A word from Pastor Chuck and Spiritual Formation Team Chair Rachel Hammer
7

Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by always having enough of everything, you may share abundantly in every good work. 2 Corinthians 9:7-8 Dear sisters and brothers in Christ, +Peace+ Congregations that approach financial stewardship from a biblical perspective do not view the money Christians give to their church merely as a way to pay bills. Rather, such congregations see financial contributions as a way to help people grow spiritually in their relationship with God by supporting their churchs mission and ministry with a percentage of their incomes. Our congregations Spiritual Formation Team has adapted the New Consecration Sunday Stewardship Program as a way to teach the biblical and spiritual principles of generous giving in our stewardship education emphasis this year at Old Trinity. New Consecration Sunday is based on the biblical theological recognition that Christians need to give in order to develop spiritually, rather than on our churchs need to receive. Instead of treating people like members of a social club who should pay dues, we will treat the people of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church as followers of Jesus Christ who want to give unselfishly as an act of discipleship. New Consecration Sunday encourages people toward proportionate and systematic giving in response to the question: What percentage of my income is God calling me to give? During morning worship on Consecration Sunday, we will ask members and others in attendance to make their financial commitments to our churchs mission: Sharing the Word of God through worship and teaching with love and service in our congregation and our community. Worshippers will complete an Estimate of Giving Card voluntarily on the weekend of Consecration Sunday, October 14th. We also urge people who feel strongly opposed to completing a card to worship with us. The procedure is done in such a way that no one feels personal embarrassment if he or she chooses not to fill out a card. We will send Estimate of Giving Cards by mail to those who do not submit them during worship on October 14th, but well make no further solicitation. During morning worship on Consecration Sunday we will offer a brief period of instruction and inspiration, ending with members of making their commitments as a confidential act of worship. Since we will make no follow-up visits to ask people to complete their cards, we will make every effort to inform, inspire, and commit everyone to attend worship on Consecration Sunday. Thanks in advance for your enthusiastic participation in Consecration Sunday events. Rejoicing with you in following Jesus,

Pastor Chuck Peterson

Rachel Hammer, Spiritual Formation Team Chair Thank you, Ministry Fair participants Thank you to everyone who participated in our September 9 Rally Day Ministry Fair, either by providing or staffing a display table or by visiting the event. The Fair is a great opportunity to review the breadth and variety of service and social opportunities at Trinity. It also helps promote involvement as we launch a new season of activities. Every member and friend is encouraged to become involved in one or more of these activities.

Meet Ruth Myers If youve been to services at Old Trinity, youve probably met Ruth. Ruth Myers has been a member at Old Trinity for more than 96 years. My mother went here, back when it was a German-speaking church, Ruth said. When she got my dad to join, he became very active in the church, participating in church council and evangelism. Her mother was a member. Her father was a member. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity. I used to take the street car down to Broad and High twice a week to come to catechism classes. She remembers picnics in Schiller Park and brotherhood dinners that she would help serve. And at one point, she was the only woman in the mens prayer group because she would take her father. These days, Ruth spends a lot of time with her two nephews and her niece, Beth, who brings her to church. Ruth is also a big Ohio State fan. In fact, shes always happy to show others the Buckeyes tattoo on her forearm which she got at age 95! Ruth has seen a lot of change within the walls of Trinity, but she is a constant and is also willing to offer a welcoming smile. Next time you see her, be sure to say hello.

Community Ministry Team

The Community Ministry Team met on 9-4-2012. Present were: Gretchen Brandt, Janet Walston, Neal Coryell, Robert Neymeyer, Pastor Peterson, Rita Hunter, and Mary Roberts. Gretchen reported that Trinitys first Red Cross Blood Drive was a big success. We had 13 people donate and numerous individuals volunteered but for health reason were not able to donate. A BIG THANK YOU to Gretchen for all her efforts. Trinity is looking in hosting another drive in the near future. The Corinthian Fund guidelines will written by Mary Roberts with the help from Pastor Peterson. It was decided that three members of Trinity will be on that team; Pastor Peterson, the Community Ministry Chair Person, and Congregational Life Chair Person. Community Ministry held their second breakfast meeting for Downtown Churches helping the homeless. We had about 22 people representing about 15 churches/ organizations. It was decided to hold this meeting monthly; every third Monday of the month at 9AM. Other Churches already have stepped up to host a meeting. Trinity hopes that this will be an ongoing and growing committee to collaborate and identify needs to serve the homeless population better. Community Ministry Team also decided to put the word out to start a L.O.V.E. group. The letters stand for Let Our Voices Emerge. The purpose of this group would be to take our pledge to be a RIC Church (Reconciliation in Christ) to the next level. Further information will be coming soon.

COLUMBUS MARATHON - SUNDAY, OCTOBER 21st

Suggestions for the Trinity Tidings are always welcome

Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church is a Reconciling in Christ Congregation. The members of Trinity Lutheran Church recognize that God loves, Forgives, and calls each of us unconditionally and that every human being is created in the image of God. As a result, we welcome all people into our community of faith and invite them to join us as we seek to understand Gods love for us and struggle to be faithful messengers of that love in the world. Although our world is a place of alienation and brokenness, Christ calls us to reconciliation and wholeness. In response, we join hands with all our sisters and brothers, grateful for the unique gifts that each of us has to offer, regardless of our race, age, gender identity, marital status, physical and mental abilities, sexual orientation, national origin, or economic status. We celebrate together both the diversity of Gods creation and our unity as Gods people.
