Q: I recently inherited a teddy
bear that was first given to a distant

has a hump on its back and its
original leather collar. I have
found similar ones in price guides
and think the one I have could be

The first teddy bears were
produced in the United States in
about 1902 and were named in
honor of Theodore Roosevelt. The
earliest stuffed bears were made of
mohair and had elongated muzzles,

jointed limbs and humps on their
backs. The stuffing was generally
excelsior with eyes made of either
glass with pin back or black show
buttons. Noses and mouths are
often black and embroidered onto

the fabric.
These first American bears are

Alfred, NY, January 2009- Officials at Alfred State College
have been notified that an anonymous donor has presented the
Canandaigua Salvation Army Advisory Board with the
opportunity to fund a college scholarship for the next four years.
The recipient of the Salvation Army Advisory Board Scholarship
will be eligible for up to one full year of tuition at Alfred State
College. The scholarship will be awarded to a student pursuing
a degree in the fields of nursing or human services. The donor
will make payment directly to the institution.
In order to qualify for the scholarship, applicants must be in
their senior year of high school, possess a GED, or currently be
enrolled as a student at Alfred State College. Additionally,
applicants must be admitted into either nursing or human
services at Alfred State College; be ranked in the upper 50
percent of their class; demonstrate positive relationships with
other students, contribute to the community, and demonstrate a
good work ethic; and demonstrate financial need.
Interested applicants should forward two letters of
recommendation: one academic reference from a teacher/
instructor and one character reference and an essay not to
exceed 500 words in which the student describes him/herself
and explains why he/she wishes to pursue a career in the chosen
field of study. The essay should include a statement of need and
any community volunteer service.
A student receiving this award may reapply for a second
year award by submitting a recommendation from a college
adviser or an instructor in their major field and a transcript of
their grades.
The recipient of the scholarship will be determined by a
committee consisting of the donor, a member of the Salvation
Army Advisory Board, and one of the commanding officers.
Applications should be submitted to Alfred State College,
Attn: Colleen Argentieri, Office of Institutional Advancement, 10
Upper College Drive, Alfred, NY 14802, no later than May 1.
Non-traditional students may use a GED in place of a high
school diploma and/or any transcripts from an academic
institution he/she attended and one character reference. The
applicant should submit the essay as described for high school
seniors.
