Valuing Principles Above Privileges

Dwight D. Eisenhower was not only a great general in World War II but also the 34th President of the United States. He said: A people that values its privileges above its principles soon loses both. I certainly agree, remembering the words of the apostle Paul to hold fast to what is good (1 Thessalonians 5:21), but he also said that we must examine everything carefully in that same verse. This is never more important than at election time. Dr. Hayes Wicker We must not buy into the audacity of hype, 60-second Senior Pastor sound bites, or political rhetoric removed from moral revelation, but instead feel the human addiction for privileges and entitlement. Secular humanists didnt steal America; it has been given to them over a period of time, allowing our nation to crumble more and more from within and endangering us of being conquered from without. Mark Twain was more than just a humorist but also a philosopher who wisely said: A Christians first duty is to God. It then follows, as a matter of course, that it is his duty to carry his Christian code of morals to the polls and vote them. He would bring about a moral revolution. It would save the country. We certainly need saving by so acting. As I indicated in my article last week, we must vote our convictions, but they must be the paths of the righteous which are just (Proverbs 12:5). When the Declaration of Independence was adopted, our forefathers gave thanks to Almighty God for this great opportunity to have ordered liberty. We the people exercise our rights and responsibilities, but it is not because of some vague citizenship or idealism, but because we are a nation that was founded under laws of nature and of natures God. Absolute truth and moral certitude are the foundation of the pursuit of the common good. Dont apologize for your faith. Stand up and speak out in the name of all that is right and righteous. We must not retreat from the political arena. We are not bigots intent on religious indoctrination. We are not trying to impose morality in the sense of indoctrination, but we remember that everyone operates from some compass. So my reference point might as well be Gods revelation and not mans reason. Patrick Henry, the great patriot of the Revolutionary War era, said it far better: We hope to arrive at truth and fulfill the great responsibility which we hold to God and our country. Should I keep back my opinions at such a time, through fear of giving offense? Should I consider myself as guilty of treason toward my country and of an act of disloyalty toward the majesty of Heaven, which I revere above all earthly kings? No!

Please notice the early start for Wednesday. All those with preschoolers and children involved in childrens ministry must pre-register for early check-in by Sunday, November 11. This would be a great opportunity to invite a friend. Operation Christmas Child - Livia was grateful to receive her own toothbrush in her shoe box because it meant she didnt have to share with the other children in her Russian orphanage. Lejla was too embarrassed to go to school in her home town of Bosnia because her sneakers were so worn that her father had tied wire around them to keep them together. However, her mother made ` her go to school that day where she received a shoe box with a new pair of white sneakers inside. Twin girls in Africa were the last in line at the shoe box distribution, but there was only one large box left. Inside was two of everything! YOU can be part of these wonderful stories by ministering to children and showing them how much God loves them and wants to give them the great gift of salvation. Pick-up a shoe box in the Commons, Fellowship Hallway, or Courtyard and fill it for a girl or boy. Then return the box back to any of the tables. Or, if you do not want to fill a box, there are bins by the doors you can fill with goodies and we will pack a box for you. Deadline to return shoe boxes is November 10-11. For questions, call Jody at 591-1895. Cans by the Car - The Heath BLG will be sponsoring a Cans by the Car event for all church attenders the weekend of November 3 & 4. Please bring non-perishable food items that weekend and leave them behind your car. Members of the Heath BLG will pick up the items during church service and give them to Helps Outreach.
