Worth a Look
Now that the transition has been successful from Mexico to Peru, asparagus is plentiful in all sizes. The two words on melons which sum up the current crop: Excellent Quality! Cantaloupes are up a tiny bit but nothing to speak of and honeydews are priced nice and low. Avocados still have outstanding oil content for that buttery consistency and perfect ripeness. Green onions and cilantro backed off a bit in price.

Red and yellow peppers are eyepopping specimens with that tart-sweet taste that tells you it is fresh high quality. Prices are as good as they get all year, too. Leafy items have backed off predictably in price with green, red leaf, boston, romaine and iceberg all showing nice declines with good quality. Green beans are local, inexpensive and beautiful! Fall hard squashes are flying off the shelves now.

Raspberries have weathered the intensive heat in California better than strawberries (see Watch section.) The price and availability are unchanged. We are seeing a much improved blackberry situation both in quality and in pricing as we move firmly into Mexico from Guatemala.

Pomegranates, quince and persimmons are gracing the best tables now as the fall crop is in full swing. Black mission figs from Maywood Farms are predictably available at good prices. Smaller oranges are still high and tight . Lemons are down nicely with relaxed postsummer demand.

Local Corner
Local acorn, butternut and spaghetti squash along with pumpkins, mini gourds, and mini pumpkins are here in volumes from sources in Pa. and Southern Tier NY. Cooler nights and shorter days cause a longer growing cycle for local squash. Zucchini and yellow squash is beautiful product but the cool nights are causing a paler yellow. The eggplant out of Georgia is gorgeous in color, texture and taste. New local arrivals include Delicata, Carnival and Sweet Dumpling squashes. Be sure to ask about the freshness, color and comfort food goodness of these new additions. Green peppers are coming from 3 local suppliers which leads to good pricing. Kohlrabi and dandelion greens are thriving in the cooler weather. Were sourcing crate basil from the South.
