All Flybuddy GPS and Model 2001/2101 GPS Owners October 29, 2008 Flybuddy GPS and Model 2001/2101D GPS Systems Firmware Upgrade

PURPOSE This service advisory explains the firmware upgrade for Flybuddy GPS systems, Model 2001 GPS systems, and Model 2001 and 2001D systems with the 2020 Remote GPS Sensor. It also explains the procedure for returning affected units to Garmin AT for the firmware upgrade. DESCRIPTION The almanac data stored in the receiver has reached the end of the programmed GPS week. This has resulted in an interruption of service or degradation of the operation of these legacy Garmin AT products. (Refer to Service Advisory 0835 for more detailed information.) The units cannot recover normal operation on their own without the installation of new GPS firmware.

The products listed above are those that can be upgraded. Empty parenthesis at the end of the part number indicate that all versions with that part number can be upgraded. Some early model Flybuddys and 2020 GPS Sensors cannot be upgraded and these models are not listed in the table. Note: TSO-C129a versions of the 2001 GPS are not affected. To verify if firmware upgrade is required To verify if a Flybuddy GPS Sensor needs upgraded firmware: 1. Verify that the unit part number is found on the Products Affected table in this service bulletin. 2. After the unit has completed its self-test, enter the SYS (System) mode by pressing the SYS button twice. 3. Turn the large outer knob until Flybuddy GPS SW Vers xxx is displayed. 4. Turn the small inner knob until GPS FW Version xxx is displayed. 5. If the displayed firmware version is not 000 or 020 then the firmware needs to be upgraded.

To verify if a Model 2001 GPS or Model 2020 GPS Sensor needs upgraded firmware: 1. Verify that the unit part number is found on the Products Affected table in this service bulletin. (The Model 2020 is a remotely mounted GPS sensor. It will be necessary to locate the sensor to view the part number tag.) 2. After the system has self-tested completely enter the SYS (System) mode by pressing the SYS button twice. 3. Turn the large outer knob until Apollo 2002 NMC SW Vers xxx is displayed. 4. Turn the small inner knob until FW Vers xxx is displayed. 5. If the displayed firmware version is not 000 or 020 then the firmware needs to be upgraded. COMPLIANCE Recommended. It is recommended that the unit be returned to the Garmin AT factory for the modification. However, the decision to modify is at the owners discretion. REFERENCES Service Advisory 0835

UPDATE INSTRUCTIONS The modification described in this service advisory must be performed by Garmin AT manufacturing in accordance with FAA regulations. Garmin distributors should make note of the units serial number and call Garmin AT, US 800.525.6726 ext. 3991, Canada 800.654.3415 ext. 3991, Intl. 503.391.3411 ext. 3991, to receive an RMA number.
