Just a couple of kilometers up the road from Nadi International Airport, Jeremy and Jonathan Ullrich brew New Zealand hops and malt into Fijian beer. The brothers Vonu Pure Lager is already in Fijis bars and resorts, and from next month will be quenching the thirsts of premium beer drinkers in the United States. The company hopes to ride the coattails of Fiji Water, the water brand sipped by Barack Obama, Scarlett Johansson and Lady Gaga. Theyve done a really good job of getting Fiji on the map so from our point of view we were looking for something that might be a product opportunity to take another product from Fiji, says Jeremy Ullrich. Deals signed with big American distributors, the key to unlocking the lucrative US market, will see Vonu available in bars and supermarkets in Hawaii and California before the end of the year. The Ullrich brothers say the plan is to prove the brand in those markets before scaling up with a $30 million investment partnership with a big beverage company. New Zealand drinkers will have to travel to Fiji to sample Vonu Pure, which is unlikely to be available in New Zealand for another year. Jeremy Ullrich says the past three years have been challenging but worth it. In reality, if it was easy to do in Fiji 10 other people would have done it. It is a natural barrier to entry and I think that is what excited us as well, he said.

One of the six Asian nationals accused of murdering a fellow countryman outside a Suva nightclub in April this year has been granted bail for medical reasons. Hu Jian Zhans medical report was submitted to Justice Salesi Temo when he appeared with five others - Yang Xiu Qi, Bill Hao, Liu Chuan Wei, Veng Seong Tam and Dai Jian at the High Court in Suva. The six men had been remanded in custody since April without bail. Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) lawyer Pita Bulimainavalu told the Court that investigations still continue and that substantive measures are being taken as far as disclosures are concerned. Bulimainavalu said they are also
awaiting the final post-mortem report and coloured photographs from the scene of the crime. Two of the accused have already confessed to the murder but no judgement has been made yet. DPP lawyer has also requested written confession from the two. The state requires accomplished statements by defense, Bulimainavalu said. Meanwhile, defense lawyer for Zhan who was granted bail, Samanunu Vaniqi requested Justice Temo if she could present one of her key witnesses via Skype-link since the person had returned to China. The first verdict of the hearing will be made on February 8, 2013.
The Fijian government on Thursday highlighted the importance of developing economic ties with China, thanking China for its assistance to construct a 70 kilometer road in its Northern Division to boost the local economy. Pio Tikoduadua, permanent secretary at the Prime Minister's Office, told the media that a Chinese company is expected to construct the road stretching between Nabouwalu and Dreketi in the country's north, which would be a major boost for the local economy. The remarks followed the recent signing of a major concessional loan agreement by the Exim Bank of China and the Fiji government, involving more than 200 million Fiji dollars (about $114.3 million), said Tikoduadua. After the road construction, an international port would be the next project in the pipeline for the Northern Division, he added. Permanent Secretary of Finance
Filimoni Waqabaca echoed Tikoduadua's remarks, saying Fiji was thankful to China because the loans that they have taken were on concessional rate. He said the recent visit by China's top legislator Wu Bangguo to Fiji was indicative of the growing ties as Fiji was the only country in the South Pacific to be part of his tour that included several other countries from the other parts of the world. According to Waqabaca, Wu and Fijian Prime Minister Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama signed three economic partnerships including the loan for road construction during the visit last week. Crucially, the trip showed not only economic support for the country, but also political support for Fiji's government, Waqabaca said. Fiji is the first Pacific island country to establish diplomatic relations with China. Bilateral ties have developed smoothly since the diplomatic relations were forged in 1975.
The Fiji Prisons and Corrections Service said there is no special treatment given to any inmate, including Laisenia Qarase. Spokesperson, Ana Tamani said the authority has replied to Qarase's lawyer, Tupou Draunidalo stating that all inmates are treated equally. This follows a letter written by Draunidalo to the Officer in Charge at Korovou prison soon after Qarase was sent to jail early last month that the 71
year old be transferred to an infirmary, due to his age and health condition. Tamani said there are other diabetic inmates, so no one is treated differently. Qarase was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment by High Court judge Justice Priyantha Fernando last month, after he was found guilty of six counts of abuse of office and three counts of discharging his duty with respect to property in which he had a private interest.

He made these comments while opening the India-Fiji Tourism Exchange Day at the Shangri-Las Fijian Resort & Spa. Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said Fiji was intent on carving out a bigger presence in the Indian market with new marketing strategies based on better research of what potential visitors are seeking. We already have significant relations between our countries, but there is vast potential to expand the flow of people between us and strengthen that relationship even further, he said. Comparing Indias visitor arrivals to Fiji with that from Australia, New Zealand and North America, Indian visitors visiting our shores are comparatively low. Government is optimistic that towards the year 2013, the number of visitors arriving into the country from India yearly, will increase tremendously. We are also encouraging visitors to stay longer in Fiji. We are aiming to

increase the average length of stay from the current six days to ten days by highlighting more of the extraordinary experiences Fiji has to offer, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said. With the film industry boosting the arrivals of Indians arriving into the country, Government is targeting all areas that they can strengthen in order to see an increase in numbers. This is testimony not only to our pristine beauty, but because of the Fiji Governments 47 per cent tax rebate for film production houses, which is attracting an increasing number of producers to these shores, the Minister said. This rebate is the highest offered by any country in the world. Thirty six operators from around the country were present at the ShangriLas Fijian Resort & Spa marketing their products to the 35 travel agents and travel writers from India.

Fiji's Government has apologized to an Australian woman whose father died after becoming ill on a flight out of Fiji. 73-year-old Thomas Seeto died in Nadi Hospital after receiving treatment on a flight bound for Sydney, which was forced to turn around when he became ill. Fiji's permanent secretary of Tourism, Elizabeth Powell, issued a written statement to Mr Seeto's daughter, Clarissa, extending the government's sympathy to the family. Ms Powell said in the statement that the government was "truly sorry" for what the family had had to go through. The statement added that the government was communicating with the people who came into contact with the Seeto family to find out exactly what happened. Ms Seeto told the media that there were a series of problems with her father's treatment, including lack of advertised medical care at the Raffles Hotel in Nadi, a long wait for the ambulance and mistakes with the autopsy and paperwork after Mr Seeto died. "Honestly, it was like, it was like he had no dignity," Ms Seeto said.
Ms Seeto said that after the autopsy "I realized his forehead was not put back together properly." She also said her father's name was written incorrectly on the death certificate. Ms Seeto said when they told the Australian High Commission in Suva about her father's treatment, they were not surprised. Since returning to Australia, Ms Seeto has begun a campaign to try to get the Australian Government to alert Australian tourists visiting Fiji that they could be on their own in the case of medical problems. "Fiji really boasts its tourism," Ms Seeto said. "The country's making a lot of money from tourism which is mainly from Australia. What would those tourists do if they knew what that morgue looked like or what that hospital looked like?" In an emailed response Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade says that "When travellers leave Australia they leave behind the support services they expect in Australia, underlining the need for comprehensive travel insurance.

Diwali Caution
Hindus around the country who may be wary of the Diwali celebrations falling on November 18 need not to worry, the practicing priest and astrologer of the Shree Sanatan Dharm Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji Ramesh Sharma says. According to Wikipedia, the next solar eclipse is scheduled to take place on November 13-14 from 8.56am to 11.21am, with a magnitude of 1.0500, occurring only 12 hours before perigee, with greatest eclipse totality lasting just over four minutes. Hindus believe the high intensity of the beam of the eclipse will cause serious problems to them. Mr Sharma explained part of the superstitions include those eating or drinking during the eclipse could pass abnormal cells onto their offspring and food could go bad if the beam of the eclipse falls on it. "Sanatan followers are aware of the various means of protection whenever there is an eclipse," he said. "It is our advice to them to avoid making too much sweets and food, only enough to fit the family and their guests. "And during the eclipse, they should cover the food with holy basal leaves." Mr Sharma said Diwali celebrations would continue but advised followers to be careful during the eclipse. "The celebrations will be at night so the solar eclipse will not affect much of it because it is scheduled to occur during the day." The Arya Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji also echoed the same sentiments from the Shree Sanatan Dharm Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji, saying Diwali celebrations will go on because their followers were aware of the actions to take during an eclipse. Fiji is expected to experience a partial eclipse on November 13, with a maximum of 98 per cent of the sun obscured at 9.07am at an altitude of 42 degrees.

