2012 Cross Country League Champions

The election went a bit differently this year because we only had one 8th grade
candidate apply to be on the Honor Committee and one for the SCA. As a result, we ended up with one more 7th grade Honor Council member and one more 7th grade SCA member. All of our student candidates did a fantastic job presenting their speeches to the middle school student body. This was truly a tough decision to make because each and every one of our student candidates possesses the leadership qualities of a great student leader. Please join us in congratulating our new SCA and Honor Council Members! SCA Spencer Chupik Anna Willis Sydney Braham Isabella Casey Rebecca Miller Maria Cetrone *Hannah Auerbach *8th Grade President

Weather/Emergency Closings
With the chance of inclement weather moving into the area this week, its a good time to review our communications procedures should we need to alter our school schedule. Decisions concerning School Closing or a late opening because of bad weather will be made by 6:00 AM. A message will be left on the schools answering machine and may be accessed by calling 627-1383. We will also post the information on the schools website: www.thewilliamsschool.org. and blast an automated announcement using voice and text-messaging formats. We will not necessarily follow the decisions of the other schools, so it is important to pay attention specific to The Williams School. In addition, most local radio stations will broadcast announcements. WTAR-AM (AM 79), WNIS-AM (AM 850), WHRO (FM 89.5), WHRV (FM 90.3) and 2WD (FM 101.3) are regularly notified by our school. We also notify WTKR (3), WAVY (10) and WVEC (13).

Thursday, November 1 at 7 pm in the MPR, we will host an Internet Safety/Digital citizenship presentation for grades 4-8 parents and students. We also invite the parents of those in grades K-3 to attend. The event will be led by Kenneth Bryn Swartz, Assistant Attorney General and Prosecutor with the Computer Crime Section of the Virginia Office of the Attorney General. Please join us!

Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinellis "SafetyNet" Presentation

The Attorney General's Computer Crime Section (CCS) is comprised of prosecutors and criminal investigators who prosecute and investigate computer crimes across Virginia. A key element of the mission of the CCS is to educate the public about the Internets potential dangers. Last year alone, the CCS trained and educated over 5,000 Virginia parents and children. While the Internet is filled with enormous promise, it also carries serious new problems, namely how to educate children about the consequences of posting too much personal information, including inappropriate material, and how to protect children from Internet predators and scam artists. Today's children and teenagers have become sophisticated and knowledgeable users of the Internet, often times more knowledgeable than their parents. But these children and teens often dont realize the consequences of their actions and their vulnerability while online. Personal information placed on the Internet can damage our childrens futures and serves as an electronic footprint for online predators and thieves to use against them. The CCS' "SafetyNet" presentation is an interactive program that highlights the issues and consequences surrounding cyber-bullying and sexting, and utilizes a real-life story to demonstrate how easy it is for an Internet predator using very little personal information to track down a child victim. The CCS frequently gives these tailored presentation to teachers, parents, and elementary, middle and high schools across the Commonwealth. For more information on Attorney General Ken Cuccinellis Internet safety programs, please visit www.vaag.com.

Events of Care, Comfort and Courage to Honor Hampton Roads Military Spouses A Courage Tree has grown in the front lobby of The Williams School and each leaf on it honors a member of a military family who sacrifice so much so that their family members can serve our country. This tree is part of a community outreach project in partnership with the Virginia Stage Company who will be premiering The Comfort Team, a new play that takes a poignant look at a group of Navy spouses. We invite you to drop by The Williams School by midday Monday, October 29th to fill out a leaf. After Monday, our tree will be replanted at the Wells Theater in the lobby. It will be standing with 9 other trees from all over the Hampton Roads area during the run of the show, which closes November 18th. Special thanks to Girl Scout Troop 1708 for cutting out several hundred leaves.

The Francophone and Hispanic two-day celebration, November 6th and 7th, has for purpose to promote the cultures and languages of many countries around the world including Haiti where our Sister School, Saint Gabriel, is located. The theme chosen this year is Monuments and Statues. TWS will be celebrating this event with delicious food in the cafeteria, books in the library, songs, DVDs, activities in the computer lab, art, games, Teddys birthday, and others. Students will present a few of their research projects at assemblies this quarter.

Bonjour! Je mappelle lOurson.

Dear Parents, On Thursday, November 8th, 8:30 a.m.9:20 a.m., Mme. Kelly, a friend and neighbor of TWS will invite the 2nd graders to celebrate Teddys 8th birthday at her beautiful home on Fairfax.

Teddy / lOurson, the 2nd graders mascot from the French Alps will read his birthday cards and open his presents. This happy event will give the children an opportunity to practice their French by making greeting cards, playing games and singing thematic and traditional songs. How can you help? Encourage your child to bring one of his or her beloved teddies and to wear the colors red, white, and blue. Merci beaucoup! Madame Britz
