Mabel Berdin ovember 13, 2009 marks the day when PSME MHCs very own director Engineer Malcolm Mesina took oath as a Professional Mechanical Engineer. Passing the Professional Mechanical Engineer Board Exam requires dedication and focus especially for professionals. The exam is testimonial in nature. It covers two oral exams. The first exam is a panel interview by the Engineer Malcolm Mesina (center) with wife Kathy Board of Mechanical Engineering on any Meand proud dad Benito during the new Professional chanical Engineering related topics which is Mechanical Engineers oath taking. very broad including Refrigeration, Air-conditioning, Boilers, Machine Design, Power, and Industrial Plant Engineering. After passing the first exam, the applicant must submit a complete plant design selected by the Board of Mechanical Engineering within a period of 2 months. Afterwhich he must defend it to the Board. Engineer Mesina proved his competency and dedication to his work when he passed as a Professional Mechanical Engineer. Although it required a lot of time and effort, it not only benefited his company Unilever, but also contributed to his personal and professional development.

PSME Professional Development Course

Brilliant Chua ast February, PSME Manila Host Chapter held a three day seminar entitled the Professional Development Course at the Philippine Columbian Association in Paco, Manila. The Professional Development Course aims to better prepare the aspiring participants for the Professional Mechanical Engineering Licensure Examination. By first, informing the participants of the qualifications and requirements in taking the examination. And second, prepare them for the interview examination and thesis presentation. Even though the engineers in the program are preparing for the professional mechanical engineering licensure examination, most of us have worked on their own fields and need help to refresh on other areas in mechanical engineering. Being one of the 19 participants in the seminar, I found the program very helpful in preparing us for the interview as well as the thesis report. The seminar was divided into three Saturdays, February 13, 20 & 27. It covered topics such as Elevators, Boilers, HVAC, Engineering Economics, the RA Code 8495 just to list a few. The lectures were discussed by engineers who are expert in their respective fields. We were taught in detail on how to present the thesis. And on the last day, the participants were given the chance to interact with National President Renato Florencio and PRC Chairman Engr. Alfredo Po with a Question and Answer Portion. All in all, I could say that the program was successful. And hopefully, more programs will follow. Theres a big demand for Professional Mechanical Engineers in the industry today. And programs like the Professional Development Course will promote the Mechanical Engineering Profession. As the motto of the program states: It may not be easy. But it is not that hard! Good luck to everyone taking the challenge.

The goal of the activity is to gather as many members as we can and use the Event as our way of encouraging them to be more active in the organization. We are proud to say that the event was organized and implemented effectively at minimal costs.

n line with PSME Manila (Host) Chapters goal for this year Revive Manila (Host) Chapter, we were able to celebrate the Anniversary by honoring the Former Presidents and Officers who have contributed thru the years in establishing the Organization last August 15, 2009 at the Philippine Columbian Association. The Plans and Objective of the Organization were also presented to the members who graced the event. The Event is also mainly focused on reviving the camaraderie among the members and officers of the organization. And for the PSME Student Units, we help these future leaders prepare by involving them as early as now in such an activity. The goal of the activity is to gather as many members as we can and use the Event as our way of encouraging them to be more active in the organization. We are proud to say that the event was organized and implemented effectively at minimal costs. Officers for other tasks such as distribution of invitations to other PSME Units, program brainstorming, physical arrangement, solicitation of sponsors in order to minimize cost, etc. The Student Units were involved in the registration and their officers were inducted also during the program. During the program, we recognized the dignitaries present, officers from the different PSME units, former PSME Manila (Host) Chapter Presidents and Officers, student units, and most especially the members present. Our Guest Speaker, Hon. Alfredo Y. Po, mentioned the importance of Republic Act 8495, especially in the operation of mechanical systems in establishments and even in teaching major mechanical engineering subjects, in which Professional Mechanical Engineers are only qualified to perform such duties. Our President, Pabling Ocampo, also presented the Vision and Mission of the Organization and different activities that were undertaken and on the pipeline, giving focus on Reviving PSME Manila (Host) Chapter. A free dinner was served, followed by fellowship with dancing and raffle of prizes to spice up the event.

