A dhaoine uaisle thr cheann Coiste Chontae Ros Comin ba mhaith liom filte a chur roimh gach inne go Pirc Naomh Brd inniu do Craobh Ceannais Peil Sinsear agus Mionr. Cuirim filte leith roimh na foirne Cumann Naomh Brd, Na Piarsaigh, Mainistir na Bille agus Bel na mBuill. A sincere welcome to all our senior finalists St Brigids, Padraig Pearses, our minor finalists Boyle and Strokestown, their supporters and to all who are here today on the occasion of the biggest day in club football in the county. Todays senior final sees current holders St Brigids put their title on the line against near neighbours Padraig Pearses. From the opening day of the championship last May, St Brigids were hot favourites to retain their title. They smoothly cruised to the final and their form in the knock-out stages has been most impressive. St Brigids will be confident in their ability today but will not take anything for granted. In 2010, on the same day as the County Final, Padraig Pearses were relegated from senior ranks and the mood in the club was very dark. Little did they think that they would be back in a senior final within two years. Success at under-age level coupled with capturing the Intermediate title last year was the boost the club needed. While they enter today as rank outsiders they will be confident in their ability and no doubt being underdogs will be a role that suits them. Like St. Brigids, Boyle will be hoping to retain their title but they face stiff opposition from Strokestown. The standard of competition in this grade over the past number of years has been excellent and I expect that this years final is no exception. 2012 was a year of mixed fortunes for Roscommon football. Our seniors were disappointing in both League and Championship and progress at senior level stalled after significant progress during 2010 and 2011. As a replacement for Des Newton as senior team manager is sought the Board is conscious of the need to appoint a person who can restore confidence among our players and supporters. Despite the disappointment with our senior team
1

we are currently Connacht Under 21 and Minor champions. The performances of our under-age squads were brilliant and one only has to recall the display of the Under 21 team in Tulllamore last May, which saw us come very close to an All-Ireland title, to realise the progress we are currently making at under age level. Our minor panel created history by being the first Roscommon team to retain the Connacht Minor title and while they did not progress in the All-Ireland series they can be proud of their achievements. Hopefully the emerging talent in the county will progress to senior ranks and that our senior team can achieve success at provincial and national level. I wish to thank our sponsors Shannonside FM for their continued support of the Senior Championship. Our relationship with Shannonside has been beneficial for the Board and the excellent coverage afforded our games is much appreciated. Today we are in Pirc Naomh Brd and as usual we have been made feel very welcome by the St Brigids club and officials. The excellent facilities and recent improvements add to the comfort of players and spectators. I wish todays referees Paddy Neilian and Marty Parker good luck today and I would like to thank all our referees for their co-operation in helping to ensure that our competitions are completed on time. Our stewards, gate collectors and club officials deserve a sincere thank you for their work during the year in helping in the smooth running of all our competitions. Their willingness to help the Board is very welcome. Our CCC have a most difficult task in meeting the calendar of games that is drafted at the start of the season. They face many challenges in trying to complete the agreed programme of fixtures. Sometimes difficult decisions are called for to ensure that the fixtures schedule is kept on track but the CCC deserve congratulations in completing our competitions on time and to schedule, despite the many obstacles that they faced during the year. Finally to wish all our finalists good luck today and hopefully we will be treated to two exciting finals. Michal Fathaigh Cathaoirleach Coiste Chontae Ros Comin

Today, the National Anthem will be performed by Claire Murray from Knockcroghery. Claire is a member of St. Dominics GAA Club and is the 2012 Roscommon GAA Scr Sinsear Solo Singing Champion

Music

Todays music is provided by the Raheen Pipe Band. The Band was founded in 1948 by a man called John ORourke and they take their name from the townland of Raheen near Elphin, where the first rehearsals took place in the house of Mark Keaveney. The first public appearance for the band took place on the 1st November 1949 when they marched from Raheen to Elphin to the applause of well-wishers. In the mid-fifties the band was hit by emigration and went into decline but reformed in 1972 and went on to perform at County and Connacht Championship Finals, Parades and many social and cultural events. They have also had the honour of performing for two Presidents, Mary Robinson and Mary McAleese. In 2006 a recruitment drive for new members was successful and funds were raised for new uniforms and equipment. In March 2010 new uniforms were purchased and for the first time kilts, featuring a Roscommon tartan with a blue and gold mix, were introduced. answering the call: why its good to talk

Colin Regan, GAA Community & Health Promotion Manager
The first time I got a call from a member of the Association looking for some advice I was a little apprehensive. I wasnt sure I was adequately equipped to talk about something so personal to someone I didnt know. Then I just took a moment and remembered the training I had gone through. The most important thing was to listen first, offer support and options and get feedback on what they thought was the best course of action. The woman hadnt called about herself; she was concerned about her son. It was nothing major but she wanted to know how she could broach a sensitive issue without upsetting him. He was a prominent member of his team and was enjoying the limelight associated with that. He had been socialising a little too regularly and intensely recently, and it was causing problems at his work. Following a couple of chats we decided on the best way to approach her son: through one of his coaches whom he held in the highest of esteem and she knew he would listen to and respect. She rang me back some time later to say things were great and her son was back to his best on and off the field. One of the things we try to impart at training programmes run by the ASAP (Alcohol and Substance Abuse Prevention) Programme is how to talk to people about issues related to alcohol (or other drugs for that matter). The majority of people in Ireland enjoy alcohol in a responsible and healthy manner. However, there are those that struggle to varying degrees. And should someone in one of our clubs develop an issue we want to make sure they have all the support they need. During 2012 we piloted training for GAA coaches and ASAP officers in SAOR Brief Interventions in counties Roscommon, Longford, Armagh and Clare. A Brief Intervention is a short supportive conversation designed to encourage someone who may be drinking too much to look at their alcohol consumption, and, if so desired, make a positive change in their behaviour. Hopefully, its a skill that will never have to be used. A bit like CPR, I suppose. But should a situation ever arise, youll feel forearmed and in a better position to act appropriately. It could change a life. Id like to commend Roscommon ASAP County Coordinator Noel Collins for his great work to date. Noel is currently planning an event to highlight the positive influence the GAA and sport in general has on peoples lives to coincide with the Western Regional Drugs Task Forces Awareness week in November. More details will be issued to clubs closer to the date. For more information on the work being done across the Association through the ASAP programme, including SAOR (OShea & Goff) Brief Intervention training and the Off the Booze & On the Ball fundraising health challenge for clubs, visit www.gaa.ie/asap

Roscommon Minor Board welcome everyone here today especially the Boyle and Strokestown teams, who will contest the Abbey Hotel 2012 Minor Championship Division One Final. Boyle, who are appearing in their third Division One Final in a row, will be hoping to win back-toback county titles, the first in their clubs history. Strokestown who are appearing in the final of Division One for the first time since 1987, they will be hoping to win their first ever Division One Championship. Well done to both clubs on reaching this stage of the competition and we wish all concerned very best of luck today. I would like to thank all our referees who officiated at underage games this year and I would like to welcome todays Match Officials; our Referee Marty Parker, his umpires, linesmen and fourth official. I wish them the very best of luck. Thank you to all clubs who competed in the competitions run by the Minor Board this year. Our CCC has a difficult task in ensuring that all competitions are completed. The committee deserves great praise in getting league and Championships completed. I would like to express the Boards thanks to all our sponsors of our competitions and our County teams for their ongoing generosity. I would also like to thank the Roscommon and Dublin based GAA Supporters Clubs for their assistance during the year. The success of our minors at Provincial level has made this a special year for us all. It began by winning back to back Connacht Minor league for the first time ever and in July to win back to back Connacht Minor Championship titles ever. To win both in Hyde Park made it all the sweeter for us. I want to thank all the players, management and officials who made this year memorable, possibly with the success of our Minor and U21 this year we have a duty to build on this success and aim to win National titles in the near future. I would like to congratulate our County Under 16 team on winning Ted Webb Shield and to commiserate with them on losing the Fr Manning Cup. Again, I would like to thank the players and management and commend them for their efforts during the year. I would also like to congratulate the young Hurlers of Na Piarsaigh on winning the All-Ireland Division Four File na nGael title. In conclusion I hope everyone has an enjoyable County Final and the very best of luck to everyone taking part in the Senior and Minor Finals. Eoin Lavin - an appreciation

