~ Our Mission Statement ~

SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL

This past Thursday we celebrated the Feast of St. Vincent de Paul. St. Vincent was born in 1580 in Pouy, Landes, Gascony, France, to a family of peasant farmers. He had four brothers and two sisters. He first was educated under the Franciscan Fathers in Dax, France. He excelled in his studies and after four years was chosen by a gentleman to teach his small children. With this he was able to continue his studies without being a burden to his parents. In 1596, he went to the University of Toulouse for theological studies, and there he was ordained as a priest in 1600 in the Village of Chatillon in France. By one account, in 1605, on a voyage by sea from Marseilles to Narbonne, he fell into the hands of African pirates and was carried as a slave to Tunis. His captivity lasted about two years, until Divine Providence enabled him to effect his escape. After returning to France, de Paul went to Rome. There he continued his studies until 1609, when he was sent back to France on a mission to Henry IV of France; he served as chaplain to Queen Marguerite de Valois. For a while he was parish priest at Clichy. In Paris, Vincent came under the influence of a wise spiritual guide who gradually caused him to see that helping others was more important than helping himself. From 1612 he became teacher in the family of Emmanuel de Gondy, Count of Goigny, and General of the galleys of France. In 1622 de Paul was appointed chaplain to the galleys, and in this capacity he gave missions for the galley-slaves. Vincent was confessor and spiritual director to Madame de Gondi, and in 1625 he began giving preaching missions to the peasants on the estate with her aid, laying the foundations of a congregation which afterward became the Congregation of the Mission or Lazarists, so named on account of the Priory of St. Lazarus. In 1633, with the assistance of Louise de Marillac he founded the Daughters of Charity. He also fought against the Jansenist heresy. De Paul was renowned for his compassion, humility and generosity. For this reason he is known as the "Great Apostle of Charity".

Vincent was a man of action rather than of theory. The religious spirit he communicated was simple, practical and straightforward. He looked to Christ as his leader and tried to translate the Gospel message into concrete results. Vincent preached to rich and poor alike. He founded hospitals, orphanages, food lines, housing assistance. Letters of St. Vincent de Paul reveal the religious spirit and practical genius of the man. He founded groups of priests, sisters, and lay persons to preach, teach and serve the poor in whom he found Jesus Christ at every turn, even when they were cantankerous. Vincent had a deep devotion to Christ in the Eucharist. This was a devotion that could take Christ forth and find and serve Him in the most needy and most deprived of the Children of God. He died on Sept. 27, 1660, and was canonized a saint in the Roman Catholic Church in 1737. The religious groups he founded continue to carry on his work. Several quotes of St. Vincent: However great the work that God may achieve by an individual, he must not indulge in self-satisfaction. He ought rather to be all the more humbled, seeing himself merely as a tool which God has made use of. We must love our neighbor as being made in the image of God and as an object of His love. Extend your mercy towards others, so that there can be no one in need whom you meet without helping. For what hope is there for us if God should withdraw His Mercy from us? The most powerful weapon to conquer the devil is humility. For, as he does not know at all how to employ it, neither does he know how to defend himself from it. It is our duty to prefer the service of the poor to everything else and to offer such service as quickly as possible. If a needy person requires medicine or other help during prayer time, do whatever has to be done with peace of mind. Offer the deed to God as your prayer. Charity is certainly greater than any rule. Moreover, all rules must lead to charity. The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, dedicated to the service of the poor, was established by French university students in 1833, led by the Blessed Frederic Ozanam who was profoundly inspired by St. Vincent. The Society is today present in 132 countries and has over 1,000,000 members that serve the poorest of the poor. We are very proud of our own St. Vincent de Paul Society and the tireless work the do for the poor in our area.

To lead others to Christ does not mean that you need to be quoting Scripture all the time or acting pious in front of others. What Jesus wants us to do is to live his teachings in the actions of our lives, by living in a Christ-like way, which has a positive influence on others.

Dear Parishioners of St. Johns, Thank you so much for your gifts, prayers, and continued support of Alex and our family. Alex is now stable and off of a ventilator. He is still in a coma and has not regained consciousness since the accident on August 18th, but he has made some progress with his reflexes and responses to stimuli. Alex didnt break any bones and all of his cuts are now healed. He has a strong body that heals quickly, but unfortunately the brain heals very slowly. We have hope with Gods help and your continuous support with prayer that Alex will gradually wake up and regain his abilities. Last week, he was released from Central DuPage Hospital pediatric intensive care unit and transferred to Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital in Wheaton. They will work to wake him from his coma and continue his long road of rehabilitation. Thank you again for your continued support during this difficult and challenging time. God Bless You,
-

Childrens Stewardship Corner
Liturgy of the Word for Children, Gather the Children, 9:30 a.m. Sunday Mass Were you curious about Gather the Children? Wondering what age group the liturgy is geared? Questioning whether you should you go with your child? Here are some answers! Children between the school ages of kindergarten and fifth grade are called forth by the presider at the beginning of Mass, then blessed. They follow the Minister of the Word to the chapel, where they sing and hear the reading in age appropriate language. The children return to the church for the beginning of the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Parents are always welcome, but do not have to go with their kindergartners through fifth graders. Preschoolers are welcome, too, but they must be accompanied by a parent. Questions? You can contact Kara Ladd, Director, Gather the Children, 630-876-4534 (call or text), kedrok99@att.net

Here are just a few of the many offerings to God from the youths of St. John the Baptist. WHEN YOU HAVE A CAR TO DONATE, YOU AUTO THINKSVDP! When you hear those radio ads encouraging the donation of your used car, please keep in mind that your car will most likely NOT be given to someone who can use it. Such cars are usually sold at auction or dismantled for the resale of their parts. That may serve the profit-purposes of a charitable organization. Yet its not very practical for people who have serious transportation needs, but cant afford to buy a car. On the other hand, when you donate your car to St. Vincent de Paul, once we have determined that it is safe and functional, we put it directly into the hands of a needy person or family, so it can be usedto drive to work, to go on family errands, or to meet the many other practical needs for getting around. We have no paper-work complications. And we have no large management salaries or administrative costs to pay. We simply serve the needy. So when youre ready to surrender your car, keep St. Vincent de Paul first on your list of options. Call 630-293-9755. Well pick up the car and get it into the hands of someone who can really use it.

Ask one of the priests following Mass, or call the parish office at 630-668-0918, ext. 600, and set a time to come in BEFORE your surgery for anointing.

Our priests are always available to make hospital visits. However, you or a family member must notify the St. Johns parish office of the confinement in the hospital. Also, remind the hospital that the name of the patient must be shown on the visitation sheet which is given to the priest when he makes his calls. We want to make sure our parishioners needs and requests are met, so please remember this when entering the hospital.
