WELCOMES BACK
ROD COOK
To Our Sales Team.
Rod brings back 15 years
of auto experience.
Stop In & Say Hi!
Vermonts youth deer hunting week-
end is November 3 and 4 this year, the
Saturday and Sunday before the rifle
deer season opens.
Vermonts special youth deer hunt-
ing weekend helps ensure that young
hunters get the quality training and
experiences they need for lifelong par-
ticipation, said Fish & Wildlife Hunter
Education Coordinator Chris Saunders.
By design, the youth weekend hunt
reinforces the route of initiation that is
critical in recruitment -- learning
through the family.
Anyone, resident or nonresident,
who is 15 years old or younger on the
weekend of the hunt and who has suc-
cessfully completed a hunter education
course may purchase a hunting license
and obtain a free youth deer hunting
tag.
The young hunter must be accompanied by an unarmed adult
over 18 years of age who holds a Vermont hunting license. The
adult may accompany up to two young hunters.
The law now requires the adult to have direct
control and supervision, including the ability to
see and communicate with the youth hunter
without the aid of artificial devices such as
radios or binoculars. Landowner permission is
required in order to hunt on private land during
the youth deer hunt weekend.
The young hunter may take one deer of
either sex. The antler restriction that applies for
other Vermont deer seasons does not apply for
youth deer hunting weekend.
A violation of the youth deer hunting law
can result in a fine that is doubled and assessed
against the adult who accompanies the youth.
A 2007 survey proved that Vermonts youth
hunting seasons work. Current youth hunters,
past youth hunters and their mentors were
highly satisfied with their experiences, and this
translated into an increased desire to hunt in the
future. Perhaps most telling of all, the youth
hunting weekend was the first time hunting for
69 percent of youth hunters.
For more information, go to VT Fish and Wildlifes Youth
Hunting page: www.vtfishandwildlife.com/hunttrap_youth.cfm.
Vermont Youth Deer Hunt Weekend is Nov. 3-4
Vermonts Mentored Hunting License A Learning Opportunity
Vermonts youth deer hunting weekend is
November 3-4 this year. Pictured here, Elissa
Denton holds a nice buck she took in an earlier
youth hunt. Photo from VT Fish & Wildlife.

Vermont now offers anyone an easy way to learn about hunting
by purchasing a mentored hunting license and going hunting
with an experienced licensed hunter.
Mentored hunting licenses are available from the Fish &
Wildlife Department and their website (www.vtfishandwildlife.
com) for residents or nonresidents who have never successfully
completed a hunter safety course, or who have never held a hunt-
ing license in Vermont or any state or province. And, the license
fee makes it attractive. Its $10 for everyone.
Our mentored hunting license gives a person the opportunity to
learn about hunting by going out with an experienced hunter who
can teach them how to enjoy hunting safely and ethically, said
Vermont Fish and Wildlifes Hunter Education Coordinator Chris
Saunders.
A person issued a mentored hunting license may hunt when
accompanied by an adult 21 or older who holds a valid Vermont
hunting license. The term accompanied means that the mentored
hunter is in the direct control and supervision of the adult hunter
and is within 15 feet of the adult hunter. A parent or legal guardian
must sign the license if the applicant is 15 years old or younger.
The fully licensed adult hunter may take afield only one person
at a time that holds a mentored hunting license and must sign and
date the mentored hunting license at the time of the hunt.
A person holding a mentored hunting license is subject to the
bag limit of the adult accompanying hunter. When a deer, bear or
turkey is taken by a person holding a mentored hunting license, it
must be tagged with a tag from the license of the adult accompany-
ing hunter and it is considered taken by the adult.
After tagging and reporting a deer, bear or turkey, a person who
holds a mentored hunting license may transport it unaccompanied
by the adult hunter.
There are limitations on a person who holds a mentored hunting
license.
A person who holds a mentored hunting license is not eligible
to hold a moose permit or accompany moose hunters or participate
in youth deer or youth turkey hunting weekends.
A person who holds a mentored hunting license who is 16 or
older is required to purchase and carry a federal duck stamp in
order to hunt waterfowl.
A mentored hunting license is available for purchase twice in a
persons lifetime.
Fines for a violation of any fish and wildlife law while hunting
with a mentored hunting license are doubled and assessed against
the accompanying adult hunter. Violation points will be assessed
against the fully licensed adult hunter.
Tips for Mentors on Youth Deer Weekend
A youngsters first deer hunt can mark the beginning of a lifelong
passion for the outdoors and a commitment to wildlife conservation.
The Fish & Wildlife Department offers these tips to mentors:
Hunt Safe. No matter what the age, hunting is one of the safest out-
door activities. Youth hunters are some of the safest hunters when
accompanied by an alert mentor.
Hunt Smart. Scouting and range practice are necessary and exciting
ingredients to any successful hunt.
Model Behavior. Safe and responsible hunters are mentored by safe
and responsible hunters.
Go often. Lifelong hunting participation is directly related to the
amount of time spent hunting in youth, especially when these experi-
ences occur in a family-mentor setting.
Respect the Intent: The youth weekend hunt is for the youth, not you.
Legally, you must leave your firearm at home, and the youth must
harvest the animal.
Most Importantly
Have Fun! Being with family and friends and generally having a
good time is more important to youth hunters than bagging game.
Dont push them. Young hunters need positive reinforcement

