A new and improved Medical Device Reprocessing department at Royal Inland Hospital was unveiled last week, as part of a $10.75 million overhaul which included a major redesign and new state-ofthe-art equipment. The department is responsible for the cleaning & sterilization of medical equipment and surgical tools. The investment was in response to issues raised in 2010 regarding equipment cleaning and sterilization, and the shutting down of surgical procedures because of improperly sterilized equipment. This major project was approached in phases to allow surgical procedures to continue uninterrupted at the hospital. The first phase redesign and expansion of the MDR unit and installation of new sterilization equipment, is now complete. The 2nd phase a new dedicated elevator to support delivery of surgical tools between operating rooms and the MDR unit, renovations to the supply room and implementation of a new case cart delivery system will now begin & be completed by early 2013. The new department also supports the health centres in Merritt & Chase. On Oct. 12, at approx. 9:30pm, Merritt RCMP responded to a report of a stabbing in area of the Coldwater Reserve. The victim, a 45-year old man, was stabbed in the face and arm by a 54-year old woman. He was taken to hospital and treated for non life threatening injuries. She was located, arrested and later released from custody to appear in Provincial Court in December. Police say alcohol was a factor in this domestic violence investigation. Sometime overnight Oct.14, unknown person(s) cut the chain on the gate of the Spectra Energy compound on Coldwater Rd. It appears they backed a vehicle in, loaded up a cutting torch set that was on a cart and a partial roll of tech cable. If anyone has info, call CrimeStoppers 1-800-222-TIPS.