There are times when our preoccupation with playing, winning and losing in sport pales into insignificance. Our Club experienced such an occasion recently, which had a profound impact on our entire community. The early morning of 19th August 2012 changed forever the lives of our Club Chairperson Aidan Lavin, his wife Trudy and their daughter Vicki, as well as their extended family, with the tragic death of their seventeen year old son, and brother, Eoin in a motor accident. Eoin had his life in front of him, having just completed his Leaving Certificate, and having his CAO acceptance to UCD to pursue a Degree in Forestry arrive just over 24 hours after his death. Eoin had been an integral part of Boyle GAA Club since his Primary School days. He played on teams of all age groups from Under 10 upwards. He was on two Keenan Cup and two Garda Cup winning teams as well as winning Under 14 and Under 16 Division One League titles. He was a member of last years Boyle double winning Minor League and Championship winning panels and his display in the League Final of 2011 when he contributed handsomely to the winning of the game will long be remembered. Eoins prowess at club level was recognised by his call up to the County U16 panel last year where he played in the league and championship competitions where they finished as runners-up in both. The Club had strong expectations that Eoin would feature in the 2013 County Minor panel and that he would have a long and successful playing career with Club and County. Our expectations for the quietly spoken Eoin were nothing compared with the expectations of his family, of whom he was their pride and joy. They had, no doubt shared our sporting ambitions, but they had also expected that he would continue to develop into the decent and respectable adult into which he was maturing. Eoin was a man of few words and he was impeccably mannered. He was a very loyal young lad. He was loyal to his family and relatives. He was loyal to his team mates on the various club, school and county teams. He wouldnt miss training or a game under any circumstances. He would be at his fathers side supporting other Boyle teams with whom he wasnt involved. He would be with Aidan when carrying out the various chores in the Abbey Park. On a personal level, I will treasure our trips to the Scr na ng competitions when Eoin competed in the quiz competitions together with Enda Smith and Conor Tivnan. We trained for the quiz en route to the venues and I was amazed by Eoins knowledge of Gaelic Games. The Club has prematurely lost a loyal servant. This loss is nothing compared with the loss to Aidan, Trudy, Vicki and the extended family. Ar dheis D go raibh a ainm dilis. M.D.

Boyle Gaa Club - Underage Development Paying Dividends

The strong emphasis on underage football development over the past decade is paying dividends, with Boyle teams competing in Division 1 of all competitions. The commitment and leadership of our many mentors and Minor Club officers, and support of parents have resulted in the development of the skills of the game in a generation of young footballers. The current crop of minors has evolved from title winning teams at all underage levels in County and Divisional competitions. Todays panel is the most successful in the Clubs history, competing in their third consecutive Division One County Final. They won the Championship and League titles last year and are totally focused on the retention of their Championship title. The tragic loss of their team mate Eoin Lavin in August will be uppermost in their minds today and they will be strongly motivated to take the title for Eoin. Eoins number 10 jersey has been retired for the season as a mark of respect. Five of todays panel: Jason McDermott, Brian Furey, Enda Smith, Tadhg McKenna and Colin Goldrick are starting their third Final. Those involved in their second Final are Luke Brennan, McGrath, Dylan East and Micheal Lavin, Jeff Gunning, Dylan Mattimoe, Joe Sweeney, Shane Filan, Conor Tivnan, Jonathan Regan and Paddy Nally. The Club contributed substantially to County teams in 2012;-Enda Smith, Tadhg McKenna, Brian Furey and Evan McGrath to the Minor team. Evan McGrath, Dylan Mattimoe and Thomas Halligan to the U16s and Brian Conway and Conor Flanagan to the U15 Development Panel. Club representatives in County management included David Casey at U21, Jonathan Conroy and Barry Greaney at minor and Sean Young at U15 level. Encouragement and support comes from the senior club and we couldnt achieve success without the generous sponsorship of Ciaran Phelan of National Automation Limited. There is a strong partnership with the Ladies Club and we wish them every success as they play St Farnans, Sligo in the Connacht Junior Championship Semi Final today.

Manager Vincent Flanagan

Vincent (Vinny) Flanagan, in his third year as Manager of Boyles minor football panel, has devoted his life to the GAA. As a player, he was equally adept in attack or in defence and he was a half forward in the Boyle team which won the County Intermediate title in 1983. He was a leader on the field and it was no surprise that he gravitated towards management and coaching. Vinny has been involved in the management of different panels and age groups over the past decade, including a spell with the senior panel. Vinny is married to Jan (also a Club activist) and their three children are also showing considerable promise as footballers. Vinnies management team includes Jonathan Conroy, his brother Liam, Club Chairperson Aidan Lavin, and James Goldrick.

Captain Tadhg McKenna

Tadhg McKenna is a popular choice as Team Captain for 2012. He leads by example, constantly encouraging those around him to greater efforts. He is an excellent reader of the game and his covering and man-marking takes pressure off his colleagues. His forays into attack are inspirational. Tadhg has recently commenced third level studies at NUIG. He has been on the County Minor panel for the past two years and he holds two Connacht Championship and League medals. Injury interrupted his season this year and his loss was sorely felt in Croke Park in the All Ireland Quarter Final. A second County Minor medal would complete a distinguished career in the minor ranks.

Strokestown Gaa Club - a brief history

The Strokestown GAA Club was founded in 1881. It is one of the oldest clubs in the county. The club won four senior county championships in a row from 1915, 16, 17 & 18 and won further senior honours in 1926, 28 and 33. A 1971 junior championship win lead to an intermediate title in 1977. Senior championships were won again in 92 and 2002 and Intermediate in 2000 & 2010. At under-age the club won Under 15 titles in 1954, 55 and under 15 and minor championships in 1956. An under 12 championship was won in 1981, in 1990 a minor title, and in 95 the under 14 side won county championship and All Ireland Feile titles. The minors won in 1990 and the under 12 team won again in 93. The latter team were the backbone of the under 14 team that won a county title and went on to win the All Ireland Feile in 95. Since 2006, at least one under-age county title has been won each year by club teams and in 2009 the club won at under 12, 14 and minor. A new chapter in the history of our club has now opened. Since 2006 much work has been going on behind the scenes by a dedicated group of volunteers and the fruits of this work can be seen in our new grounds, which was opened this year by Uachtaran CLG Liam ONeill. This was a historic occasion and the club is grateful for the support of everyone who made it possible.

the Gathering ireland 2013

The Gathering Ireland 2013 is a tourism initiative aimed at encouraging people abroad who are Irish born, Irish bred or Irish in spirit back to the country next year to attend some of the many festivals and special events which will celebrate the best in Irish music, art, literature, dance, culture, heritage, sport, film and food. The Gathering is supported by the GAA and full details of the National GAA event will be announced shortly. All County Boards are being asked to play their parts too and Roscommon GAA will be assisting Clubs in the promotion of their events, as well as organising county-wide events. A public meeting, hosted by Roscommon County Council was held in June and people were invited to suggest suitable events and festivals which could be hosted in the county. The suggestions made on the night were compiled by the County Coordinator Richie Farrell and a working group dedicated to progressing, supporting and advising on the Gathering 2013 has met to discuss the ideas that were put forward at the meeting and they will be getting in contact with the relevant groups and individuals shortly. Further area meetings are being organised to provide an opportunity to people who may have not been able to become involved previously and wish to be part of the programme for next year. Groups and individuals who intend organising events are encouraged to log on to www. thegatheringireland.com and register their event for others to see. A number of events have already been registered for Roscommon and these include CBS Leaving Cert Class of 1963 reunion, the Rathcroghan Archaeological Conference and The Siarscal Festival 2013.If people have any problems or issues of access, they can submit the event to the Roscommon Coordinator rfarrell@roscommoncoco.ie for publication on the site. A calendar of Gathering Events will be produced and is scheduled to be launched in January 2013. In order to spread news of our Gathering events, and other events within the county, we are inviting Roscommon GAA supporters abroad to sign up for our special Mailing List by sending their name and location to abroad@gaaroscommon.ie As part of our promotion of the Senior, Intermediate and Junior Football Championships and the Senior Hurling Championship Roscommon GAA ran a Prediction League competition for the months of August and September. Points were awarded for each correct match outcome predict and the three players with the highest score at the end of the competition, which concluded on Sunday September 30th were Dermot Neary (170 points); Peter Carney (170 points) and Joe Kearns (155 points). The trio have been invited to todays Finals to take part in the Prediction League Grand Final where they will be asked to make three further predictions. As well as the title of Prediction League Champion todays winner will also receive the choice of a pair of much sought after tickets to either the Connacht Minor and Under 21 Champions Presentation Banquet or the Supporters Club Awards Banquet, which take place in the Abbey Hotel in November and December respectively. Roscommon GAA would like to thank everyone who took part in the competition and our Supporters Club, who have donated the top prize. Gaa Social initiative

