National Geographic to auction famous photos, ar t

NEW YORK (AP) National Geographic Society has chronicled scientific expeditions, explorations, archaeology, wildlife and world cultures for more than 100 years, amassing a collection of 11.5 million photos and original illustrations. A small selection of that massive archive 240 pieces spanning from the late 1800s to the present will be sold at Christie's in December at an auction expected to bring about $3 million, the first time any of the institution's collection has been sold. Among the items are some of National Geographic's most indelible photographs, including that of an Afghan girl during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, a portrait of Admiral Robert Peary at his 1908 expedition to the North Pole, a roaring lion in South Africa and the face of a Papua New Guinea aborigine. Paintings and illustrations include N.C. Wyeth's historical scene of sword-fighting pirates, Charles Bittinger's view of Earth as seen from the moon, and Charles Knight's depictions of dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals. They are being auctioned "to celebrate our legacy .... and to give people a chance to buy a little see Photos on page 3

Vintage Aston Martin DB5 driven by Sir Paul McCartney set to fetch $1.6 million
By Leon Watson, Mail OnLine

A vintage Aston Martin DB5 driven by Sir Paul McCartney while The Beatles shot to international fame is expected to fetch more than $1.6M when it goes on sale.

the bidding for RM Auctions, said the fame of both the car and the owner made it a particularly special item. Mr Wallman said: 'The Aston Martin DB5 is one of the most iconic cars in the world, driven by James Bond. And were talking about one of the most iconic super groups of the 1960s. 'Weve sold a couple of cars owned by Steve McQueen which have sold for eight, nine, 10 times what they would be worth if they were just regular cars. 'Im not going to predict that happening here but if somebody collects Beatles memorabilia and just really wanted to have Paul McCartneys Aston Martin then it could go crazy.'

part of this great institution's history," said Maura Mulvihill, senior vice president of National Geographic's image and video archives. "We think of ourselves as the unsung fathers of modern photojournalism," she added. "I don't think people are aware of what a massive instructive archive this is." Proceeds from the Dec. 6 auction, just weeks before National Geographic's 125th anniversary, will go for the promotion and preservation of the archive and "the nurturing of young photographers, artists and explorers ... who are the future of the organization," Mulvihill said. National Geographic sponsors and funds scientific research and exploration through its official journal, National Geographic Magazine, which reaches 8.8 million people worldwide in 36 countries and in 27 languages. The society reaches millions more through its National Geographic Channel, books and other sources. While National Geographic is known today for its photography, early magazines were filled with artwork. Among the fine art being offered is an oil painting by Tom Lovell of Gen. Robert E. Lee's Civil War surrender at Appomattox. It's expected to fetch $20,000 to $30,000. "The Duel On The Beach," a painting of two pirates by the American artist N.C. Wyeth, is estimated to sell for $800,000 to $1.2 million. Another Wyeth, "James Wolfe at Quebec," was commissioned to accompany a 1949 article on the general taking Quebec from the French general the Marquis de Montcalm. It has a pre-sale estimate of $30,000 to $50,000. Steve McCurry's photograph of the Afghan girl carries an $8,000 to $12,000 pre-sale estimate. McCurry has made a special print of the image for the sale, and part of the proceeds from it will be donated to the Afghan Girls' Fund.

Bob Knight selling rings, medal at auction

NEW YORK Hall of Famer Bob Knight is selling his championship basketball rings and Olympic gold medal for what he considers a very good reason: the education of his grandchildren. A collection of the former coach's memorabilia will be auctioned by Steiner Sports Memorabilia. It's part of a sale that features the jersey Yankees pitcher Don Larsen wore while pitching a perfect game in the World Series. "John Havlicek and I were just talking one day about all the stuff we had accumulated over the years," Knight said Monday from the Denver airport, referring to his college teammate at Ohio State who went on to a Hall of Fame career with the Boston Celtics. "As we talked we decided the money could bevery useful to put our grandchildren through college." The auction, which has already started for some items, runs through Dec. 5 and will feature Knight's rings from his three NCAA championship teams at Indiana the undefeated 1976 season and the ones from 1981 and 1987. The company will also sell a sports coat and a warmup jacket given to Knight as coach of the gold medal-winning U.S. Olympic team in 1984. "I've got stuff I didn't even know I had," Knight said. "I don't put anything up in the house. If you came into the house you would think I was a mailman. And I don't even wear rings." Knight is aware of the enthusiasm of the memorabilia market. "Sports people are nuts," Knight said with a laugh. "Look at how much they would they pay for Babe Ruth's cap or Honus Wagner's card? I guess these are people who want to own things, things that are the results of what someone else did in sports. I was very pleased there was a market for something like this that my grandkids I have two grandsons and my wife has a niece and nephew, who would get good use out of this." Knight, who set a Division I record which has since been surpassed with 902 wins at Army, Indiana and Texas Tech, was asked if there was anything that wouldn't make it to the auction floor.

