Whats New at Microsoft?

Microsoft Re-brands itself.
Many of you may have noticed some BIG changes coming from Microsoft lately. In an effort to remain in the game from a consumer standpoint Microsoft has done something that it hadnt done for 25 years... changed its logo. Still using its iconic four-color window design, Microsoft has opted for a cleaner, simpler logo as it moves forward. This rebranding comes on the heels of feeling the pressure of other players in the consumer market. But why the change? Microsoft adapts its logo to mimic its new line-up of consumer products including cell phones, tablets, and the much-anticipated release of Windows 8.

Microsofts rapidly approaching horizon.

A simple logo change may not affect you all that much, if at all, but Microsofts focus on the future and winning back consumers from competitors might. Microsofts Windows line of products launched its new cell phone user interface (UI) a few years ago to compete with the iPhone and subsequent Android devices. Its tiled UI, deemed Metro is now the focus of its most recent products, the first of which is Microsofts first Windows powered tablet called the Surface. Set to release this month, Surface is creating quite a buzz in the tech industry with its sleek UI and price point. However, the biggest upset to the status quo of tablets is Surfaces ability to run Microsoft Office programs. For the first time a tablet will be able to run Office the same way a PC can, which is a big draw for many business men and women because it will allow you to draft, edit, and present all of your favorite Office documents on the go. There is also the added bonus with seamless integration with your other Windows-based products. In addition to the Surface tablet, Microsoft recently announced the release of Windows 8, Microsofts follow-up operating system to Windows 7. Unlike anything Microsoft has ever done with a PC, Windows 8 has adopted the Metro UI that its handheld devices are also going to be utilizing. Gone now, is the classic Start button in the bottom left corner of your screen: now replaced with customizable tiles for quick access from your home screen. Windows 8 will also be available as a touch interface on upcoming PC products.

What does this mean for you?

Is this new operating system going to affect you? Of course it is, but maybe not as much as you would expect. When companies make changes to their products there is always a little bit of a learning curve, but dont fret, your favorite Windows Office and Dynamics products are going to operate in the same way that they did under the Windows 7 platform. But now you are going to have seamless integration between PC and handheld devices. Youre going to have added functionality through utilization of Windows Marketplace. And youre going to get a sleek new interface that helps close the gap between Microsoft and its competitors.