The GAA Social Initiative arose as a result of former President Mary McAleese and her husband, Martin, noticing an absence of older men in attendance at official functions during their many visits to local communities over the years. The President came to the conclusion that many men, because of the changing patterns of life, were falling through cracks in the system and either risking or already experiencing isolation and loneliness. Following further discussions they extended an invitation to the GAA to use its network to engage older men who were not active in local community life and the pilot programme for the GAA Social Initiative was born. The aim of the initiative is simple: to offer a social outlet that is safe and welcoming and that provides a route into, and a place in, the community. So far, 13 clubs in the county have participated in the programme: St. Brigids, St. Dominics, St. Croans, Tulsk Lord Edwards, Roscommon Gaels, ire g, Michael Glaveys, St. Josephs, St. Michaels, Kilglass Gaels, Padraig Pearses, Boyle and Fuerty. The efforts of all the Clubs are greatly appreciated by those involved and they have given many people a new social outlet. A good example of the Social Initiative in action would be the activities of St Josephs. They began last November by organising a Table Quiz as a fundraiser with about one hundred and fifty people attending. They linked with existing community groups in Kilteevan such as Kilteevan Community Development, Community Alert and Kilteevan Cycling Club and arising from this, a trip to Croke Park Stadium and the Dermot Earley Exhibition at the GAA Museum was undertaken as the first social outing. The group consisted of former club players and officials, representatives from the local community groups and community members and all had a very enjoyable time. While the Social Initiative retains a focus on men in the community, it is not exclusive and clubs are encouraged to vary the type of activity they organise to include in their social programme events to which the entire community can be invited. Social events and activities should also be open to those in the community who are not GAA members, as the example from St. Josephs demonstrates. Further examples of club activities can be seen in the Social Initiative Newsletters which can be viewed at www.gaa.ie/socialinitiative. Roscommon GAA Social Initiative Officer, Sen Mannion, will hold a meeting later this month and all Clubs are encouraged to attend and learn more about the Scheme and how they can get involved. Details will be published in the local media nearer the time or alternatively, you can contact Sen any time on 086 838 8756 or social@gaaroscommon.ie or Colin Regan, the GAA Community & Health Promotion Manager, at colin.regan@gaa.ie

St. Brigids and Padraig Pearses - their last County Final meeting
2005 Ruby Oil Senior Football Championship Final
St. Brigids claimed the clubs seventh county title and the first since 1997 with a 2-9 to 0-11 victory over Padraig Pearses before around 2,000 fans at Dr Hyde Park. Denis Whyte hooked over the opening point in the seventh minute and Frankie Dolan responded from a free two minutes later. Senan Kilbride followed up with another pointed free in the 12th minute but a terrific point from Finneran and a welljudged free by Fahy put Pearses ahead after 17 minutes. Four minutes later Tiernan pounced for his first goal when he broke through two challenges and threaded a low shot which bounced and went in off the post. Karol Mannion added a 28th-minute point and was denied a goal three minutes later when his volley from a Mark OCarroll pass was well saved by Thomas Dolan. Pearses hit back with points from Fahy and Finneran to go in level at the interval. Pearses began the second-half impressively and two welltaken points by Fahy looked like they could provide the springboard for a win. However the experience of recent Final appearance stood to the Kiltoom team who worked their way back into the game. Brendan OBrien kicked a vital score and Ian Kilbride powered over a magnificent long-range equaliser from play in the 39th minute. OBrien edged Brigids in front after taking a pass from Mannion, who had moved out to midfield where he strengthened Brigids grip. John Whyte also moved out the field and while it unsettled the full-back line it was type of risk a team needs to take to win a tight county final. Fahy brought the teams level again when he converted a close-range free after 47 minutes. The teams were still deadlocked seven minutes from the end when Frankie Dolan set up Basil Mannion who kicked a tremendous point from 40 metres. Senan Kilbride won the resulting kick-out, found his brother Ian with a pass, who released the ball to John Tiernan. His quick one-two with OBrien split the defence and he rounded Thomas Dolan and drilled the ball to the net. Frankie Dolan closed out the match with two superb points but Pearses never let their heads drop and Sen Fahy and sub Niall Murray added late points. ST. BRIGIDS: Shane Curran; Donal OConnor, Darragh Donnelly, Robbie Kelly, Ger Aherne, Kenny Noonan, Padraig Kilcommins; Mark OCarroll, John Tiernan (2-0), Brendan O Brien (0-2), Darragh Blaine, Ian Kilbride (0-1); Senan Kilbride (0-1, free), Karol Mannion (0-1), Frankie Dolan (0-3, one free). Subs: Basil Mannion (0-1) for Aherne (39 mins), Eoin Mannion for Noonan (47 mins), Jason Kelly for OBrien (58 mins). PADRAIG PEARSES: Thomas Dolan; John Whyte, Damien Donnellan, Brendan Flynn; Enda Barrett, Paul Kelly, Aidan Fallon; Niall Finneran (0-2), David Moran; Emmet Egan, Denis Whyte (0-1), Padraig Kelly; Paul Moran, Sean Fahy (0-7, three frees), Jarlath Egan. Subs: Eddie Egan for Flynn (42 mins), Niall Murray (0-1, free) for D. Whyte (55 mins). Referee: Peter Carney.

meet the managers

St. Brigids: Kevin McStay
A Native of Ballina, County Mayo, Kevin McStay is regarded as one of Mayos greatest ever players and made his debut for the Green and Red of Mayo in 1983. He was a regular starter for the team until his retirement from the inter-county scene, due to injury, after the 1990 championship. During that time he won an All-Ireland Under 21 title in 1983, an All-Star award in 1985 and three Connacht titles. At club level Kevin had a successful playing career with his home club Ballina Stephenites, Ballymum Kickhams in Dublin and Roscommon Gaels. He also had the distinction of Captaining both Ballina (in 1987) and Roscommon Gaels (in 1994) to county championship success. Kevin was coach to the Mayo Senior Team in 1995 and went on to manage the Roscommon Minor Team from 1996 to 1997 and the Mayo U21 team from 1999 to 2001. In 2004 he guided Roscommon Gaels to the Senior Championship title. Kevin is a regular analyst on the Sunday Game and as he has resided in Roscommon town for the last 20 years he has an in-depth knowledge of Club Football in the county. His return to management with St. Brigids, who happen to share the same Green and Red colours as his native Club and County, certainly presented a challenge. He has shown a great appetite for this challenge in bringing with him Benny OBrien (former Brigids great) as assistant manager and Liam McHale (former Mayo great) as coach to form a management team who have successfully guided St Brigids to todays County Final.

Padraig Pearses: John Donoghue

John has been involved in Padraig Pearses GAA club from a very young age. He played at all grades from Juvenile to Senior football and during that time he played in seven Senior County Semi Finals, the 1968 County Final and was a member of the ORourke Cup winning side in 1970. John managed Pearses footballers at all underage and Senior grades. He first became Senior manager at the age of 34 and managed the Senior side in the 80s ,90s 2000s and now in 2012 - our Golden Jubilee year. He has a habit of taking over the Senior footballers when they are rank outsiders, and has built many adult teams based on a core of young footballers; Todays panel includes a 17 year old, three Under 19s, three Under 20s and three Under 21 players. John has also managed Pearses hurlers at all grades from U12 to Senior. He was manger of the first ever U12 champions in 1987 and managed the Senior hurlers to 4 county finals. He has won a total of 13 County championships across the board and is now looking for the clubs first ever Senior Football Championship today. Off the field John has been heavily involved in administration. He became Club Secretary at the age of 20 and Chairman at 21; a position he was elected to 1969 and held at various times in the 70s, 80s and during the last decade. He has also held many other positions John is married to Marie, who herself played Camogie for Roscommon and Connacht. They have six children, who have all played with distinction for Padraig Pearses.

