FORMAT
CFC USA will use the series of teachings from the US Bishops as the weekly discussion topic within the usual format of a Household meeting. It is recommended that we allow sufficient time (1 to 1-1/2 hours for discussion). It would also facilitate a deeper understanding and more fruitful discussion of the topic if the leaders (especially) and the HH members prayerfully read ahead of the meeting: 1.) the statement from the CFCUSA National Council in solidarity with the US Bishops; 2.) the weekly discussion topic material which point to certain paragraphs of the Bishops document on Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship as well as certain Church documents (Catechism, etc.) that are referred to by the study material. A suggested outline for each household meeting follows: Praise & Worship (20-30 minutes) Discussion Topic for the week (1 1-1/2 hours) 1. Watch brief video from USCCB (if internet connection available; otherwise encourage members to view at home) 2. Review of Faithful Citizenship section of the week. Summarize/identify major themes in readings. Possibly discuss any points of confusion, etc. 3. Read and Contemplate Scripture passages. Allow 5-10 minutes for silent reflection on the Scripture passages provided. 4. Read through Passages from Encyclicals & Catechism 5. Discuss Reflection Questions. Men may discuss separately from the women in order to give everyone a chance to share and if desired can get together afterwards as whole group to discuss a few key points or issues that come up for further clarification. 6. Look Ahead to Next Week. Participants should read applicable sections of Faithful Citizenship. Leaders should be familiar with and reflect on readings in advance of weekly meetings. 7. Closing Prayers. Prayer intentions suggested by USCCB that correspond to each weeks themes are included at the end of this material, or group members can share their own intentions. Read and Contemplate Scripture Passage. Allow a few minutes for silent reflection.
I urge you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, your spiritual worship. Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect. (Rom 12:1-2) Conscience is a judgment of reason whereby the human person recognizes the moral quality of a concrete act that he is going to perform, is in the process of performing, or has already completed. In all he says and does, man is obliged to follow faithfully what he knows to be just and right. (CCC 1778)

Families in the Holy Sp irit Renewing the Face of the Earth 2012 Theme: Proclaim the greatness of the Lord Luke 1:46-55 commandments oblige always and under all circumstances does not mean that in the moral life prohibitions are more important than the obligation to do good indicated by the positive commandment. (Pope John Paul II, Veritatis Splendor (1993), no. 52)
QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION / REFLECTION 1. What from the readings resonated with you? Challenged you? 2. Why is it important for Catholics to both fight evil and to work for good? How do the negative and positive commandments work hand in hand? How do you personally work to avoid evil and do good? 3. Have you or anyone you know ever fallen victim to either of the two temptations in public life mentioned in Faithful Citizenship? Describe. How are each of these temptations a distortion of the Churchs defense of human life? 4. The Church has always been clear that it does not support any party or endorse any candidates, but how can the Churchs teachings help guide our decisions about voting?
