Compilation of memories submitted by OHS alumni

Written by Mary Anne Hanner, Class of 1968 "The Study Hall" Until 1994, the study hall was a large, open, spacious room above the Old Gym. It was a beautiful room with huge windows on three sides and squeaky hardwood floors. Many assignments were completed there, as well as secret notes and midday naps. The OHS library was located on the north end of the room, divided by 4-foot shelves. Students had continual access to books, encyclopedias, newspapers and magazines during study period. On the north wall of the library was a door that opened outside to either a black wrought-iron staircase or a tubular slide used for fire safety exits. Many stories could be shared about those memorable drills! The first day of school all students would gather in the study hall. The superintendent would be on the stage to introduce the staff. Everyone was anxious to meet the new teachers. Would they be lenient or strict? Time would tell. The teacher assigned to supervise study hall had a desk placed on an elevated stage. A frequent prank was to adjust the front legs of the desk partially off the platform. The teacher would arrive and sit at the desk, and if given the slightest push, the table would go over the edge! Many generations of students have waited for that to happen and subdued their giggles when it did! A student from the 1950s reported that sometimes kids would place a chair on top of a bookcase in the library and sit there until the teacher noticed, which usually resulted in a trip to the office! Another recalls the sign by the wall clock that read, "Time passes, will you?" Prom dinners were held in the study hall. The room was transformed into an elegant dining experience. The junior class's mothers would prepare the meal in the home ec room. The freshmen served it in appropriate costume attire. Many fondly remember those proms and dinners.

Submitted for the "OHS: 90 Years of Memories" event held May 12, 2012, to commemorate Oakland High School in Oakland, Illinois.
