Executive Summary
The Markham International Sports Training Academy(MISTA) is envisioned as an Olympic standard, regional sports facility and dynamic development vision that includes the 2015 Pan Am Aquatics Centre and Badminton Fieldhouse integrated into one unied campus masterplan.
Executive Summary
Landscape Concept : Continuous Greenspace In order to accentuate the Sport focus of the MISTA project, the masterplans landscape concept merges open spaces with building form to extend the pedestrian realm into a continuous park sequence. Site geometry ows thru the project energizing public spaces and reinforcing the movement and high energy associated with sport. At MISTA, the organic, curvilinear contours, topography and landforms extend from Central Park thru a North-South Galleria, the central spine of the Sport Complex. This sky-lit interior street is envisioned as a highly activated curvilinear space, lined with retail at grade and bridged above on several levels to connect the MISTA Fieldhouse with complimentary mixed-use ofce/residential programs. Massing Concept : Under One Roof On the North side of the Central Park, MISTA is covered by one continuous roof system to unify the project. The roofscape is modeled as a series of undulating ribbons with interstitial glazed skylights that allow indirect natural light to penetrate into the interior sport volumes. Portions of the roof surface are green and are accessible from grade. In effect the roofscape, or podium is part of the pedestrian open space park system. Iconic Development Sitting on top of this landscaped podium are 5 towers carefully sited to orient and overlook Central Park. These condominium towers are sculpted by the same curvilinear geometries to continue the uidity and movement motifs throughout the site. The iconic centerpiece of this masterplan composition is a 65 story point tower that twists dramatically from the podium overlooking Central Park. Envisioned as a vestar hotel and branded luxury residential tower, this building incorporates a translucent double-skinned curtain wall technology that controls solar gain. The exterior walls extend beyond the roof to create an iconic beacon visible at night. The Towers transparent base houses retail at grade, a Grand Ballroom at the piano nobile level, conference facilities, spa, health club, restaurant/bar, and a roof terrace with spiral stair to an outdoor pool. This extraordinary landmark project integrates High Performance Sport seamlessly into a mixed-use urban development. This project will be a unique destination in the GTA, expected to attract millions of visitors annually. MISTA will be the premier National center for excellence in Canadian sport and the development a unique urban campus where people can truly live, work and play.
MISTAs comprehensive sport program, over 950,000 sf, includes : Twin-Ice Rink Arena; a Multi-Court Facility; a 5,000 seat, 220,000 sf indoor Fieldhouse and event space with a 400 meter indoor track; Combative Sport and High Performance Athlete Training Centres; a Fitness Centre; and a Health and Wellness Centre (Sport Medicine). The existing Pan Am Aquatics program is enhanced by an additional 50m Pool and Dive Tank enabling MISTA to host world class aquatic events. The overall Sport complex is part of a visionary mixed-use urban development with 6,000,000 sf on 20 acres featuring retail, ofce, hotel and 3000 residential units, balanced by 7000 structured parking spaces below grade. Sustainable Development Envisioned as a sustainable project, MISTA incorporates energy features such as district energy, photovoltaic cells, stratied conditioning systems, centralized building automation and security systems, pneumatic-driven garbage removal systems, reuse of storm and wastewater, stormwater cisterns, green roofs, as well as incorporate energy-efcient exterior envelopes and integrated sustainable building materials. In essence, the MISTA project could be seen as a prototype for a new regional sports and recreation building type that is a highly integrated LEED Certied facility and development. Markham Live District MISTA is located on the NE quadrant of Markham Live, a new urban, 100 acre mixeduse, pedestrian intense, sport and entertainment district masterplanned by Adamson Associates. This high density Nodal City Centre is planned for high-order destination uses such as a Performing Arts Centre, Five Star Hotel and Convention Centre, Sports, Entertainment and Cultural Venues, World Class Retail, Multi-Media Entertainment Centre, Class A Ofce buildings, and First Class Residential Condominiums. Markham Live is a Transit Oriented Development anchored by a major multi-modal mobility hub (Metrolinx Go Transit, Viva/YRT and MTO 407 Transitway). MISTA is situated within a 5 minute walking radius (400m) of this centralized Metrolinx mobility hub. MISTA Masterplan The MISTA development is in the East Precinct of Markham Live bounded by Enterprise Dr, Main Street, Markham Live Street and Revis Street (N,W, S, E respectively). The development is organized around a Central Park, a 5 acre programmed urban park that forms a neighborhood centre. On the North side of the Park, the site is bisected by YMCA Blvd, the prime retail and residential street in the Markham Live District. MISTAs entrance and main facade is on YMCA Blvd fronting onto Central Park.
