Crossroads Motorcycle Rally
of Vermont is held in Farrs

Barre Elks Golf Tournament Benefits Silver Towers Camp
On Saturday September 22nd, members and
friends of Barre Lodge #1535 held a golf tourna-
ment to benefit Silver Towers Camp for People
with Disabilites. The tournament was held at the
Barre Country Club and raised $500.
Silver Towers Camp is the chief charitable
project of the Vermont Elks Association, which
has owned and operated Silver Towers since
1958. Silver Towers was one of the first of its
kind in the United States, and still remains one of
the very few.
An overnight retreat for those with mental or
physical challenges, the camp demands more
focused attention than others, and thus has a high
ratio of counselors to campers to accommodate
the special needs of the campers.

Wayne Helliwell Jr. took an eight point lead into Sundays ACT
final at Airborne Speedway and added a little frosting to his first career
championship run winning the Fall Foliage 200 over a hard charging
Austin Theriault and Patrick Laperle at Airborne Speedway on Sunday
afternoon. Brian Hoar and Joey Polewarczyk finished fourth and fifth,
respectively. Second-place point man Brian Hoar and Helliwell lined
up nose to tail to start the feature that ran the first 49 laps without a
caution. Helliwell had worked his way to the front earning a five point
bonus for leading a lap, while Hoar stalked him through the field.
When a second caution came out on lap 62, Hoar showed his hand,
ducking into pit road for fresh tires and dropping to the back of the
pack. The fourth caution of the 200-lap event flew on Lap 87 bringing
race leader Helliwell, Theriault, and Joey Polewarczyk, Jr. on pit road
for tires. A handful of laps later, the tide had turned as Hoars familiar
#37 assumed the lead, and it was Helliwells turn to fight through traf-
fic. With 37 circuits to go, Helliwell dove underneath for the point,
and the pair traded the lead several times in a duel for the champion-
ship. Helliwell exposed his emotional side in Victory Lane. We had
so much pressure coming in here, I just cant believe it, said
Helliwell. There are so many things running through my head, this is
just unbelievable. Randy Potter, Jimmy Hebert, Brent Dragon, Ray
Parent, and Nick Sweet completed the top ten.
Matt Kenseth emerged from a last lap slugfest, rising like the
Phoenix in victory, to win Sundays Talladega melee when Tony
Stewarts last turn maneuver to block a hard charging Michael Waltrip
wiped out the field. Daytona 500 winner Matt Kenseth won under
caution, and everyone else was left wondering what happened to cause
so much carnage. Its not safe. Its not. Its bloodthirsty, Dale
Earnhardt Jr. said. If thats what people want, thats ridiculous.
Stewart, like a champion took full responsibility for causing the
calamity. I just screwed up. I turned down and cut across Michael
and crashed the whole field, Stewart said. It was my fault, blocking
and trying to stay where I was at. I was trying to win the race and I
was trying to stay ahead of Matt there and Michael got a great run on
the bottom and had a big head of steam, and when I turned down, I
turned across the front of his car. Just a mistake on my part but cost a
lot of people a bad day. Jeff Gordon was scored in second-place and
Kyle Busch in third, but NASCAR was sorting the final order almost
two hours after the finish.
Driving a truck team owner Tom DeLoach described as magic,
Parker Kligerman finally shed the bridesmaid tag, winning Saturdays
Freds 250 at Talladega Superspeedway under caution after nearly half
of the remaining NASCAR Camping World Truck Series field
wrecked behind him. Johnny Sauter pushed Kligerman to the lead on
the white-flag lap, and Kligerman held the top spot when a massive
wreck on the backstretch forced NASCAR to throw the yellow before
Kligerman reached the finish line. The victory was Kligermans first
after five second-place finishes over the last two seasons. It was a
vindication of sorts for a driver who was jettisoned from his ride with
Brad Keselowski Racing and found a new home with Red Horse
Racing. When you get so close to something so many times, you can
pick two paths, Kligerman said of his second-place runs. You can
doubt yourself, you can doubt the situation youre in, you can doubt
everything around you. Or you can keep your self-confidence and look
at the positive of what you did to get yourself in that position each and
every time and say, Hey, if I can do that, its just a matter of time. I
feel like switching teams -- all the things that have happened -- this
team gave me a ton of confidence. Halfway through the season, it
looked like my career was not on the upward slope Id hoped it would
be on. We were fifth in points, we werent really achieving a lot, we
were getting slower as a team, and I felt like my career was looking at
a position where I was not going to be a part of NASCAR much lon-
ger. . . . There is a vindication cause we won. Winning fixes every-
thing, I like to say. The truck Kligerman drove now has been to
Victory Lane in three superspeedway races. Sauter ran second, fol-
lowed by James Buescher and Ty Dillon. Timothy Peters came home
fifth. Dillon maintained a one-point lead over Buescher in the series
standings.
