Meet Our Mascot:

PAI YAO
Pi XiuPai Yao

www.wgm8.com/PaiYao. php Pai Yao is our o cial mascot and the leader of the World Gaming gang. Read more about Pai Yao at www.wgm8.com/PaiYao.php

His name is Pi Xiu in Mandarin, and Pai Yao in Cantonese. The ninth son of The Dragon, he is one of the ve auspicious animals of traditional Chinese culture. This lion-looking animal has the head of a dragon, the body of a horse and the legs of a kylin (another animal from Chinese mythology). Pai Yao is ferocious and powerful, and can y. He works as a security guard of Heaven, resisting demons and ghosts. Pai Yao violated a law of heaven, so the Jade Emperor punished him by restricting his diet to gold, silver and other precious gems. The Jade Emporer also sealed the other end of Pai Yaos body, preventing anything coming out! So Pai Yao can absorb gold, but cannot expel it. Chinese people regard Pai Yao as an auspicious creature capable of drawing Cai Qi (wealth) from all directions. For this reason, many Chinese people wear jade Pai Yaos. Pai Yao statues are often seen at casinos as a way of receiving and keeping fortune. Feng Shui experts say that Pai Yaos can protect homes, exorcise devils and raise fortune and power for their master. There is a saying: touch a Pai Yao once and you will get good luck, twice you will get money and treasure, and the third time you will get power and position. World Gamings Pai Yao will guide you on your gaming and betting journey, and we hope he brings as much good fortune to you as he has to others over the centuries!

Yet, this multi-billion dollar king of all games is little understood by many. In our March/April 2010 issue, World Gaming published a detailed explanation on how to squeeze the cards when playing baccarat. We were met with an overwhelming response from players and even industry professionals who were delighted to finally have a thorough explanation of what all that squeezing, twisting and general mangling of the playing cards was all about.

Baccarat is a serious passion for many millions of people in Asia and around the globe. Last year 23 million people visited Macau, creating a gross gaming revenue of HK$184 billion (US$24 billion). Around 90 percent of this was on the game of baccarat, with all other games combined accounting for just 10 percent.

FATE IN THE CARDS: UNDERSTANDING BACCARAT TRENDS

Were going to do it again, but for something even more mysterious, confusing and hidden: the art of following baccarat trends. Experienced baccarat players know, understand, and love these trends. When I started research for this article, I asked many industry friends if they understood the red and blue baccarat trends shown on each baccarat tables electronic display. Many had been working in the industry for decades. Without exception, they all said something like, The top and the bottom trends are easy, but the three in the middle are really complicated. To be honest even I dont understand them. But the big players love them and swear by them! So now, for the benefit of our readers who do not understand or would like to understand better, World Gaming presents to you the art of following baccarat trends. HISTORY Many think Stanley Ho brought baccarat to Macau, but actually it was first introduced by Tai Heng company, who won the monopoly Macau casino concession in 1937 and held it for 25 years. In 1962, STDM was granted the monopoly concession for 40 years. Of course STDM continues to this day, with 17 Macau casinos still under its umbrella including Grand Lisboa and Lisboa. The company had four founding fathers: Mr Ip Hon, Mr Terry Ip Tak Lei, Mr Stanley Ho and Mr Henry Fok. Mr Ip Hon had seen baccarat in the US and it was decided that STDM would offer two baccarat tables. As they say, the rest is history. Baccarat flourished over time and eventually became the dominant Macau casino game it is today. Players have always looked for trends and patterns in the streaks of banker wins and player wins. At first, these streaks were recorded on paper. In fact, this is part of how the position of VIP host came to exist. It was the responsibility of the VIP host to record the winning side (banker or player) each hand. VIP players could refer to these past trends when deciding what their bet should be. METHODS OF RECORDING Baccarat results and trends were initially recorded on paper cards, like this:

FATE IN THE CARDS: UNDERSTANDING BACCARAT TRENDS

To this day some players prefer to use paper and pen. The red circles on the card represent banker wins and the blue circles represent player wins. I remember which colour is which by remembering that the name of the colour (red or blue) must not start with the same letter as the name of the corresponding winning side (banker or player). So banker must be red, not blue. Well delve into the deeper meaning of these circles later.
The next breakthrough was the invention of a device known in Chinese as (pronounced zhu pan in Mandarin and zu pun in Cantonese). This name literally means bead plate but I guess cube tray is probably a better name for it in English. This tray is always six rows in height, but can vary in width. It contains cubes with sides of four di erent colours: white for blank, red for banker, blue for player, and green for tie. Heres a picture:

cube road()dice road()marker road ()bead plate road ()baby pig road :

The bead plate has many alternative names in English, such as cube road, dice road, marker road, bead plate road and even baby pig road (a direct translation of another Chinese name for it). Later well explain how the bead plate is used, and the signi cance of the word road.

These days, most players have discarded paper cards and the bead plate, because now all baccarat tables in major casinos have electronic displays attached to them, like this:

The beauty of these electronic displays is they show all in the information that was recorded on paper and the bead plate, and often much more. They do this instantaneously and without error because they are directly connected to automatic card reading shoes. There is no effort on the part of the casino staff or the players, and the full suite of trend information is at the players fingertips at any time. In this article, we use pictures from an electronic display, since its now the most common way of keeping track of baccarat results and trends. LETS GET THIS SHOW ON THE ROAD Baccarat trends are recorded on roads, which are pictorial representations of the results and trends of the shoe so far. The roads help players quickly assess the history of the game, identify trends and attempt to predict future results. There are five standard roads: 1. The Big Road 2. Big Eye Boy (sometimes called big eye road) 3. The Small Road 4. The Cockroach Road (yes, cockroach road!) 5. The Bead Plate (sometimes called bead plate road) Pretty crazy names, huh? Each road uses coloured symbols arranged in a rectangular grid of empty white squares called cells. The standard height of any roads grid is six cells (although at the time of writing this article Galaxy Macau is using a non-standard grid height for the cockroach road). The width of any road is not very important, and can be considered to go on indefinitely. Roads only record the current shoe. At the end of each shoe, the screen is cleared and new roads are built from scratch. Below is an electronic baccarat display at the start of a shoe before any hands are dealt. You can see the positions of all five roads on the screen.

Different displays in different casinos have slight differences, but the basic pattern is the same. The big road is big and usually across the top of the screen. The bead plate (actually called the marker road in figure 1 which is one of its alternative names) is at the bottom left (although sometimes it can be at the very top above the big road, as it is at Venetian Macau). The big road and the bead plate are similar in nature in that they both directly record the results of the shoe so far, in a simple manner. Big eye boy, the small road and the cockroach road are much more complex than the big road and the bead plate. Collectively those three roads are called derived roads (well explain that in more detail later). The derived roads are below the big road, always with big eye boy above the small road on the left, and the cockroach road on the right. Normally big eye boy, the small road and the cockroach road use symbols of half a cells height and width, so three rows of cells can fit six symbols vertically, and the standard rule of each road being six symbols in height is maintained. Notice on the display shown in figure 1 cockroach road is shown as seven rows in height, which is unusual. Normally it would be three rows in height (with symbols taking up half a row each, effectively making it six rows in height). And youre wondering what that other two-column-three-row grid over on the right is, arent you? Well, thats called the prediction table, but we have a long way to go before we get to that! THE BIG ROAD At first, baccarat results were just recorded on the big road. This is the main road and it is the road that all other roads are derived from. The big road is sometimes called the big trail or the big trend in English, but the more precise translation of the Chinese name is big road. The big road is fairly simple. It is a grid, always six rows deep by many columns wide (Ive seen as few as 36 columns and as many as 50 columns, but it doesnt really matter). When recording the big road, a hollow red circle represents a banker win, and a hollow blue circle represents a player win. When the shoe begins, the first result (banker or player, ignore ties for now) is written in the top left corner of the big road. If the second result is the same side as the first, it goes under the first, and as long as the winning side (banker or player) remains the same, circles of the same colour continue down vertically. When the other side wins, a new column is started, and the process continues through the entire shoe in this fashion. As a result, the big road becomes a series of columns of alternating blue and red hollow circles, with a minimum height of one circle, and no maximum height. Each time the result changes sides between banker and player, a new column is used, so each column corresponds to a run or streak, allowing easy comparison of the length of streaks. To add to the confusion, the Chinese word for road (which is , pronounced lu in Mandarin or lo in Cantonese) is also used as the Chinese word for run or streak, but the context in which it is used makes it clear whether the speaker is referring to a single run of banker or player, or an entire road.

