February 23, 2009 Volume 1 Issue 1 Quote of the week: "A man who views the world the same at 50 as he did at 20 has wasted 30 years of his life. -Muhammad Ali A Word from Our Officers Greetings! We want to thank you all for your continued support in UCIs MURP program. We understand that hard times are ahead and to prepare for it, one of our main objectives for this upcoming year is to cultivate and nourish our relationship with alumni. We have some ideas of how we want to pursue the relationship, but we would love to sit down with everyone and work together on finding ideas of how to improve our program. Friendly reminder, our next meeting is on March 5, 2009 at 6:30 pm, SEI. -PSO Officers

Los Angeles Field Trip (More details TBA)

Saturday

First week of Spring quarter field trip to Los Angeles currently being planned. Possibly to have a guided tour of Los Angeles via the Los Angeles Conservancy. Ideas to possibly partner up with a faculty member for the tour, use funds to have a docent guide the tour, or use published self-guided tour with maps included for PSO to lead the tour. Details of trip to be announced at next meeting.

MURP Open House

Thursday

The department is hosting an Open House for perspective students who have been accepted into the MURP program. Just like last year, we need current students like you to host the perspectives overnight. If you commit, you will be well compensated by the department and your duties will include: 1. Contact your perspective student beforehand 2. Pick your student up from either the Orange County airport or local bus/train station (they should arrive somewhere in Irvine) 3. Give your student somewhere to sleep 4. Take your student to the Open House Monday morning, March 30th Thats it! Easy enough for a cool $50-$100. We are going to need nearly every MURP to participate so get back to Matt and I ASAP. Thanks!

Announcements Cont
Spring 2009 Classes (Update)
A new course will be offered for Spring Quarter. U275 Critical Urbanism will focus on the lack of critical analysis in planning. It is geared towards the inequality within communities and amongst social groups in the context; tying together critical theory to local planning and urban dynamics in the US. Please note that the course is *student-initiated* and will be significantly more interactive than other courses. Philanthropy
There will be a citizenship fair this Saturday the 28th in Garden Grove sponsored by some labor unions (local) and OCCORD (Orange County Communities Organized for Responsible Development) from 10-4 pm. There will be a two hour training prior to the event, either from 10-12 noon or 4-6 pm on Thursday the 26th or from 8 am-10 am before the event begins. The event will be set-up to help people who are residents apply for their citizenship. Lots of volunteers are needed (Spanish speaking and non). The address of the office where the trainings will be held is 13252 Garden Grove Blvd Suite 200 Garden Grove, CA 92843. Also if you cannot make it to one of these sessions on Tuesday you can still volunteer and do the training that is happening at 8 am on the morning of the event. If anyone is interested please contact me at oneillb@uci.edu or 949-395-3387 in order to get details about the location, times, etc. I'd love to see a few MURPS come out for this. Thanks, Bonny O'Neill PSO Philanthropy Chair
