ChE 182 DESIGN PROJECT (groups of 3) 1. Define a process to be controlled.

Submit it for approval to your ChE 182 Laboratory Instructor. Unapproved proposals will not be graded. Your proposal must contain the following: a. Plant process flow diagram from your ChE 141 class (highlight your selected process) b. Control objectives c. Mass and energy balance calculations for the selected process Define two control loops. For each control loop, define your controlled, manipulated, and disturbance variables. Derive the transfer functions relating the controlled to the manipulated variable and the controlled to the disturbance variable. Develop your control system. Find an appropriate: a. Sensor/transmitter b. Transducer (if any) c. Final control element Define the parameters for each of the element in your two control systems (e.g. span, zero, gain, time constant, time delays, etc.). You have to do research on this. Provide references for your data. Implement your control systems in Simulink. For a PI controller, determine the controller settings using the following: a. Direct synthesis b. IMC tuning relations c. Frequency response analysis (Ziegler-Nichols and Tyreus-Luyben) i. Create the necessary plots: Bode plots Nyquist plots ii. Analyze the robustness of the process Plot the response of your control systems given a unit step change in the manipulated input variable for each controller setting in 7. You should have the responses from the settings computed from 7a, 7b, 7c.1 (Ziegler-Nichols), and 7c.2 (Tyreus-Luyben). Plot the response of your control system given a unit step change in the disturbance input variable for each controller setting in 7. You should have responses from the settings computed from 7a, 7b, 7c.1 (Ziegler-Nichols), and 7c.2 (Tyreus-Luyben).