FATE IN THE CARDS: UNDERSTANDING BACCARAT TRENDS

There are some finer points for the big road. Ties are not displayed as a separate circle, but simply as a green line drawn across the most recent circle drawn. Multiple ties give rise to multiple lines across the circle, or some displays show a small number next to the green line with that number representing the number of ties. If a tie comes up before there has been any banker or player result yet in the shoe, the green tie line is drawn in the very top left cell in the grid, and then when the first banker or player result is known, that circle is written in the same cell under the tie line. This means if you see a tie line over the circle in the very top left corner of the grid, you dont know whether the tie came before or after the first banker or player. For all other green lines the tie came after the hand represented by the circle the line crosses. Pairs are displayed with a dot on the edge of the circle (red dot for banker pair, blue dot for player pair). On some displays, natural winners are displayed with a yellow dot in the middle of the circle. It all sounds confusing, but its easy to understand when you look at figure 2, which shows this sequence of events: banker win, player win, player (with natural), player, banker, banker, player (with player pair), player (with banker pair), banker, tie. Precisely ten hands have been played in the shoe. In the very unlikely event t h e b i g ro a d r u n s o u t o f columns, the road simply scrolls to the left and the results in the leftmost column drop off the display. Figure 2: The big road PING PONG Ping pong is an expression which describes having a run of alternating bankers and players. Some players refer to a run of two bankers alternating with two players as double ping pong. FOLLOW THE DRAGON An obvious question is, what happens if there are more than six bankers or players in a row, and the display runs out of room vertically? This is the type of situation baccarat players love! The streak simply turns right when it hits the bottom of the grid and continues along the bottom row. Once the streak has turned right, it creates a pattern known as the dragon. Most baccarat players agree that if a dragon appears, you should bet on it, hence the catchphrase, follow the dragon. Of course the longer any dragon is, the better.

DOUBLE DRAGON If a streak happens to bump into a dragon along the bottom of the big road, it immediately turns right (no matter which row it is in), and creates a new dragon. Some players refer to this situation as a double dragon. In the highly unlikely (and happy) event that there are so many dragons on the big road that it all becomes confusing, you might notice there are very fine, almost imperceptible, connecting lines between the circles on the electronic display, so you know which circle is connected to which. Note the very slight lines connecting the circles in figure 4. If the second dragon continues it would go on to the right indefinitely. Most displays dont drop the second dragon down if it gets longer than the first dragon. THE BEAD PLATE The bead plate is an exact electronic representation of what the cubes in the tray would show had an actual physical bead plate or cube Figure 4: A dragon of 10 bankers at the very start tray been used. Once again, of the shoe, immediately red means banker, blue followed by another means player and green dragon of seven players! means tie, and the symbols used are solid coloured circles superimposed with a Chinese character representing the result. The first symbol appears in the top left corner of the grid and the road fills down vertically through all six cells of the column, before moving to the second column and those six cells are filled in, and so on. There is no moving to a new column until the previous column is filled, irrespective of the result of each hand.

The bead plate in figure 5 shows the exact same sequence of ten hands as the big road in figure 2. Note that the bead plate does not show naturals or pairs, but unlike the big road it does show ties as a separate symbol occupying a cell in the grid. THE DERIVED ROADS This is where things started to get interesting. It wasnt until after STDMs flagship Casino Lisboa opened in 1970, that big eye boy, the small road and the cockroach road were invented. Collectively, these three roads are called the derived roads. Some people also refer to them as predictive roads. The three derived roads were invented in Macau, but have now spread across Asia and the world. Youll even see these roads on electronic betting terminals and online baccarat. While the big road and the bead plate are intuitive and quite simple to understand, the derived roads are not. Most people who do understand the derived roads agree that it took quite a while before the penny dropped. Coming to understand these roads and how to use them can be a frustrating journey. But once you do, you can impress your fellow players with your thorough knowledge of these complicated baccarat trendfollowing systems! The history behind these roads is murky. If anyone can add to what I know, Id love to hear it. I am told the small road (which in Chinese is , pronounced xiao lu in Mandarin and siu lo in Cantonese) was initially invented by a Mr Chan Kuen back in the early 1970s, in the early days of the Casino Lisboa. Not long after, in the mid 1970s, it seems Lisboa dealer Chao Hon Mun adapted the small road to create a new road. Apparently Chao Hon Mun had big eyes, and his new road became known as big eye boy, which in Chinese is (pronounced in da yan zai Mandarin and dai ngan jai in Cantonese). Later, someone adapted big eye boy and small road to create cockroach road, which is in Chinese, pronounced yue you lu in Mandarin and kat tsat lo in Cantonese. Mandarin speakers, who use a totally different word for cockroach, wont normally understand the written or the spoken kat tsat lo. A casino boss friend of mine said he heard some junket agents chose the unusual name cockroach. There are some fundamental differences between the three derived roads and the easy-tounderstand big road and bead plate. Here are some important points to understand about the three derived roads:

Figure 5: The bead plate

1. They are not a direct representation of the results of the shoe so far.

It is futile to try to find a relationship between the big road and the derived roads just by the naked eye without understanding the socalled colour rules, which are described later in this article. 2. They are all derived from the big road and describe the patterns in the big road. Each of big eye boy, the small road and the cockroach road describe slightly different kinds of patterns (well get to that later). Derived roads dont tell you exactly what happened, they tell you whether there were patterns in what happened. 3. The derived roads are made up of red and blue symbols: hollow circles for big eye boy, solid circles for the small road, and slashes for the cockroach road (see figure 6 on the next page). 4. IMPORTANT: The red and blue symbols that make up the derived roads do not correspond to banker or player. They just mean red and blue (later you will see red generally means there is a pattern, and blue generally means the shoe is choppy, with no pattern). Understanding this is fundamental to understanding derived roads and the fact that red and blue do not represent banker and player is often a source of much confusion for players new to baccarat trend following. 5. These red and blue symbols are the only symbols in the derived roads. There are no special markings corresponding with ties, pairs or naturals. The derived roads only concern themselves with trends and patterns of banker and player results. 6. Due to the operation of the colour rules (which will be explained later), the derived roads do not start at the beginning of the shoe. They start on the completion of these hands: For big eye boy: The hand after the first hand in the second column of the big road. For the small road: The hand after the first hand in the third column of the big road. For the cockroach road: The hand after the first hand in the fourth column of the big road. Once you understand the colour rules, youll understand why these roads start when they do. 7. Once a derived road starts, an additional red or blue symbol will be added to that derived road after every hand. 8. Derived roads follow some conventions that are also followed by the big road. Specifically: columns alternate between streaks of red and blue (with a minimum of one row, and no maximum) on hitting the bottom of the grid (or a full cell due to an earlier dragon), the streak of red or blue turns right to create a dragon in the extremely rare case that there is no room to go down because an earlier dragon occupies the second row of a column, the streak is recorded horizontally on the top row of the grid if the grid runs out of room to the right, the entire road scrolls left and the column on the far left drops off the screen in the extremely rare case that there are so many dragons that it is confusing which symbol belongs to which streak, players can identify the individual streaks by small lines connecting the symbols in the roads

9. Because of the rules explained

above about the commencement of the derived roads, the number of symbols in the derived roads will be less than the number of symbols in the big road. The difference will be: For big eye boy: the number of symbols in the first column of the big road, plus one For the small road: the number of symbols in the first two columns of the big road, plus one

For cockroach road: the number of symbols in the first three columns of the big road, plus one PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER Most baccarat games use eight decks per shoe. This is enough for about 70 to 80 hands, depending on the casinos policy regarding how many cards they cut off the back of the shoe. Figure 6 shows a shoe where 70 hands

have been played, so its almost completed. Notice the big road is at the top, with the three derived roads underneath it. Big eye boy is below to the left and small road is below big eye boy. Cockroach road is to the right. Note that a standard cockroach road is only six symbols in height. The bead plate is shown toward the bottom left of the screen, underneath the three derived roads. On some displays (such as in the Venetian Macau) the bead plate is shown above the big road. You are probably wondering about the small table at the extreme right with the three blue and three red symbols in it (above the World Gaming mascot, Pai Yao). This table is called the prediction table, but dont worry about that for now, all in good time. There is no denying that understanding baccarat trends is a complicated and lengthy subject, so much so that we had to break this article into two parts. Theres already a wealth of information in this first part, and in the next issue of World Gaming, well bring you the second and concluding part. In part two you can expect to learn: The colour rules: how to know whether a red or blue symbol is added to each of the three derived roads after each hand The prediction table: how the table relates to the derived roads How to interpret the roads: how players determine what to bet on each hand, and how much to bet Make sure you pick up your copy of the September/October issue of World Gaming magazine, or check it out online at www.wgm8. com.

The new English Premier League season raises some interesting questions for punters, especially those who like to take advantage of future betting.
19 2011/12 Manchester United lifted the premiership title last season without really facing any challenges after the New Year break. Arsenal kept self-destructing and Chelsea left their run too late as the Sir Alex Ferguson juggernaut kept rolling along and picking up enough points to claim the title. So where does that leave us for this season? Lets have a look at the contenders, their prices and most importantly the value bets for the 2011-12 premiership season.