An investigation will be conducted to determine whether or not excessive force was used during the arrest of the five prison escapees Police have confirmed their officers would be investigated if they did use excessive force. Ministry of Information permanent secretary Sharon Smith-Johns told the media that they would determine the facts of the matter before they issued a final statement. "At the moment, there has been a lot of speculation that there was excessive force used," Ms Smith-Johns said. "We need to investigate the circumstances whether excessive or reasonable force was used," she said. Amid those speculations was a posting on the popular social networking site facebook by Suva lawyer Rajendra Chaudhry who said "a friend just called to tell me that the fifth escapee, Isoa Waqa, was brought to Colonial War Memorial Hospital wrapped in a tarpaulin and with blood dripping from the tarpaulin". "We need to get rid of all speculations and investigate the fact," Ms SmithJohns said. "Police and the military used all their resources to recapture the escapees. We are in the process of investigating. The escapees were resisting arrest, they were armed," she said. When contacted, the Republic of the Fiji Military Forces preferred not to comment and referred all questions to police. Should they (activists) have any complaints, they should contact us. "People are commenting and talking a lot. But they don't know what police officers faced when they stand on the ground. The escapees resisted arrest and they were armed. Our officers were also injured during the arrest," he said. "As law enforcers, we are also subject to investigations. "We support human rights, and if we did anything wrong, we should be investigated. We are also human beings and we understand what is coming from the families and the people. They should understand that the prisoners were dangerous. "I'm telling members of the public that an investigation will be conducted on us if we had used excessive force," he added. Their case has been adjourned to October 1 for review of their health status, and the case has also been transferred to the High Court.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton, visited the University of the South Pacific's Tuvalu campus last week. The campus on Funafuti Atoll was graced by the presence of the British royals on September 18, making the Duke and Duchess the first members of the royal family to visit Tuvalu since the Queen's visit in 1982. The visit was part of the couple's last stop on their Asia-Pacific tour and was expected to draw attention to the country's rising sea level issue. The expectation was highlighted when
the couple heard a poem by a student about climate change from a youth's perspective. The campus also organized displays on climate change for the royal couple's visit. They were then presented with gifts from the school. The royal couple was received at the USP Tuvalu campus by the campus director David Manuella. "This was an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for, not only the students of the campus, but also for the people of Tuvalu to see Prince William and his wife in person," he said.

At least 60 companies have been licensed to use the Made in Fiji label. Trade permanent secretary Shaheen Ali said companies had started using the label. While the ministry is continuing its promotion, Mr Ali said work was also ongoing with companies who had been licensed on keeping the standards and quality of their products. "So, when people see the Fijian Made logo, they associate that with the highest quality and their price effectiveness," Mr Ali said. "At the moment, it is just a domestic campaign. We want to take it a step further and encourage our overseas
markets to buy as well. "I think this campaign will in future assist the country in terms of building up its balance of payments. It will be a national and international marketing strategy and we are grateful for the government for giving the resources since the launch of the brand. "And we are at the moment coming up with a three-year plan that will look at the sustainability of the campaign." Mr Ali said they were also looking into the small and micro enterprises as well as the handicraft industry for the use of logo. "It's a cross section of companies we are wanting to help," he added.
It is vital that Fiji students understand the importance of Fiji Day, says the Permanent Secretary for Education, Dr Brij Lal. Students must be taught to take pride in their country. They should have love for their culture, dream great things for the development of its land and people. Most importantly they should be able to contribute for the betterment of Fiji, he stated as his ministry prepares the groundwork for school celebrations on October 10. Schools may participate in the
Fiji Day celebration in their cities, towns and districts. Head teachers and principals are to see that proper arrangements are made for students participation since the celebration falls on Wednesday. He said schools in rural areas and outer islands would also mark the day. For the island schools and those in the remote and rural areas, celebrations are to be done in your respective school premises. Activities are to be organized well, so students may understand the importance of Fiji Day, he said.

Fijis report on progress towards democracy and reforms has been well received by the ACP-EU Joint parliamentary assembly. This follows a report by the joint ACP & EU fact finding mission that visited Fiji this year to assess the reforms currently being implemented by Government. Responding to the report, the Bureau of the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary expressed satisfaction with the missions observations and recommendations. The report acknowledges that the process for the restoration of democracy depends on the people of Fiji themselves, according to their own social, economic and political priorities. The Bureau had met in Brussels this month to deliberate on the report which also looked at the progress made by authorities to return the country to
constitutional order and parliamentary democracy. The Bureau remained confident that the Fijian people can find solutions to the political issues that confront them and build a better society for present and future generations. Fijis Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ratu Inoke Kubuabola said the report acknowledges the work undertaken by Government to move the country towards elections in 2014. The access channel from Nadi Bay into the area designated as the Port Fantasy Marina has now been completed. Dredging has been underway for the last five weeks to open the already completed channel to Nadi Bay and to dredge eight hundred meters out into the Bay to provide a channel with sufficient depth for most vessels to use at all tides. The channel is eighty meters wide for the entire length and has a minimum depth at low tide of two and a half meters (at high tide it is in excess of four and a half meters) As well as providing direct access for the Port Fantasy Marina to the Bay, the breakthrough also allows access for all of the internal channels in the development, for most vessels, at all tides. This means that property owners in the Fantasy Island development can now have twenty-four hour access from the pontoon at the end of their garden to the Nadi Bay area. The Fantasy Island Development is the largest canal development in Fiji and the network of deep canals that radiate off the main entrance channel make unhindered access easy. The Fantasy Island project lies between two other major Nadi Bay developments, Denarau and Naisoso Island. The Fantasy Resort development is situated close to Nadi Town and a short drive from Denarau Island and is at the heart of the fast growing tourism area. The planned Nadi Bypass Road will make the travelling time to Nadi and Denarau even faster. Abbas Ali, Managing Director for the development says We started the project in 1990 with a clear vision of what we wanted to achieve, using the economically unproductive swampland. What we have achieved far exceeds our wildest dreams, and is a land development of which we are very proud. The location can never again be matched, especially the proximity to Nadi Town, while still enjoying the quite of the rural surroundings. NETWORK The canal network also makes each of
the residential lots in the development very private as the site opens out onto the water with houses on the other side of the canal a considerable distance away. The canals give an added sense of space and provide interesting vistas and potentially good fishing right from your own backyard. The port Fantasy Marina project at the other end of the main channel will provide a significant commercial port, boat yard, fishermans port and marine facilities within the complex. Plans are completed for the Port and the Marina complex. The two storey passenger terminal will be built on an acre and a half of land fronting the main harbor area. The terminal building has a ground floor of over three thousand square meters with the upper floor a little more than half that size. In addition to the terminal space the facility will house rental offices, shops and a restaurant and the upper floor will house an international standard nightclub, restaurant and bar. The terminal will have magnificent views of Nadi Bay. The main access channel from Nadi Bay to the Terminal is eighty meters wide, six hundred meters long and has a maximum depth at high tide of four and a half meters for the full length. There will be a full range of services in the marina including water, power, sewer, and a fuel depot. The harbour will have both pontoon moorings and swing moorings. The total water area of the harbour is five acres with the surrounding canals adding a further five acres of water. The entire port area is designated as a commercial port catering to tourist transportation by boat and other water based sporting activities related to tourism. It is also expected that a significant number of private vessels will use the moorings. Behind the large commercial marina is a fishermans port for the use of local fishermen, who are engaged in the industry as a livelihood and it will fill a much needed function as
there is currently no place for these hard working people to conduct their business. The area will include a cold storage complex, ice making equipment, fuelling services, an easily accessible boat storage yard and a workshop for repairs as well as adequate and safe jetty space. For bigger vessels there will be a storage and repair yard which will house services such as mechanical repairs and maintenance facilities. The rest of the ten acres of land on which the port facilities will be built is designated as commercial. There are twenty-eight commercial lots sub-divided into separate titles ranging in size from one thousand five hundred square meters to eight hundred square meters. Depending on size and location the lots are priced from $175,000 to $350,000 plus VAT. The cost estimates in place are that the construction of stage one will cost $3.5 million for the marina and facilities such as the terminal building will cost an additional $3.0 million. STAGE FOUR UNDERWAY With the completion of the access channel, the work on the final stage of the Fantasy island development, Stage Four, has started. This stage features a large hotel/resort site, a long stretch of beach front on Nadi Bay and an enclosed and very well protected inner beach area. There are also two large lakes of sea water. All the villa sites in this stage have direct water access, most of them beachfront. The hotel resort is planned as a full five star facility with its own private beach. The resort will add significant value to the whole development. Completion date for Stage Four is to be December 2013. Already the rock foundations for the perimeter walls are being put in place and these will be faced with local rock as erosion protection. The final dredging of all the internal canals will then take place and the calcite sand reclaimed during this operation will be placed inside the wall structures to lift the land to the designated levels. Sales are proceeding in the other stages of the development. STAGE ONE SOLD All of Stage One has been sold and Stages Two and Three are moving forward well. The main access road is currently being upgraded by the Roads Authority, with forming and drainage well advanced. The upgrade of this road will make access to the development fast and easy. Several other projects within the Fantasy area are also proceeding to plan and the infrastructure is growing. A number of new private residential buildings are in the planning stages or work has started and the permanent population of the Fantasy Island is growing.

