Property
concerns
raised at
meeting
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Moorestown Sun
Residents of Lenola voiced
their worries with a home on
Villa Avenue at a recent council
meeting.
According to Mayor John But-
ton, the three families shared
their problems with a property.
The home is owned by Twin
Oaks Community Services a no-
profit organization located in
Mount Holly that offers afford-
able housing for over 400 people
in 42 communities. The home on
Villa Avenue is one of the proper-
ties rented out by Twin Oaks.
I dont believe that we can con-
trol who buys the property, but
certainly we should have an abili-
ty to help assure there is proper
oversight there, and we will do
everything we can to make that
happen, Button said.
Detective Sgt. Lee Lieber said

An accidental fire occurred in
a home on North Washington Av-
enue on Saturday, Oct. 13, at 2 p.m.
The fire started in the basement
and caused damage to both the
basement and the first floor, fire
marshal Bob Worrell said.
The homeowners evacuated
the home safely and are currently
staying with a relative in Lenola,
he said.
Officers who arrived at the
scene noticed smoke coming from
the side door on the driveway side
of the home. According to Wor-
rell, when the engines arrived at
the scene, they opened the side
door, which leads directly to the
basement.
Before the fire started, the
homeowners left the area, and
within a matter of 10 to 15 min-
utes the fire started and spread,
Worrell said.
The fire was official declared
under control one hour after the
report.
The Moorestown Hose Compa-
ny, the Moorestown Relief Engine
Company, the Lenola Fire Depart-
ment, and the Maple Shade Fire
Department aided in extinguish-
ing the flames.

No injuries in fire
House fire brought under control
in one hour deemed accidental
On Thursday, Oct. 25, join us at
7 p.m. at the Moorestown Library
for an evening of inspiration.
Michael Vitez, local author and
journalist, will be on hand to
present his new book The Road
Back: A Journey of Grace and
Grit. The book is the true story
of a University of Virginia triath-
lete. It tells of his horrifying bike
accident and his astonishing and
inspiring recovery.
The author describes the story
this way:
Matt Miller of Wayne, Pa.,
had been a college swimmer, but
didn't love it enough to continue.
In the summer between his soph-
omore and junior years at the
University of Virginia, he discov-
ered the sport of triathlons. He
loved the bike, he loved running,
and best of all he loved the combi-
nation of all three. He loved the
cross-training, and pushing him-
self.
In the fall of his junior year,
out for an 85-mile training ride,
Matt and two classmates had just
pedaled up a mountain pass on a
beautiful autumn day. He was on
top of the world in so many
ways in love, with dreams of at-
tending medical school, so fit his
resting pulse was 42!
As he cycled along the Blue
Ridge Parkway in Virginia, re-
laxed and happy, the hardest part
of his ride behind him, Matt
rolled off the crown of the road
onto the shoulder, lost control of
his bike, and swerved back across
the double yellow line into an on-
coming Porsche. He broke every
bone in his face, suffered severe
brain injury and stopped breath-
ing. He lay there on the asphalt on
this remote mountaintop road,
still clipped into his pedals.
In what the family believes is
a miracle, the first person on the
scene happened to be an anesthe-
siologist the best person in the
world to start someone breathing
again, to open an airway. The doc-
tor was out for a foliage tour with
his wife.
The real story of The Road
Back is not just what happened
on the mountain, but what hap-
pened after. The Road Back is
not only about a young mans
drive to reclaim his life, but about
the people who rode with him,
rescued him, helped him heal,
and saw up close his amazing
comeback.
Vitez calls the story not only a
celebration of a life, and a rivet-
ing drama, but also an example of
an America that shines. Just
when you feel like you cant es-
cape the rancor in our political
life, or feel like the country is be-
ginning to decline, this book is a
tonic. America worked. Our
emergency responders got there
in time and saved him. The doc-
tors and nurses rebuilt him and
restored him and gave him care
he likely wouldnt have gotten
anywhere else in the world. His
family supported and healed him,
a model of how families should
function, especially in crisis.
Join us to meet the author of
this true-life story of incredible
determination and courage.
Signed copies of the book will be
available for purchase. Space is
limited so please call the Refer-
ence Desk at (856) 234-0333 to reg-
ister for this free program.