St. Brigids Gaa Club: a Brief history

The name Craobh Cumann Naomh Brid made its first affiliated appearance in 1944, prior to that our games were being played officially under the names Kiltoom, Brideswell or Curraghboy for many years depending on where the most enthusiastic group of players came for at any given time. St. Brigids first major breakthrough came in 1952-53, when the club won the county Junior title and resultant Senior final on the very first attempt. Thankfully we have managed to retain our senior status ever since and Craobh Cumann Naomh Brid has continued to flourish through the years with great strides being made in underage activity and the development of our club grounds and facilities. The Clubs headquarters here at Newpark, Kiltoom, have been continuously developed through the years since the original purchase of five and a quarter acres for the large sum of one hundred and fifteen pounds in 1953. The development of club facilities is of course due in no small way to the fantastic support we get from all of our members, sponsors, supporters, friends and well-wishers. St. Brigids now boasts of three floodlit pitches as well as its Handball Complex in Curraghboy and can feel justly proud of its achievements. When the senior men line out today, they will be aiming to retain their county title for the third year in a row and win their sixth county title since 2005. The senior men will of course be looking to follow in the footsteps of our Senior Ladies who recently won their third successive county title and their seventh county title in the last eight years. We would like to wish the senior ladies the best of luck in their Connacht campaign.

A word from the Chairperson;

On the biggest day in the club scene in County Roscommon we at St Brigids GAA club are delighted to be back contesting the county final again. As we strive to win a three in a row of county championships I would like to compliment the efforts and commitment of our fantastic players who have given everyone in the parish of Kiltoom and Cam such pride and entertainment over the last number of years. I sincerely hope the players hard work and dedication will lead to another county final triumph today. To our management team of Kevin McStay, Benny OBrien and Liam McHale, I would like to acknowledge your efforts and hard work during the year and wish both you and the players the best of luck today. I would like to thank our sponsors, coaches, and volunteers - without your support and hard work days like today would not be possible. To our loyal band of supporters, we look forward to your wholehearted support for our team in a sporting manner. The best of luck to the match officials for the game and I look forward to a fine sporting occasion between neighbouring clubs played in the true spirit of our Gaelic tradition. Finally congratulations to our Senior Ladies on recently winning three in a row of senior club championships, and good luck in your Connacht campaign. Hopefully our men can do likewise today. Michael McDonnell, Cathaoirleach

A look back at the last year:

The past two years have been extremely exciting and eventful times for everyone involved in St. Brigids GAA Club. Not only did our senior mens team win back-to-back county titles in 2010 and 2011, they also won back-to-back Connacht titles. While the memories of our clubs fantastic journey to Croke Park on St. Patricks Day 2011 will be forever ingrained in our minds, focus was quickly changed to the 2011 Roscommon Senior Championship. St. Brigids successfully overcame Elphin in the County Final to retain the Fahey Cup and set out on another run in the Connacht Championship. The team sealed their appearance in the Connacht Final following a win over Sligo Champions Tourlestrane in the Connacht Semi-final. In what was a fantastic day for the parishes of Kiltoom and Cam, we were lucky enough to host the 2011 Connacht Final
29

Coiste Chontae Ros Comin CLG Senior Football Championship Final 2012

in Kiltoom. St. Brigids managed to edge out Galway champions Corofin by a single point and the scenes of joy and elation at this victory will live long in the memory of everyone who was in attendance on what was a historical day for St. Brigids GAA Club. Following the elation of their double winning achievement, the team made the trip to Ruislip in London to play the All-Ireland Quarter-Final against the London champions Fulham Irish. This for us, as for most clubs, was a once in a lifetime opportunity and on a freezing cold December afternoon it was heart-warming to see just how many of our supporters had made the trip to support our senior team, especially in the current economic climate. The lads recording an eight point victory to book their place in another All-Ireland semi-final. The All Ireland semi-final of course was against our near neighbours Garrycastle, who had succeeded in winning the Leinster Championship. Unfortunately it was at this point that our fairy-tale year came to an end, with a two point defeat to Garrycastle. Despite this disappointing end to a wonderful year, our senior team rallied once again and have worked hard to get back into this years county final. The players deserve a lot of credit for the hard work and dedication, which they put in week in week out both in training and matches. It is this hard work and dedication that has ensured once again that they are in their third county final in a row and we wish them the best of luck today. Also, a word of thanks to our wonderful supporters, who come out to support all of our teams and create a wonderful atmosphere no matter where and when. Thank you to our main sponsors Hodson Bay Hotel Group and all of our sponsors and supporters, your continued support is greatly appreciated. Finally, well done to our Senior Ladies team who have retained their county title for the third year in a row and the seventh time in the last eight years. We would like to wish you the very best of luck in the Connacht Championship. ine Martin, PRO.

Padraig Pearses Gaa Club - a brief history

Padraig Pearses GAA Club was formed in 1962 when junior clubs Taughmaconnell and Moore joined forces. The area also includes rural Creagh. The club had no grounds of its own up until the eighties and had to use St. Aidans and Clan Na Gael pitches for our official matches. However after years of planning and fundraising the club carried out a major development plan under a team of progressive young officers. In 1984 Dr. Donal Keenan opened one of the finest clubhouses and grounds in the county at Woodmount, Creagh, Co. Roscommon. The club has developed over a period of time two championship pitches, two training pitches and has recently lit up one of the main pitches to improve training facilities. The club also has two squash courts, club bar, function room, six dressing rooms and a small gym. On the playing front Pearses played our first ever Championship game on the 16th July 1962 against reigning county champions Clan Na Gael in Ballyforan, which they won. They went on to beat Roscommon Gaels in the semi-final but were defeated by St. Brigids in the county final. This final was not played until 1963 due to Roscommon competing in the 1962 All-Ireland final against Kerry. Since then Pearses contested three more county finals in 1968, 2005 and 2008. The club has won all titles in football from U-12 right through to Junior and won the County Intermediate final in 2011. Pearses won an All Ireland Junior 7s Shield in 1997 and won an All-Ireland Feile title in 2005. The club was also the first winners of the under 13 Football Championship in the county. In Hurling the club proudly holds the Centenary Senior Hurling Championship 1984 winning it again in 1987 and has won all titles from U-12 to seniors as well as an All-Ireland Feile in 1997 and 2012. Pearses has the proud record of winning all the underage hurling titles in the one year. In Ladies football, once again the club has won championships at all levels and have to date 15 senior football championships and 2 All-Ireland 7s. In Camogie Pearses have won County A titles in Minor and Junior in 2006 and have also won County B titles in all grades. Off the playing field the club every year competes in Scor and has won numerous Connacht and All-Ireland titles. Pearses have won over 70 titles in all grades. It is a testament to all the hard work that all in Pearses have put in this year that we have two teams contesting Senior County Finals this year. The clubs all round participation makes Pearses the complete GAA club and our loyal players, members and supporters continue to strive to make it better. Note Additional Members of the Padraig Pearses Panel not included on todays team sheet are as follows: Cathal Dolphin, Creagh; Niall Hogan, Creagh; Alan Naughton, Carranure; Adam McManus, Cloneash; Colm Kelly, Rathpeake; Shane Mulvey, Moore; Michael Keniorns, Cullaigh; Ger Egan, Rockland; and David Moran, Ardnaglug The Padraig Pearses Kitmen & Maoranna Uisce are Philip Donoghue,David Kenny, John Kelly and Jimmy Donoghue

Coiste Chontae Ros Comin CLG Senior Football Championship Final 2012

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome our supporters and friends to the 2012 County Senior Football Final. I want to wish our players and management well in our bid to win the Fahy Cup for the first time. 2012 is a special year for Padraig Pearses GAA Club as it marks our 50th anniversary. A lot of great people have worked hard for our club over those 50 years, and it would be a fitting tribute if we can crown our 50th celebrations with an historic win. Padraig Pearses have enjoyed huge success at underage level, and many of these talented youngsters are making the breakthrough to the senior ranks in 2012. Their energy and talent coupled with the maturity of some of our established players has helped Pearses into todays county final. Our team manager John Donoghue and his management team of Aidan Fallon and Frankie Flynn have worked hard all season preparing our players. They got a marvellous response from a very committed group of players all through the year, and arrive here today well prepared for the job in hand. I would like to thank our sponsors Paul Flynn Limited for their generous support in 2012. I also want to pay tribute to all of our club officers and executive members for their tireless work in 2012. I will sign off with a quotation from Padraig Pearse What if the dream comes true? Michel O Doilifin Cathaoirleach.