The excitement and hype surrounding the progress and development of the $30million Damodar City went up a notch after Superdrug Pharmacy Laucala joined the list of tenants to occupy the multiplex cinema complex. Prabhay Nand, the young entrepreneur who owns the soon-to-be-opened pharmacy, signed the deal alongside Damodar Brothers (Films) Limited chief executive officer Div Damodar at Nand's Mall in Suva. "It's going to be innovative, customer focused, new and fresh something Fiji hasn't seen before," said Mr Nand, adding it would also serve as a gift shop with a variety of items for all customers. "I think it's about time Fiji has something like this that will lift the standard of pharmacy all over the country.
"At the moment, we're looking at (employing) two full-time pharmacists. I'd say almost 10 full time employees. "This will be the third Superdrug pharmacy to open (in the Central Division) and should be a cut above the rest. I'm looking forward to getting it all done. Hopefully we can open by Christmas." Meanwhile, complex manager Carmelita Price revealed they had reached 75 per cent of total occupancy. While details of the rent costs are kept confidential as part of their agreement with tenants, Ms Price said rent would depend on the size or space occupied and location of tenancy. Ms Price said tenants would be allowed to operate as soon as their internal set up was complete but this would not necessarily mean the formal opening of the Damodar complex.
Labasa's first-ever shopping mall with a total of 10 shops to operate under one complex is now open. The family-owned business known as the "Northwinds Plaza" cost Paul Jaduram Investment Limited close to $1million. Company managing director Paul Jaduram said the shops are now open for business operations but the official launch of the mall would be organised at a later date. "This is a double-storey complex and the Centre Point Hotel is situated on the upper floor with 12 rooms while the shops are based on the ground floor," Mr Jaduram said. "We spent about $200,000 for renovation works before the shops were rented out
to interested business bodies. "Such investments will not only rake in a lot of money for the northern economy but also give an opportunity for people to trade in different shops under one roof," he said. Mr Jaduram said they had their sights on other major investments to boost their business operations. "This is a major transition for the people of Vanua Levu because it's going to be the first of its kind to be based on the main street," he said. Some shops at the complex include Rachael's Coffee Shop, Shoes and Sports, Praveen's Hair Salon, Enjoy Restaurants, Remix Clothing and Exotic Electro Movie World.
The Coral Coast Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association has joined the advent of information technology by recently launching their new website which allows local and overseas guests to view the best in tourism along the Coral Coast. The joint initiative with a cohesive approach towards boosting our tourism industry took 30 days to set up even though the initial idea started three years ago when operators along the Coral Coast came up with the idea to promote, develop and establish their side of town as a premier holiday destination. Association chairman Peter Hopgood said the new website (coralcoastfiji.
org) promoted three elements abundant in supply along the Coral Coast tradition, culture and nature. "In the past, the resorts (Coral Coast) worked individually to promote their specific product in the region. The hotels were never united in their promotion of this beautiful destination," he said. "Our goal is to make Fiji the preferred destination for travellers from Australia and New Zealand then they choose the Coral Coast as the preferred region then we will fight over where they stay. "The operators on the Coral Coast are very happy with the direction that Tourism Fiji is going in promoting the destination."

Prominent local writer, Amitesh Deo who is the author of the book titled Amma: A frail wooden door today donated three autographed copies of the book to the Fiji Museum. Speaking to the media, Deo said the book was a way to voice out the traumas he faced while growing up and that he wished that this ugliness of life should not be experienced by any child. I am honoured and privileged to be able to contribute towards the fight against child abuse because children nowadays are more vulnerable to it than ever before by their parents and relatives, Deo said. More than 2000 copies of his book
are in circulation in Fiji and abroad and close to five hundred have been requested from the printers. Deo has also made his submission to the Constitution Commission in regards to child abuse in Fiji. Meanwhile, his mother Pushpa Wati said that Deo has always made him proud. He had always struggled to achieve his goals. He managed to in the end even though his schooling days were a struggle, his mother said. Deo is set to launch his second book in a few months time which is a humor book but like his first book, also portray messages about child abuse.
Heated discussion erupted over plans to charge a toll to fund a new bridge to the tourism island of Denarau, Nadi. Stakeholders of Denarau Island were being briefed on the progress on a needed new bridge following problems with the current bridge. The existing bridge which allows access to Denaraus popular resorts, shopping centre and port, and many other facilities was built more than 40 years ago. Denarau Corporation Limited board member Bob Lyons addressed the stakeholders at Denarau. He informed them that Government has agreed, in principle, to loan the corporation $8 million for the construction of the new bridge. He said that in order to pay off the loan, a toll would be imposed on the bridge for every vehicle entering Denarau Islands. Mr Lyons said the toll would be placed on entry into Denarau for an indefinite period. Once the Government loan is paid off, money raised from the toll would go towards the maintenance of roads in Denarau Island. He added that this would result in reduction of rates and capital expenditure for properties and other operators who operate out of Denarau Island. Mr Lyons said as a board member, he supported the toll idea, adding that they would then have a monopoly over the bridge and would be able to make money off it. The call for toll to be imposed was widely criticized at the meeting and many present raised questions regarding the validity of imposing tolls. Port Denarau Retail and Commercial Centre general manager Aysha Koya said they totally opposed the toll. During off peak seasons, people coming into the Island are mostly locals and this toll will not encourage
anybody to come into Port Denarau to shop and eat, she said. The director of Tradewinds Marine Limited John Philp said Government needed to pay for the construction of the new bridge. Mr Philp said: All the tolls that you come across in overseas is only acceptable by ratepayers because they have a choice of either paying toll and saving time or using a longer means. This is a monopoly which is ridiculous. He stressed that Government should be approached again with a new proposal to fund the construction of the new bridge, as some 40 per cent of tourism revenue is generated from Denarau Island. Mr Philp also suggested that the existing bridge be repaired and the Corporation wait till 2014 for the next Government and approach them again with a proposal to fund the construction of the bridge. The structural engineers commissioned by the Corporation to assess the existing bridge, Houng Lee Kaba (hlk) Jacob Limited informed the stakeholders that they would not be able to give a definite time till when the existing bridge will last. Ravindra Pillay said the tonnage over the bridge needed to be monitored. But he said he could not give a definite answer as to how long the existing bridge would last or how soon a new one needed to be built. A new bridge would take at least 12 to 16 months to construct, the meeting heard. The $8 million interest-free loan agreed to by the Government in principle is yet to be signed. Also, tenders for construction of the new bridge are to be called to see the best available option. Tenders are expected to be called and finalised in December and construction of the new bridge is likely to commence in January.

Students of AD Patel College in Ba collected over 100 garbage bags full of rubbish when they took part in the Go Green clean-up campaign. The school first took part in the Bank of South Pacific initiative last year and was excited to join the environmental cause this time around. "The students were excited. It wasn't just a time for us to come together and bond as a school but also to promote a cause that we know is worthy for our generation and the generations to come," said teacher Samlesh Chand. Over 100 students from Forms Three to Five took part in the hour-long

"Prior to this, we had students in the Duke of Edinburgh program and scouts in the school clean-up of the Mission Hospital in Ba Town. "Even before and after the Go Green clean-up campaign, our school is committed to its environmental role of cleaning our surroundings," he said. AD Patel College was one of over 70 schools that had registered with BSP for the environmentally-friendly campaign.

from "across-the-board reductions in air travel spending, including restrictions on business class flights". Some $2 million will be recovered through more online advertising for staff. Senator Wong said this would recognise "that more people are now looking for jobs on the internet". Printing costs will be reduced by five per cent for a $6 million saving from a "greater reliance on publishing online only". Senator Wong said the aim was to put more department publications online. "We are starting with a small amount of the total budget there and we will look to build that over time as we can try and move more of the Government's publications online," she said. The use of consultants will be reduced to save $60 million in this financial year alone. "Labor target efficiencies; the Coalition slashes jobs", Senator Wong told reporters.

