Foundation Focus
On June 28, when the Supreme Court upheld the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), our country opened a new and promising chapter for health care access and quality. As RWJF President and Chief Executive Officer Risa LavizzoMourey stated, Todays ruling by the Supreme Court permits the implementation process to continue in full force, and [the Foundation looks] forward to working with everyone who shares our goals to make meaningful improvements in the health and health care of our country. Not surprisingly, the ruling also introduced a new stage of lively public debate about howand in some areas, whetherto implement key parts of the law. Nonetheless, we find ourselves in exciting, largely uncharted territory. What are the rulings implications for the many uninsured and underserved people in this country? How can the PPACA best be implemented? And where do we go from here? So weve sought the perspective of the expertsyouon these questions. Your answers have appeared in numerous Human Capital (HC) forums, beginning the week after the ruling was announced. On the RWJF Human Capital Blog, 13 individual grantees and alumni took part in a blog carnival on the ruling and the PPACA, applying their expertise to topics ranging from the rulings implications for health disparities to its potential effects on voters. A live (and lively!) chat on the Grantee Network (you can find a recording there) featured two distinguished HC alumnae: Kavita Patel, MD, MSHS, of the RWJF Clinical Scholars; and Nancy Ridenour, PhD, RN, of the RWJF Health Policy Fellows and Executive Nurse Fellows. They were joined by two of the Foundations senior leadership team: John

Lumpkin, MD, MPH, and Sue Hassmiller, PhD, RN, FAAN. Over 50 other HC grantees took part. They all discussed the implications of the PPACA for the health care workforce and coordination of care, the rulings impact on the provision of Medicaid services, and much more. (Insightful views on the law are also on our newly redesigned website, RWJF.org. Ill have more to say about the redesign in the next issue of Leaders Link, but for now, Ill simply encourage you to visit when the new site debuts in September!) Wed love to know what other HC grantees are thinkingand, for many of you, experiencing on the jobas the implementation of the PPACA unfolds. You can contribute to a running discussion on the Grantee Network about the ruling and the law (go to the Discussions tabif you havent joined yet, email hcfeedback@rwjf.org for an invitation). You can add your comments to any of the existing posts about the Courts ruling on the HC blog, or comment on related posts on the RWJF Facebook page. These are truly remarkable times. Let us know how youon the leading edge of research, policy, and leadership in health and health care, and in the health care workforcefeel about the challenges and opportunities ahead. Research Roundup
Physician Faculty Scholars Reshma Jagsi, MD, DPhil, (09) published Gender Differences in the Salaries of Physician Researchers in JAMA (June 13, 2012). Jagsi and colleagues set out to determine whether salaries differ by gender in a relatively homogeneous cohort of physician researchers, and if so, whether these differences are explained by specialization, productivity, or other factors. A nationwide postal survey was sent to the 1,729 living recipients of the National Institutes of Health K08 and K23 awards in 20022003 for whom a mailing address could be located; the response rate was 71 percent. The mean salary within the cohort was

competition, and the industry as a whole, you can gain insight into how your topic is perceived and discussed by outsiders, and respond to the coverage as appropriate. Free resources are available on the Internet to monitor news coverage by typing key words, such as the name of your study, into popular Web search engines such as Google and AltaVista. However, this will track only online citations and sifting through the data is time-consuming. Paid resources allow for more specific searches and provide a broader range of media hits (both print and online) than free search tools.
