BIG TEN. BIG NEWS.

Were Halfway There: The Big Ten season will pass the midway point this weekend. Four teams in the Legends Division are within two games of division leader Michigan, which boasts a 3-0 mark in conference play and 1-0 record within the division. Nebraska and Iowa are tied for second in the standings with 2-1 marks, while Northwestern holds a 2-2 record. Three teams within the Leaders Division have three or more conference wins this season, including two with unblemished records. Ohio State and Penn State are undefeated this season, with the Buckeyes moving to 4-0 and the Nittany Lions improving to 3-0 with wins last weekend, while Wisconsin is third in the standings with a 3-1 mark. Key Divisional Showdowns: Four intra-divisional matchups this week will help shape the races for the Legends and Leaders Division titles. In the Legends Division, Michigan travels to Nebraska in a matchup pitting two of the top teams in the division. The Wolverines and Huskers are each 1-0 in the division, but Nebraska can pull even in the standings with a victory. Also, Iowa travels to Northwestern in a battle to keep pace in the race for the division crown. In the Leaders Division, a showdown of unbeaten conference teams will be one of the key matchups in the race for this years division championship when 4-0 Ohio State takes on 3-0 Penn State. A border battle between Indiana and Illinois rounds out the slate of divisional matchups on Saturday. Booming Buckeyes: Ohio State saw its record improve to 8-0 this season after rallying to defeat Purdue last Saturday in a 29-22 overtime thriller. The Buckeyes are the only team in the nation with eight victories on the season, and one of 11 teams in the country boasting an unblemished record in 2012. Head coach Urban Meyer became the third coach in program history to win eight straight contests to begin his tenure. It marks just the fifth time since 1905 a Big Ten coach has won eight more games to begin a coaching tenure. Ohio States Carol Widdoes won 12 straight from 1944-45 and Buckeye mentor Earle Bruce opened with an 11-0 mark in 1979, equaling the start of Michigans Bennie Oosterbaan from 1948-49. Former Wisconsin coach William Juneau began his career with nine victories from 1912-13. Unparalleled Feat: With Michigans victory over Michigan State on Saturday, the Wolverines recorded the 900th victory in program history. The all-time winningest program in NCAA history, Michigan is one of three Big Ten programs ranked among the top five winningest programs in the country, with Nebraska fourth and Ohio State fifth, and has 37 more victories than the next closest team.

BIG TEN FOOTBALL WEEKLY RELEASE - WEEK 9

BIG TEN. BIG NEWS.

Stringing the Wins Together: Penn State coach Bill OBrien guided the Nittany Lions to their fifth consecutive victory after defeating Iowa on Saturday, making him one of three Penn State coaches in history to win five straight games in his first season. It marks the second time this season a coach has won at least five consecutive games in his debut season, as OBrien matched the feat by Ohio States Urban Meyer, who has guided the Buckeyes to an 8-0 start. Among current Big Ten coaches, only two other mentors have won at least five straight contests in their debut seasons. Michigans Brady Hoke won six consecutive contests to begin his coaching tenure in Ann Arbor in 2011, while Wisconsins Bret Bielema rattled off nine consecutive victories to end his inaugural season in Madison in 2006. We Are Going Bowling: With its victory over Minnesota in the annual battle for Paul Bunyans Axe, Wisconsin earned its sixth victory of the season to become bowl eligible for the 11th consecutive season. The Badgers eye their 24th overall postseason appearance, representing the Big Ten in the last two Rose Bowl Games. Wisconsin is the second Big Ten team to earn its eligibility. Northwestern became bowl eligible for the sixth straight season after knocking off the Gophers on Oct. 13. Others Not Far Behind: While Northwestern and Wisconsin have already clinched bowl eligibility, two other conference teams are within one victory from reaching the standard, while three others are two triumphs from achieving the feat. Victories on Saturday brought Michigan and Nebraska one step closer to earning bowl eligibility. The Wolverines, who have advanced to 41 bowls in program history, defeated in-state rival Michigan State to move within one triumph of the six-win mark. Nebraska rallied to defeat Northwestern, moving the Huskers, who have advanced to 48 postseason games in their history, to within one victory from becoming bowl eligible. Iowa, Michigan State and Minnesota need two victories each to become bowl eligible. Closing the Gap: Wisconsin running back Montee Ball continues to climb the Big Ten career records lists, while also closing in on the all-time NCAA record for total touchdowns. With two more rushing touchdowns against Minnesota on Saturday, Ball climbed into a tie for second place on the conferences all-time rushing touchdowns list with former Indiana running back Anthony Thompson with 68 career rushing scores. The two touchdowns brought his career touchdown total to 74, just four off the NCAA record of 78, held by Travis Prentice of Miami (Ohio). Single-Season Milestone Tracker: Midway through the Big Ten season, several conference standouts are already appearing among the conferences all-time single-season statistical leaders. A pair of conference quarterbacks are closing in on 1,000 yards rushing as Ohio States Braxton Miller has 959 and Michigans Denard Robinson has 900 yards, good for sixth and seventh, respectively. Big Ten quarterbacks have rushed for more than 1,000 yards in a season three times, with Robinson achieving the feat in 2010 and 2011, while Indianas Antwaan Randle El did so in 2000. Nebraskas Taylor Martinez appears in the top 10 in completion percentage and pass efficiency, having completed 67 percent of this passes with a 162.8 efficiency rating this year. Northwesterns Venric Mark is among the all-time single-season leaders in punt return average at 25.1, ranking second only to Ohio States Ted Ginn, Jr., who averaged 25.6 yards per return in 2004. Packing The House: Each Big Ten matchup last weekend was staged in front of a full house, as all five conference tilts saw capacity crowds in attendance. In the annual battle for Paul Bunyans Axe, Camp Randall Stadium welcomed 80,587 fans for the Wisconsin-Minnesota rivalry game, while 105,290 fans flocked to Ohio Stadium for the overtime thriller between Ohio State and Purdue. The in-state showdown between Michigan and Michigan State saw 113,833 fans pass through the Michigan Stadium turnstiles, while Ryan Field was packed to capacity as 47,330 patrons were on hand for the Nebraska-Northwestern tilt. Iowas Kinnick Stadium was once again a sellout as 70,585 fans enjoyed the primetime contest between Iowa and Penn State.