PUBLIC servants were told to communicate and advertise online, rather than on paper, and fly at the back of the plane, not in business class. These moves, including a ban on some international travel, are part of a $550 million Government spending attack over the next four years. The Government is desperate to show it can prune spending on the bureaucracy without sacking public servants as it battles to deliver on its promise of a Budget surplus in 2012-13. It has been highly critical of public service retrenchments by Liberal premiers in Queensland and NSW. Government forced to rewrite budget But it needs to recover close to $40 billion in spending to rescue the current Budget and meet its target, with an inter mid-year economic and fiscal outlook to be released late in the year. Finance Minister Penny Wong said $550 million would be saved through efficiencies with $30 million to come
"We're talking about somebody who's a mastermind of the scam, maybe someone from Europe or the US or the UK," he said. "They will go down to the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, and they will set up what's called a boiler room, effectively a small call centre. "Through Facebook or Twitter they'll attract English-speaking people from the local area who have good American accents, good UK accents, to make it sound more authentic when they call you and try and take your money from you." Mr Day says fraudsters still use the simple phone call to your home to try to rope people in, but are now also capitalising on social media. "These guys do a really good number in putting together very sophisticated, very professional-looking websites," he said. "They'll also use web technology to create reviews of their services so that when you do a Google search for the name of their fictitious company that will turn up higher on the searches probably than our searches sometimes. "They'll also use other web technology to create other websites say from fictitious foreign regulators that they say they're licensed by as well." Background checks Mr Day says even though consumers
do background checks, the fraudsters can still make their telephone numbers look as though they are local and authentic. "They'll give you a number that's effectively a 1300 or an 1800 number here in Australia, which will transfer to their call centre somewhere in Asia," he said. "You honestly might think that you're ringing the US, you may think that you're ringing Queensland or South Australia, but the reality is you know you're ringing that call centre. "They've got very good scripts in terms of keeping you on the hook, keeping you investing, keeping you placated in terms of any scrutiny or any curiosity you may have about their authenticity or not." Mr Day says the bogus operators are also prepared in the event you want to speak to their supervisor. "If you want to speak to the supervisor, they'll have escalated scripts, so someone will play the role of the supervisor. "They'll start other efforts to authenticate themselves, so they'll send you emails with fictitious balance sheets of how well your investments are going. "They'll send you good news emails saying the price of the share has doubled would you like to put more in."
A week-old giant panda cub has died at Washington DC's National Zoo, with the cause of its death not immediately apparent. Zoo staff was alerted to the cub's plight after its mother, Mei Xiang, was heard making sounds of distress. The tiny cub was removed from the panda enclosure but attempts to revive it proved unsuccessful. The zoo said the cub weighed just under 100g (3.5oz), and that there were no obvious signs of injury or infection. In a statement, the zoo said: "We are broken-hearted to share that we have lost our little giant panda cub. "Panda keepers and volunteers heard
Mei Xiang make a distress vocalisation at 09:17 (13:17 GMT) and let the veterinarian staff know immediately. "They... were able to safely retrieve the cub for an evaluation at 10:22, which we only do in situations of gravest concern. "The veterinarians immediately performed CPR and other life-saving measures, but sadly the cub was unresponsive." Fourteen-year-old Mei Xiang had five failed pregnancies before giving birth to the cub, which was conceived by artificial insemination after she and the zoo's male, Tian Tian, failed to mate. Only one panda cub has survived at the zoo in the past.
America's sixth-largest credit card issuer has agreed to pay $200m (123m) in refunds to settle accusations it misled customers into add-on services. Discover Bank will also pay a $14m fine, after regulators said it enrolled clients in schemes such as credit monitoring, without consent. It is the third public enforcement action taken by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). More than 3.5 million customers are to receive refunds. About two million of them will be repaid all the charges against them. Those incorrectly charged for the addon services between December 2007 and August 2011 are to be repaid for at least 90 days worth of fees. The investigation found "Discover's telemarketing scripts contained many misrepresentations, implying that

these products were free of charge and simply 'added benefits'," CFPB director Richard Cordray told reporters. Regulators also found in some cases that telemarketers had been paid incentives to enroll customers in the add-on products, Mr Cordray added. As part of the settlement, Discover agreed to change its telemarketing approach and employ an independent auditor. In a statement from its parent company, Discover Financial Services chairman and chief executive David Nelms said the company had "worked hard to earn the loyalty of our card members, and we are committed to marketing our products responsibly". The CFPB was created in 2010 to protect consumers from hidden fees. Its first enforcement action was a $210m settlement with Capital One Financial in July.

Clinton Hints At Possible Hillary Marines Face Court Martial Over White House Bid Corpse Urination
Two US Marines will face trial by courts martial for urinating on the bodies of dead Taliban fighters in Afghanistan and posing for photographs with them, the Pentagon says. The charges against staff sergeants Joseph Chamblin and Edward Deptola come a month after three other Marines were sanctioned administratively for their role in the July 2011 incident in Helmand province. A videotape that surfaced on the internet in January showed four US troops urinating on three bloodied corpses and one of the men, apparently aware he was being filmed, saying: "Have a great day, buddy," to one of the dead. The Pentagon says charges against the sergeants concern "violations of the Uniform Code of Military Justice for their involvement in urinating on deceased Taliban fighters and for posing for unofficial photographs with human casualties". They also are charged with dereliction of duty for a number of other command failures involving younger Marines.

The actions depicted in the video took place during a counter-insurgency operation in the restive Musa Qala district of Helmand province. The video caused great embarrassment to the US military and prompted a Naval Criminal Investigative Service investigation as well as condemnation and an apology from defense secretary Leon Panetta. The three US Marines who received administrative punishment last month over the urination incident in Afghanistan pleaded guilty. Punishment from administrative proceedings - as opposed to courts martial - can include reduction in rank, restriction to a military base, extra duties, and forfeiture of pay, a reprimand or a combination of such measures.

disclosing why he stepped down. This was a completely unexpected event. This is not the sort of thing that anyone can anticipate, Clark said at a news conference Monday. I learned about it a couple of weeks ago and that is when the investigation began. But according to sources, the incident occurred Sept. 7, after many Liberal government politicians and staff members had participated at a golf tournament at the Metchosin Golf and Country Club just west of Victoria, to raise money for the B.C. Liberal party. By tradition, media were also present, but the event is considered off-therecord, to allow politicians and reporters to socialize freely. However, one source said Boessenkool and others later moved the party to a pub a few blocks away from the Legislature. Details of the incident are uncertain, but shortly thereafter the Premiers office began an investigation of Boessenkools conduct at the pub. When the investigation was complete, the Premier met with Boessenkool. She said they both agreed he needed to resign, which he did. Clark refused to comment on whether the incident involved a political staffer or whether Boessenkool was accused of groping a woman. She indicated the incident was not criminal in nature. The long wait for Justin Trudeau's difficult decision appears to be over: Radio-Canada is reporting that the Quebec MP and son of former prime minister Pierre Trudeau will announce early next week that he will run for the leadership of the federal Liberal Party. Trudeau is expected to make the announcement at a news conference in his Montreal riding of Papineau on Tuesday. Throughout the summer, Trudeau was non-committal when pressed about a potential run for the party's top job, citing his desire to spend more time with his children. Two weeks ago, a leadership bid looked more plausible when rumours flared that Trudeau was ready to put his name in the ring. A new Liberal leader will be chosen in April, after Michael Ignatieff resigned in the wake of the partys disastrous showing in the last federal election. Bob Rae, the interim Liberal leader, has already announced he wont run. Other leadership hopefuls As for Trudeau's potential challengers, there's already talk that the party is putting pressure on Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney to run for the job. Last April, Carney said in a television interview that he was not contemplating political life and was "absolutely focused" on his current job. Toronto lawyer Deborah Coyne and Manitoba paramedic Shane Geschiere have announced they're interested in the leadership. Coyne is the mother of Justin Trudeau's half-sister, Sarah. MPs Marc Garneau and Dominic LeBlanc are known to have leadership ambitions, but will have to evaluate their chances now that Trudeau is

But Toronto MP Judy Sgro said it wasn't a foregone conclusion Trudeau will win. "There are several very interesting people that are going to be running," Sgro said. "He's a young man. He's got lots to learn just as you do and I do." New rules and format for race Another Montreal MP, former cabinet minister Denis Coderre, wouldn't rule out his own leadership ambitions, but said Trudeau adds a "dose of dynamism" to the race. He said he doesn't think Trudeau's candidacy will discourage other candidates from running. "We need to have a real campaign this time, not a coronation," Coderre said. "I think we're going to have a very strong number of serious people," said the Liberals' deputy leader Ralph Goodale. Liberals announced the rules governing the leadership race earlier this month, including strict spending and debt limits. Several candidates from the 2006 Liberal leadership race are still struggling to pay off their debts. The next Liberal leader will not be chosen by delegates at a convention. For the first time, not only cardcarrying party members, but also a new category of party "supporters" will cast votes. The party hopes the change in format will inject new enthusiasm and strength into the party, now in third place in the House of Commons.