The Fahey Cup

The victorious captain today will lift the Fahey Cup, named in memory of JJ Fahey RIP, one of the longest serving GAA officials in the country. First elected as Secretary of the Mid Board in 1927, he went on to become Secretary of the County Board in 1935 until 1948. He also held a number of positions in the association outside the county but his term as Treasurer of the Connacht Council from 1935 to 1972 stands out. He was Secretary of the Connacht Council at the time of his death in 1974. In 1947, while Secretary of the County Board JJ purchased a cup for the Senior Football Championship and it became known as the Fahey Cup. The present Cup was designed in 1984 and was first presented at the 1985 County Final to Clann na nGael.

Sunday May 6th was the day that many Roscommon people had waited 30 years for while others had never seen; an appearance by the Roscommon Under 21 Footballers. A crowd of 10,000 people, the majority of which were decked out in primrose and blue, converged on OConnor Park for the meeting with the 2010 Champions Dublin. Roscommon settled well and lead by 0-4 to 0-1 after 20 minutes but Dublin fought back to take a 1-5 to 0-6 lead into the half-time interval. Roscommon began the second half brightly with four unanswered points but once again Dublin fought back and equalised with ten minutes. From then on their size and strength began to make the difference. Dublin added four further points and a last minute goal to claim the title on a final score of Dublin 2-12 Roscommon 0-11 Despite the loss, the performances of the team throughout the campaign has emphasised the progress that has been made at under-age level and will inspire the next generation of players to reach the same heights. Looking back - the year of the broken Crossbar

The 23rd of September 2012 marked the 50th Anniversary of Roscommons appearance in the 1962 All-Ireland Senior Football Final, where they were defeated by Kerry. In what was referred to as a disappointing game by Tony Conboy in The GAA Story - Ros Comin - 1889 to 1990 Kerry scored a goal after 35 seconds, from a long ball that was dropped in to area on front of the goals and fisted to the net. This early goal and an early injury to Gerry OMalley knocked the confidence of the Roscommon players and Kerry went on to score an additional five points before Roscommon got a score. Cyril Mahon was fouled in the square and Don Feely drove the resulting penalty to the back of the net. Kerry scored three further points before the break with John Kelly replying for Roscommon to make it 1-8 to 1-1 at halftime. The second half was a closer affair with the Feely brothers exchanging points with Sheehy and OConnell before two further Kerry points were added. Don Feely pointed three frees and Roscommon also came close with some attempts on goal but it wasnt their day. Final score Roscommon 1-6 Kerry 1-12. An All-Ireland Final appearance by any Roscommon team is a memorable occasion but this Final has been overshadowed by an incident that took place in the Connacht Final between Roscommon and Galway - the case of the broken Crossbar . We enter the game at the start of the second half, both sides were level at the break on 1-3 a piece. Galway re-emerged in top gear and raced into a 2-6 to 1-4 lead. With eight minutes to play and while trying to save a shot from going over Aidan Brady swung from the Crossbar and it broke. During the time it took to set up a replacement Crossbar (which some say took eight minutes, others say 12 and some say a lifetime) both sides made some positional switches but the most telling one was the move of Gerry OMalley to Midfield. When the play resumed he became play-maker in chief with unstoppable runs to set up Cyril Mahon to score Roscommons second goal. Points were exchanged and with the Galway leading by 2-9 to 2-6 Don Feely caught a breaking ball from a Gerry OMalley effort and sent to the back of the net. To tie the game in the dying moments. Galway went on the attack but the ball was overturned and Gerry OMalley went on another counter and set Don Feely up for the winning score. The keeper kicked out the ball and the Referee blew the final whistle to conclude a memorable win. Final score Roscommon 3-7 Galway 2-9.

Fundraising and Finance

Despite the worsening financial conditions in the country the ability of Roscommon GAA run our club competitions and to provide teams with the necessary supports required to compete for honours has not been impacted to quite an extent as may have been expected, or reported from some quarters, due to the prudent financial management by the county Finance Committee the generosity of Roscommon people at home and outside the county. The following is a brief overview of the main sources of income for the board during the year gone by.

Roscommon GAA Members Draws

Since 2006 the annual Roscommon GAA Members Draw has been the main source of funding for Roscommon GAA and over this time it has generated in the region of 1.1 Million Euros. This year the draw was restructured with the number of prizes being increased from 22 to 33, split over three draws. The first in the series of draws was held at half-time in the Roscommon v Armagh All-Ireland Championship game on Sunday, July 1st and the winners were as follows: Top Prize: Bertie Hanly (Seller: Kilmore) Runners-up Prize winners: Caoimhe and Oisn Finan (Seller: St. Croans) John Tiernan and Boyle GAA Club (Seller: Boyle) Sen Mullaney (Seller: Kilbride) Mary Bennett (Seller: St. Barrys) Ciara and Cit Naughton (Seller: St. Dominics) Glenamaddy Community School (Seller: St. Croans) Ivan Cunnane (Seller: St. Croans) Michael Naughton (Seller: St. Dominics) Martin Boland (Seller: Castlerea St. Kevins) Adrian and Tom Daly (Seller: Tremane) The second in the series of three Roscommon GAA Members Draws was held at half-time in the Roscommon v Tyrone All-Ireland Championship game on Saturday July 14th and the winners were as follows: Top Prize winner: Eugene Keaveney (Seller: Ballinameen) Runners-up Prize winners: Sen & Phil OConnor (Seller: Western Gaels) Jimmy Bracken (Seller: Roscommon Gaels) Bob & Jacqui McCormack (Seller: St, Josephs) John Gannon (Seller: St. Barrys) Noel Beirne (Seller: Creggs) Kathleen, Elaine & Brendan Neary (Seller: Elphin) Rory Naughton (Seller: St. Dominics) Tom Hill (Seller: Roscommon Gaels) Jim, Kay & Eileen Walsh (Seller: Castlerea St. Kevins) Jim Glancy (Seller: Shannon Gaels) The Final Draw was held at the Club Ros Comin Race Day at Roscommon Races on Tuesday August 7th and the winners were as follows:

Top Prize Winner Paddy Joe Burke (Seller: Kilbride) Runners-up Prize Winners Sweet Sixteen syndicate (Seller: St Dominics) Declan Geraghty (Seller: ire g) Aine & Harry Curley (Seller: Padraig Pearses) Sinead, Dee & Shane (Seller: Creggs) John Reynolds (Seller: Michael Glaveys) Mike Keena (Seller: Clann na nGael) Sean Costello (Seller: Castlerea St. Kevins) Vincent Canny (Seller: Creggs) Paddy ORegan (Seller: St Michaels) Ted Moore (Seller: Western Gaels) This was the last draw of the series and Roscommon GAA would like to thank everyone who supported the Draw. The proceeds are being used to fund the Roscommon GAA Inter-County teams and Development Squad programme. As well as generating income for the Board the Draw has also benefited Clubs, as they have received commission for exceeding their sales targets. During the life of the draw approximately 440,000 has been paid out to Club. A number of Clubs use the draw as their main source of fundraising for the year and that has paid dividends for St. Dominics and St. Croans in particular, as the received commission cheques of 20,300 and 15,500 respectively in 2012 alone. This year Roscommon GAA was delighted to announce two new sponsorship deals for our inter-county football teams. In January it was announced that local couple John and Lily Murphy were the new sponsors of our Senior Football team. The team Jersey and leisurewear features a logo promoting the Hospice movement and the sponsors, local support groups and Roscommon GAA have been working closely to raise awareness of the services provided by the foundations and to help raise much needed funds for the local branch of the Hospice. The first of these initiatives saw Roscommon Jerseys being offered as prizes in fundraising draws which were held in all Primary Schools throughout the county. Another event was a fundraising challenge match between Roscommon and Louth. We have also used our website and other on-line facilities to publicise details of events such as Sunflower Day. The second sponsorship deal was for the Under 16 Footballers and saw Campion Insurance continue their association with Gaelic Games in the county following their My Club Initiative, which was launched in December. The agreement also saw Campion Insurance become the title sponsors of the Under 16 Club competitions. Roscommon GAA would like to thank two outgoing sponsors Sierra Support Services Group and Warmn Cosy Home and would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the on-going support of the following for sponsoring our Club Competitions and Inter-county teams.

