South Georgia Colleges Kappa Sigma chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for college students, held its Spring Induction for new members on April 23 in the Peterson Hall Art Gallery.

Mary Esther Braswell and David Medders were honored at the Phi Theta Kappa Spring All-Georgia Academic Team Awards Luncheon held in Atlanta. They were both nominated for the All-USA/Coca Cola College Academic Team.
Frank Malinowski, PTK Regional Coordinator, presents Advisor Amy Hancock with the Horizon Award at the Georgia Spring Regional Conference.
Christy Lawrence attended the fifth annual Principled Leader Symposium at the Citadel in South Carolina. The two-day program exposed participants to the true Citadel experience while exploring leadership across a range of vocations and professional organizations.
Advisor Amy Hancock and members Amanda Shively and Katie Holliday attended the Georgia Region Honors in Action Spring Conference hosted by Alpha Psi Omicron of Georgia Highlands College. During the two-day event, several workshops on the Honors Study Topic, The Culture of Competition, were presented and activities related to the competition theme were held. Special guests included Esteban Smith, the PTK International Vice President for Division II and Georgia Iditarod champion Bill Borden. Borden not only finished the race, but he was only one of 540 to do so in the races 39-year history. The Kappa Sigma chapter was recognized for achieving the five-star level in of the Five-Star Chapter Development plan and elected as the Chapter Relations officer for the Georgia Region. Advisor Amy Hancock was given the Horizon Award for Advisors by the Georgia Region.
Faculty Scholar Conference Phi Theta Kappa Center of Excellence ~ Jackson, MS and University of Denver ~ Denver, CO
Amy Hancock was selected as one of 25 advisors from almost 3,000 nationwide to serve as Faculty Scholar for the PTK Honors Institute held in the summer. The group attended the annual Faculty Scholar Conference, sponsored in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities, at the PTK Center for Excellence in Jackson, Miss. in February. The group convened for Part II of the Conference in the days leading up to the Honors Institute in Denver, Colo. in June. The Faculty Scholars lead a group of 20 honor students in seminar discussions of the issues presented by experts on the topic throughout the week. As part of each Faculty Scholar conference, the group visited several areas of interest in the region relating to the Culture of Competition theme.

An information session and orientation was held in the fall for students interested in Phi Theta Kappa. Members will be invited to attend a Scholarship Showcase fall semester. Students will learn about the over 700 scholarships that are available, become familiar with CollegeFish, and obtain assistance in applying for online scholarships. Students will be able to participate in the Honors Study Topic: The Culture of Competition by working on the Honors in Action project. The Kappa Sigma chapter will be participating in the local Relay for Life in the spring and the local Blood Drive. Watch for details. The Georgia Region of PTK selected the Kappa Sigma chapter as the Chapter Relations officer for this term. Austin Vickers serves as the Regional officer for our chapter.
