Call meeting to order

After our meeting was called to order we we were able to do self-introductions with the 2o total people in attendance. We had 15 1st Year students and 5 2nd Year students. This included the following UPSA Officers & Chairs who were present: Cecil Laqui, President Sam Mesuro, Treasurer Andy Reker, Secretary Vanessa Quiroz, Jann Memorial Mentorship Chair a. Calendar Items to be posted to UPSA Google Calendar i. Welcome back party 10/5, 6:30pm to midnight We were able to reconfirm the UPSA Welcome Back party for all 1st and 2nd year MURPs and recent graduates of the MURP Program. We decided that the party will begin from 6:30pm at the Palo Verde Community Center in Palo Verde. It is at building 7000. Parking for commuters can be found at Lot 17A behind the international center & parking for noncommuters can be done through registration with Cecil Laqui. ii. Transit Advocates Meeting 10/18, 11:00 am 12:00 pm iii. OC Young Planners Group Happy Hour Social 10/18, 5:30 pm iv. Cal APA Conference Oct. 21-24 The Orange Section of the American Planning Association California Chapter has a scholarship for this state APA Conference which is due by Friday, October 12. For students who are interested in attending several days of the State APA Conference this is going to be

a great opportunity for students to network, learn about other student-proposed solutions to planning problems & also learn about the profession. v. MURP Recruitment Open House 10/24, 11:30 am The department is seeking volunteers to support an open house for MURP Recruitment later in October. vi. Alumni/Student Mixer @ Chakra 10/25, 6:00 8:00 pm An Alumni-Student mixer will be held at the University Town Center at Chakra Restaurant. For those participating in the UCI mentorship program this will be the first Mentorship program meeting as well. Fund raiser We are in need of promoting our fundraising. As a first proposal, wed like to finish selling the t-shirts UPSA 2011 created. Transit Advocates has also proposed a joint project to fundraise. TA + UPSA would purchase Boba to sell, on-campus. Action for both of these will be taken by one of the UPSA Chairs. ii. Graduate student researcher A $15.00 / hr Graduate Student Research position has opened up for the department. Primarily it will involve work with the recruitment efforts of the PPD Department. Contact person for this opportunity is Janet Gallagher (jgallagher@uci.edu).

iii. Department promotional poster & video The Department is seeking to develop promotional materials including a poster and video. Theyve asked UPSA to put out the feelers to see if there is anyone interested in helping promote the UCI PPD Department. There was no deadlines shared but they would like to seek the help of students in developing materials for the department. Please contact Professor Basolo for further comments. iv. Officer handbooks For UPSA succession planning, we had a short discussion about what method to use. Google Docs was settled as the main way to maintain a repository of succession documents for the time being. c. Engagement and feedback i. SketchUp and Google Earth workshop dates The OC APA has generously offered to fund two Planetizen video courses on Google SketchUp and Google Earth. We need your feedback on best days and times. There would be a series of weekday days that we would like to host an event like this. From pulling consensus from the crowd of 20: Tuesdays 4pm seem to be the best time. d. Officer Reports i. Andrew Reker Secretary The UPSA Newsletter should have gone out earlier this summer. This newsletter will serve the purpose of connecting students on another level. Our next date for call for articles will be November 2nd. For more information please contact Andrew Reker (areker@uci.edu). ii. Samantha Mesuro Treasurer Financially, were in a pretty good state; however, we do need to start working on fundraising. iii. Vanessa Quiroz Mentorship Chair