Club Ros Comin

Club Ros Comin was established in February with the main aim of raising funds for the development of under-age football and hurling in the county and to provide much needed finance for the development of training and playing facilities for all county teams. The group have ran a number of fundraising events to date including a Sponsored Cycle, which was organised in conjunction with the Roscommon Inter-county panels; a Bucket Collection on the Bridges entering the county and the Roscommon GAA Evening at the Roscommon Races, which replaced the Annual trip to Punchestown. The event was a very enjoyable social occasion and is sure to return to the Roscommon GAA calendar in 2013. The organising committee would like thank everyone who helped make the evening a success, especially the Roscommon Racecourse Committee and everyone who provided spot prizes. The two main sponsors were Keenan Bookmakers, who provided betting vouchers for all, and John and Lily Murphy, who used the evening to promote awareness and appreciation of the work done by Hospice Foundations.

Supporters Clubs

As well as being a focal point for our supporters both the Roscommon GAA Supporters Club and the Roscommon GAA Supporters in Dublin also make donations to the County Board. The Roscommon GAA Supporters Club have assisted with various inter-county teams throughout the year, including sponsorship of post match meals for County Teams. In November they will host the Medal Presentation for the Roscommon Minor and Under 21 Footballers and Saturday December 8th they will hold their Annual Awards Banquet featuring the presentation of Medals to the All-Ireland Under 21 B Hurling Champions. Nominations for the awards are still being accepted see www.gaaroscommon.ie/awards for details and ticket details for both events will be announced over the coming weeks. For over 30 years the Roscommon Supporters Club in Dublin has been contributing to the development of Gaelic Games at home and in recent years its donations have focused on the County Coaching and Games Development programme. Their fundraisers so far this year have included a very well attended Golf Classic at Rathcore Golf & Country Club.

Following the Roscommon Under 21 football teams qualification for the All-Ireland Final, Roscommon GAA designated May 4th, the Friday before the big game, as Rossie Day. On that day Roscommon people, at home and abroad, were asked to colour the county Yellow and Blue and show their support for the team by wearing their county colours, or by displaying bunting, flags etc. Young and old, at home and abroad, answered the call and the photos on this page represent a very small sample of the colour and excitement that was generated on the day.

Roscommon Gaa handball Round-up

by Brendan McDonagh (Handball Board PRO) All-Ireland Community Games Finals The Roscommon/Kilteevan boys U13 team of Michael Egan, Gareth Delaney, Liam Egan and Dylan Hanley won silver medals in the All-Ireland Community Games Finals in mid May. Facing a strong outfit from the famous Kells academy of Co. Meath in the semi-final, the Roscommon lads took a decisive lead when Michael Egan put on a marvellous display of quality handball to defeat his opponent 15-5, 15-3. In the final they faced a very strong team from Monaghan Town and it wasnt their day as they lost two of their games. 2012 Irish National One Wall Championships There was a record attendance at the 2012 One Wall Handball Nationals in The Citywest International Events Centre, with over 2,000 spectators enjoying a fantastic occasion in early July. 500 players, including a very large number of Roscommon handballers, played 750 matches over 25 grades in a purpose-built arena which comprises eight One Wall Handball Courts and four 40x20 four-wall courts provided the backdrop for a hugely successful event. Some noteworthy performances were from Aengus Cunningham (St.Comans) in the Masters grade who got all the way to the semi-final only to come up against multiple All-Ireland champion Tom Sheridan from Meath, but it wasnt enough on the day with Sheridan taking the match and also the final. Marianna Rushe had a good run in the competition also but was unlucky to loose out to Fiona Shannon in the semis by only two points, 23-21 being the score. Michael Naughton (St. Comans) also done very well to get to the semi-final of the Ruby Masters (65+) Singles Semi-finals before losing to Morgan Darcy from Galway. In the girls 19 and under grade Lauren ORiordan made the final only to lose out to Catriona Casey from Cork but ORiordan still made the official Irish team for the World Championship as a result of her performance. Mount Talbot One-Wall Tournament 2012 Mount Talbot Handball club once again proved themselves to be great hosts as they catered for over two hundred competitors at their annual One Wall Tournament in the Mattie McDonagh Centre in Ballygar and also a new one wall court installed at the Four Roads Community Centre. The level of organising and preparation to detail that went in was second to none. The club must be commended for the very hard work they have done over the last three years, since the club was formed, to encourage both young and old to take up the game and in some cases encourage former players of years gone from villages like Four Roads, Ballygar and Mount Talbot to re-ignite their passion for Handball. St. Comans launch new club website The St Comans Handball Club recently launched their new website to showcase the various achievement of the club in local, national and international competitions and to provide
56

useful information to club members and visiting players alike. The website was designed by local students at Roscommon CBS, lead by Mark Nally. The website can be viewed at www. stcomanshandball.ie World Handball Championships 2012 The eagerly awaited World Handball Championships got under way in Citywest Hotel, Dublin earlier this week. When Ireland last hosted the Worlds in 1994, 1000 players took part. This time round the number of entries has doubled to just over 2000 players which is some achievement in itself. The magnificent Citywest International Arena has seen the construction of thirteen purpose built 40X20 (small courts) and also eight One wall courts for this ten day handball extravaganza which concludes on October 21st. Roscommon is well represented at the event and there will be regular updates on www.gaaroscommon.ie The official send off for the sixty plus Handballers, hailing from various clubs in the county took place in Hannons Hotel, Roscommon on Friday October 5th. County Handball Secretary John Kennedy opened proceedings by welcoming all players and parents to the event. John went on to wish everyone involved a successful tournament and reminded the crowd that Roscommon Handball has a very proud tradition and no doubt come the final days of the championships Roscommon would have players returning with honours. Also present on the night were Fiona Tully and Marianna Rushe from St.Comans who are part of the official Irish Team for Championships. Fiona will compete in girls 13 and under category while Marianna will contest the Ladies Open. Lauren ORiordan who is another Comans player and Team Ireland member will compete in Ladies 19 and under. County Handball Chairperson Liam OCeallaigh then said a few words and again wished all travelling players, parents and supporters the best of luck in Dublin where they will be competing against players from a wide range of countries with America, Canada and Mexico being very well represented. Liam proceeded to outline the strides the County Handball Board are making in introducing GAA Handball to other GAA clubs throughout the county. A fine example of this hard work is the progress that Kilglass Gaels have made in the last six months where they have erected two fine One Wall handball courts in their clubhouse. Under the fine stewardship of Anthony Mahady and Eddie Conboy training takes place during the week at the club and no doubt there will be a future All-Ireland or even World Champion to come out of Kilglass Gaels Handball Club. Former GAA Handball President and current World Handball Committee member Tony Hannon finished off the speeches for the night by updating everyone on the prospect of One Wall handball becoming a full Olympic game sport. Tony concluded by wishing all involved the very best of luck and re-iterated the fact that wearing a Roscommon jersey in a handball court down through the years always put fear into the opponent!

