For adults age 55 and older.

Zumba is the Latin inspired dance fitness program that makes working out fun! Zumba Gold was designed for the active senior, with less
intense dance routines for beginners and older adults using modified movements. The Zumba Gold workout provides participants with the opportunity to improve balance, flexibility and cardiovascular strength. Join instructor Denny Montas for this Zumba Gold free six-week class, and see if exercising to a lively beat is the workout for you. Maximum 20. Registration is required. Senior Room: Open For Your Leisure

New Computer Center Hours:


News Flash!
Beginning in October 2012 the Computer Rooms and the Senior Room hours will be changed to open at 12:00 Noon. More details to come about the Grand Opening Day!

The Senior Room, located between the Computer Center and the Library, is a comfortable room for adults age 55 and older to read, play cards and board games, and attend classes at various times each month. MondayFriday 2:008:00 p.m. Saturday 12:006:00 p.m.
Four computers* are available to seniors. *You need a Takoma Park Library card to access the computers. Food and drinks are not permitted in the Senior Room.

Enhance You Brain Fitness With This Memory Workout!

Memory Academy is a five-week course providing memory improvement techniques. This course explains how memory works; offers quick strategies for remembering names, faces and numbers; provides basic memory tools such as linking ideas and creating visual images; and maximizes the effectiveness of using memory aids such as lists. (This program is not intended for people with Alzheimers disease or other forms of dementia). The Takoma Park Recreation Department, in partnership with Holy Cross Hospital is offering this special program for seniors in Takoma Park. Bone Builders

Barbara Brown instructs this line dancing class and demonstrates how exercise can be fun with music. No experience necessary so come and enjoy the activity. Registration is required. Dance Studio. Free.

Bone Builders consists of three parts: balance exercises, weight training and discussion concerning diet, safety and exercise. This program, in partnership with Montgomery County, uses trained RSVP volunteers supervised by a certified trainer. Registration is required. Dance Studio. Free.

Gentle Tai ChiNew Beginners ClassLevel 1

Kirk Talbott will introduce you to the ancient Chinese internal martial art of tai-chi chuan, a gentle moving meditation that improves health and restores balance and calm. The class will emphasize relaxation, posture, and breathing through the slow, integrated exercise of the traditional Yang-style short form. This class is for beginning students. Dance Studio. Carol Mermey, RYT, will introduce you to the ways yoga can help you increase flexibility, strength, and balance, using a series of seated and standing poses. Learn breathing and relaxation techniques. Beginners and experienced students welcome, work at your own level. You must bring a yoga mat to every class. Registration is required. Eight classes. Limit of 16 students. Dance Studio. Free.
This class may be full due to its popularity, however a waiting list is available.

**The Game Room is available for seniors to play pool, table tennis, basketball arcade and other active games.

Computer Classes (Session I: 9/12/1210/17/12)


Wednesdays, October 2, 10, 17 11:30 a.m.1:30 p.m.
Learn to use the internet, a word processing program, and email. You need a Takoma Park Library card* to access the computers, and take this course. Limit six participants. Instructors: Phil Shapiro, Jim Mueller and Jane Hawkanson. Registration is required. Six weeks. Computer Center. Class Fee: $10 Payable to the City of Takoma Park. *Library card fees: Free/Takoma Park residents, $37/ Montgomery County residents, and $60 non-Mont. Co. residents.

Introduction to Conversational English


Session II: Tuesdays/Thursdays Begins October 30 thru December 13 1:00 2:30 p.m.
This is a six-week class that will meet two times per week. The 12 classes are designed to provide students with an introduction to conversational English for senior citizens whose first language is not English. Each class will focus on listening, understanding, speaking and pronunciation through the study of familiar, everyday events and situations in English. Class size: Min. 6/Max 12. Needlework Get-together

Creative Arts Workshops

Introduction to Latch Hook


Monday, October 1 (last class) 10:00 a.m.11:00 p.m.
Latch hooks are used to knot pieces of yarn on a canvas to make wall hangings, pillows, and small rugs. Students will make a simple design on a 12 by 12 canvas. 4 weeks. Limit 6 students. Registration is required. For more information, please call 301-891-7280. Free. (Session:9/1010/1)

How to register for trips beginning Tuesday, October 2 (phone opens at 8:45 a.m.) :
1. To begin the registration process, please call 301-891-7280 to include your name on a pre-registration list.
Note: This list will hold the participants place in line for 3 days to one week, depending on when the trip is scheduled in the month. Registration for the current months trip (s) will usually begin on the first business day of the month. To insure proper processing, it is best to speak directly with a Recreation Department staff person. Do not leave a recorded message.

2. A Takoma Park Recreation Department registration form is required for each trip.
Note: This form must be received by the end of the pre-registration period, or the participant will be removed from the list, and the space will become available.

3. Please register in-person, or mail the registration form to: Takoma Park Recreation Department, 7500 Maple Avenue, Takoma Park, Maryland 20912.
Note: We have a fair first come-first serve system for all participants. Trips are popular and fill up fast, so register early. If you have any questions, please call Paula Lisowski, Seniors Program Manager at 301-891-7280. You may also call the general Recreation information line at 301-891-7290.

This expo extravaganza, sponsored by the Baltimore County Department of Aging, showcases the latest in information, resources, products and services to approximately 11,000 attendees. Older adults, baby boomers, and persons with disabilities can visit 250 plus exhibitors and vendors; enjoy continuous entertainment (The Fabulous Hubcaps; and Jr. Cline and the Recliners); bid on silent auction items; and take advantage of a wide assortment of free health screenings. Bring lunch or spending money to purchase lunch. Rain or Shine!

Trip # 2: Carroll County Historical Museum; Baughers Restaurant & Market, Westminster, MD

Senior Request

The Historical Society of Carroll County (HSCC) collects a wide range of objects, from the eighteenth century to the present including household furnishings, fine arts, clothing and household textiles, domestic and craft tools, and the library collection, which includes manuscripts, newspapers, maps, books, and photographs, exhibited in the Sherman-Fisher-Shellman House and the Shriver-Weybright Exhibition Gallery. After our visit to the HSSC Museum, we will have lunch at the popular Baughers Restaurant for fresh produce, country style meals, home made bakery and ice cream! Bring spending money for lunch and shopping. Rain or Shine!
