Council discusses rework oversight

By Jerry LaVaute
Special Writer

In response to residents concerns, the Belleville city attorney drafted a new ordinance for fire safety standards within the city. The fireworks ordinance for the state of Michigan was relaxed recently in some areas, and the new local ordinance is an attempt to better control the process each holiday and ensure safety. Council members discussed portions of the new ordinance and a date for a public hearing, but didnt reach any decisions. As a result, Mayor Kerreen Conley deferred further discussion for a few weeks. Some of the difficulty stemmed from how the various types of fireworks are defined, and how the ordinance applies to each. Some terms used are Consumer Fireworks, designed to produce visible effects by combustion, Display Fireworks, explosive materials intended for use in fireworks displays, and Low Impact Fireworks, including ground and handheld sparkling devices.

Township plans 3 new sewer pump stations

By Jerry LaVaute

Van Buren Township residents will have three new sanitary sewer pump stations to replace three aging stations first built more than 30 years ago. The locations where the pumps will be replaced are North Shore Drive, Ryznar Drive and the Haggerty Road station north of Savage Road. The first two locations are near Belleville Lake. The three pump stations were selected for replacement after a DPW study. Public Works Director Tom MacDonald said that the station at Haggerty Road is often being repaired.

Were here with family, friends and neighbors, she said. We can kind of stop the crazy parts of our lives and really get together and enjoy what makes life in Belleville wonderful. Feedback for the annual harvest festival has been positive, she said, and it shows through attendance. Over the last 10 years or so the growth of activity in town has been substantial, Thompson said. A large number of groups in the area come together each fall and it just keeps growing in population and size. Thats not limited to just the Harvest Fest. Thompson said more events have popped up that have turned Downtown Belleville into a bustling community year-round. There are groups who are hosting events in the downtown area more than 75 days a year now, she said. Theyre put on by the people of the community for the people of the community.
