CANARY WHARF UNDERGROUND STATION, LONDON As part of the London Underground Jubilee Line extension project, Canary Wharf

underground station has rapidly become the second busiest of all the stations on the entire underground network, providing an essential transport link in the heart of Londons newest and biggest business development. The three glazed canopies provide not only an attractive addition to the area, but filter natural daylight through the station below right down to the platform level As the outside face of the station, three canopies were erected by MERO to enable the 40,000 passengers per hour to seamlessly transverse through the station to the offices, bars and shops above ground. The large main East and West entrance canopies provide the main route into the station below, whilst the smaller Fosterito canopy acts as an overflow route out of the station. The double curved canopies are constructed of fabricated tapering arches with integral lighting bolted down to a concrete horseshoe. Circular members tie the arches together and act as the glazing purlins, supporting stainless steel spiders and the rotules of the curved point fixed glazing panels, to a tolerance of just 3mm. Around the perimeter of the glazing, a gutter is hidden beneath stainless steel grilles, and adjacent stainless steel louvres seamlessly integrate the air ventilation extractors from the station below. The entire roof flows into the landscaping around and the glass is protected from accidental access by a perimeter stainless steel handrail. Each canopy has an integrated entrance screen, which incorporates the lighting, electronic displays and CCTV equipment. The screens feature specialist sliding glazed doors that stack in front of each other when open, and enable the entrances to be closed and locked at night or during a security alert.