Garage Garble
As was discussed during a Saturday morning meeting with drivers
and crew chiefs at Talladega Superspeedway, NASCAR is expected to
drop the rule that provides guaranteed starting positions in Sprint Cup
races to the top 35 in owner points, starting next year. Instead, the
sanctioning body is expected to return to the sort of provisional system
that characterized the qualifying format before the top-35 rule was
introduced. Also under consideration is a return to a random drawing
for qualifying order. Currently, qualifying order is set by the top
speeds registered in the first Cup practice session, with the slowest car
going out first and the fastest qualifying last. Under this system, teams
often manipulate or sandbag practice speeds to ensure a qualifying
draw they consider advantageous. NASCAR officials said an
announcement should be forthcoming later this month, probably
within the next seven to 10 days. Now qualifying will mean something
again. but why did it take NASCAR all these years to get its head
out of its butt?
Hard to believe but sixteen consecutive weekends of racing in the
NASCAR Nationwide Series effectively settled nothing. When the
three-plus month odyssey began in mid-June Elliott Sadler led reign-
ing champion Ricky Stenhouse Jr. by 12 points with Sunoco Rookie
of the Year contender Austin Dillon trailing by 14 in third. And now!
After multiple twists, turns and lead changes its Sadler by 9 over
Stenhouse with Dillon 25 points out. Five races remain on the sched-
ule beginning with a hometown event on Oct. 13 at Charlotte Motor
Speedway. The battle between Sadler and Stenhouse is destined to go
down to the wire with both having victories at upcoming tracks on the
schedule. Sadler won earlier this season at Phoenix International
Raceway while Stenhouse took home the trophy at Texas Motor
Speedway.
AJ Allmendinger upped his effort to find a new job on Friday by
making his first appearance at a NASCAR event since his suspension
for failing a NASCAR drug test. Allmendingers return, where he was
greeted by hugs from many of his old teammates at Penske as well as
Richard Petty Motorsport, to Talladega Superspeedway is the first
since his July 7 suspension. He was reinstated by NASCAR last month
and is looking for a job for 2013 after being dropped by Penske Racing
three months ago following the failed drug test. Im looking, but
from reading the Internet, there doesnt seem to be a lot of jobs out
there, Allmendinger said.
Next Lap
A powerful rainstorm forced the postponement of the 50th Annual
Peoples United Bank Milk Bowl on Sunday September 30. The sea-
son-ending event, which has posted record awards of over $160,000
will run this Sunday with a post time of 1:00pm. Two-time Thunder
Road Champion David Pembroke will try to take a crack at the
$50,000 bonus for winning all three segments from the Booth
Brothers Pole Position that he earned through time trials on Saturday.
2011 Milk Bowl Champion Brian Hoar will duel him from the outside
of the front row, followed by 2012 King of the Road Nick Sweet,
Maine star Austin Theriault, and multi-time Thunder Road Champion
Cris Michaud. Barres own Cody Blake will roll off sixth, North
Haverhill, NHs Travis Fadden seventh, and Joey Polewarczyk, Jr.,
Trampas Demers, and Brooks Clark will round out the top ten. The
Bond Auto Tiger Sportsmen will settle their tight Championship
finale as second place point man Bobby Therrien sent a message to his
competitors with a first segment win He, along with second place
finisher Jason Allen, point leader Brendan Moodie, Jr. who finished
third, and fourth-place finisher Shawn Fleury, will have to make their
way from the rear of the field to settle the Tiger edition of Vermonts
Great race.
