Carlson is staggered by Allen Parks comeback

Two weeks ago, Carlson was riding high and tied atop the Downriver League standings at 4-0 and Allen Park was reeling at 2-2 after a lopsided to loss to Truman. Things sure have changed in two weeks. The Jags erased a 14point fourth-quarter deficit to win 23-22 and improve to 4-2 while dealing the Marauders their second straight loss, resulting in each team jockeying for playoff positioning in their final three games. Carlson led 22-8 with less than six minutes remaining, but the Jags went on a 15-point run late to secure the important one-point victory.

The run began on a Marauder miscue when an attempted Carlson punt saw the long snap go through the end zone for a safety. The Jags marched down the field following the punt kickoff and made it 22-17 after a one-yard touchdown run by Jake Makowski. After Allen Park lineman David DeLuca acrobatically recovered the onside kick, Nick Fulton found Jake Barann for a three-yard touchdown pass and a 23-22 Jaguar lead. Blocked-punt TD lets Kennedy escape Rails

Giovanna Manzella (27) scored the only goal of the game last Friday as Anderson knocked off Woodhaven in a battle for first place in the Downriver League. Manzella and the Titans earlier in the week beat Garrett Nabozny (4) and the Trenton Trojans and now have sole possession of first place in the league standings. The Titans entered the week with 33 points, ahead of both Woodhaven and Trenton. Find more soccer news beginning on Page 4-C

With a great last-minute effort Friday, Kennedy rallied to hang a 7-3 loss on the Lincoln Park Railsplitters. Kennedys Kevin Harris blocked a Lincoln Park punt and Tristan Simmons ran the ball back for a touchdown. The points were the only ones of the game for Kennedy and the victory was the Eagles their first of the season. For Lincoln Park, the nightmare continued. The Railsplitters now own a 58game losing streak. Down 0-3 with 4:24 left in the game, Kennedy knew its time was running out. They did not want to be the ones to lose to Lincoln Park, Kennedy Coach Paul

The score was Simmons first touchdown ever and he was thrilled with the sudden change of the game. I told my middle linebacker to shoot the a gap and try to block the punt, Simmons said. I saw no one around me, I scooped, and scored. The ball was right there, laid out perfectly. Swimmers gather in Allen Park

Sarah Wiltses defending champion Trenton Trojans will join the rest of the areas swimmers in Allen Park Saturday morning for the annual News-Herald Swimming and Diviing Championships. The Trojans are once again strong and deep this year, but the meet will also feature some strong swimmers from Roosevelt, Carlson/ Anderson and Grosse Ile. Find early results at www.
