"No Hate in Our State!"

KY Farm Bureau protest success
The Kentucky Farm Bureau's (KFB) 49th Annual Country Ham Breakfast had an unexpected addition to its program at the state fair this year--a peaceful Fairness Campaign protest to draw attention to the insurance company's myriad discriminatory policies.

With explicit stances against LGBT rights, unionized labor, a woman's right to choose, and more, Kentucky Farm Bureau is likely our state's largest anti-Fairness lobbying group, unbeknownst to most of its members and employees. For the past several years, the Fairness Campaign has made it part of our mission at the Kentucky State Fair to raise public awareness of KFB's policies and hopefully have them removed. Lining the buffet in blue Fairness shirts detailing the company's discriminatory positions, our protest garnered coverage from each local news station and pushed a KFB spokesperson to finally address the issues on record. WHAS-11's Joe Arnold pressed Daniel Smaldone on whether or not the policies are up for debate: "That's for our membership to decide," he finally said. Let us hold them to that! Continue contacting KFB to let them know you oppose their anti-Fairness efforts!

LMPD-LGBT Academy Begins Oct. 10

13-week program free for all
The Louisville Metro Police Department has reached out to partner with the Fairness Campaign on a citizens' police academy geared towards our Fairness community. The 13week program is free with registration and runs every Wed., 7 p.m. beginning Oct. 10. Each week will bring a different experience, and participants will receive commendation from Mayor Greg Fischer and Chief Steve Conrad upon completion of the academy. You will get to witness the inner workings of the LMPD from detectives and officers out in our community every day. Participants will tour LMPD facilities, get up close and personal with the LMPD helicopter and river patrol, and hear from experts working in the Crime Scene Unit, K-9 and mounted patrols, Violent Crimes/Homicide Unit, and more. Recognizing the LMPD has sometimes had--at best--a strained relationship with the Fairness community, each week's program includes an open dialogue and exchange of ideas between participants and LMPD officials. This is a unique opportunity for members of our community to not only learn how LMPD operates, but also to teach our city's police force what it means to be part of a marginalized population when dealing with law enforcement. Call 502.893.0788 or e-mail Laura@Fairness.org to register.

Thinking About Parenting

LGBT Foster/Adoptive Orientation Oct. 18
With more than 2,000 Kentucky kids eligible for adoption right now and over 7,000 youth currently in the state's care, there are so many infants, children, and teens who desperately need a loving, stable home, and you could help! Have you ever thought about being a foster or adoptive parent? Even if you are unsure, or are not planning for the near future, you should attend this brief orientation presented by NECCO at the Fairness Campaign office Oct. 18, Thurs., 6:30 p.m. You can learn the requirements for being a foster or adoptive parent and what that actually entails. The time you spend at the orientation can be deducted from the state-required training to become a foster or adoptive parent, and you will move one step closer to giving a child--and maybe yourself--the family you have always wanted! LGBT singles and those married or partnered are all encouraged to become foster and adoptive parents. Foster parents earn an average of $35 per day and have the gratification of bringing stability and happiness to a child's life! Call 502.893.0788 or e-mail Laura@Fairness.org for more information on the orientation.

Stop Smoking for Free--Patches included!

Louisville Metro Public Health & Wellness is proud to offer their highly successful 13-week Cooper Clayton Smoking Cessation Program to all members of our community for free. Weekly onehour sessions are held all across Louisvlle and include education, skills training, group support, and nicotine replacement therapy patches. Contact 502.574.STOP or StopSmoking@LouisvilleKY.gov.

Eastern KY Organizer Hired

Meet Berean for Fairness Katherine Grigg
Berean for Fairness member Katherine Grigg has been tapped by the Fairness Coalition as its first Eastern Kentucky regional organizer, charged with mobilizing Fairness supporters and resources in Madison County, the Hazard region, and other parts of Eastern Kentucky. A former AmeriCorps National Civilian Eastern KY organizer Community Corps team leader and corps Katherine Grigg member, Grigg has vast experience in rural organizing and nature conservation. She holds a B.A. in Biology and Environmental Studies from Knox College in Galesburg, IL and is an original member of Bereans for Fairness.

She recently joined other local leaders to address Berea's Mayor and City Council, where they celebrated the one-year anniversary of the city's Human Rights Commission and urged officials to bring a local anti-discrimination Fairness ordinance to a vote. Meanwhile in Richmond, the city commission is moving more slowly than their Berean neighbors to protect lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender residents, but they are moving forward nonetheless! Following an incident of discrimination against a young lesbian couple in E.C. Million Park, hundreds of Richmond residents rallied before city hall and called on Mayor Jim Barnes and the commission to pass a local Fairness law. Commissioner Blythe, along with other officials, suggested it was finally time to take up the issue. They are currently weighing "all sides" of the Fairness debate to determine next steps. In the meantime, Grigg and other locals will keep up the pressure!
