ThereisagreatdealofexposedrockinArches,andmuchofitis spottedwithmulticoloredlichens.Lichensusuallygrowonnorthfacing surfacessincereducedsolarradiationisanadvantageformany organismsinthedesert.Lichensalsocolonizehealthy,mature cryptobioticsoilcrust,andoccasionallyonliveordeadplantmaterial. ManyspeciesoflichenarefoundinArches. Alichenisactuallyasimplecommunityofatleasttwoorganisms, namelyfungiwithgreenalgaeorcyanobacteria,thoughsometimes withboth.Thelichenstructureismoreelaborateanddurablethan eitherfungioralgaealone.Greenalgaeandcyanobacteria manufacturefoodviaphotosynthesis,whilefungiprovideabuffer againstweatherandarecapableofextractingnutrientsfromsoiland rock. Lichensarewelladaptedtoaridclimates.Theycancarryonfood productionatanytemperatureabove32Fahrenheit.Lichenscan absorbmorethantheirownweightofwater,andcanabsorb temporarywaterlikedewalmostdirectlyintotheiralgalcells(the waterdoesnotneedtogothroughrootsandstemsasitdoesin vascularplants). Manyplantsbenefitfromthepresenceoflichens.Thecyanobacterial componentoflichenscantransformatmosphericnitrogen(unusable tomostorganisms)intoaformthatisanessentialnutrientforlife. Thisisespeciallyimportantindesertecosystems,wherelackof nitrogenisknowntolimitproductivity.