$2.75

Manchester United
Odds: $2.75 United deserves to be the favourite. They are an awesome sporting club that doesnt contemplate failure. Year after year they produce the goods and they will at some stage look the winner. They are an ageing out t and will have to buy some talent if they are to win. At times last year they looked like Dads Army but Ferguson doesnt do long term rebuilds. He simply nds the right players to ll holes. He also has Rooney who should continue to get better if he can stay out of trouble and stop ghting with his manager. By laying Manchester United you always put your money at risk but if there has ever been a year they looked vulnerable this might be it. Verdict: Under the odds, look for better value.

$3.75

Chelsea
Odds: $3.75 Chelsea looked to be the most settled team in the EPL for the majority of last year. They were clearly the best team at the start of the season and nished the season playing the best football. The problem was there was a two-month period in the middle of the season where they kept dropping points. This is a team that will be desperate for success this year and they will feel there is no better chance to recreate the success they enjoyed only a few years ago. One thing you have to like about this team is they dont appear to have any signi cant weaknesses and as long as they can score goals up front they will be more than competitive. Verdict: Probably the best bet of them all. They just seem to be the team with the fewest major problems to address.

CHELSEA, A BLUE SHIP STOCK: EPL SEASON BETTING PREVIEW

$4.50 1-0

Manchester City
Odds: $4.50 City nally lifted some silverware last season with their 1-0 win over Stoke in the FA Cup Final. Even though the FA Cup doesnt hold the glory it once did, the Sky Blues at least proved to themselves they were capable of getting the job done. It has been a few seasons since the cheque book was opened and it is crunch time for City to prove they have really arrived as a serious premiership contender. They appear to be a settled team and if they can start to grind out points like the big boys they have the list to press for the title. Verdict: Its easy to like City this year and all things suggest they are ready to challenge. Their price though is very short considering they have never looked like challenging for the title in this era.

$8.00 U-13s

Arsenal
Odds: $8.00 What a debacle last season was for the Gunners. Arsne Wenger looked a broken man at times when his team continued to stumble into trouble every time they pressed United. At times they played breath-taking football but at other times they looked like a rudderless ship. They have plenty of problems that need to be addressed. The manager needs to take back control of his football club or they have to look to someone else. Their star needs to get t and start playing consistently and they need to nd a defense and a world-class goalkeeper not one who couldnt keep his spot in the third division under 13s. Having said that, if they can make these changes they are capable of anything. Verdict: This is the hardest call of all the teams. The price looks tasty but they have some huge hurdles to leap if they are to challenge.

22

11 20117/8 | #11 JUL/AUG 2011

: $10.00 $5

Liverpool
Odds: $10.00 Kenny Dalglish holds a special place in every Liverpool heart. There is something about the man that is contagious. He will bleed for the team and his team will never walk alone while the Scot is there. If passion still has a place in football then Liverpool is capable of doing something special this year. They nished last year in ne fashion after looking in relegation trouble early in the season. They need to spend money and plenty of it but dont be surprised if they are more than competitive this year. Verdict: Like Arsenal they appear to be very attractive at the odds. If they get o to a good start they could easily rocket into $5 and you could look to trade them o . They need a good start to ignite the passion that is bubbling under the surface. Monitor their trading to assess their chances.

$51.00 500/1 $101

Tottenham
Odds: $51.00 The London side nds themselves in an interesting position. They are clearly outside the top ve in betting but they are the only other team that deserves to be less than 500/1 in the competition. They appear to be exactly where their price suggests. They will do enough to easily stay in the top half of the table but to suggest they will trouble the big guns would be optimistic at best. Verdict: Tottenham are more realistically a $101 proposition. The only argument you could make for them is there doesnt seem to be a standout team this year and they could shorten if they get o to a good start. When the whips start cracking later in the season dont expect them to be challenging.

As reported in the last issue of World Gaming, the 135-player Imperial Stadium at Venetian and its 100-player younger cousin at the Sands opened recently with much fanfare. Now Venetian and Sands have taken Imperial Stadium to the next level, with greatly enhanced game play, including o ering baccarat and multi-tabling.

to offer baccarat and multi-tabling

622 7 19 Make no bones about it live dealer electronic table games (ETG) are the new black. These games o er multiple real table games with real live dealers, but players place their bets at their own personal electronic terminals. ETGs have been a runaway success at Marina Bay Sands and Resorts World Sentosa in Singapore, no doubt due to techsavvy Singaporeans embracing a format they were already familiar with from visits to Resorts World Genting in Malaysia. We are going to see more and more of this style of gaming in Asia and throughout the world in the near future. The Venetian and its sister property the Sands have been the ETG industry leaders in Macau, with each property opening a massively multi-player Imperial Stadium o ering roulette and sic-bo earlier this year. Now Venetian and Sands have made another major technological breakthrough, with the launch of both baccarat and multi-tabling on these machines. This fantastic new technology was installed in the Venetian Imperial Stadium on June 22, and is also planned to be fully operational at the Sands Imperial Stadium from July 19. As soon as one of my playing friends called telling me the news, I rushed down to the Venetian to check out the new Imperial Stadium myself, and bumped into my good friend Geo Andres, VP of Slot Operations at Venetian. Its always nice to o er an experience for people who may be a little nervous about playing at a completely live table, Geo said. Geo went on to say that the new Imperial Stadium is still the same concept of live dealers with electronic betting. But once I got on to the terminal and played a few hands for myself it was obvious to me that this was a vast improvement on the previous Imperial Stadium!

IMPERIAL STADIUM TO OFFER BACCARAT AND MULTI TABLING

13 68 ! 22 135 14 16 7 24A380 7 19 Here are all the details you need to know: There are four tables in the centre of the stadium: two baccarat, one roulette and one sic-bo. I am told the Venetian has plans to open two more baccarat tables in mid July, making six games in total! All games are dealt by a live dealer on a live table, just as a normal table game would be. High quality close-up cameras capture every second of the live action on every table, and broadcast it to every terminal in the stadium in real time. Most importantly players can now play every single table from every terminal! If you see a hot streak on another table, you can quickly jump on it without leaving your seat! If you play every hand of all four tables, youre getting a result about every 13 seconds! When there are six tables of action there will be a result about every 8 seconds!

The screens are state of the art 22 inch HD screens with non-re ective glass and a host of information on them about all the games. Its very easy to jump around between the di erent games. The 135 player terminals are now arranged in complete circles around the tables in the centre of the stadium. The stadium doesnt have the three section feel it used to have, and it is clear that all terminals o er betting on all games. There are 14 massive screens on a huge chandelier above the tables in the centre of the stadium. These massive HD screens show all the action from all the games and can even be used to broadcast a major sporting or other event.

There are four pillars at the four corners of the stadium each pillar has four screens giving another 16 screens available to display the action. The new Imperial stadium is open 24 hours a day, 7 day a week. It reminds me of when the whole aviation industry was gaga about the new A380 super airplane, and only Singapore Airlines had it. Im sure well see more of these fantastic live dealer ETGs around Macau in the future, but for now if you want to play this type of game in one of the major Macau casinos the only options available to you are Venetian, and Sands after they do their upgrade on July 19.

Robuchon Galera The Panda and The Dragon agreed it was about time they treated The Stallion to a slap up meal. The Panda pulled a few favours and soon got a coveted reservation at the world famous French restaurant Robuchon Galera at the Lisboa hotel and casino. Hed been anticipating this meal for quite a while, and with The Dragon covering the bill he was going to make the most of the only restaur ant in Macau carrying a three Michelin Star rating.

For me a steaming hot bowl of dumplings or a burger and fries can be just as satisfying as silver service. There is, however, something special about dining in a place where artistic flair blends with culinary excellence in perfect surroundings. I have dined in three Michelin Star restaurants before and mostly thought they were overpriced and pretentious. Robuchon Galera on the other hand is one of those acclaimed restaurants that deserve every accolade they get. They have an excellent lunch menu that is very well priced but if youre looking for the full treatment you should really go for dinner. The key to fairly reviewing food is that you have to compare apples to apples and oranges to oranges. Its no good comparing casual dim sum to silver service fine dining they are designed to cater for different occasions and clientele. Robuchon must be compared to the very best restaurants in Asia if not the world because it really is in that class. Robuchon Galera is situated on the third floor of the Lisboa. The Lisboa itself is a special place. It is hard to imagine that this small casino would lay the seed to what is modern day Macau. It could be compared to the Pink Flamingo in Las Vegas, which was the first of its kind and remains virtually untouched.

There is something special about dining in a place where artistic air blends with culinary excellence in perfect surroundings.