Jason Kenney's office says email sent to people who had written to immigration minister
People who received emails from Immigration Minister Jason Kenney's MP office are asking how Kenney or his staff knew about the recipients' sexual orientation or interest in lesbian and gay issues. continue to welcome those fleeing persecution, which oftentimes includes certain death, including on the basis of sexual orientation. We are proud of the emphasis our Conservative Government has placed on gay and lesbian refugee protection, which is without precedent in Canada's immigration history. We have increased the resettlement of gay refugees living abroad as part of our refugee programs. In particular, we have taken the lead in helping gay refugees who have fled often violent persecution in Iran to begin new, safe lives in Canada. We are also helping community groups like the Rainbow Refugee Committee to sponsor gay refugees for resettlement to Canada. Please click on the web-links below for more information. I would appreciate hearing your thoughts. Sincerely, Hon. Jason Kenney, PC, MP Calgary Southeast www.JasonKenney.ca "This is scary. This is actually really scary," Green said. "I wasn't just disturbed, I was frightened, because they're clearly stockpiling lists of particular constituencies of Canadians, for their propaganda." Green, who is a health researcher, is also upset that the government is trying to "pinkwash" its activities making them sound more gay and lesbian friendly than they really are. She points to Kenney's recent cuts to refugee health programs, which she says have taken a direct toll on LGBT refugees who often need trauma counselling and basic medical care. Several other Canadians also expressed anger about Kenney's missive on social media sites like Facebook. Privacy concerns over personal data collection Randall Garrison, the NDP critic for LGBT issues, told reporters after Monday's question period that if a clear explanation doesn't come from Kenney's office, his party may make a formal complaint with federal Privacy Commissioner Jennifer Stoddart. "I think there's a serious privacy question here when the minister is obviously touching on a subject that's very sensitive to many people and connecting up sexual orientation with individual names and addresses," Garrison said. "I think we need a full explanation of how he put together that list." Political parties fall outside the privacy laws, yet they amass huge amounts of highly personal information about citizens, including how they vote, their age, religious and ethnic backgrounds, and other details. Stoddart has warned that Canadians have no legal rights when it comes to personal information collected by parties and held in databases for partisan use. A spokesperson for the privacy commissioner's office calls the case "troubling," but added there is little they can do. "Please note that, from the information

For Women

Regardless of your hairs texture, the use of a hair mask will always benefit your beauty regimen. There are many hair masks and conditioners out in the market right now, each catering to different hair types. But did you know that the less chemicals you put in your hair, the better the results will be? Many women prefer to use natural hair masks those made from ingredients found in their own kitchens. Here are some ideas for do-it-yourself natural hair masks that are tailored for your hair type. 1. Dry, Unmanageable Hair If you have dry, damaged hair, this can be caused by several salon treatments, or frequent exposure to the sun. Whichever the cause, dry hair makes your hair frizzy and unmanageable. To get back that healthy sheen, egg-based hair masks are highly recommended. Eggs are high in protein, and these proteins are the best strengthener for your hair follicles. Beat two eggs together and add four tablespoons of olive oil. Massage this through your hair. Cover your head in plastic wrap, and leave the mixture on for 15 minutes. Remove the plastic wrap and wash your hair with regular shampoo. Do this 2-3 times a week to regain your hairs healthy shine. 2. Anti-Frizz Hair Mask Healthy curls are gorgeous, but not if they come with a big frizz-control problem. For curly hair that needs a little taming, honey-based hair masks are your best bet. Just mix together a tablespoon of pure honey in a liter of water. After shampooing, apply the honey-water mixture on your hair. Do this a couple of times per week, and the result is
sexy, bouncy curls without the frizz. 3. Dandruff Control Especially during the dry season, dandruff can be quite a problem. Not only is the itchiness inconvenient and uncomfortable, but dandruff is also an embarrassing problem. To treat dandruff, you should keep your scalp moisturized. One of the best ways to do this is using an olive oil treatment. Mix together equal amounts of olive oil and almond oil. Massage this mixture through your hair and scalp, and leave it on for 15 minutes. Rinse your hair thoroughly. Repeat this treatment regularly to eliminate dandruff problems. 4. For Oily Hair If your hair is always oily and greasy, it lacks the proper nutrients to maintain the right pH balance. A yogurt hair mask is very effective in restoring this balance. Simply mix together a cup of yogurt and a whole egg. After shampooing, apply this mixture on your hair and leave on for about 15 minutes. Rinse your hair thoroughly. Using this yogurt mask once in a while will prevent your hair from getting oily quickly. 5. Hair Mask for Hair Loss Hair loss is a common problem that women face. It could be due to stress, weather, genetics, and a lot of other external factors. With the right hair mask regimen, you will be able to minimize the problem of hair loss. Mix together an egg yolk, one tablespoon of honey, and one tablespoon of peach or cabbage juice. Massage this mixture into your hair, and leave in for about 2 hours. After that, rinse out the mixture with lukewarm water. This will help strengthen your hair, thus preventing extreme hair loss.

Healthy Eating
What about medication? High blood pressure affects approximately a quarter of Canadian adults. Many people require medication to control their blood pressure. Lifestyle modification, which includes healthy eating and regular physical activity, may be the only treatment needed in those with mild high blood pressure. In those that require medication to control their blood pressure, following a healthy lifestyle may reduce the need for, or the amount of, medication required. What next? A full healthy lifestyle, including healthy eating, is part of the Canadian recommendations for the management of high blood pressure. The Heart and Stroke Foundation is involved in developing blood pressure guidelines, which are updated every year. To control your blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease, the guidelines recommend that you: Be active 30 to 60 minutes most days of the week. Choose the following more often: vegetables, fruit, low-fat dairy products, foods low in saturated and trans fat and salt, whole grains and fish, poultry and lean meat. Limit fast foods, canned or prepared foods, as they usually contain high levels of sodium. If you are overweight, losing about 10 lb (5 kg) will lower your blood pressure. Reducing your weight to within a healthy range for your age and gender will lower your blood pressure even more. Eat less salt by: limiting your use of salt in cooking and at the table avoiding salty foods choosing fresh or frozen food avoiding canned or prepared foods that are high in salt reading the Nutrition Facts table on food packages for sodium content using other seasonings such as herbs, spices, lemon juice and garlic during food preparation If you drink alcohol, limit yourself to no more than 2 drinks a day, to a weekly maximum of 10 for women and 3 drinks a day to a weekly maximum of 15 for men. (Do not drink when you are driving a vehicle, taking medications or other drugs that interact with alcohol, pregnant or are planning to be pregnant, making important decisions, doing any kind of dangerous physical activity, living with alcohol dependence or mental or physical health problems, or responsible for the safety of others. If you are concerned about how drinking may affect your health, talk to your doctor.) Be smoke-free. It is important to stop smoking if you have high blood pressure. Smoking increases the risk of developing heart problems and other diseases. Your home and workplace should also be smoke-free. Take your medication as prescribed. Monitor your blood pressure regularly. Changing your diet means a life-long commitment to healthier lifestyle choices. People who make small changes in their diet over a longer period of time, rather than a dramatic change all at once, are more likely to stay committed to a healthier diet. If you are considering starting on the DASH diet, discuss it with your healthcare provider first. How much salt? The Heart and Stroke Foundation recommends Canadians consume no more than 2,300 mg of sodium (about 1 teaspoon/5 mL of table salt) a day in food preparation and at the table. The amount of salt you eat isnt just what you shake onto your food it is already added in large quantities to prepared foods, canned products, snack foods and restaurant meals. To more information about Canada's Food Guide, go to Health Canada's website or call Health Canada at 1-800-O-Canada (1 800 622-6232) or TTY: 1 800 926-9105. Easy ways to get started on the DASH diet Change gradually If you now eat one or two vegetables a day, add another serving at lunch and dinner. If you dont eat fruit now or have only juice at breakfast, add a serving to your meals or have it as a snack. Treat meat as one part of the whole meal, instead of the main focus. Limit meat and alternatives to about 6 oz (170 g) a day, over two meals (two servings). Each serving is about the size of a deck of cards or the palm of your hand. Choose fruit or low-fat foods as desserts and snacks. Fruit and low-fat foods offer great taste and variety. Fresh fruit require little or no preparation. Dried fruit is easy to carry with you. Eating out Canadians, it seems, love to eat out often. By making wise choices, you may not only treat yourself to some special dishes, but you also ensure that your restaurant meals fit into your overall heart-healthy eating plan. When eating out, you're still in charge of what you eat even though you're not doing the cooking. More and more restaurants today are happy to accommodate individual preferences, so feel free to ask questions about how a dish is cooked or to make requests, such as asking for salad dressing on the side or having a baked potato instead of French fries. (You'll still want to avoid loading up your potato with sour cream, butter and bacon bits.) A steady diet of excess fat, calories and salt may increase your risk of heart disease and stroke. Many restaurant chains now post nutrition information on menus or on their websites consistent with the Nutrition Facts table on packaged foods. Restaurants that are part of the Health Check program offer menu items that meet specific nutrient criteria developed by the Foundations registered dietitians. The items that meet the Health Check criteria are easily identified on the menu with the Health Check logo. For more information, go to healthcheck.org. Appetizers If you're going out for dinner, make sure you eat lunch or you may be too hungry to make healthy choices. At the restaurant, opt for a whole-grain offering from the breadbasket as opposed to higher-fat, buttery garlic bread. Appetizers tend to be very high in fat and calories, so choose a vegetable-based soup or a dark, leafy green salad with dressing on the side, instead of the deep-fried calamari or the creamy crab dip. Heart-healthy choices When you see the words baked, barbecued, broiled, charbroiled, grilled, poached, roasted, steamed or stir-fried, it most likely means the food is cooked with little or no fat and therefore a healthy choice. Take a pass When you see the words Alfredo sauce, au gratin, cheese sauce, battered, breaded, buttered, creamed, crispy, deep-fried, en croute, fried, hollandaise, pan-fried, pastry, prime, rich, sauteed, scalloped, gravy, mayonnaise, thick sauce, it usually means that the food is higher in fat and calories. Similarly, foods that are pickled, smoked, or are served with soy sauce mean that the food is higher in sodium. (Ask for sodium-reduced soy sauce.) Portion sizes Portion sizes in restaurants are often large, so share or take half of your meal home for tomorrows lunch or dinner. Read more about Canadas Food Guide recommended portion sizes. Desserts Keep dessert light and simple, such as fresh fruit with sherbet. If you can't resist a rich dessert, indulge occasionally or share it with your tablemates. Dietary fats, oils and cholesterol You need a small amount of fat in your diet for healthy functioning. Oils and fats supply calories and essential fats and help your body absorb fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E and K. The type of fat consumed is as important for health as the total amount consumed. That's why it's important to choose healthier unsaturated fats. Eating too much and the wrong kinds of fats, such as saturated and trans fats, may raise unhealthy LDL cholesterol and lower healthy HDL cholesterol. This imbalance can increase your risk of high blood pressure, narrowing of the arteries (atherosclerosis), heart attack and stroke. Canada's Food Guide recommends that you include a small amount 30 to 45 mL (2 to 3 tablespoons) of unsaturated fat each day (also known as mono- and polyunsaturated fat). Make sure the oil you use in cooking, salad dressings, soft non-hydrogenated margarine and mayonnaise contain mono- and polyunsaturated fats such as olive, soybean, canola or peanut oils. Get the facts about margarine and butter. Monounsaturated fats These have been shown to improve blood cholesterol levels. They're found in olive oil, canola oil, peanut oil, nonhydrogenated margarine, avocados and some nuts such as almonds, pistachios, cashews, pecans and hazelnuts.

