdesertdries.Pictographsandpetroglyphsfrompossibly 6,000BCarescatteredaround,onandunderrockshelves.Theoldest arefaintshadowsofgeometriclines.Thunderboltsmaybeorcomb shapedscratchesperhapsladders?Itooklotsofphotosbutonlya fewofthemasksaredecipherablealongwiththemuchlaterApache paintingsofwarpartiesandfertilityrites. WealsosawmycousinJoannandherhusbandattheirlovelynew homeinLasCruses.TheytooktotheoldMesillaPlazaforfishtacosconsalsapicante,salsaverde,salsamole,chile arbolsalsa,quesocotija.MuyBueno!ItwasTHEbestMexicanfoodofthetrip.
