Van Buren Twp. trustee candidates make cases

Field of 5 in race for 4 board seats
Residents in Van Buren Township will have at least two new trustees after all the ballots are counted in the Nov. 6 election. Beyond that, however, the rest of the local races look locked up, with top vote-getters from Augusts primary election advancing without opposition on the ballot. Although campaigns for supervisor are being waged by Larry Fix and Julianne Chard, Democrat Linda Combs is the only candidate whose name is on the ballot. Likewise, Clerk Leon Wright and Treasurer Sharry Budd, both Democrats, are unopposed on the ballot. Combs narrowly bested incumbent Supervisor Paul White in the primary. A recount requested by White later confirmed Combs as the winner. Five candidates, meanwhile, are in the contest for four trustee seats: Republican Ann Fioritto and Democrats Reggie Miller, Brenda McClanahan, Phillip Hart and Jeffrey Jahr. Hart and Jahr are incumbents. Heres a look at the trustee candidates, based on questionnaires submitted to The View: Phillip Hart is a longtime Ford Motor Co. employee who says one of his key attributes is embracing a team approach. I respect all opinions and I treat everyone with respect, he says. Hart lists public safety and managing human resources as two key issues in the election. Regarding

Sumpter races not contested

Sumpter Township is in line for an uneventful Election Day at least on the local front. Yes, residents will encounter everything from high national offices like U.S. president and senator to a plethora of state ballot proposals and county choices, but decisions affecting only the township are without much drama. The majority of the communitys current slate of office-holders Supervisor Johnny Vawters, Clerk Clarence Hoffman, Treasurer John Morgan and Trustees Alan Bates, William Hamm and Peggy Morgan are all running for re-election unopposed. Planning commission member Don Swinson, meanwhile, is the only non-incumbent on the ballot for the fourth trustee position. He looks to fill the seat held by Linda Kennedy, who did not run for reelection. All of the candidates are Democrats. Township residents are also being asked to renew 1 mill for fire protection. A mill is $1 in taxes for every $1,000 of taxable property value. The millage runs for four years and would raise an estimated $337,938 in its first year.

Rawsonville students set reading mark

ver the summer, Mary Ellen Vago, the media technician at Rawsonville Elementary School, gave students the challenge to read 100,000 minutes and log them on Scholastics Read for the World Record website. Not only did students meet the challenge, they beat it, recording a total of 383,756 minutes read. That put Rawsonville No. 1 in the state of Michigan and No. 53 overall world-wide, out of 4,446 schools around the world participating. In 2011, when Scholastic ran the summer challenge, students collectively read 64 million minutes globally. Scholastics goal this summer was to beat last years record and it was achieved over 95 million minutes. To honor their accomplishment of being the No. 1 readers in Michigan, Rawsonville was presented with a certicate by Scholastic representative, Becky Hoberecht (back row, right), earlier this month. Accepting the award with Mary Ellen Vago are fourth-grade students Temara Ragland, Shaelyn Riddle, Ora Naya Morris, Braeyon Grantham, Henry Cruz Castillo and Gavin Williams.
