Trash left at soccer complex discussed at meeting

A complaint letter sent to the
Pinelands Commission was dis-
cussed at the monthly committee
workshop meeting Sept. 25.
The letter complained about
the amount of trash left at the
new soccer complex.
The Pinelands Commission
received a letter of complaint
about the complex and stated
there is broken glass and debris
and trash left behind at the com-
plex, said Sue Onorato, town-
ship manager.
Prior to re-grading the new
soccer fields two years ago, this
complex was under-used, Ono-
rato said. To increase the parks
use and meet the needs of a grow-
ing soccer program, the complex
has been undergoing a transfor-
mation from softball fields to soc-
cer fields. In the process, the
fields are being used much more
than previously, and the neigh-
boring properties are experienc-
ing the presence of the kids play-
ing at the fields.
By the fields being used on a
regular basis, the vandalism has
been greatly reduced. This is a
win-win for the community. The
residents have a better recreation
complex to enjoy and resources
previously used to repair vandal-
ism that was occurring there
greatly reduced.
Additionally, a gate was added
to the entrance of the park by
IMAA about two years ago to se-
cure the complex after hours.
The gate is closed by volunteers
at the end of the day to secure the
complex from non-organized use
and greatly reduces vandalism.

increase in burglaries

Red Lion Station has seen an in-
crease in daytime residential bur-
glaries.

Monument honors 9/11 victims
In other news, there was an up-
date on the PSE&G situation im-
pacting Packenah Trail. The
township was asked if it would
assist in filing a petition to hold
off on any tree removal around
residential homes. PSE&G previ-
ously stated that any tree grow-
ing over three to 10 feet directly
under the wires is limiting and
will be removed.
The petition was sent in along
with the fee, and the state is cur-
rently completing its review.
Also, a public works employee
has been moved from part-time to
full-time. The Public Works De-
partment had been working
short-handed for over a year, ac-
cording to Onorato. The employ-
ee, whose salary is accounted for
in the budget, will now be receiv-
ing full-time wages and the asso-
ciated benefits.
Also, Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno
and the head of the Port Authori-
ty of New York and New Jersey,
Patrick J. Foye, will be in atten-
dance of the presentation of the
piece of the World Trade Center
to the Indian Mills Fire Company.
The steel was originally sitting
in a hangar in John F. Kennedy
International Airport following
the cleanup of ground zero. The
monument will honor those who
lost their lives in the 9/11 attacks
and will include state policemen
who lost their lives in the line of
duty, in addition to fallen firemen
and EMS in the area.
The governor was involved,
and had a list of organizations
trying to get the steel. He picked
Indian Mills Fire Company, and
he had the final hand in the
process. Rich Derose, an aide to
the governor, said he knew we
were looking to get the steel and
Gov. Christie finalized every-
thing, Stanley Rowe, president
of the Indian Mills Fire Compa-
ny, Told the Sun in August.
Additionally, the 2012 Best
Practices Inventory review was
discussed at the meeting regard-
ing campaigns.
We need to have our ordi-
nance reviewed to ensure it in-
cludes a $300 limit of campaign
contributions allowed for an
award of contract to be ap-
proved, Onorato said.
The committee has until the
end of the year to change the
wordage to limit the campaign
contributions.
The next meeting will be held
Oct. 2 at 7:30 p.m. at the munici-
pal building located at 105 Willow
Grove Rd.

Seneca High School will be
holding its first-ever Walk Under
the Stars, a Relay for Life event
through the American Cancer So-
ciety on Oct. 12.
At the end of the school year,
the Lenape Regional High School
District chooses a book for One
Book, One School for summer
reading program. This past sum-
mer, students read The Fault in
Our Stars, by John Green, a story
about teenagers battling cancer
and learning about love.
Every school in the district se-
lects one book, and all students
and staff members need to read
the book, said Beth Strittmatter,
English department coordinator
and co-chair of One Book, One
School said. Its an emotional
story about cancer and two bright
teenagers. Under the tragedy is a
love story.
The New York Times Best-
selling book follows two Indi-
anapolis teenagers, Hazel Lan-
caster and Augustus Waters, who
meet at a Cancer Kid and Support
Group, and eventually fall in love.
Everybody in the school reads
the one book. This year we read
Our Fault in the Stars, which dis-
cusses cancer. Its an important
topic that affects so many people
that we wanted to open it up for
discussion for the students, said
Kathy Donoghue, media special-
ist and co-chair of One Book, One
School.
Were looking to promote
reading. With this One Book, One
School, students are more likely
to do it because they want to be
part of the discussion, said
Donoghue.

By day, Dr. Amy Golden, DMD,
of Voorhees improves peoples
smiles as a full-time dentist with
her own practice in Berlin.
In her free time, she enjoys na-
ture photography and continues
to help people smile by displaying
her works. Golden, along with 11
other local photographers, are the
featured artists at the Samaritan
Healthcare and Hospice Inpatient
Art Gallery at Virtua Memorial,
175 Madison Avenue located in
Mount Holly. A portion of art sale
proceeds will benefit Samaritans
programs and services
Golden chaired the committee
of South Jersey Camera Club
members whose works will be on
display at the Samaritan gallery
until Oct. 31.
I witnessed Samaritan's ex-
traordinary care during the ter-
minal illnesses of my two close
friends, Dr. Karen Knox and
Susan Tannery. I am grateful for
their wonderful support during a
very difficult time for family and
friends. I decided to chair this
photographic exhibit to show my
appreciation to Samaritan. The
tender kindness of the hospice
workers will always be remem-
bered and helps to soften the sad
memories of my friends' last
days, said Golden.
Her work on display is entitled
Pure Passion.