Low set lighting and exquisite antique furniture are the perfect setting for this type of restaurant. Polished wood and a quiet ambience all prepare you for something special. The wine list comes on either an iPad or a massive tome that really should be held by two people, not one. There may be more extensive wine lists somewhere in the world but I have yet to see them and believe me, I have seen plenty. With almost 8,000 (yes, eight thousand) labels available you can spend a small fortune on wine here from anywhere on the globe. We chose a shiraz from McLaren Vale in South Australia

for a little over HK$1,000 a bottle and considered it great drinking particularly after the third bottle. The standard menu looked interesting but I had my heart set on the best degustation option they had. As you know, I love degustation menus because you are guaranteed to see the real form of the kitchen. They must prepare multiple, perfectly cooked and exquisitely presented dishes that all work well together. Robuchon proved to be more than up for the challenge. After choosing the most expensive degustation choice we could find, from start to finish the food was simply inspirational. This is fine dining at its best and food lovers must treat themselves on occasion to celebrations of culinary masterpieces such as this. Trying to describe each incredible mouthful would be doing the food and future diners a disservice. From the

freshest seafood and meats to incredible vegetables and fruits the dishes were perfectly presented in a way that left our table spellbound. Creative flair blended with a desire to produce real food that tasted as good as it looked and sounded. Just one example of this experience was a dainty tin filled with fresh crab, topped with the finest caviar I have ever tasted this Pandas heart was well and truly won over by that point. The evening ended with an incredible dessert and cheese trolley laden with handmade delights that complemented wellmade coffee, which in itself is a treat in Asia. Part of my job is to warn diners of a restaurants shortcomings. In this regard I am not often lost for words, but with Robuchon there is simply nothing bad to say. Robuchon Galera can stand proud and would not be misplaced on any list of the worlds finest restaurants. It is without doubt Macaus best restaurant.

The rst thing to remember about the good old days is that they usually werent as good as you remember.

The rst thing to remember about the good old days is that they usually werent as good as you remember. I dont dwell on the past but I dont forget where I came from, even though I dont spend the hours on the poker table that I used to. I hope you enjoy reading about how I came to love the game as much as I enjoyed living the experiences that have helped shape my life. I remember watching my parents play seven card stud games when I was no older than seven myself. They played games like baseball, pass the garbage, black mariah and a host of other games where wild cards, hi-lo and other fantastic versions of poker were introduced to me. They had been taught these games from brash American friends who were frequently over for all-night games. My parents carried around a jar of coins and at the end of the night the chips were counted and they settled to the cent. A bad night would only leave them a couple of dollars down. My parents and their friends adhered to the concept that the game was played for fun, but it had to be played right. Poker is a game that simply must be played for money. They played it tough, drank plenty of wine and most of all had a lot of laughs. I was lucky enough to watch and learn the game before I was marched o to bed. On a good night, much to her friends disgust and my delight, mum would let me play a couple of hands for her while she grabbed something from the kitchen or ran o for a bathroom break. I was hooked and I was destined to be a card player and a gambler from a very early age. After years of playing with friends and family I started playing a reduced deck half-pot seven-card stud game at Casino Canberra well before I was eighteen. I also learnt to play an Australian poker game called manila in one of the toughest games going around. I spent many long nights as a young man playing against old time card sharks with names like Pommy Pete, Arthur the Greek, Joe Bananas and Black Steve. At rst I lost plenty. I was the small sh in a very small pond so I had to learn quickly. It wasnt long before I was one of the gang who sat there all night waiting for fresh meat to come along and bleed some money into our pockets.

90 2001 25000( ) 15000 XY90 20

In the late 90s I was working as a bookie for an internet bookmaking company when a friend introduced me to poker on the internet and the game of Holdem. I then stumbled onto tournament poker and it was at that point I knew I had found my calling. I travelled between Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Canberra playing more and more poker and working less and less hours. In 2001 I came third in the Australasian Poker Championship (now the Aussie Millions) and pocketed AU$25,000 which was more money than I had ever seen. I then went to Adelaide and made numerous nal tables prior to their room closing down that year. I had a bankroll, I quit my job and I was on my way. Since then I have played all over the world, from smoke lled back rooms with gangsters to immaculate six star casinos and everything in between. Ive paid my dues. Ive had some big highs and equally big lows. Strippers, drinking, a crazy party scene and a faster-than-fast lifestyle was my day-in, dayout existence. Sleeping during the day and staring at cards through a glass of whisky all night was standard. The bigger the games the better and there were many nights that I risked every cent I owned because I thought the game was a good one. Racking up AU$15,000 hotel bills at Crown Casino in Melbourne when things were going well to taking a job unloading TVs out of the back of shipping containers to get back in the game were all parts of the journey. When I started I joined a very tight community. At that stage poker was a game played by a small group of people that loved the game and had been at it for years. I was a young kid in a world inhabited by underworld gures, rich businessmen and professional gamblers. When I sat at the table I was fair game, my money was just as good as anyone elses but I have to admit that for the most part all I received was help and understanding. There are plenty of Gen-X and Gen-Y poker players now, but they all came to the game recently. Back in the 90s I was in an environment that was struggling to attract fresh faces. I was the fast-talking kid back then not the dinosaur that I sometimes feel now! I didnt have the luxury of learning the basics of live tournament play by playing pub poker, or the advantage of playing thousands of hands for free on the internet. I learnt from losing and doing stupid things like getting drunk at the table and donating my money away. The game was about earning the respect of your peers by your play on the table and by your actions o the table. Some of the games I played could have seen you end up at the bottom of the harbour if you didnt know when to politely nod your head, tap the table and shut your mouth after some toe cutter hit his miracle one-outer on the river. I am not complaining about the poker boom of the last eight years. It saved the game I loved and brought it out into the mainstream. It made it easier to make money and created rewards that none of us could possibly have dreamed of 20 years ago. The downside is that the game now has its fair share of arrogant young kids (many of whom play very well) who really have no idea what it is to be a poker player. I wouldnt change the experiences I enjoyed being a young man. I lived a lifestyle that most people only dream about. I still love to gamble and I still love to party but I cant do it day-in day-out like I used to, and nor do I want to. But I can walk into most poker rooms throughout the world and catch up with an old mate and have a drink and a laugh. When I talk about the good old days I talk about my journey. Living in the past is a waste of time as you may as well be playing that big old poker game in the sky. Looking back at your history with fond regard is something that we all do. Remember the good and downplay the bad in your memory. Poker and the poker community has been a good friend to me and even though I dont play as much now as I used to I will always feel at home on a green felt table having a laugh and a drink.

HOW TO PLAY THE GAME

The first thing you need to know about fortune three card poker is that it really isnt poker at all. It is a casino table game that uses a few poker principles. Players get to hold their cards, and they also decide whether to play or fold their hand. One of the games best aspects is that through bonus bets you can win some big rewards for a small investment.

The rst thing you need to know about fortune three card poker is that it really isnt poker at all.

$500 $500 Q Q QKA 88AA 678JQK 8 9 T The next thing you need to understand is the name of the game. It gets a little confusing so bear with us. The game we call fortune three card poker in Macau is just called three card poker everywhere else in the world. So why the fortune? Since the liberalisation of the casino industry

in 2004 many Macau casinos have introduced western style casino games. The game of three card poker was no different the casinos wanted to bring it to Macau. Just one problem there already was a game called three card poker in Macau! So the western game of three card poker was named fortune three card poker, to distinguish it from the existing game also called three card poker. When you see the two games in action they are very different so they are hard to confuse. Lets examine the basics of fortune three card poker. The player places a bet on the ante box. At this stage they also have the option of placing a bet on the bonus box, but we will cover that later. Each player, including the dealer, is dealt three cards face down. Whilst the dealers cards are still closed, the player looks at his cards and now has two options. He may fold his cards and lose his ante bet or he can remain involved in the hand. If the player chooses to continue he must place the same total on the play box that he has already bet on the ante box. This means that if he has bet $500 on the ante, the player must increase

his investment by a further $500 to continue in the hand. The action now moves across to the dealer who opens up his cards. He places his cards face up on the table for all to see and determines if his hand qualifies. For the dealers hand to qualify it must be queen high or better. Queen high or better is a poker term. It means at the very least there is a queen, king or ace in the three dealt cards. The other qualifying hands are a pair (two cards of the same rank like two 8s or two kings), a flush (three cards of the same suit), a straight (three cards running in numerical order like 678 or JQK), three of a kind (three cards of the same rank) or finally a straight flush (three cards of the same suit in numerical order like 8 9 T). Note that these hands were listed in order from worst to best and a straight in fortune three card poker is a higher hand than a flush. In traditional poker where a hand is made up of five cards it is the other way around. Also three of a kind ranks above flushes and straights whereas in five card poker it ranks below straights and flushes.