I didn't earn much for several years, but I always managed to put money away. The big thing to remember is how much you have going out vs. how much is coming in, and not to live beyond your means. The big thing for me was to separate my needs from wants. When my friends were buying rims and stereo systems for their cars, I was maxing out a Roth IRA. The same thing goes for clothes, entertainment, etc. Have nice clothes for work, a dependable car, a have a good time, but don't go overboard. The ideas for earning side income were also good. Keep your eyes open for opportunities! :) And finally, the advice ended with the long (17 suggestions!) but wellthought-out and valuable comment that follows: 1) Housing is the biggest cost; share your rental house/apartment with one or more roommates. The money they contribute to your housing costs can be saved for an emergency fund. My husband and I did this while we were graduate students and while there is a decrease in privacy, you don't have to allocate such a large portion of your income to housing costs. 2) Buy everything second hand. Everything. Furniture, clothes, shoes, cooking utensils. Thrift stores are utilized more heavily now than when we were students but it is still possible to get stuff that you can wear, use and sit on. Try and get family to give you their old, extra pieces of furniture for free. Don't bother to buy any nice furniture until you have assets. Don't buy too much furniture until you have your own house; you'll just end up selling the stuff or lugging it all to the new place. 3) Save 25% of your income. It can be done. You won't be going to bars on a regular basis but if you learn to cook, BBQ and have pot luck social affairs, you can decrease your entertainment and food costs which if I remember my student days, were fairly high. Start small, and move up to the 25%
amount. Place this money in your RRSP (retirement funds) or another account that you cannot access easily and forget about it. Pretend it doesn't exist and you won't be tempted to pillage it. I did this while I was a twenty something and the money I saved in the forgotten account became my 50% down payment on my first house. 4) Don't follow the crowd. Don't spend like the crowd and don't take on debt like the crowd. The only debt that makes sense is a house mortgage but only after you have a 25% down payment, are committed to living in the house buying area for a decade and that you aggressively pay off within ten years. Debt is a waste of your income and should be viewed as EVIL. The current practice of taking on debt to fuel investment is sustainable only if the current bubble market in real estate persists and you are able to off load a hefty house mortgage onto someone else in the future at a profit. Otherwise, I don't see houses as investments: they are simply a place to live in and a liability if you don't have cash funds available to pay them off fast. 5) Don't shop for recreation. You just accumulate stuff. It is far more useful to shop for continuing education or other assets such as a rental property. Spend the money you would on Walmart junk on more education. Or travel experiences. Or real life experiences. Buying stuff is not a useful way to invest your income. 6) To build up a cash position quickly, get a second job for a certain period of time. Work in retail or sales on weekends. Just get some money in and stash it. 7) It is not that difficult to save money if you are determined. If you don't have the determination, no one can give you the right set of tips to get you to save. You have to decide to "just do it". 8) Don't drive a brand new car. If you can get a decent second hand car and check insurance rates. Try to use the public transit system as much as you can.
9) Don't think deprivation; think control. By saving money, you are being wise with your resources. Every time you look around and see your savings flushing money down the toilet, think assets not depreciating product purchases. It is possible to have a happy life without buying a lot of stuff, working yourself to death and following the scripts of our upbringing. Money is important but it isn't as important as life. 10) We use our credit card (one) to buy all our groceries, non-food purchases and gasoline for our car; we get PC points back that we use for decreasing our food bill. But we don't carry a balance. We have money in the bank before we charge anything. With large purchases (over $200) we wait for at least a month before we decided to buy and only when we have researched the product. We only buy a product if we can't get it secondhand or if it is a computer related product. We never carry a credit card balance and paying interest is simply a poor use of our limited resources. For high end product purchases - such as a new home purchase, take your time before you buy. We waited five years. Yes, we paid more for our house but we got the house we wanted in the area we wanted. Could we have bought a starter house and then resold and made money and bought the second house? Yes. But we were saddled with debt from student loans, a rental house mortgage and my husband was just starting out in his second career. We waited. We paid off our debt. We deferred gratification. I did not make money in the real estate market, but I still have my house. And all our other debts are paid off. Financially, we are in a stronger position than if we had gone the first house, second house route. 11) I follow our expenses monthly tracking them with our credit card statements. If expenses appear to be going too high, I cut back. Savings must always be much higher than expenses.
12) I sweat the small stuff. I make my coffee at home. I pack lunches. I don't buy the kids everything they want and I do say "NO". I show our boys the expenses for maintaining our household and the income flow in. They learn that there is money available for whatever they desire but we choose not to spend like our friends. Sad for them, but good for our net worth. 13) Take a small portion of savings and do get maximal returns on that cash: go for a trip, buy the computer, have a family reunion. Saving money to leave to the kids is not in our plan. Our plan is to be self reliant, independent and ensure that our kids have the education, skills and mindset to be high earners and not dependent on their parents. I think it makes good sense for people to get the maximal return for their work time. If you aren't earning as much as you can in the work you are enjoying then it is always a good policy to review this state of affairs and try to maximize earnings in your field. Still can't get more money? Learn new skills that will bring more money in. Low earners, as we learned from our own experiences, just do not have a chance to accumulate assets. Their earnings go towards survival requirements. Thus, we will be encouraging our kids to go into high income generating areas that they have an interest in. 14) Change jobs judiciously to increase your income and skills. Try and get good benefits. Be brave. Members of our family took risks and started businesses. They are well rewarded for their efforts. If your first career doesn't provide you with a good standard of living and skill set - change it. Go back to school and do it over again. Just don't debt yourself into slavery. There are tons of scholarships, grants and if you cannot get an education freely in this manner - work and build up an education reserve so you can pay for the second career education. And if your employer can pay for you to do this - do it.