ewer young adults are living at
home. Why does that matter?
According to economists deci-
phering recently released Census data,
it means that the Great Recession
might be over. For real, this time.
The Associated Press talked to a
number of experts when the data came
out a couple of weeks ago. While none
were turning cartwheels over the state
of the economy, they pointed to a num-
ber of factors that indicate that things
are getting better.
We all know that, technically, the re-
cession ended a few years ago. Yet, we
all see that unemployment remains
high and the housing market has been
really slow to show dramatic improve-
ment.
The new Census data, though, high-
lights a few things that perhaps are
more meaningful when it comes to
measuring economic strength.
One of those factors is the number of
young adults living at home. When
that number goes down, as it did in
2011 to 13.6 percent from 14.2 percent,
its a good thing. The experts The AP
spoke to said the trend indicates more
younger adults are more confident
about finding a job or attending a col-
lege.
There was more good news, too.
More people were moving to new hous-
es and towns. Poverty is slowing, too.
Indeed, one look at the better than 8
percent unemployment rate snuffs any
thought of a red-hot economy. But, if
people are feeling better about the fu-
ture, and acting on those feelings by
getting back into the swing of things,
its not only a good sign, its a true
boost to the economy. They likely will
spend more, for example, which will
help to create jobs.
While Mom and Dad might have
mixed feelings about waving goodbye
to their adult children, they should
know that, according to the experts,
its a good sign. It means that, perhaps,
after years of stagnation and reces-
sion, better economic times are getting
closer.

Games-like competition into the mix of
book-inspired events.
Last year, the Hunger Games was so
popular, we wanted to do it again. We want-
ed to inspire them to do something for oth-
ers, said Donoghue.
Everything is centered around the
book, and we thought this would be some-
thing thats unique, said Strittmatter.
Strittmatter and co-chair Donoghue as a
team with 10 other members, made up of
students and staff, began putting the event
together in the beginning of the year. Since
then, student involvement has been contin-
ually increasing.
Were doing it through the American
Cancer Society, and the kids are just sign-
ing up now, said Strittmatter.
The event is strictly open to students
and faculty, however donations will be ac-
cepted from parents and members of the
community.
Its just for Seneca people, but were
asking for the support of parents, family
and neighbors of the kids to give back as
well, said Donoghue.
The event will take place on Oct. 12 from
6 p.m., until 6 a.m. the next morning, with
no sleep in between.
Were going to have a walk-a-thon out-
side on the track. Hopefully its not too
cold, said Donoghue. We have so many
things planned for the event, including arts
and crafts, a yoga instructor, a kickboxing
instructor, bands and hopefully a bonfire
and so much more. Theyll be busy, hope-
fully inspired and raise money for the
American Cancer Society.
According to a letter sent to students, all
students and staff who participate in Walk
Under the Stars will have the option of
forming a team. Teams can create their
own names, t-shirts, flags, glow sticks and
banners to promote their group. Each team
will also be assigned a designated area in-
side the track to set up tents, lawn chairs,
blankets and picnic items.
Students will not be able to come and go
from the event and are expected to stay for
the full 12 hours, much like a lock-in event.
An additional event inspired by The
Fault in Our Stars will take place in No-
vember, during Senecas pep rally. Students
will be raising money and donating their

We have a pep rally, and at the
end were cutting hair and send-
ing it to Pantenes Beautiful
Lengths. Were going to make the
kids that signed up stars through-
out the month of November, said
Donoghue.
So far, 40 students have signed
up to cut a minimum of eight
inches of their hair or raise
money and shave their heads.
Members of the staff have signed
up for haircuts and donations, as
well.
Both Donoghue and Strittmat-
ter arent sure of a second walk-a-
thon, but have hopes for a suc-
cessful first-time event.
We dont know how successful
its going to be, so I guess it de-
pends on how successful were
going to be this year, said
Donoghue Were trying to make
it a spectacular event theyll find
memorable in their school year.
Were very excited; its a first
time event in our district. The
kids are really looking forward to
the event, Strittmatter said.
Were hoping the kids find a lot
of value in this.

will never forget the extraordi-
nary care and assistance that a
hospice team in Pennsylvania
provided my father and my fami-
ly. They ensured that his final few
days were comfortable and digni-
fied.

closely involved with the passing
of two dear friends who died in
the extraordinary care of hospice
caregivers. Hospice provides a
caring and compassionate serv-
ice, comfort and information dur-
ing a very stressful and sad time.
Carson chose Fingers Crossed
for this exhibit because its
cheerful color gives a reminder of
bright times and warm em-
braces.
Samaritan was a kind helper
to my late wife in her final
weeks, said Ralph Berglund of
Medford. He chose to display two
tulip photographs because of the
pleasant and calming feeling they
will give hospice patients and
families.
When Amy Golden proposed
that our camera club provide a
collection of photographs to hang
in the Samaritan Inpatient Hos-
pice Center Art Gallery for the
benefit of the patients families, it
made me think how much my
wife and I would have appreciated
such a display when her 92-year
old mother was going through a
similar fate. Since then, we have
witnessed two more friends pass
away in similar circumstances,
also with nothing like this for
family and friends. I am more
than happy to take part in this
photographic exhibit, said John
Costello of Marlton.