If the dealer fails to qualify then you are paid even money on your ante bet and your play bet is refunded. This means the player would get a profit of $500 on a $1000 investment. The game gets far more interesting when the dealer does qualify. When this occurs the players cards get compared to the dealers cards. If the dealers cards are better, the ante and the play bets are lost. If a players cards beat the open hand of the dealer then both the ante and the play bet are paid at even money which means you double your investment. However if the player is lucky enough to be dealt a straight or better then the player gets paid a bonus on their ante bet. The ante bet bonuses are: Straight ush 5 to 1 Three of a kind 4 to 1 Straight 1 to 1 (even money) Also note that these ante bet bonuses are paid regardless of what hand the dealer has. This means that if the dealer doesnt qualify, or even if the dealer qualifies and beats your hand you will still receive the ante bet bonus.

The other important aspect to this game is the bonus bet which is often referred to as the pair plus bonus. You must decide if you want to chase this bonus prior to the hand being dealt. There is a separate box for you to place your wager in. This means that you are really playing two different games on the one hand. This bonus feature offers you greater rewards for bigger hands. We all enjoy the prospect of turning a small investment into a large windfall so this bet is of great interest to many players. It is also a simple bet as there are no further decisions to be made after placing the initial bet. The following amounts are paid for money invested on the bonus bet. Hand Payoff Straight flush 40 to 1 Three of a kind 25 to 1 Straight 5 to 1 Flush 4 to 1 Pair 1 to 1 (even money) You can find fortune three card poker at many of the big casinos around Macau such as Grand Lisboa, MGM, Sands, Venetian and Wynn. In a future issue of World Gaming magazine we will examine the best strategy to use to maximise your wins at fortune three card poker.

Soul kind of feeling

by The Stallion

The Stallion wasnt interested in a night at home in front of the TV but he was also not going out for an all night rage either. He called the Panda and the Butter y and suggested they check out one of Macaus hottest wine and music bars. He had heard there was great wine, good tunes and some excellent nibbles to be had there.
MacauSoul Soul Sole MacauSoul is not what you would expect in Macau. You could tell your average traveller to Macau that this place existed and there would be a good chance they wouldnt believe you. This is the sort of wonderful place where one can lose themselves for an evening in a big international city. In this case Macaus gain is London, New York or Hong Kongs loss. Macau was very famous for a local sh that Hong Kongers would travel over to sample. So what better way to have a nice play on words and put a Banjo in the hands of a sh?

DavidJacky David (!) David DavidJacky

MacauSoul is owned and operated by David and Jacky, a lovely English couple that have created an atmosphere in which they would love to drink themselves. David is a well-travelled banjo-playing English eccentric with a PhD from Cornell in the US, who now nds himself running a Portuguese wine bar in Macau. Go gure. Eclectic arrays of patrons oat in and out reminiscent of a university crowd. Travelers, locals, musicians, dancers, socialites and any lucky passers-by get drawn into the warm ambience that is MacauSoul. The dcor is full of interesting artwork and comfortable lounges that make it perfect for long conversation over a bottle of red or three. Downstairs the basement has been turned into one of the citys nest music venues, where you can expect to hear live music from jazz and blues to classical and folk. You wont get any heavy rock, pop or electronic dance here! All the wines are Portuguese, which is great as our knowledge on that particular wine area is not great. We started with a fantastic warm climate shiraz, moved to a very robust straight Pinot Noir and ended with a bottle of port and then a bottle of what resembled a sticky muscat just for good measure. They also serve beer. Well one beer, a local Macanese draught served ice cold. There is an extensive wine list but dont try to be a hero, tell David what you like and your price range and let him do what he does best. The Panda was in gastronomic heaven as he ploughed his way through a big bowl of garlic olives (both pipped kalamata and the large green variety). We then had one of their famous cheese boards that included blue, hard, an aged English cheddar and a creamy goats cheese smeared on freshly baked currant sourdough. They have a huge range of cheeses mostly from Britain and they change their range daily so you are always in for a pleasant surprise. Prosciutto, sardines and pat rounded out what can only be described as some of the best wine food we had ever tasted. This is not an easy place for the uninitiated to nd and the best way to describe its location is that it is hidden in a cobblestoned alleyway just down the hill from Saint Pauls ruins before you hit Senado Square in an older, more Portuguese part of downtown Macau. You could easily be in any European city but you would be paying three times the price and would be lucky to be getting half as good a service. MacauSoul is one of the citys best-kept secrets. If you need to unwind from the ashing lights and the luck of the cards for a while this is the place to be. It is an experience that one should savour not rush, so try and organize at least a few hours to lose oneself at MacauSoul, and remember its always best to call ahead to reserve a table. The only thing I could say is that their prices are too cheap but in this labour of love I think that David and Jacky actually get a kick out of providing an excellent experience to their patrons and friends, over making a quick buck. There would be easier ways to make money but thank goodness they are happy doing what they are doing!

RIO
by Pai Yao

THE SOARS AT THE

EAGLE
It was a Saturday night like any other in Macau. The streets were packed, the casinos were pumping and the city had an air of expectation that the night would be a long one. World Gamings very own legal expert, The Eagle, was in town and found himself at the Rio casino. It was about 8:30pm and The Eagle was contemplating what he might do that evening. Should he call the Panda for a slap up dinner or maybe give the Stallion a buzz and see if there was a hot party on? He glanced over at the Caribbean Stud table and thought a few hands might help him decide on the nights activities. Just three hands into his session he picked up his cards and saw that he had been dealt 6, 7, 9 and 10 of spades in his first four cards. Excited, the Eagle knew he had a great chance of landing a flush, straight or even a pair which would give him a good chance of getting the night off to a great start. As he glanced down at his last card he couldnt believe his eyes when he slowly squeezed out the magical 8 of spades! It took a little while for him to realise but his straight flush meant that he was going to take home 10 percent of the Rio Caribbean Stud Jackpot, which had risen to a very attractive HK$2,010,891. That meant the Eagle pocketed over HK$200,000. I spoke to Stratoe Koutsouridis, Assistant Vice President of Casino Operations for the Rio Casino, who said, Were very happy to see one of the World Gaming gang pick up a straight flush and a bonus of over HK$200,000 in the process. It just goes to show what a lucky place Rio is! The Eagle will be the first one to agree with Mr Koutsouridis and the rest of the gang are waiting for their cut of The Eagles lucky break. World Gaming will be running a short series on the popular game of Caribbean Stud in future issues, so stay tuned to see how you could be the next winner at this exciting game that offers a chance to become an overnight millionaire.

The Eagle is one of the smartest and most well-connected members of the World Gaming magazine gang, and when it comes to hitting the tables no one loves the thrill more than The Eagle. His recent exploits at the Rio tell a story that everyone will love to read about.

G2E Asia Every year The Tiger gets his moment to shine brighter than his fellow gang members. G2E Asia is an annual Macau gaming industry exhibition where manufacturers showcase new e-gaming designs and concepts to the casino operators. When you see a new electronic game in a casino, its a safe bet it was on display at the previous G2E exhibition. The Tiger stalks the exhibition each year looking for new ideas to sink his teeth into.

100 Inspired Gaming Group) G2E 50 E-gaming has been making a lot of noise around Macau and the Asian gaming community because it makes excellent use of space and can o er fun games to all players, no matter what level of betting they like to play at. The concept of e-gaming being more than just a row of slots kicked o with the e-gaming lounge at the Sands. Now StarWorld and other properties have launched similar areas. Weve also seen the introduction of the massively multi-player Imperial Stadiums at the Venetian and the Sands, where 100 or more players can sit at terminals betting on games dealt by a live dealer. One company looking to the future is the Inspired Gaming Group who promoted their new product Sabre at the G2E conference. The Sabre terminal took a team of around 50 people about a year to develop. Sabre brings a major innovation to electronic table gaming terminals: real touch. Gone are the days when you accidently placed your bet three times on the one number. Now every time you place a bet, the touch screen sends you physical feedback to let you know your bet is on. Not only does this make for safer betting, it also diminishes the need for intrusive audio.

