Nexenta Systems, the worlds leading provider of OpenStorage solutions, implements a best practice localization strategy with the help of SDL Language Technologies.
The situation Nexenta Systems is a privately owned company founded in 2005 in Santa Clara, California. The popularity of Nexentas flagship software-only platform, NexentaStor, has meant that in the last 3 years the company has experienced growth exceeding 400% year on year, tripling its workforce and currently supplying over 4,000 customers. In January 2012 Nexentas growing reputation attracted $21m (14m) in new venture capitalist funding enabling the company to invest in more development programs and to expand its customer base worldwide. In order to attract a global customer base, Nexenta required a dedicated localization program that would overcome language barriers. This meant creating a localization department and strategy from the ground up. To do this, Nexenta hired Elke Vorheis, a proven translation professional and strategic thinker with years of experience in localization for multi-national organizations. that would tackle Nexentas current requirements and also have the scalability to accommodate future growth. The SDL solution Nexenta turned to SDL in order to provide the software that would deliver the control, flexibility and scalability that the localization project required. Firstly Elke introduced SDL Trados Studio 2011 which provided Nexenta with a comprehensive set of tools for editing, reviewing and managing translation memory, projects and terminology in one integrated desktop application. The next step was to invest in SDL WorldServer, the enterprise translation management system designed to integrate seamlessly with SDL Trados Studio 2011. Elke chose SDL WorldServer as a SaaS (Software as a Service), as Nexenta didnt have the internal resources to host the service itself.

The third part of the solution was training. In addition to delivering product training, SDL provided best practice training, specifically tailored for an organization that is implementing a new localization strategy. The combination of product and process training enables Nexenta to efficiently utilize the tools and implement these processes that create a more productive department and ensure they are set-up to manage whatever the future has to offer.

SDL WorldServer SDL WorldServer is designed to centrally manage, automate and control high volumes of translation across the whole organization and beyond; to translation vendors and freelance translators for the maximum re-use of translation assets as part of efficient multilingual content delivery.

The outcome and the future Initially Nexenta used SDL Trados Studio 2011 to set up in-country reviews of its technical documents. This covered two main areas: linguistic reviews undertaken by external translation agencies and a second linguistic and functional review undertaken by Nexentas in-house staff; all of whom are native speakers and know Nexentas products intimately. With SDL WorldServer on board, every translator is connected to Nexentas centralized translation memories and terminology database. This means every translator automatically assists in improving the translation assets while actively creating content. Using SDL WorldServer also enables Elke to oversee all of the work that is being undertaken. We need to be able to audit and monitor work that is being processed and be able to trackall of it. It is no minor task says Elke.

This combination of SDL Trados Studio 2011 and SDL WorldServer ensures that not only will Nexentas immediate needs be met, but also that it will be flexible and scalable enough to deal with any future growth. It will enable Nexenta to connect with all of the other systems that they intend to use in future; moving towards a more seamless way of working. As a next step Elke plans to add SDL Trisoft, (the worlds leading Component Content Management system specifically designed to support DITA, the XML standard for technical authoring), in order to transform an unstructured environment into a structured authoring environment and ultimately deliver a fully automated workflow.