"I have some things Ted Williams gave me," Knight said of the baseball Hall of Famer. "He was very special to me, so I will never part with those things."

Moon rocks, chunks of Mars auctioned in New York

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Meteorites from Mars and the biggest piece of the Moon ever offered for sale went on the block on Sunday in New York in what organizers billed as history's largest meteorite auction, which brought in over $1 million. More than 125 meteorites were offered in the private sale. The most expensive items on offer were four pounds (1.8 kg) of Moon rock that were once embedded on the dark side of the Moon before an asteroid sent them hurling into space. They sold for $330,000 after the auction's end. The most hotly contested lot was a slice of the Seymchan meteorite, pieces of which were found in Siberia in the 1960s. The 9-inch-tall (23-cm-tall) slice, embedded with olivine crystals, went for $43,750, about 12 times its estimated sale price. Items that failed to sell included a large fragment of the Tissint meteorite of Martian origin that fell in Morocco last year, and an iron meteorite resembling a howling face that was found in the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa. It was valued at $175,000 to $225,000. Meteorites are priced for their size, rarity, beauty and provenance. Some items sold for as little as a few hundred dollars. Buyers are typically willing to pay more for bits of rock or iron known to have originated on the Moon or Mars. Lunar meteorites are particularly rare, he said, with only about 135 pounds (61.2 kg) of the rock known to exist on Earth. "It is the oldest material mankind can touch, the raw ingredients of the planets," Pitt said in describing the appeal of collecting meteorites. A piece of the so-called Peekskill meteorite, which was caught on camera 20 years ago burning through the sky before smacking into a Chevy Malibu in New York, sold for $16,250. One buyer paid $1,375 for a piece of stone involved in the only documented fatality caused by a meteorite when it crashed down in 1972. "It was a cow," auctioneer Ed Beardsley said. "It was pulverized. It was quick."

Smashed Nirvana bass up for auction

The remnants of a smashed bass guitar from Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit video are to be sold for up to $32,000 next month. It will be sold by Christie's in London on November 29 at an entertainment memorabilia auction which also includes Indiana Jones's whip and the Holy Grail used in the Last Crusade film. Bob Dylan's high school yearbook with a personal message written by him will also be among the lots. The band's Krist Novoselic's bass is seen being trashed by his Nirvana bandmate, late frontman Kurt Cobain, in the celebrated promo for the Seattle trio's first hit. Novoselic bought the Zen-On bass from a pawn shop prior to the 1991 video shoot knowing he would bash it to pieces during filming. The body of the guitar was salvaged by one of the teenage extras in the film, which saw the the band play in front of an audience in a dark moody studio flanked by black-clad cheerleaders. Christie's estimates the guitar will sell for $19,000 to $32,000.

Indy's whip, originally donated by filmmaker Steven Spielberg for a 2001 charity auction, is expected to fetch up to $19,000, while the Grail is estimated to go for up to $4,500. The Dylan item dates back to 1958 and features a photograph of the young chubby-cheeked Robert Zimmerman his real name - pictured as a highschool student at the age of 17, before he left Minnesota for New York. In the yearbook he has written: "Dear Jerry, Well the year's almost all over now huh. Remember the 'sessions' down at Collier. Keep practicing the guitar and maybe someday you'll be great! A friend, Bob Zimmerman." The book is expected to go for up to nearly $8,000.

A gold bracelet given to a dancer by the King Rama VI is to go on auction in England for and is expected to fetch at least $10,300. According to the British tabloid Daily Mail, the gold bracelet once belonged to King Rama VI. The reserve price is $10,300. Reportedly, King Vajiravudh, or Rama VI gave the necklace to Nadia Yerusalimsky, a Russian dancer, after he was pleased by her performance in a palace in Thailand in 1912. Auctioneer Thomas Plant, from Special Auction Services, Berkshire, claims that it has a great value as it is made from 99.9% gold. The necklace also features seven gold bullet coins, supposedly from the reign of Rama V , King Chulalongkorn (18681910). There are also two stunning strike marks of an elephant inside a Chakra and the royal seal of King Rama V. The dancers grandchildren have decided to put the bracelet up for auction .