Sabre places high importance on making the player feel special. Each high quality terminal is nished o with leather and wood panelling. The 26-inch wide main screen allows a panoramic bet layout, giving the player a wide range of bet types and information. This is delivered in widescreen high de nition, providing a visually sharp gaming experience. There is a second smaller screen below the main screen for even more information, such as analysis of recent winning results, hot and cold numbers, and so on. The other great feature is that Sabre can display up to four games at once, and players can switch between four roulette games and four baccarat games. This is the sort of game play that e-gaming players are increasingly demanding. This technology is versatile and can be customised for di erent casinos. What may be allowed in one country might not be allowed in another. The terminals can allow betting on live streaming games (where a camera lms action from a live gaming table), automated roulette wheels (a physical wheel with no dealer where the ball

automatically spins) or fully electronic versions of roulette or baccarat. Silver Heritage Limited, one of Asia-Pacifics most diversified casino gaming companies with operations in seven different countries including Macau, has exclusive distribution rights to Inspireds casino products including Sabre. Mr Mike Bolsover, CEO of Silver Heritage, said, We continue to be impressed with Inspireds development team and their new Sabre roulette product is evidence that the company is at the forefront of the electronic casino table gaming industry. Together with our casino products division Gaming Concepts Group, we are excited to bring this market-leading product to Asia-Paci c and are expecting great things following the successes of Inspireds previous products here in Asia. We cant yet tell you where youll be able to nd the Sabre, but dont be surprised to see it turn up in casinos in Macau, the Philippines or Singapore soon.

BARCAS DOMINANCE DOWN TO LA MASIA ACADEMY

by Leanne Lu

Barcelona is the best club football side in the world. There is no argument; its just a fact. It will take an incredible turnaround for anyone to come close to them again in next years Champions League.

La Masia Academy

90AC I expected us to do better but at the end of the day we were beaten by the better team. They are the best team we have ever played; they are at the peak in this cycle of their team. What more could Sir Alex Ferguson say? All he could do was shake his head in bewilderment as Barcelona played close to a flawless game of football in the Champions League Final at Wembley. All United could claim was there was no shame in losing to the best. Pedro, a product of Barcas famous La Masia youth academy, opened the scoring for Barca in the 27th minute after an engrossing opening. It was as if the Spaniards were toying with their heralded opponents while the crowd wearing red were left wondering how they could possibly make a contest of the most awaited

Champions League final for many years. The bookmakers had it right and Barcelona deserved to be the odds-on favourites despite playing Manchester United on the English teams home soil. In a moment of sheer brilliance Englands most feared striker, Wayne Rooney, pulled one back for the English champions before half time. But in the second half there appeared nothing that Ferguson could do to address the dire situation his champion football side faced. Sir Alex Ferguson, who is not a man that gives undeserved compliments, paid the Spanish champions the ultimate compliment after the match, saying,In my time as a manager, its the best team weve faced. Messi, who is arguably the best player in the world, was without doubt the best player on the field and his man of the match display was mercurial. That Messi is a magician is beyond argument. But we shouldnt underestimate the team effort of Barca as a whole unit. Barcelona plays with a flair that would make any Brazilian national team beam with pride and a defense that would have any Italian licking his lips. They are quite simply breathtaking to watch. Not since the brilliance of the early 1990s AC Milan outfit has there been a team who can dominant the world to such an extent. Many wonder why. The answer leads us back to Barcelonas youth academy La Masia (in English, the farmhouse). The academy has produced numerous talented footballers, such as Messi, Pedro, Piqu, Iniesta and Xavi. Almost half of the current Barca team are La Masia alumni. The football philosophy of slick passing and pure technique was drilled into La Masia teenagers. In the next decade, these kids trained and played every day honouring this philosophy, to the point they can execute any complicated tactic team manager Josep Guardiola cares to dream up.

Its clear the dominance of the Spanish national team also stems from La Masia. In 2008, Spain won the European Cup for the first time in 44 years, and most of the key players came from Barca, or more precisely, La Masia. When Spain lifted its historic first-ever World Cup last year, the familiar names of Piqu, Iniesta, Pedro, Xavi and Puyol were there. They all have one thing in common: La Masia. The La Masia phenomenom continues to this day. In the under 21s European cup in Denmark, the bookies installed the young Spaniards as favourites, despite their group including the promising young English and Czech teams. The Spaniards had two wins and

a draw, getting through to the knockout stage as top of their group. These youngsters share the same football philosophy as their senior counterparts: pass and run and dominate every game. Among them, youll find more football talent produced by the La Masia factory, such as Thiago, Bojan and Montoya. These youngsters might not quite be household names yet, but just wait a few years. Barcas stadium Nou Camp is now the mecca of football. Last summer, both David Villa and Javier Mascherano transferred to Barca. When leaving Valencia, David Villa only had eyes for Barcelona. Defensive midfielder Mascherano described his own transfer from Liverpool to the red and blue strip as a dream come true. This summer, lightning quick Chilean winger Alexis Sanchez was the main target of many premier league clubs. But he snubbed the likes of Manchester United and Manchester City, to join Barca for the princely sum of 32million. These transfers will cement the dynasty. Barca has been the most feared club worldwide during the last six years, and there are no signs of that fear abating. Barca is simply the best team in the world. It is an undeniable fact.

The APPT is back for season 5 and the rst event of 2011 will be at Crown Casino in Melbourne, Australia from July 2 to August 1 and even with an AU$5,000 ($4,700 + $300) buy in you would expect them to be in the ballpark of the 500 player cap in Australias poker capital. The next APPT stop is the Queenstown Snowfest in New Zealand from August 22 to 28 so if you are keen to hit the slopes during the day then the tables at night this one is for you. I couldnt go without mentioning the WSOP main event, being held from July 7 in Las Vegas. Due to recent upheavals in the poker world its hard to predict the size of the eld, but it will de nitely be somewhere between 5,000 and 10,000 runners, and the rst prize will go close to US$10 million. It will be a long, long road for the eventual winner whoever it may be. Thirteen gruelling days of poker sees the eld of many thousands play down to the nal nine players. Then the so-called November Nine return to play on November 5 to 7 to nd out who will be the next WSOP main event winner, often simply referred to as the World Champion of Poker. There will be quite an Asian contingent at the WSOP including our very own CEO Andrew Scott, so lets hope someone from our part of the world can ship it! 15 911 3000 71 www.skyshuttlehk. com Of all the various ferry operators World Gaming highly recommends Macao Dragon: Having launched in 2010, Macao Dragon is the newest ferry operator. They are friendly, fun and keen to impress their customers. Their economy class is as good as (or even better than) the higher classes on other operators. The ceilings are very high and the seats are new, spacious and comfortable. They have the highest quality ferries coming to Macau: 65 metre supersized catamarans with a capacity of 1,152 passengers each,

much more than any other operator. The larger size of their vessels means a much more stable voyage. Embarkation and disembarkation is via extra-wide ramps so there is no need to line up in single file to get on or off the ferry. They travel directly to Taipa, putting you right in the middle of the action with easy access by free casino shuttle bus to the mega-resorts of Galaxy Macau, Venetian and City of Dreams. There is no need to cross a bridge from the Macau peninsula to Taipa. Each vessel has 25 widescreen television screens. No we are not joking the majority of people who come to Macau do it on foot. They might catch a boat, car, bus or plane to the border but when they actually cross the invisible line between mainland China and the Macau SAR they come through one of the busiest border crossings in the world on foot. According to the Macau Statistics and Census Service an average of about 40,000 people a day walk through the Zhuhais Gongbei border crossing to enter the very northernmost point of Macau. This border crossing is open 17 hours a day, from 7am to midnight. That equates to over 14 million people a year, or if you like 40 people every single minute the border gate is open. During peak times the flow of humanity can swell to ridiculous numbers: as much as five people a second! These are staggering statistics and shows just how big Macau has become. You will find that this is a fast process and one of the most professionally run borders in the world. There are no boom gates with a couple of weary guards here. They are used to big crowds and you will find that you are usually through reasonably quickly. However, at peak times the demand to get into Macau can be overwhelming and delays are unavoidable. In the past there have been horror stories of people waiting two hours to get across the border but the situation seems to be improving. Also dont forget the Cotai Frontier post. This border crossing is at the end of the Lotus

Airplane

Macau International Airport in Taipa is perfect for travellers. Its fast and convenient

which makes it miles in front of most other international airports. As soon as you disembark its a very short stroll across the tarmac to the air-conditioned comfort inside. Immigration is usually quiet and a far more pleasant experience than running like a madman to beat the queues you often see at the outer harbour ferry terminal if you catch a ferry there. More likely than not your bags beat you to the carousel and youre out of the airport before you know it. The only problem is there is a limited number of carriers and flights directly to Macau.

Many international visitors have to fly to Hong Kong and catch the ferry or chopper across. Check with your local travel agent and if you can fly directly to Macau you will find it much faster and more convenient compared to flying into Hong Kong. You will have better success with smaller or regional airlines. Air Asia, Air Macau, Cebu Pacific, Eva, Tiger and Jetstar are some of the airlines that fly directly into Macau.

