JAMES ASHBY STATEMENT 28 Sept 2012 We can confirm that Mr. Ashby has settled his claims against the Commonwealth on favorable grounds. This leaves Mr. Slipper facing our legal action on his own and without the support of the Federal Government. The settlement does not extend to Mr Slipper. The Federal Government has retreated from its much publicised allegations that the case brought by James Ashby is an abuse of process withdrawing its abuse case in full and settling its case. The Commonwealth has agreed to implement an improved education program for staff in relation to issues of bullying and harassment and to offer specific training for MPs and senators in relation to sexual harassment. We welcome this initiative by the government, as it was a key aspect of the reforms sought by Mr. Ashby. The commonwealth will also pay Mr. Ashby $50,000. The Court has already ordered Mr. Slipper to pay Mr. Ashby indemnity costs after criticism by the Court over the conduct of Mr Slippers case. Maurice Blackburn, a firm closely associated with the Australian labour movement and the Federal Government, ceased to act for Mr. Slipper last week. Mr Ashby has consistently maintained that his motivations in bringing the case were:

1 2

to stop Mr Slippers conduct against him; to prevent recurrence of that conduct in relation to parliamentary staff, current or future; and

not about money.

These objectives have now been met as regard to the action against the Federal Government.

(more) Mr. Ashby will continue to pursue his case against Mr. Slipper. The case resumes in court Oct 2. MR. ASHBY IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR INTERVIEW. Anthony McClellan Ashby Spokesperson ENDS