1. Avoid feeding your child big meals close to bedtime, and don't give her anything containing caffeine less than six hours before bedtime. 2. After dinner, avoid all stimulating activities, says Carol L. Rosen, M.D., medical director of pediatric sleep services. 3. Warn your child that bedtime is in five minutes, or give him a choice -"Do you want to go to bed now or in five minutes?" -- but do this only once. 4. Establish a consistent and relaxing bedtime routine that lasts between 20 and 30 minutes and ends in your child's bedroom. Avoid scary stories or TV shows. How To Protect Kids This Flu Season Doctors at a Medical Center have around the mouth or face when either
offered some tips on how to protect kids this flu season. The flu is an infection of the nose, throat and lungs caused by a variety of strains of influenza viruses. While the flu typically causes mild symptoms, it can be severe enough to cause hospitalization or even death. Flu most commonly occurs in the winter and early spring. While the best way to prevent the seasonal flu is to get vaccinated. Children's doctors and Pediatrics give the following tips on how to stop the spread of flu germs: 1. Cough and sneeze into a tissue. If you don't have time to get a tissue, bend your arm and sneeze or cough into it. Teach your children to do the same. 2. Use tissues for wiping runny noses and catching sneezes. Throw the tissues in the trash after each use. Wear a mask if you are coughing or sneezing frequently. 3. Avoid kissing your child on or of you are ill. 4. Make sure everyone washes their hands before and after coming into close contact with someone with the flu. Everyone should wash their hands with soap and warm water for at least 15 seconds (about as long as one verse of Happy Birthday). You may also use a waterless hand cleaner in addition to hand washing or if soap and water are not available. 5. Don't let children share pacifiers, cups, spoons, forks, washcloths, or towels. Never share toothbrushes. 6. Wash dishes, forks, cups and spoons in hot, soapy water or the dishwasher. 7. Change cloth towels often and wash them in hot water. 8. Wipe all surfaces, including toys, with a disinfectant or soap and hot water. 9. Keep children, particularly infants, away from secondhand tobacco smoke. Children who are exposed to tobacco smoke have an increased risk for respiratory illness.
familiar. 5. Avoid singing or rocking your child to sleep, because if she wakes in the middle of the night she may need you to sing or rock her back to sleep -- a condition known as sleep-onset association disorder. (If you have already been doing this, try to phase this behavior out gradually.) Instead, have her get used to falling asleep with a transitional object, like a favorite blanket or stuffed animal. 6. Make sure your child is comfortable. Clothes and blankets should not restrict movement, and the bedroom temperature shouldn't be too warm or too cold. 7. If your child calls for you after you've left his room, wait a few moments before responding. This will remind him that he should be asleep, and it'll give him the chance to soothe himself and even fall back asleep while he is waiting for you. 8. If your child comes out of her room after you've put her to bed, walk her back and gently but firmly remind her that it's bedtime. 9. Give your child tools to overcome his worries. These can include a flashlight, a spray bottle filled with "monster spray," or a large stuffed animal to "protect" him. 10. Set up a reward system. Each night your child goes to bed on time and stays there all night, she gets a star. After three stars, give her a prize.

Drinking low-calorie cranberry juice regularly may help get your blood pressure under control, suggest new findings. In a study that measured the effects of drinking low-calorie cranberry juice, participants drank either low-calorie juice or a placebo drink every day for eight weeks as part of a controlled diet. Blood pressure was measured at the beginning, mid-point and end of the study. After eight weeks, blood pressure values had significantly dropped from an average of 121/73 mmHg to 118/70 mmHg for those drinking the lowcalorie cranberry juice. The placebo group showed no change. Researchers noted that cranberry juice is rich in antioxidants - naturally occurring molecules in fruit, tea, wine and other foods - which have been associated with lower blood pressure in other studies.

A new respiratory illness similar to the Sars virus that spread globally in 2003 and killed hundreds of people has been identified in a man who is being treated in Britain. The 49-year-old man, who was transferred to a London hospital by air ambulance from Qatar, is the second person confirmed with the coronavirus. The first case was a patient in Saudi Arabia who has since died. Officials are still determining what threat the new virus may pose. The World Health Organization has not recommended any travel restrictions. Prof John Watson, head of the respiratory diseases department at the UK's Health Protection Agency, said: "In the light of the severity of the illness that has been identified in the two confirmed cases, immediate steps have been taken to ensure that people who have been in contact with the UK case have not been infected, and there is no evidence to suggest that they have.

This new virus is different from any coronaviruses that have previously been identified in humans. There have been a small number of other cases of serious respiratory illness in the Middle East in the past three months, one of whom was treated in the UK but has since died. This person's illness is also being investigated, although there is no evidence as yet to suggest that it is caused by the same virus or linked to the current case. No other confirmed cases have been identified to date in the UK. Sars is a serious respiratory infection that caused a global outbreak in 2002, spreading from Hong Kong to more than 30 different countries around the world and killing around 800 people. Although it has not been eradicated its spread was fully contained in 2003. Like other coronaviruses, it is spread through droplets of body fluids produced by sneezing and coughing.
"Further information about these cases is being developed for healthcare workers in the UK, as well as advice to help maintain increased vigilance for this virus." He said there was no specific evidence of the virus spreading from person to person and he had no advice for the public or returning travellers. Peter Openshaw, director of the Centre for Respiratory Infection at Imperial College London, told Reuters that at this stage the novel virus looked unlikely to prove a concern, and may well only have been identified due to sophisticated testing techniques. And Prof John Oxford, a virology expert at Queen Mary, University of London, said he felt "somewhat relaxed" about the news. "Sars was very quick off the mark infecting hospital staff etc and this new virus does not to me appear to be in the same 'big bang' group." Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses which includes ones that cause

An online poll asking our readers who they thought was Bollywoods biggest heroine right now, and we got an overwhelming response. While Priyanka received 31 percent votes, Kareena the current Heroine got 25 percent votes and Katrina Kaif came third with 24 percent votes. The others in the running were Vidya Balan with 10 percent votes and Rani Mukerji with 5 percent. Won't Back Down (G) * * *
Perfect timing to kick off the school year comes Won't Back Down. Titles count in the movies and 20th Century Fox hits the bull's eye in this searing drama inspired by true events. Over time films about the school experience have come and gone. Classics like The Blackboard Jungle and To Sir With Love have scored well among legions of fans. With Won't Back Down we have the telling tale of two determined women who go against the system to make things better for their kids. All Jamie Fitzpatrick wants is a fair shake for her young daughter. Top draw Maggie Gyllenhall play fast and loose as a mom who will go all out to save her daugher. Too bad for her the school she's her kid's at happens to be Adams Elementary,an education insitution that just doesn't seem to care. Many parents with school age kids across North America can relate to her
plight. While Jamie tries to "shake" things up an instructor at the school is having her own problems. Nona Roberts is one of those tried and true troopers who is having difficulties with domestic duties. Somehow these two women with different backgrounds unite and take on the establishment. True to form, Won't Back Down is an emotional rollercoaster with solid performances. This film effectively deals with some of the problems facing schools and the dilemma folks calling for change face. It's David vs. Goliath all over again as Gyllenhaal and Davis rally the troops and square off against a host of special interests trying to protect their turf and the children be damned. A top supporting cast bolsters this heartbreaker of a film full of pain and struggle. Many other social issues are encountered in this smartly developed from director .Daniel Barnz.