PokerStars Sunday Million poker tournament has a rich history and after years of consistent growth it has established itself as the premier weekly online event.
Despite competition from other large buy-in events the Sunday Million remains on top. The buy-in for this tournament has always been US$215, and to play it in China (or Hong Kong or Macau) youll actually be starting at 02:30 on Monday morning because the tournament starts at 14:30 Sunday afternoon eastern US time (which is 20:30 Sunday evening Central European time or 04:30 Monday morning eastern Australia time). PokerStars have o ered a Sunday tournament for a number of years but the Sunday Million as it is known today (due to its seven gure guarantee) recently celebrated its fth birthday. In March this year PokerStars guaranteed a massive US$5 million prize pool to celebrate the milestone, though the prize pool ended up well over this amount. Just under 60,000 players sat down to battle it out for the title which meant the total prize pool came to a massive US$11,825,600.

With these immense numbers over 7,000 players made it to the money. The last PokerStars team pro left standing, professional racing car driver Gualter Salles from Brazil, exited in 84th place. The nal nine players struck a deal translating to each player pocketing over US$250,000. Player wrzr124 had the largest pay day and saw his bank balance increase by US$844,209.87. The o cial winner was Luke BdbeatslayerVrabel who walked away with a huge wad of cash (US$671,093.81 to be exact). On top of the handsome payday, PokerStars also made sure hell roll the streets with style with a bonus gift to the winner of a Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 to park in his garage. Many poker players can remember the days when this was the only big tournament o ered online every week. In the beginning the numbers were only in the hundreds and the prize pool signi cantly less than today. How times have changed. Most serious tournament poker players have played this tournament and can tell you horror stories of how their dreams were shattered sometimes within minutes, sometimes after many hours. Even though poker is a game of skill you still have to have some luck on your side and to run deep in the tournament youll need to dodge bad luck along the way. To conquer thousands of other players you need to push your chips in and pray your hands hold up. You need aggression and patience in equal measure, and you need to know the right times to apply each. To make it all the way through a Sunday Million usually takes well over ten hours! The Sunday Million tournament provides rewards that are astronomical and a couple of hundred dollars can change your life forever. There are plenty of free-rolls and micro satellites o ered by PokerStars each week that can see anyone win a seat into this tournament, no matter how tiny their bankroll is.

How to Win a Baccarat Tournament Part D:

THE PROGRESSION

Andrew Scott continues our series on the little-known secrets of the professional tournament baccarat player.

68

11 20117/8 | #11 JUL/AUG 2011

In part A of this series, I introduced you to the general concepts of how to win a baccarat tournament. An important concept is that baccarat tournaments can be broken down into three distinct phases: the early going, the middle going and the late going (also known as the death). In part B, I showed you how to know which of the three stages of the tournament you were in at any given time. In part C, I showed you how to handle the early going. If you need to catch up on parts A, B and C, visit our website www.wgm8.com, where you can find every article ever published in World Gaming magazine. In part C I introduced the concept of chasing an opponent. In the early going you will almost always be betting small, and giving your opponents an opportunity to blast themselves out of the tournament. Usually some of your opponents will start to blast (that is, bet big) in the early going. Some of these early blasters will lose big or even tap out (lose their entire stack of chips), but often some of them will win and establish a lead on you. At some point, you are going to have to chase these opponents and catch them in order to regain star position (see part B for an explanation of star position). Lets take a look at the best way to chase an opponent. Lets say an opponent has 78,000 chips and you have 70,000 chips and you want to get in front of him. For now, lets ignore the fact that your opponent is a moving target. The perfect tool to use here is a progression. The key fractions in a progression are 1/7th, 1/3rd and all of your stack. Just bet the smallest of these key fractions that wins you enough to catch your opponent. In this case you should bet 1/7th of your stack, or 10,000 chips. If you win, your stack is 80,000 and you have achieved your goal. If you lose, your stack will be down to 60,000. Now bet 1/3rd of your stack, or 20,000. If you win, you are up to 80,000. If you lose, now you are down to 40,000 chips and you can move all-in, betting all your stack. Again, if you win, you make your goal of 80,000 chips. If you lose, youre out of the tournament. In this example, you only tap out if you lose three hands in a row (approximately a 1 in 8 chance of happening). If you win any one of the three hands, you achieve your goal of winning 10,000 chips. There is approximately a 7 in 8 chance of that happening. These are pretty good odds and illustrate the power of the progression. The key fractions in a progression are 1/7th, 1/3rd and all, but the list of fractions doesnt stop at 1/7th. Before 1/7th is 1/15th, and before that a 1/31st, and so on (keep doubling and adding one to the denominator of the fraction). However, it is rare that fractions as small as 1/15th (or smaller) are practical bets, as the amounts are too small. In determining which fraction to use, look at the amount you need to win. If 1/7th is enough, start the progression with 1/7th and give yourself three bites of the cherry. As long as you win one of the three bets youll win the chips you need. If 1/7th is not enough, bet 1/3rd of your stack and youll have to win one of two bets.

An even more advanced technique is to use what is called a progression positioning bet. Sometimes one of the key fractions (1/15th, 1/7th, 1/3rd) produces a bet amount that is nearly the amount you need to win, but not quite enough. Normal logic would dictate to start your progression at the next fraction up. But sometimes you can make a bet that if it wins, you can now start the progression at the lower fraction, but if it loses, you can still start your progression at the fraction that you would have had to use had you not made the positioning bet. Heres an example to illustrate. Lets say you have 210,000 chips and your opponent has 250,000 chips. You need to win about 41,000 chips to get in front of him. 1/7th of your stack is only 30,000 chips, so you might think you should just go ahead and bet 1/3rd of your stack, or 70,000 chips (and then move all-in for your final 140,000 chips if you lose the 70,000 chip bet). But a better idea is to make a positioning bet of say 12,000 chips. If you win the positioning bet, you now have 222,000 chips and winning a 1/7th stack bet of 32,000 is now enough to catch your opponent. However, if you lose the positioning bet, your stack becomes

198,000, and you can still bet a 1/3rd of your remaining stack, that is 66,000 chips, and achieve your goal. The upshot of all this is that winning the positioning bet allows you to move to the smaller fraction and thus give you an extra opportunity to achieve your goal, while losing your positioning bet doesnt really cost you much. You can still move to the same fraction you would have had to use if you hadnt made the positioning bet. Progressions dont have much of a role in normal cash gaming. They dont alter the house edge and are only useful in managing variance. But a tournament is a controlled environment with a defined start and finish, and at some point you will be forced to gamble in order to win chips in a limited period of time. The progression is a powerful tool that provides you with a very high chance of successfully winning those chips and chasing down your opponents. In part E of this series, Ill teach you how to successfully manage the middle going, the most interesting stage of any baccarat tournament.

2131 Li Nas victory over Francesca Schiavone is a great day for her country. Today is a dream come true, Li said. China has never had a Grand Slam champion so thats why in China so many players are working so hard. Because the dream is they can be the top player or win a Grand Slam. I got a text message from my friend. They said people were crying in China because they saw the national ag going up. Schiavone admitted the style of Lis play caused her problems and paid credit to her opponent. The defending champion had no answer to Li Nas game and Li came away with an easy two set win. I think the style that she played, hitting it really deep, meant I couldnt play my spin really high. She played at a really high level through the rst set and until 2-1 or 3-1, Schiavone said. Then I tried to push more, to risk more, and her level dropped. But its normal. Tennis is always like this. I think she deserved to win this nal. She fought a lot and she played well on the clay. Well done to Li Na and congratulations to World Gaming readers who took our advice and backed Li Na to win the French Open. Enjoy your winnings courtesy of this great Chinese champ!

UNVEILING BLACKJACK

There are bad blackjack players, good blackjack players, and there are just a small handful of true masters.

21 21 What is so charming about blackjack? In most casino games such as roulette, baccarat and sic bo you dont have any actual control over the game after you put your bet on. The only thing you can do is wait for the outcome. Even in craps, after putting the bet on, you

can only hope that the number thrown is the one you bet on. Even when you are rolling yourself, we dont think you have the magical ability to throw the number you want! However, blackjack is di erent. After betting, you are face to face with your own two cards and the dealers upcard. Every decision you make affects your chances of winning or losing. In previous discussions weve analysed many di erent situations. For each situation, there is a better choice. Blackjack is unique in this respect. While luck plays a big part in the short and even medium term, eventually a good blackjack player who knows the better

choices will win more and lose less than a bad player. Most other casino games have only an illusion of control. But blackjack players truly control their own destiny, and that makes the game fascinating. There are bad blackjack players, good blackjack players, and there are just a small handful of true masters. In many cases these masters spent years studying the game to perfect their art. You dont need to be a master to win, but learning some of the skills of the game will de nitely make blackjack a more enjoyable casino game for you to play.