Expectations were fair, car count- good, fan turnout- better,
weather-great, smile on new track promoter Dan Fournier- wide
and the racing was spectacular Saturday in the 1st Annual
ODonnell Racing Fall Brawl 200 at Riverside Speedway.
Pretty much a storybook day right down to a five car race ending
battle when Derrick ODonnell, smelling blood in the water,
slipped under door rubbing Ben Ashline and Wayne Helliwell Jr
in turn 2 on lap 198 for a three deep past and a check for $5,000.
Ashline held on to finish second with Mike Kenison slithering into
third. Race dominator and car to beat Derek Ming recovered from
a late race spin after being collected by a lap car to finish fourth.
Chip Grenier rounded out the top five. That was my most excit-
ing win ever, said an excited ODonnell. When I saw the 15 and
27 banging off each other, I got on their back bumper and stuffed
it in, and there was no way I was lifting! For ODonnell, the win
comes after years of hard work and a frustrating season in which
very little seemed to go right. Every single second Ive had, Ive
worked on making my car better. Between my dad, Dave Albee,
and me, we just never stopped after having bad luck. Ashline
praised the professionalism of his fellow competitors Before the
break, I was staying consistent, and was running with Potter,
claimed Ashline. After the break, I was having a lot of fun with the
31 (Ming), but you never want to see it turn out like that. That may
have been the most exciting time in a race car.
Fans who traveled to Kansas Speedway on Sunday thought they
were attending a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race. But instead,
they witnessed the latest episode of Survivor that sent a host of
drivers home without fire. Matt Kenseth won a wild war of attri-
tion, otherwise known as the Hollywood Casino 400, beating
Martin Truex Jr. to the checkered flag by .495 seconds to claim his
third victory of the season, his first at Kansas and the 24th of his
career. Paul Menard ran third, followed by polesitter Kasey Kahne
and Tony Stewart, who rallied from a 33rd-place starting position
and spin on the backstretch during the race. The slick, new racing
surface at the 1.-5 mile track produced a track-record 14 cautions
for 66 caution laps, and no one was immune from disaster -- not
even a five-time champion. Jimmie Johnsons quest for a sixth
Cup title appeared to have suffered a severe setback on Lap 135,
when the No. 48 Chevrolet spun in heavy traffic and backed into
the Turn 4 wall. After leading 44 laps, Johnson had just taken a
wave-around for a restart on Lap 128, having been trapped a lap
down when Aric Almirola smacked the Turn 2 wall, and the result-
ing caution interrupted a cycle of green-flag pit stops. Johnson,
however, stayed on the lead lap through a succession of pit stops
under the yellow, and a liberal application of BearBond kept the
No. 48 competitive. Astoundingly, Johnson and his team salvaged
a ninth-place finish on a day that could have been much worse and
remained seven points behind eighth-place finisher and series
leader Brad Keselowski with four races left in the Chase for the
NASCAR Sprint Cup.
Ricky Stenhouse Jr. rallied from two laps down to win
Saturdays Kansas Lottery 300 NASCAR Nationwide Series race
at Kansas Speedway and tighten the battle for the series champion-
ship. During a green-white-checkered-flag finish that took the race
six laps beyond its scheduled distance of 200 laps, Stenhouse
surged to the front in the final turn after Kyle Busch ran out of fuel.
Austin Dillon ran second, .288 seconds behind Stenhouse. Polesitter
Joey Logano finished third, followed by Elliott Sadler and Cole
Whitt. In winning for the sixth time this season and the eighth time
in his career, Stenhouse cut Sadlers series lead from 13 points to
six with three races left in the season. To get to Victory

