FIELD OVERVIEW

Social innovation is the ecosystem where new and innovative solutions to our globalsocietys greatest problems are discovered and implemented. Economists in the social innovation ecosystem are changing the way we solve our biggest social problems. Having mastery of statistical analysis programs, economic theories, and research methods make economists incredibly powerful in advancing social good: from designing more effective methods of delivering bed nets to uncovering the true impact of charter schools on graduation rates, the skills of an economist are capable of crunching more than just supply and demand.

MODEL IN THE FIELD

Esther Duflo - Abdul Latif Jameel is a Professor of Poverty Alleviation and Development Economics in the Department of Economics at MIT and a founder and director of the Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL).

CLASSES

Professor Duflos Center of Economic Policy Research evaluates development projects on economic efficiency and total impact. Her research focuses on microeconomic issues in developing countries, including household behavior, education, access to finance, health and policy evaluation. She recently co-published the book, Poor Economics, which has helped rebuff major myths in development policy and forward evidence-based innovations for improving how aid is delivered in developing countries.
