Floridas Nonagricultural Employment by Industry (Seasonally Adjusted)

The number of jobs in Florida was 7,349,800 in September 2012, up 63,500 jobs compared to a year ago.
September was the 26th consecutive month with positive annual job growth after the state lost jobs for three
years. The industry gaining the most jobs was professional and business services (+34,100 jobs, +3.2
percent).

Other industries gaining jobs included private education and health services (+19,000 jobs, +1.7 percent);
trade, transportation, and utilities (+14,800 jobs, +1.0 percent); leisure and hospitality (+12,800 jobs, +1.3
percent); financial activities (+4,500 jobs, +0.9 percent); information (+600 jobs, +0.5 percent); and
manufacturing (+300 jobs, +0.1 percent).

These industry job gains were partially due to increases in employment services; ambulatory health care
services; food and beverage stores; accommodation; credit intermediation and related activities; publishing;
and food manufacturing.

Industries losing jobs over the year included total government (-11,300 jobs, -1.0 percent), other services
(-6,300 jobs, -2.1 percent), and construction (-5,000 jobs, -1.6 percent).

These industry job losses were partially due to declines in state government; membership organizations; and
heavy and civil engineering construction.
Local Area Unemployment Statistics (Not Seasonally Adjusted)

In September 2012, Monroe County (5.0 percent) had the states lowest unemployment rate, followed by
Walton County (5.5 percent), Okaloosa County (5.9 percent), and Franklin County (6.3 percent). Many of the
counties with the lowest unemployment rates were those with relatively high proportions of government
employment.

Hendry County had the highest unemployment rate (14.2 percent) in Florida in September 2012, followed by
Flagler County (11.9 percent), St. Lucie County (11.7 percent), and Indian River County (11.3 percent).
Seasonal weakness in agriculture and related industries contributed to the high unemployment rate in
Hendry County. There were 12 Florida counties with double-digit unemployment rates in September, down
from 16 in August.
Area Nonagricultural Employment (Not Seasonally Adjusted)

Twelve metro areas of the 22 in the state had over-the-year job gains in September 2012. The areas with
the largest gains were Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford (+18,800 jobs, +1.9 percent), Tampa-St. PetersburgClearwater (+11,900 jobs, +1.0 percent), and Miami-Miami Beach-Kendall (+6,400 jobs, +0.6 percent).

Of the metro areas with job declines, the largest losses were in Cape Coral-Ft. Myers (-3,000 jobs, - 1.5
percent), Gainesville (-2,800 jobs, -2.2 percent), Port St. Lucie (-2,800 jobs, -2.3 percent), and PensacolaFerry Pass-Brent (-2,700 jobs, -1.7 percent).
Note: These unemployment and job growth rates are estimates, which are primarily based on surveys created and mandated by the U.S.
Bureau of Labor Statistics in cooperation with the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity.
The unemployment rate is derived from Florida household surveys conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau under contract with the U.S. Bureau
of Labor Statistics. The job growth rate is derived from Florida employer surveys conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Both estimates are revised on a monthly basis. In addition, these estimates are benchmarked (revised) annually based on actual counts from
Florida's Reemployment Assistance tax records and other data.
Procedures mandated by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics may result in more variable month-to-month changes. For further information,
go to: http://www.bls.gov/sae/cesprocs.htm