Air-conditioning is available almost everywhere, but be sure you confirm before you book. The absence of climate control in your room, if youre not prepared for it, can be a vacation breaker. Upscale restaurants and fine dining, as we know them, are the exception rather than the rule, but these islands do boast of some of the best little holes in the wall Ive ever come across. The atmosphere in these sometimes raunchy little cafs and restaurants, and the often outrageous local cuisine, makes eating out an experience to remember. But even those who like fine dining and a good bottle of wine will find opportunities to indulge. The Romora Bay Club on Harbour Island is one; the Green Turtle Club on Green Turtle Cay in the Abacos is another. Adventures on land and sea abound in the Out Islands. Most of them, though, require a modicum of self-organization. Throughout the following pages youll find references to beaches, dive sites, snorkeling, bicycling and walking opportunities. Very few of these activities, with the exception of scuba diving, can be formally structured. A good map and the ability to make friends with the locals local knowledge can produce golden opportunities is all you need. Hotel employees are also a good source for local secrets. Other than that, youll need to head out on your own and see what you can find. Beyond the Out Islands, far to the south, lie the Turks and Caicos Islands. These are not a part of the Bahamas per se, but they are a part of the Bahamian archipelago and an increasingly popular destination for Americans, Canadians and Europeans. So, it seems only right that we give them coverage in these pages. Most people have heard of Nassau, some have heard of Freeport and Grand
Bahama, but very few have heard of the Out Islands. If you really want to get away from life in the fast lane, enjoy a few quiet days in the sun on some of the most beautiful and unspoiled beaches in the world, the opportunities offered by the Out Islands are almost limitless. With rare exceptions, hotel standards in the Bahamas are not what you get on the US mainland, or in Europe. Due to the fact that almost everything has to be imported, and is therefore expensive, there is a definite trend to put off until tomorrow what should be done today. Hotels that might have been considered fairly upscale five years ago can quickly become slightly seedy as time and weather take their toll. Dont expect too much, especially in the Out Islands and Turks and Caicos. But dont let a little inconvenience spoil your vacation. Getting There: For visitors arriving by air, the Bahamas are served through Nassau by most US airlines and by international airlines from Canada and Europe, and to a slightly more limited degree through Freeport. The Out Islands are served mainly by Bahamas Air via connections in Nassau and Freeport. How to Get There Both Nassau and Freeport are major US and international gateways. Chrysler gave its Dodge Avenger and closely related Chrysler 200 (formerly Sebring) sedans a much-needed refresh a couple of years ago, but despite a memorable ad campaign with Eminem, the car was mostly a case of too little, too late. The overwrought styling, lowbuck interiors, busy ride, and a general lack of refinement of the original cars were merely served to show how they should have been a few years earlier. As they continue into 2013--for one more year before being replaced by all-new models--these sedans stand as bargain-priced, relative to other midsizers, but not entirely competitive with respect to styling, features, or fuel economy. Although the 200 looks dated on the outside, it feels up to Volkswagen standards on the inside and it includes materials and finishes that are a world better than the old hard plastics. Likewise, Chrysler has doubled up on insulation to make the 200's interior a very quiet place (except for the coarse four-cylinder engine's note), and softened the ride. While handling and ride quality might still not be its forte, the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 and six-speed automatic is a strong, refined combination and the base four-cylinder and six-speed automatic is a tolerable combo; just stay away from the base four-speed automatic in the LX. The silhouette of the 2013 Chrysler 200 has a way of tricking you into thinking the cabin is somewhat small for a midsize sedan--and the combination of the tall dash, wide seats, and narrower glass areas add to that visual 'trick'-but once you climb in you'll be a convert; whether by the numbers or from inside, the 200 stacks up really well against segment leaders like the Hyundai Sonata. Even in back, there's enough space for two adults, or three in a pinch, although the high beltline
Autos
might require some Dramamine. The Chrysler 200 is missing some of the active-safety features now offered in other mid-size sedans, yet it's a safe, secure pick, with top ratings from both the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and federal government. Equipment for the base LX model is generous, but it still doesn't include Bluetooth hands-free calling connectivity. Audio systems come with an auxiliary input jack, but base models also lack a USB input or iPod control. Mid-level Touring sedans offer the V-6 as optional and add automatic climate control, a Homelink garage door opener, a power driver seat, and satellite radio. A sunroof is an option, as is Bluetooth and a DVD/hard-drive audio system with 28GB of storage. At the top of the lineup is the leatherlined Limited model, with options on that include navigation with live traffic and voice commands, plus Boston Acoustics premium sound. For 2013, Chrysler allows more buyers to get the special look of the 200S by offering it as an 'S' package rather than as a separate model. Three different S packages dress up the LX, Touring, and Limited models to include 18-inch polished painted wheels, a black finish grille, fog lamp bezels, projector fog lamps, black headlamps, and a black Chrysler badge. The 2013 Chrysler 200 remains also offered in two-door Convertible form, offering the same two engines but with somewhat different equipment levels. These models, while a mainstay in rental-car fleets, are reasonably good picks for those who want a convertible on a tight budget and plan to cruise but don't need a vehicle that feels sporty. Back-seat space and trunk space in 200 Convertibles, whether you go for the hardtop or softtop, are better than in most other drop-tops.
The rise in popularity of smart phones with social media applications can put consumers at risk of fraud. The Province, Consumer Protection BC, and the Better Business Bureau are teaming up during Fraud Prevention Month to provide tips to help British Columbians get smart about their smart phone usage. According to a recent study by Javelin Research and Strategy, 32% of all smart phone users dont have the most current version of their operating system, 62% dont use a password to protect their home screens and 32% save login information on their phones. Here is a typical user scenario: Samantha carries her smart phone with her everywhere. She runs all of her favourite social networks from her phone and its loaded up with all of the latest apps, including one app that allows her to do all of her banking on the go. Samantha also keeps all of her personal information on her smart phone so that it is handy phone numbers, addresses, birthdates and even passwords. One day Samantha leaves her phone on the bus. Not only is Samanthas personal information now available to any stranger who picks up her phone, she is now a potential victim of fraud and identify theft. Here are some tips to protect you and your family and become smart phone savvy: Get the latest operating system for your phone so your security is up-todate. Add a password to your phone for access, so if it is lost a person does not
have access to your phone and your personal identifiers. Password-protect everything, preferably with unique passwords for each social media service. Look for remote wiping programs in the user manual for your smart phone so in case of loss you can remove and destroy all data from your phone from a remote location. Check applications for geo-tagging that allows you to tag a photo or video with their current location. You can turn this tagging option off in applications if you feel uncomfortable broadcasting your location publically. Dont do your banking over public Wi-Fi networks to avoid risk of financial loss. Be sure all the apps you download come from legitimate vendors. Check user reviews and learn about what the application needs to access on your smart phone. For example: If a wallpaper need access to your contact list, there probably is a virus attached to the application. Start with Trust when dealing with businesses and companies youve never heard of by researching them at www.mbc.bbb.org. To stay informed about possible scams and to warn others: - Visit Consumer Protection BC on Facebook at: www.facebook.com/ ConsumerProtectionBC - Report any fraudulent activity to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre by calling 1 888 495-8501.

Brumbies Fijian-born winger Henry Speight has attained his Australian status and will be eligible to play for the Wallabies next year. Speights status changed last month after having completed his 3-year stay in Australia and thus will not be considered a foreign-contracted player. The 24-year-old was educated at Suva Grammar School where he played agegrade rugby before heading to New Zealand. He was spotted by Christian Lealiifano while playing for Waikato in the ITM Cup in 2010. Speight joined

Sides won't discuss revenue splitting When the NHL and the NHL Players Association meet Friday in New York, it will have to be a pretty large venue to incorporate the elephant in the room. The two sides will put aside the biggest, toughest issue -- how to split up the $3.3 billion in league revenue -and focus on the other issues that will have to ultimately be resolved to craft a new collective bargaining agreement. "We are going to re-engage on some of the other issues. We have crafted an agenda of items that we hope will produce progress and some agreements that may aid the overall process," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said in an email. "Until the (NHLPA) moves on the economics though, we won't be in a position to make a deal." A request for comment from the NHLPA was not returned. Not that things like free agency, arbitration rights, entry-level contracts, player safety, supplemental discipline, working conditions, pensions, drug testing, the future of the NHL in the Olympics and the question of who owns the game (as far as realignment, schedule and playoff format go) are going to be easily resolved, either. The fact of the matter is, how the basic question of splitting up the revenues is answered could have an effect on free agency, arbitration and entry-level contracts and vice versa. If the two sides could find a way to put a drag on salaries for players moving from the entry-level system to their second contracts -- we saw the big deals guys like Taylor Hall of the Edmonton Oilers and Tyler Seguin of the Boston Bruins received recently; Hall got a seven-year deal worth $6 million a year-- then that, perhaps, could slow the overall commitment owners have to make to salaries and affect how the salary cap is structured. Same thing with arbitration and free agency. If it takes, say, eight, nine or 10 years, rather than a possible seven, for a player to become an unrestricted free agent, then that might slow salary growth as well and affect the big picture. The two sides are stuck in their current trenches when it comes to the basic
as one of the Brumbies international imports. He was handed his big break in 2011 when he made his debut on the wing in week one against the Chiefs going on to become a revelation and a star for the Australian Capital franchise. Speights foreign import spot has been taken up by giant South African and Lions lock Etienne Oosthuizen. At just 19 years of age, Oosthuizen is the youngest player on the Brumbies list, but is also the biggest at 198cm and 120kg.
Dewan Chand has been given time to appeal his 4-year jail term although hes pending bail application was denied by the Labasa High Court. Chand appeared before Judge Justice Salesi Temo and was told he is given between now and his next High Court appearance to appeal his sentencing. He is due to appear next on October 23.
Chand was sentenced to four years imprisonment on September 12 after he was found guilty of defilement and indecent charges. He will be eligible for parole after serving three years and six months. Meanwhile, Fiji FA in its next Board of Control meeting is expected to make a decision who will be Chands successor.