NASCAR has finally come to its senses and
last week announced a number of competition
changes for the 2013 season, highlighted by a
new qualifying format in the NASCAR Sprint
Cup Series that places a greater emphasis on
speed. In NASCAR Sprint Cup competition, the
series will move to a 36-6-1 format where the
fastest 36 cars will make the race on speed. The
next six highest ranking cars in owners points
that have not already earned a starting position
through qualifying and who have entered the
event by the posted entry deadline will also make
the field. The final starting position will be
awarded to the most recent eligible past cham-
pion driver. If there is no eligible past champion
driver, then a seventh car will make the field
based upon owners points. Provisional positions
in the 36-6-1 format will be lined up by owners
points, not speed. Since 2005, the top 35 cars in
owners points were guaranteed a spot in the
field. Now, only a maximum of seven cars will
be locked into a given race. I have harped for
years that the top-35 guaranteed starting posi-
tions submarined the keen sense of competition
that stock car racing built its legacy on. The new
36-6-1 format doesnt solve all the problems
associated with running a unique sports venue
but it certainly a step in the right direction.
In an effort to strengthen the ownership base
up and create a sense of urgency among teams to
make races, the maximum starting field for the
NASCAR Nationwide Series will be set at 40 in
2013, as opposed to the 43-car field in previous
years. A maximum NASCAR Sprint Cup Series
starting field will remain at 43 cars while the
NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will
hold steady at 36.

A third attempt at the $160,000 -50th Annual
Peoples United Bank Milk Bowl will be run at
Barre, VTs Thunder Road on Sunday, October
28th with a post time of 1pm. The three-segment
race has qualified 30 cars, of the 51 who attempt-
ed, for what is considered the Toughest Short
Track Race in America. Long-time Promoter
Tom Curley was careful in choosing the day for
the biggest race in Vermonts history, as many of
ACTs leading drivers participated in Lee USA
Speedways OctoberFest last weekend. We cer-
tainly do not want to conflict with one of the best
facilities on our Tour, so we chose to run on
Sunday, October 28, said Curley. Along with
the Milk Bowl will be a $20,000 Late Model
Reserve Feature, as well as Mini Milk Bowls for
the Bond Auto Tiger Sportsmen and Allen
Lumber Street Stocks to decide their track cham-
pionship battles. Curley concluded, It will just
be one terrific feature after another. The 50th
Milk Bowl will feature two-time Thunder Road
Champion Dave Pembroke, who will start from
the pole after laying down the fastest lap in time
trials of 12.956, and eight-time American
Canadian Tour Champion Brian Hoar flanking
him. 2012 King of the Road Nicholas Sweet rolls
off in third and young Maine star Austin Theriault
and multi-time Thunder Road Champion Cris
Michaud will fill out the top five starting posi-
tions. The entire 30-car field was within 8/10s of
a second of each other in time trial qualifying.
Its on to the paper-clip shaped flat 5.26 mile
Martinsville Speedway on Sunday (ESPN, 1:00
p.m.) for the 64th Annual Tums Fast Relief 500.
When Martinsville Speedway first opened,
NASCAR was just an idea. When NASCAR was
formed, Martinsville Speedway was a charter
member, a membership that endures after more
than 60 years. In fact, the historic Virginia half-
mile oval is the only track that was on the sched-
ule in the first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series sea-
son that still hosts the series today. Without a
great deal of capital, but a passion for stock car
racing, H. Clay Earles carved Martinsville
Speedway out of the Henry County clay in 1947.
He opened for business on July 4 of that year
with just 750 seats but a crowd of over 6,000
fans. The track has two 800-foot straightaways
hooked together by short, tight and almost flat
turns with just 11 degrees of banking. The
demanding layout consistently produces some of
the wildest racing each season. Defending
Sprint Cup champion Tony Stewart is the defend-
ing race champion coming from a 4th place start
to lead the event 3 times for 14 laps.
NASCAR Camping World Truck Series com-
petitors had a one more bye week before sad-
dling up for the Kroger 200 at Martinsville
Speedway on Saturday. Ty Dillon, who finished
second in Martinsvilles spring race, holds a one-
point lead over James Buescher with four races
remaining on the schedule. Buescher has four
wins this season the most of any series driver this
year. Timothy Peters who held the series lead for
nine weeks earlier this season sits third with a
26-point deficit. If Peters is to gain ground on the
two frontrunners, Martinsville Speedway will be
his best shot although Dillon finished second
when the NCWTS visited the Virginia track in
the spring.