Big Ten Football Awards

The Big Ten will continue to honor its past while recognizing its current standouts at the conclusion of the 2012 campaign. The Big Tens enhanced football awards program presents 18 individual trophies in addition to the Big Ten Championship trophy, bearing the names of one or two former standouts. The distinguished names on these football awards honor just a small sampling of the countless student-athletes and coaches who have contributed to the conferences rich and storied history. Seventeen of the honors will be awarded immediately following the regular season, including awards for the best quarterback, running back, receiver, tight end, offensive lineman, defensive lineman, linebacker, defensive back, kicker and punter. Each of these individual position awards features the names of two former student-athletes. The Big Ten will also continue to honor the conferences top coaches, offensive and defensive players and linemen and freshmen with end-of-year trophies. Big Ten coaches have the opportunity to claim two awards. Media voters will continue to select the Dave McClain Coach of the Year, which has been awarded since 1972, while coaches vote for the Hayes-Schembechler Coach of the Year award. The top offensive player will receive the Graham-George Offensive Player of the Year award, the best defensive player will be awarded the NagurskiWoodson Defensive Player of the Year award and the best first-year standout will receive the ThompsonRandle El Freshman of the Year award. The winner of the Big Ten Football Championship Game will receive the Amos Alonzo Stagg Championship Trophy, while the most outstanding player in the game will be awarded the Grange-Griffin Championship Game MVP award. The conference also created two postcollegiate awards - the Ford-Kinnick Leadership Award and the Dungy-Thompson Humanitarian Award. The full list of awards, along with a breakdown of the former standouts appearing in each awards name, appears to the right.

BIG TEN FOOTBALL WEEKLY RELEASE - WEEK 9

BIG TEN FOOTBALL DIVISIONAL TIEBREAKER

The Big Ten football championship will be decided by a game played between the two division champions. A team or teams that are not eligible to participate in a postseason football bowl game as a result of NCAA and/or Big Ten sanctions shall not be eligible to participate in the Big Ten football championship game. The winner of the Big Ten football championship game will represent the Conference in the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) unless a conference team other than the champion is ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in the final BCS poll. The following procedure will determine the representative from each division in the event of a tie: (a) (b) If two teams are tied, the winner of the game between the two tied teams shall be the representative If three or more teams are tied, steps 1 through 7 will be followed until a determination is made. If only two teams remain tied after any step, the winner of the game between the two tied teams shall be the representative. 1. The records of the three tied teams will be compared against each other 2. The records of the three tied teams will be compared within their division 3. The records of the three teams will be compared against the next highest placed teams in their division in order of finish (4, 5, and 6) 4. The records of the three teams will be compared against all common conference opponents; 5. The highest ranked team in the first Bowl Championship Series Poll following the completion of Big Ten regular season conference play shall be the representative in the Big Ten Championship Game, unless the two highest ranked tied teams are ranked within one spot of each other in the BCS poll. In this case, the head-to-head results of the top two ranked tied teams shall determine the representative in the Big Ten Championship 6. The team with the best overall winning percentage [excluding exempted games] shall be the representative 7. The representative will be chosen by random draw. If one or both of the Big Ten division champions is ineligible to play in the Big Ten championship game, then the participant(s) in the Big Ten championship game shall be determined by the following procedure: a) b) c) d) If the ineligible team is tied for the division championship, then the team it tied with shall be the Big Ten championship game representative. If two or more teams are tied with an ineligible team for the division championship, then the ineligible team is removed and the remaining teams revert to the tie-break procedure. The division runner-up shall be the Big Ten championship game representative. If there is a division runner-up tie, then the tied teams shall revert to the tie-break procedure.

If the championship game cannot be played (due to any reason beyond the control of the Big Ten Conference), the two division champions (using divisional tie-breakers as set forth above) shall be declared co-champions and the following procedure will be used to determine the Big Ten Conference representative to the Bowl Championship Series: a) b) Teams ranked either No. 1 or No. 2 in the final BCS poll will automatically be placed in the BCS championship game. If the two divisional representatives met previously in the season and neither is ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in the final BCS standings, the team ranked highest in the final BCS standings shall be the representative to the BCS, unless the other team is ranked within five or fewer places of the higher ranked team. In this case, the head-to-head results of the two teams shall determine the Conferences BCS representative. If the two divisional representatives did not meet previously during the season, the team ranked highest in the BCS standings shall be the BCS representative. If the two teams are tied in the BCS standings, the team with the best overall Big Ten record shall be the BCS representative. If the two teams remain tied after d), the team with the best combined record of the tied teams against all common Big Ten opponents each team played that season shall be the BCS representative. If the two teams remain tied after e), the representative will be the team with the best overall winning percentage. If the two teams remain tied after f), the representative will be the team furthest removed from BCS participation. If the two teams remain tied after g), the representative shall be determined by a random draw.