Its on to race # 5 in the 2012 Chase for the Sprint Cup as
NASCARs elite stay home at Charlotte Motor Speedway for the 53rd
Annual Bank of America 500 on Saturday night (ABC 7:00 p.m.) .
The 2011 version on the 1.5-mile quad-oval was won by Matt Kenseth.
Kyle Busch finished second ahead of Carl Edwards in third. CMS is
one of the king-pin venues in NASCARs tough 36 race schedule. The
tracks turns are banked at twenty-four degrees, while the front stretch,
the location of the finish line, is five degrees. The back stretch, oppo-
site of the front, also had a five degree banking. The racetrack has
seats for 140,000 spectators.
The ole rumor mill is churning around Northern New England
about the upcoming Fall Brawl 200 at recently touted All-New
Riverside Speedway. Drivers from Riverside, Thunder Road, ACT,
WMMP, and Oxford have all verbally committed to attend the tracks
last Late Model event on October 20th, and drivers and fans alike are
excited. Drivers like Helliwell, Polewarczyk, Potter, and Welch have
committed, and the interest is still coming in. Thunder Road competi-
tor Chip Grenier has announced he will attend the event, along with
local racer Derek Ming, and a former Riverside Speedway champ Ken
Dufour has purchased a Late Model and will strap in at the Groveton
high banks to battle it out as well. There are six former or current
Riverside late model champs that will be duking it out, including
Potter, Dufour, Bryan and Corey Mason, Jeff Marshall, and Luke
Shannon. 2012 FAS Lane Racing Ford NASCAR driver Mike Olsen
has been named Grand Marshall for the Fall Brawl 200. Olsen,
grandson of the late short track racer Stub Fadden, is also the uncle of
Kingdom Embroidery Daredevil
driver Matthew Kopp. Olsen was
the 2001 and 2006 champ in
what is now the K & N Pro
Series East, and won the 2005
Toyota All-Star Showdown.
Recently, the North Haverhill,
New Hampshire native climbed
behind the wheel of Frank
Stoddards Sprint Cup ride at
Loudon, sponsored by local busi-
ness North Country Ford, and
raced with some of the nations
finest wheelmen. New track les-
see Dan Fournier, a well-heeled
and respected local businessman
has vowed to take the track to
new heights and will begin that
climb with two 2012 season clos-
ing events before jumping in
with both feet in 2013.

(MS) -- Given the turbulent economic news, consumers are
tightening their belts and cutting back on spending. Delaying
or ignoring routine automotive service is no exception, but a
bad decision, according to the experts at the non-prot Na-
tional Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).
Car care extends the life of your vehicle and can prevent
minor problems from growing into much more expensive
issues. Worn brake pads, if ignored, can escalate into more
costly rotor repairs. A check-engine light may signal
something as minor as the need to replace an inexpensive
oxygen sensor. But if ignored, costly damage to the catalytic
converter can ensue.
Nor should service intervals be ignored. Failure to change
out the engines timing belt according to the owners manu-
als schedule can result in major engine damage if the belt
fails. Must less dramatic
are routine things such as
scheduled oil changes, re-
placing dirty lters, or sim-
ply paying attention to tire
pressure. These seemingly
minor services help you get
better gas mileage.
ASE -- the group that
tests and certies automo-
tive technicians -- offers the
following tips on locating a
good repair shop:
* Start shopping for a repair
facility before you need
one.
* Ask your friends and as-
sociates for recommenda-
tions; consult local con-
sumer groups.
* Arrange for transporta-
tion so you will not choose
a shop based merely on lo-
cation.
* Look for a well-organized
facility, with vehicles in the
parking lot equal in value
to your own and modern
equipment in the service
bays.
* The staff should be cour-
teous and willing to answer
your questions.
* Look for policies on estimated repair costs, diagnostic
fees, guarantees, and methods of payment.
* Look for signs of professionalism such as civic, commu-
nity or customer service awards.
* Look for evidence of qualied technicians: trade school
diplomas, certicates of advanced course work and certi-
cation by ASE.
* And look for the blue and white ASE sign.
* For major jobs ask whether the repair facility usually han-
dles your type of repair work.
Visit the ASE Web site at www.ase.com for seasonal car-
care tips and information on why motorists should looks for
repair facilities that employ ASE-certied automotive tech-
nicians.