It was a perfect afternoon
in Duxbury, sunny and 70
degrees. The Harwood girls

field ready to finish their
regular session against
Hartford. Scoring first was

lowed by team mate Kelsey
Kenoe giving Hartford a 2-0
lead at the half. The second
was a reverse of the first with
Harwood scoring by Katie
Martin and Sarah Wry tying
the score 2-2. The 10 minute
overtime led to no new scor-
ing to settle the game as a tie.

SURVEY REVEALS WILDLIFE HAVE
HIGH RECREATIONAL AND ECONOMIC VALUE
By John Hall
The MISSION of the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department
is the conservation of all fish, wildlife and plants and
their habitats for the people of Vermont.
WHERE THE MONEY COMES FROM
FEDERAL EXCISE TAX
ON HUNTING &
FISHING EQUIPMENT 42%
VERMONT HUNTING,
FISHING LICENSES FEES 33%
OTHER SOURCES 25%
Vermonts hunters have helped restore many species of wildlife since 1900s through their purchase of hunting
licenses, and then, beginning in the 1930s, through taxes on hunting equipment.
The most notable species to benefit: peregrine falcon, common loon, osprey, Canadian geese, wild turkeys,
fishers, wood ducks
Through careful management and protection , white tailed deer, black bears, moose, bobcats and beaver were
brought back from extremely low numbers in the 1800s to the healthy populations we have today.
How much are Vermonts wildlife resources worth? Most of
us would agree you cant put a dollar value on them. Many of
the memories we have of wildlife experiences are priceless - that
monster buck fading into early morning fog, a Canada jay shar-
ing sandwich crumbs in the Northeast
Kingdom, or the baleful eye of a big northern pike as it chases
our lure, looks up and turns, boiling the water next to the boat.
But, our fish and wildlife are important to those of us who live
in Vermont, and they actually contribute greatly to our economy
as was revealed in the most recent National Survey of Fishing,
Hunting and Wildlife Associated Recreation, conducted by the
U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.
The National Survey of Fishing, Hunting and Wildlife-
Associated Recreation has become one of the most important
sources of information on fish and wildlife recreation in the
United States. Conducted at five-year intervals since 1955, the
survey quantifies the amount of recreation and expenditures that
can be attributed to these resources. Federal, state and private
organizations use the information found in the survey results to
manage wildlife, market products and look for trends.
Benefits Involve More Than the Money All told, the federal
survey shows those of us who fish, hunt, watch, feed and pho-
tograph wildlife spent more than $704 million on these activi-
ties in Vermont. Thats significant no matter how you look at
it, and it is sure to make Vermont business owners take notice
and think about the opportunities associated with these pur-
suits.