Looking Back - three in a row

Today, St. Brigids are aiming to win their third Roscommon Senior Football Championship in a row. This feat has been achieved by a small group of teams including St. Brigids from 2005 to 2007, Elphin from 1955 to 1957 and Tarmon from 1939 to 1941 but it will be a long time before the Clann na nGael achievement of eight titles in a row in the 1984 to 1991 will be equalled. March 17th 2012 marked the 25th anniversary of their first of four consecutive All-Ireland Club Final appearances and the following is a brief look back on that year, which also saw a number of other remarkable feats achieved. The season began with Clann, fresh from a short break after winning their third Connacht Club Championship title in a row, meeting Ferbane in the All-Ireland Semi-Final at Dr Hyde Park on February 15th. The Leinster Champions were despatched on a scoreline of 0-13 to 1-5 and attention turned to Croke Park and a meeting with Munster Champions St. Finbarrs. Another important game took place a week later as the Clann B (Intermediate) team defeated St. Faithleachs to win the Winter League/Curley Cup. Now, back to the Senior team; The All-Ireland Club Final was played in terrible weather conditions but the Cork side coped with them better and recorded a 0-10 to 0-7 win to claim their third title. The Under 21 Club Championship began in March and the Clann side enjoyed a number of comprehensive wins in the early stages to set up a Semi-final clash with Roscommon Gaels at Athleague. Although it was tougher than their previous encounters they had a 1-10 to 0-7 win to set up a decider with St. Faithleachs. It was a case of more of the same in the Final as Clann ran out 3-9 to 0-7 winners and in doing so they retained their title.. In the Senior and Intermediate Club Championships both Clann teams progressed through the league stages and played the Mid/South Finals on August 23rd. In the first game of the afternoon the Intermediate side defeated Kilbride by 0-8 to 0-7. The Seniors enjoyed a more comfortable win in the second game, defeating St. Dominics on a scoreline of 2-11 to 0-9. In the Senior County Final they had a comprehensive 3-9 to 0-7 win over Kilmore to make it four titles in a row. There was disappointment for the Intermediate side as they suffered a 2-5 to 2-3 loss to Castlerea St. Kevins. There was some cause for celebration later in the year when they defeated the same opposition in the OGara Cup Final. Meanwhile, the Senior team defeated Padraig Pearses to retain the ORourke Cup. The Seniors were also involved in the Connacht Club Championship at that time. They defeated St. Marys of Sligo and Leitrim Champions Gortletteragh to set up a Final meeting with Ballina Stephenites. This was their toughest challenge to date and they hung on for a 0-9 to 0-8 win to capture their fourth Connacht Club title in a row.

Coiste Chontae Ros Comin CLG Senior Football Championship Final 2012

The first appearance in 30 years by a Roscommon team in an All-Ireland Under 21 Football Final on May 6th was the culmination of many hours of hard work over the past few years by various groups of underage Players, Management Teams and by those involved in our Coaching and Development programme. Although the result did not go their way, the Under 21 players and management team brought a great sense of pride to Roscommon people at home and abroad and will no doubt, give Roscommon supporters many more memorable days in the future. The on-going progress and success of these efforts comes at a price and Roscommon GAA would like to acknowledge the support of our main sponsor The Roscommon Herald and the following associate sponsors who, since the All-Ireland Semi-Final win, helped defray the additional costs associated with preparing for the Final:

Coiste iomana - a season in review

By Mike Donnelly (Runai) 2012 has been a good year for under-age Hurling in Roscommon with a number of highlights. On the inter-county scene our Minor team reached a second successive All-Ireland B Final. Following a comfortable quarter-final win over Donegal in Athleague, they had a thrilling victory against Armagh in the Semi-Final, but unfortunately they were beaten by a very strong Kerry team in the Final. Some of the panellists were also members of the county Under 21 team who won the All-Ireland B Final a week later in Thurles in what was an excellent game of hurling. The large number of development squads and representative teams fielded by Coiste Iomana have helped make Roscommon very competitive at Minor and Under 21 level and this year we had teams at all levels from Under 12 to Under 16. The following is a brief summary of their exploits. Our Under 12 team took part in a tournament in Clarinbridge, Co. Galway with the highlight being an excellent win over Ballyhale Shamrocks. At Under 14 level we took part in the Galway U14 Feile in Carnmore. They also took part in the All Ireland B Competition/Tony Forrestal Tournament in Portlaoise where they played three games. We also took part in the Connolly/Cunniffe tournament in Woodmount at the end of September. Our Under 15 team played in the Peter OKeefe tournament in Ballyshannon in where they played excellent hurling and were unlucky to lose the final to Donegal after extra time. They also took part in the Connacht Under 15 blitz in Galway. At Under 16 level we took part in the Niall McInerney Tournament at the end of July. We also took part in the All-Ireland Under 16 B / Adrian Murray Memorial Tournament in Westmeath and reached the plate final. Clubs were also invited to provide players for the Connacht U16 Hurling Academy trials to play Ulster.

The improvements at County level are due in part to the great efforts that are being made on Club scene. Last Saturday we had a very enjoyable Go Games County Blitz Day for U8 & U10 age groups in Knockcroghery. Teams from six Clubs took part. The Under 12 competition saw all clubs playing each other in a round robin league basis with Four Roads coming out on top and St. Dominics, Padraig Pearses and St. Marys, Carrick on Shannon all putting in strong showings. The Under 14 Feile competition was won by Padraig Pearses who beat St Dominics in the County Final. Both teams qualified to represent Roscommon at Feile na nGael 2012, which was held in Dublin, and Padraig Pearses went on to win Division 4. They won all their games and were crowned champions after beating Eoghan Ruadh by 1-7 to 0-8 in the Final, which was played at Croke Park. St. Dominics also did Roscommon proud and only narrowly lost out in their group game to Easkey who went on to win Division 5. The county was represented by Eoghan Coyle from Athleague/Tremane in the Feile skills competition. All clubs in the County (excluding Padraig Pearses and St. Dominics who were at Feile) took part in a new Connacht Under 13 Feile tournament in Woodmount on 7th July. This was a great day of hurling where all clubs played three games. Anthony O Riordan, St. Dominics won the Roscommon Under 16 Puc Fada competition. Both he and runner-up Jason Martin, of St Dominics, represented Roscommon with distinction in the Connacht Final Padraig Pearses became the Under 16 Champions following a 4-12 to 2-12 win over Athleague/ Tremane in an excellent warm-up to then Senior County Final last Sunday. The Minor competition held earlier in the year saw Padraig Pearses take on Roscommon Gaels in the final with the South Roscommon Club securing victory against the Gaels, who were contesting their first final since 1998.

Acknowledgements

Coiste Iomna would like to thank all the clubs, players and mentors who continue to promote hurling within the county. We would also like to sincerely thank all the parents for their great commitment year after year, without which hurling within the County would suffer greatly. We would like to express our gratitude to all the mentors, trainers and all others who were involved in any way with the County teams and particular we would like to thank Caseys Centra and Topaz, Roscommon for their sponsorship of the County Minor Hurling Team. Finally, we would like to thank the Senior Hurling Board; Roscommon GAA Games Promotion Officer, Proinsias Killion and all the Referees for their assistance in running our games.

allianz Cumann na mBunscol Finals

The 2012 Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Ros Comin Hurling Finals were played on Thursday June 7th in a wet and windy Dr. Hyde Park. A total of 12 school teams qualified for the various finals and despite the wet weather conditions crowds of supporters came along to urge on the young hurlers from their local primary schools. Indeed, the spectators were treated to an evening of delightful exhibition of hurling. The players from all 12 schools excelled with their striking, blocking, hooking, solo runs, hand passes and great scores. Ballymurray N.S emerged victorious in an exciting Championship Final where they defeated the gallant Gaelscoil de hde team in the dying seconds of a thrilling game, by scoring a goal that gave them a 2 point advantage. The teams were level at half time. The boys from the Gaelscoil edged ahead all through the second half of this superb final but Ballymurray snatched a victory in the end to earn back to back titles in this section. Ballintleva defeated Newtown for the Division 2 crown while the boys from Lisaniskey defeated Tiisrara in Division 3. Fuerty took Division 4 title over Tarmon. In the 2 Teacher section Feevagh defeated Mount Talbot in a local thriller while Runnamoat emerged victorious over Rahara. The 2012 Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Ros Comin Football Finals took place over a number of evenings with the majority on Tuesday June 12th and Wednesday June 13th in Dr. Hyde Park. Like the Hurling Finals, the skills demonstrated by all players were a tribute to the hard work undertaken by their teachers, Clubs and the Roscommon GAA Games Development Part-time Coaches One of the highlights of the Finals was the Top Schools decider between Cornafulla and Ballybay Cornafulla got off to a blistering start scoring a goal and a point in the first 3 minutes however the rest of the half belonged to Ballybay and were it not for some fine saves from the Cornafulla goalkeeper the gap would have been much greater at the break. At half time it stood Ballybay 1-4 Cornafulla 1-1. During the interval the wind and rain came and this make life difficult for the Ballybay defence and goalkeeper. The action went from end to end but midway through the second half Cornafulla scored three goals in five minutes. To their credit Ballybay battled to the very end but Cornafulla prevailed on a scoreline of 5-7 to 2-9. The winners of the various sections were as follows: Two Teacher 7s - Girls Two Teacher 7s - Boys Oliver Donagher Trophy (3/4 Teacher - Boys) 3/4 Teachers - Girls Top School - Boys Top School - Girls Large School - Boys Large Schools - Girls Aughrim NS Granlahan NS Ballymurray NS Ballyleague NS Roxboro NS Cloonfad NS Cornafulla NS Creagh NS

These Finals marked the end of another very exciting year for Gaelic Games in our Primary Schools with nearly 80 Schools participating from throughout the length and breadth of the county.