lection Day is less than two
weeks away. Are you ready to
cast your vote? Do you know
where each of the candidates stands
on the issues important to you?
If not, its not too late.
Todays technology makes it relative-
ly easy for voters to get at least a basic
understanding of political candidates
and their positions on the issues.
Want news coverage? A lot of the
stories that have been written can still
be found on news organizations web-
sites.
Want to get information straight
from the candidates? At least in the
bigger races, they have websites of
their own. Now, we all have to take
what we find at candidates websites
with a little skepticism. After all, its
their website. And they are going to
make the best of it.
Still, one usually is able to get a good
idea of what someone will do if he or
she is elected and be able to compare it
to his or her opponent.
Whats most important is to get as
much information as possible before
entering the voting booth. Dont cast a
vote without understanding the issues
on the table and what each of the can-
didates has to say about those issues.
In many, if not most races, there are
clear differences between those hoping
to win on Election Day. Your votes will
impact your government.
The presidential election naturally
attracts the most attention, but dont
forget about local elections, too.
While more people traditionally
show up at the polls when there is a
major office up for grabs, chances are
your local municipal governing body
or school board will have more of an
impact on your everyday life. Property
taxes, government services such as po-
lice, fire, street repair and the well-
being of your school system all are in
the hands of your local leaders.
So take a few minutes to get to know
the candidates who want your vote.
Then be sure to show up and cast your
ballot.
in our opinion
Decision time
With Election Day fast approaching, are you ready to cast an informed vote?
Study, then vote
Todays technology makes it possible
for everyone to get a good idea of
where candidates stand on important
issues. Take the time to research the
hopefuls before you make the trek to
the voting booth.
Writer will cross party lines
to vote for Napolitano
When I first heard the names of the Re-
publicans running for Moorestown town
council Phil Garwood, Victoria Napoli-
tano and Pete Palko I must admit I didn't
know who they were. As a Democrat, I
bluntly did not care, as I cant name a time
I crossed party lines and voted Republican!
Over the last few months, however, I
have had the distinct pleasure of learning
that Napolitano was in fact the same sweet
person that had waved hello every morn-
ing as I left for work from down the street.
It turns out that the same neighbor who
had helped dig out the cars of senior citi-
zens in our neighborhood during a snow
storm, the same neighbor that had offered
to help her neighbors with their groceries,
the same neighbor who gave all of us a
kind good morning every day, was the
same Napolitano that was running for
town council.
As a person who has had Napolitano as
my neighbor, I can say that she is exactly
the type of person I want making decisions
for our town. She is a caring, warm-heart-
ed individual and someone who has always
been there for her neighbors. Its our turn
to return the favor.
I may be a Democrat, but I support
Napolitano and her running mates this
Election Day.

On April 9, 2007, then-New Jer-
sey Gov. Corzine signed into law
legislation, which permanently
designates the first Monday in
November as Alzheimers disease
Awareness Day in our state.
The Delaware Valley Chapter
of the Alzheimers Association
urges South Jersey residents to
raise awareness for Alzheimers
disease by wearing purple the
organizations signature color
on Monday, Nov. 5.
Alzheimers is a devastating,
debilitating neurological disorder
that robs people of their cognitive
abilities and ultimately their
lives. There is no cure and there
are no survivors. There are cur-
rently 85,000 residents living with
Alzheimers or a related disorder
within the seven counties in
South Jersey.
Every 68 seconds someone de-
velops Alzheimers disease,
which is the sixth leading cause
of death in this country. Unfortu-
nately, Alzheimers has become a
national epidemic with as many
as 5.4 million people and nearly 15
million unpaid caregivers im-
pacted.
Alzheimers does not discrimi-
nate. It affects people of all na-
tionalities, genders, income levels
and political parties. During this
election season, in particular, re-
member red and blue (the colors
we associate with the two major
political parties) combine to
make purple a reminder that
everyone, no matter what his or
her political persuasion, can be
impacted.
Pledge to wear purple on Mon-
day, Nov. 5, to cast your vote to put
an end to Alzheimers disease. To
get educated about Alzheimers
disease and related disorders,