Unilever Philippines Donates Equipment to St. John Technological School

The donation coincided with the PSMEMHC anniversary celebration attended by PSME-MHC for- (left to right) BISIG president, Frox Espere (center, seated), are joined by ULP colleagues Hilton Benlota, Rey Dakanay and Noni Andrade mer presidents, members, student chapters and our BME Chairman Alfredo Y. he Philippine Society Of Mechanical Engineers (PSME), the only integrated professional organization of mechanical engineers accredited by the Professional Regulations Commission with Certificate no. 1-APO-005, recently celebrated their 2009 Christmas party at the Rizal Ball Room of the Shangrila Manila Hotel last Monday evening, December 14, 2009. The affair was also used as the venue for the induction of the incoming members of the National Board Of Directors And Officers (elected during the 57th Annual National Convention participated in by 1268 delegates at the PICC last October 21-24) composed of Engr Rene Florencio, President; Engr Mon Picornell, EVP; Engr Joli Borja, VP-Internal; Engr Tony Tompar, VP-External; Engr Rey Uy, VpTechnical; Engr Boy Marcelo, VP-Finance; Engr Lorenz Larion, VPNCR; Engr George Yorobe, VP Luzon; Engr Ely Bagtasus, VP-Visayas; Engr Rudy Sultan, VP

The Christmas party was the finale of the chain of activities conducted by the PSME National which started on Saturday, December 12, with a fellowship, among the members of the outgoing (2009) and incoming (2010) National Board Of Directors, at the Taal Vista Lodge,Tagaytay City. On Sunday, December 13, a turnover ceremony, as well as a robust brainstorming session, was conducted at the Phinma Training Center in Tagaytay, participated in by 14 out of the 15 Incoming Board Members, 13 of the 15 Outgoing Board Members, a member of the BME and representatives from some chapters. Among the outputs approved by the 2010 board during the session was the adoption of Go PSME For Chapter Excellence as the societys slogan for 2010, and the appointments of Engr Mon Picornell as Chair of the 58th Annual National Convention, Engr Buddy Virata as special assistant to the National President and Engr Sonny Lopez as National Press Relations Officer. The following day, December 14 was utilized for the Chapter Presidents Assembly starting at 9 am at the Philippine Columbian Asociation Clubhouse wherein PSME chapter Presidents from all over the country, together with the national officers, listened to an inspirational talk on Leadership - The PSME Way given by Mr Chot Reyes, head coach of Talk and Text PBA team, and director/founder of coachcom.com inc. The group later on participated in listening to the presentations of the National VPs for Internal, External and Technical Affairs, prior to grouping into regions ( i.e. NCR, Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao) wherein they established

Tire Safety
Michelin Tyres Company ost of us operate motor vehicles on a daily basis and hardly ever pay any attention to one of the most vital parts of the vehicle which are our tires. Unfortunately very few of us change this bad habit until it is too late. Tires expire 4 years after the date of manufacture and this date is stamped on the side of the tire. It is very easy to find out what the expiration date is on a tire, if you check on the side of it, you will have a 4 digit number stamped on it, this number indicates the week and the year it was manufactured, the expiration date will be 4 years later. If we use expired tires these are likely to burst and result in a very serious or even a fatal accident, it would be a good practice for us to check our tires and make sure they have not passed their expiration date. Another important point that we miss many times is proper tire inflation most of the gas stations will calibrate your tires at 28 PSI and if you are going to travel they will even in many cases bring your pressure down to 24-26 PSI because they will heat up on the highway and the pressure will come back up. Do not allow this. On the side of the tire, you will also find the maximum allowable inflating pressure for that specific tire,

some tires have a maximum pressure of 32 PSI some are rated at 44PSI and some even at 50 PSI. Check your specific tire to see what the maximum pressure is for your tires, it is an acceptable practice to have your tires a few pounds below maximum allowable pressure but not too much. Different tires are designed for different pressures you will find your maximum tire inflation pressure on a small number next to the rim on the side of the tire, never exceed this pressure. Lower pressure increases tire heat, infrared photography of tires tested at high speed damaging heat increases as pressure drops. Another important point to consider is the load we put on our tires, many times we overload our vehicles without paying any attention to the strain this puts on our tires, exceeding the maximum load rating on a tire may also lead to tire failure and could result in an accident. TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE The letters will indicate a tires resistance to heat. Tires are rated from highest to lowest resistance as A, B or C Symbol Area A Hot area Area Caliente B Normal Area Area Normal C Cold Area Area Fria TRACTION Traction is a tires ability to stop on wet pavement. A higher graded tire should allow you to stop your vehicle on a wet road in a shorter distance than a tire with lower grade. Traction is graded from highest to lowest as AA, A, B and C TREADWEAR This number will give you the rate at which the tire wears out, the higher the treadwear the longer it should take for the tire to wear out.