Scr Season in review

By Alastair Beegan
Although the Autumn marks the conclusion of most GAA competitions it also signals the beginning of Scr, in its various forms. The following is a look back on Scr activities during the 2011 -12 season St. Marys Hall, Ballyleague was the venue for Scr na bPist 2011, which took place over two nights in October. With over 80 entries from 20 different schools and clubs, both nights proved very busy. The Trth na gCeist was held on a separate afternoon, with Clann na nGaels Tom Nolan, doing an excellent job as Quiz Master. Next up, in November, was Scr na ng and again it was strongly contested within the county, despite a small drop off in participating clubs from 22 to 18. The Dean Crowe hosted an excellent County Final and it was encouraging to see the St. Croans and St. Michaels clubs competing strongly and reaching this stage. The Connacht Final in Castlebars TF Royal Theatre, saw Roscommon emerge with the greatest share of the spoils. These wins came courtesy of St. Barrys Pauric Halpin, in Recitation, and two from the St. Dominics Club; their Ballad Group and their Solo Singer Aisling Byrne. Although All-Ireland success did not come our way the three acts performed excellently and did Roscommon proud. In Scr Sinsear we saw a much improved participation due in no small part to the great efforts of the St. Michaels club. Although there were not enough entries to hold semi-finals, a healthy County Final was held before a packed Elphin Community Centre. The Club of the Year Award proved a close battle but in the end St. Dominics took back the title from Elphin. At the Connacht Final, which was also held in Elphin, the St. Dominics Ballad Group came out as champions and progressed to the All-Ireland Final in The INEC Killarney, where they lost gallantly to the famed Clara of Offaly. Wed also like to congratulate Catherine Hanly on retaining the Connacht Sean-ns Dancing title. Although this competition is just ran on a pilot basis in the province, and does not progress to All-Ireland level, it has proved to be very successful and well supported.

Tom Harneys sudden passing brought great shock and sadness throughout his beloved Cornafulla / Clann na nGael and much further afield. Tom was a gentleman in every sense of the word, a fantastic Scr competitor and a great Gael. His presence, personality and sincerity will be sorely missed. N bheidh a leithid ann ars.

Scr na ng - take up the challenge

As you have read above, the Football and Hurling seasons may be drawing to a close but there are still lots more GAA titles up for grabs off the field.

the season in review Part two

June

The following is the secong part of our look back on the inter-county scene and features the months of June, July, August and September

Saturday 23rd The Minor Footballers began the defence of the Connact Championship with a comfortable 4-15 to 2-3 win over Leitrim in Pirc Sen Mac Diarmada, Carrick on Shannon. Saturday 30th Tuam was the next destination for the team to face Galway in a Connacht Minor Semi-Final. In what was a tense encounter the team came away with a two point, extratime victory to move a step closer to retaining the Connacht crown. Final score Galway 1-9 Roscommon 1-11 July 1st On what was a busy weekend for supporters, Dr. Hyde Park was the venue for the AllIreland Senior Championship game with Armagh and to top off a great weekend Roscommon scored a 1-11 to 1-9 win over the men from the Orchard County. Despite being 1-7 to 0-5 down at half-time a Senan Kilbride goal in the opening minute of the second half helped turn the tide. A hard working performance from the whole team deprived Armagh of possession and some fine points led to a two point win. The draw for round two of the qualifiers took place on the morning of July 2nd and we received possibly the toughest draw - a meeting with Tyrone. Roscommon received home advantage for the game which was fixed for Saturday the 14th July 14th The Senior Footballers bowed out of the 2012 Championship following a 1-16 to 0-8 loss to Tyrone. The visitors held a 0-7 to 0-4 lead at the break but a penalty three minutes into the second half made a repeat of the previous weeks comeback difficult and the 2010 Ulster Champions ran out comfortable winners. July 15th Despite two Championship matches in the space of a week. Dr Hyde Park was in excellent condition for the Connacht Finals. The Minors defeated Mayo in the opening game of the day by 0-10 to 0-8 and in doing so they retained the Connacht title for the first time in history. In the Senior encounter Mayo also retained their title by defeating Sligo August 5th Next stop for the Minors was Croke Park, where they faced Munster finalists Kerry. Roscommon started well but it was Kerry that held a 1-5 to 0-5 half time advantage following a late goal. It was a lead that they held for the second half despite two Thomas Corcoran frees in injury time which reduced the

difference to a point. Final score Roscommon 0-11 Kerry 1-9 August 11th saw the Minor Hurlers enter the Championship and they enjoyed a 2-16 to 0-6 win over Donegal at Athleague August 15th Because of the Under 21 Hurlers excellent record in recent years they received a bye to the Connacht Final. Despite the lack of match practice they defeated Mayo to retain the title on a scoreline of 3-14 to 3-7 August 18th Ballinamore was the next destination for the Minors and in what was a tense, tight, game they overcame the challenge of Armagh with by 3-14 to 2-13 to set up an AllIreland Final clash with Kerry August 25th A week later it was the turn of the Under 21 Hurlers to take the field in Ballinamore and they enjoyed a five point win over Fermanagh to book an All-Ireland meeting with Kildare Roscommon 1-20 Fermanagh 1-15

September

September 8th was the second All-Ireland Final appearance of the year for a Roscommon team as the Minor Hurlers travelled to the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick to take on Kerry. Unfortunately it wasnt to be their day as they were overpowered by a strong Kerry side. Final score Roscommon 1-7 Kerry 4-17 September 15th It was a case of another Saturday, another All-Ireland Final for a number of the younger members of the Under 21 Hurling panel as the team faced Kildate in the Bord Gais Energy All-Ireland B Final at Semple Stadium. In what was one of the most exciting games of the year, in any grade or code, Roscommon took an early hold on the game and led by 2-4 to 0-4 after 12 minutes but the lead did not last for long as Kildare replied with two goals in 90 seconds. The game ebbed and flowed for the remainder of the with Roscommon taking a 2-9 to 2-7 lead into the break. A goal from Naos Connaughton early in the second half inspired a rally and they led by 3-12 to 2-9. Kildare were down but not out and scored 1-6 without reply in a 12 minute spell to take control of the game with a little over ten minutes to play. The

67

Coiste Chontae Ros Comin CLG Senior Football Championship Final 2012

Roscommon lads showed great character and determination to fight back two points from Robbie Fallon and one from Noel Fallon tied the game. Roscommon then took the lead again with a pointed free from Robbie while Naos Connaughton added a point from play. Kildare launched a final attack and Noel Fallon made another excellent save to deny a goal-ward shot. The resulting 65 was pointed by Liam McDonagh and from the puck-out referee David Copps blew the final whistle and it ended Roscommon 3-17 Kildare 3-16. Niall Kilroy received the Man of the Match award for his all-round display, which included six points and captain Peter Kellehan received the Under 21 Shield from GAA President Liam ONeill. The win rounded out quite a successful year for our inter-county teams: All-Ireland Under 21 B Hurling Champions Connacht Under 21 B Hurling Champions - title retained Connacht Under 21 Football Champions - second title in three years Connacht Minor League and Championship - titles retained, for the first time in history Hastings Shield Winners Ted Webb Shield Winners Once again, Roscommon GAA would like to thank you for your support throughout the season