Burlington County Animal Shelter
unveils Free Pets for Seniors
Burlington County senior citi-
zens can now have a free furry
companion from the Burlington
County Animal Shelter.
Freeholder Mary Ann OBrien
recently unveiled the shelters
Free Pets for Seniors program,
through which all county senior
citizens age 60 years and older
may adopt a dog or cat free of
charge.
This program is imaged after
the very successful Free Pets
for Vets program that
OBrien started in January of
this year.
It is well known that compan-
ion animals can help to reduce
stress, depression, anxiety and
loneliness, said OBrien. We are
making it easier for Burlington
County senior citizens to provide
animals in need with a loving
home while giving seniors a furry
companion.
The cost of adopting from the
shelter is anywhere from $45 to
$100, depending on the type and
the age of the animal.
All animals are neutered
or spayed before being adopted
out.
Seniors interested in adopting
will need to fill out an application
form and show proof of age and
residency. The typical waiting pe-
riod runs anywhere from one to
seven days, depending upon the
animal.
Anyone in the market for a pet
should consider the shelter, said
OBrien.
Visitors are welcomed to walk
through the kennels, and ac-
quaint themselves with our occu-
pants who are looking for new
and loving homes.
The animal shelter is located
on Pioneer Boulevard in the
countys Westampton complex,
off Woodlane Road.
It has hours every day but Sun-
days and holidays. The phone
number is (609) 265-5073.

Town Council candidates Phil
Garwood, Victoria Napolitano,
and Pete Palko picked-up an en-
dorsement recently from
Moorestown native and current
District seven Senator Diane
Allen, who carried Moorestown
with nearly 70 percent of the vote
in 2011.
We are unbelievably proud to
receive an endorsement from
such a prominent and respected
figure in Burlington County poli-
tics, said Garwood. Diane Allen
has been a strong advocate in
Trenton for the taxpayers of the
state of New Jersey, and we plan
on mirroring her commitment to
reining in taxes and reducing
government waste as members of
town council.
Senator Allen has been a
voice of reason in New Jersey for
years, placing people before poli-
tics and leading the way in com-
mon sense solutions, said
Napolitano. We look forward to
working with her over the next
three weeks on the campaign
trail, and will work closely with
her as members of town council
to continue to expand our towns
open space programs, preserve
our towns history, and help keep
Moorestowns retail districts
open for business.
Elections have consequences,
and we, like Senator Allen, know
that the people of Moorestown do
not want to go down the road of
more government spending and
continued division on town coun-
cil, said Palko. In receiving Sen-
ator Allens endorsement, our
team continues to prove that we
are the right choice for voters in
Moorestown who want to see a
municipal government that is fis-
cally responsible, that can work
together to fix the tough issues
facing our town, and who
will fight every single day to cre-
ate a better future for
Moorestown.

since Twin Oaks purchased the
house. Lieber did not have access
to the specifics of all complaints
filed when interviewed, but he
said they included theft and disor-
derly conduct.
We had issues with the resi-
dents from the beginning, said
Lieber. This is purely a landlord-
tenant situation. Thats my un-
derstand when speaking with
them.
Lieber said officers are aware
of the situation, and residents are
urged to call the police if suspi-
cious activity is spotted.
The most recent arrest tied to
the property was of a brother of
the propertys tenant. The man
was arrested for in connection to
a residential burglary several
weeks ago and posted bail.
Approximately two weeks ago,
the department received a phone
call from neighbors claiming to
have spotted suspicious activity
in the backyard of the home.
When officers arrived, they found
drug paraphernalia on the sus-
pect, arrested and charged him
with illegal possession of drug
paraphernalia. The man posted
bail for the second time.
Pam Collins, Twin Oaks chief
development officer, said the man
arrested was not a legal resident
of the home and is no longer per-
mitted on the property.
Township manager Scott
Carew said a meeting between
him, Sgt. Lieber, Twin Oaks rep-
resentatives, and concerned resi-
dents surrounding the home is
planned to discuss the history of
the of the house, the current situ-
ation, and ways the township
could aid Twin Oaks to prevent
more issues in the future.
Twin Oaks is planning to devel-
op immediate and long-term solu-
tions, Collins said.
We want people to know we
are taking action, she said.
Twin Oaks Community Servic-
es released a statement on Tues-
day, Oct. 16, sharing concerns re-
garding residential complaints.
In the statement, Twin Oaks
CEO Bob Pekar said, Twin Oaks
cares deeply about the individu-
als and families we serve and also
the surrounding community. We
truly appreciate the positive rela-
tionship we have had over the
past forty years with the
Moorestown community. Every-
one at Twin Oaks is alarmed with
this news, and we will do every-
thing we can to address these im-
portant concerns.
The meeting between Carew,
Lieber, and Twin Oaks represen-
tatives was set for Monday, Oct.
22.