Poker

The lowdown on lowball: 2 to 7 triple draw

If you are serious about poker you should learn dierent variations, as this will make you a more rounded player.
76

21 WSOP WSOP58 27 5

Many newcomers to the game think poker is all about Texas holdem. Like most card games, poker has many variations. Its up to you to discover which version suits you best.
No-limit holdem established itself as pokers premier format after being catapulted onto the world stage in the early 2000s. Holdem was the perfect game to take to the people. It is the easiest to learn (though it may be the hardest to master) which is great for new players. Its a fast game perfectly suited to cash or tournament play. Today no limit is the most common format, but holdem can just as easily be played in a limit or pot limit structure. In fact during the twentienth century almost all holdem was played as limit holdem, with the glaring exception being the main event of the World Series of Poker (WSOP), held each summer in Las Vegas. This event has also been played as no-limit holdem. The major main events around the poker world will continue as no limit holdem events but theres de nitely room for other poker games to build in pro le. Each year at the WSOP there is a US$50,000 buy-in tournament where eight di erent versions of the game are played in rotation. Many pros and those in the know consider this tournament as the real world championship because you need to possess a great knowledge of all facets of poker to play. Lets take a look at playing 2 to 7 triple draw (always called deuce to seven not two to seven). This game is a version of draw poker which starts with all players being dealt ve cards face down. There is a betting round, then players throw out any number of cards in their hand (from zero to ve) and the dealer replaces them with new cards (this is called the draw). If you draw zero cards on any draw, this is known as standing pat.

11 20117/8 | #11 JUL/AUG 2011 | 2010 NO. 5 JUL/AUG

27 27 A 34567 A2345 27A A2345A 345672 3 4 6 8 KK772666Q3 27 23457 23467

This version of the game is played with two blinds, just as in holdem, but there are a few major di erences: Players discard their unwanted cards up to three times (hence the name triple draw). There are four betting rounds, one before each draw and one after the last draw. The game is usually played in a limit structure. This means there is a standard betting amount, which is doubled in the last two rounds. The person who has the worst hand (under normal poker hand rankings) actually has the best hand (that is, it is a poker game played low, also known as a lowball game). The name of the game (deuce to seven) gives you the best advice on how the game actually works. In other lowball games aces usually count as the lowest card and straights and ushes are not considered (so if you have a hand of 34567 it still counts as a 7 low hand, not a straight). This means in those games A2345 (also called a wheel) is the nuts (that is, the best possible hand). In 2 to 7 games aces strictly count only as the highest card in the deck, so a hand of A2345 is Ace high, not a straight. You also have to be mindful that straights and ushes are not low hands at all. A hand of 34567 (a straight) or 2 3 4 6 8 (a ush) would lose to two pair (for example KK772) or trips (for example 666Q3)! So in 2 to 7 the best possible hand is 7 low, and the best possible 7 low hand is 23457 (which would beat a hand of 23467). Pairs are obviously very bad hands as well and there is nothing worse than drawing a single card on your third draw and hitting a pair. Getting a 7 low is very di cult and quite often 8, 9 or 10 low hands can win the pot. You might even win with a bigger hand especially if you are heads up against a player who draws a card on the last try and hits a pair. Dont get stuck on playing just Texas holdem. If you are serious about poker you should learn di erent variations, as this will make you a more rounded player. You should also come to grips with playing stud games and poker in the limit format. Obviously the best way to learn new games is to practice. This can be hard to do in casinos and card rooms where they mostly spread the popular no-limit holdem game. For example in Macau, all games are no-limit holdem except for a very occasional PLO (pot-limit omaha) table. Home games and online are the best place to learn these other forms of poker. World Gaming will teach you poker from many different angles so in time youll understand the nuances of the game and be on the way to becoming a winning player.

Mahjong Tournaments: not there yet

by Jenn Barr and Kelvin Puyo Ng

Despite their popularity no one seems to have quite perfected a well-structured mahjong tournament. These tournaments present unique challenges not found in poker or two player games. Mahjong games are long, time is limited and tables have to play with four players every game of every hand. Many have tried but the magic formula for a great mahjong tournament structure has proven elusive.

By far, Japan holds the most mahjong tournaments per year and probably is the closest to getting the structure right. All games are played on automatic tables (tiles are shu ed and walls are built inside the table), making the play fast and allowing more games per day. The biggest problem with the structures on these tiny islands is the number of days they take. Many events have qualifying rounds that last for weeks as they are only held on weekends and holidays. Its hard for anyone not living in Japan to join these events. Also because of Japans gaming laws, large prize pools are impossible making the incentive to travel to these events almost non-existent. The structures are usually based on total points and the eld is cut in half or more after each round. Players generally start at zero points after each advancing round. There are also one-day tournaments, lasting 4 to 6 games with the total points of the day determining the winner. Europe holds trophy prize tournaments over one or two days, with three or four games each day. Last issues mahjong columnist, Gemma Collinge, has made a habit of winning these events. Play is slower than in Japan because there are no automatic tables. Time limits are put on rounds, meaning not all games are nished. Winners are based on total individual scores and often there is a team score based on the country each player is representing. Outside Japan, the biggest tournament is the World Series of Mahjong (WSOM). This event is not afraid to try new things and the structure improves each year. The 2010 event held at the Venetian Macau allowed players two full days of play before there

were any cuts, giving the skilled players a chance to lower the variance of the results. Innovative tournament director Alan Kwan implemented a new payout structure as well, awarding prize amounts based on the number of points earned during play instead of overall placing. It is events like these that are helping the mahjong industry come up with new ideas and leading us on a path to nd the perfect mahjong tournament structure. The online mahjong platform is becoming a very popular stage for tournament play as well. Online games play even faster than live games with automatic tables, and eliminate the geographic hurdles. The potential pool of participants helps in table arrangements too. Major online mahjong portals are running big tournaments most weekends which often attract more than 200 players. Unlike live tournaments, online tournament players compete for the highest total scores in a consecutive number of rounds, and they can play as many rounds as they wish within the speci ed tournament period. Fung Kee Gingered Pig Feet

Costa is an area in the northern part of Macau peninsula, connected to the Zhuhai border in the north and the Red Market and Three Lights in the south. Visitors to Macau rarely go anywhere near Costa, and even if they do, they probably wont take any notice of this area. Most Macanese favour this area because the local food hidden here is delicious and cheap! Even the Chief Executive of Hong Kong has come to Costa to look for Macau local delicacies. Street food vendors are plentiful in the centre area of Three Lights. One kind of street food worth special attention here is sweet and sour gingered pig feet. When it was opened 20 years ago, the owner, Mr. Fung, was certain that this business was going to be unique, and as it turns out, he was right. Fung Kee is also famous for its sweet and sour chitlins, pig ears and eggs. It sets the standard for sweet and sour food, and is particularly popular with the ladies, as it is believed to help with blood circulation. There is always a long queue at Fung Kee, so youll need to be patient!

Macau has been developing rapidly, with the gaming industry being the major catalyst. Big brands from different industries have flocked to Macau, including big names in dining. In recent years, Macau has evolved into a gourmet capital, alongside its Hong Kong cousin, but its the local and traditional establishments of Macau that bring that touch of warmness. Restaurant Tou Tou Koi, located near the old area of Sun Ma Loh, has maintained a consistently high standard of food and service, making its customers feel at home. Some signature dishes are the assortment of roast meats, such as the roast pork belly, which is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, and has become a reason for visits to Macau. The sliced boiled chicken is also quite tasty. The chef uses his skilled knife work to take out all the bones, making it more convenient to devour. The baby cabbage soaked in ham soup is also a favourite of Tou Tou Kois customers.

Jockey Japanese Dining

The Cotai area has been heating up ever since the opening of Galaxy Macau and World Gaming has been busy covering the various new events and offerings. One such offering is the plethora of food options in Taipa and one hot spot popular with the locals is Jockey Japanese Dining. When we dined here the waitress was very helpful and gave a detailed introduction of the menu. Recommended dishes are the beef sashimi (fresh and rich in taste), tuna belly sashimi (fatty, but not greasy, melts in your mouth), yam appetizer, grilled salted fish and sake goose liver (which complements the other dishes well and tastes superb). All these dishes use very fresh ingredients.

Xiang Chu Restaurant

We went on a self-driving tour through mainland China and one of our destinations was Hunan province. One of our friends has always shied away from spicy foods and was hesitant to try the local dishes. For those who have been to Hunan, you would know it is not easy to find a restaurant that doesnt cook with chilies. This friend didnt want to ruin our foodie adventure, so he ate the same food as us. Surprisingly, he fell in love with the food. When we got back to Macau, we had Hunan cuisine on our minds and found a newly opened Hunan restaurant called Xiang Chu Restaurant. The menu listed authentic Hunan dishes like, beef three mix (beef, tripe and tendon), cumin gristles, Mao braised pork and shark fin with preserved chili that you just cant miss. The chef and the ingredients are all from Hunan. No wonder its dishes are full of authentic flavor.
