CIS Professional Development Series Continues at MCA

December was certainly an active month for the CIS students at Milford Central Academy. We had some exciting guest speakers share their career journeys with us
Connecting community resources with schools to help young people successfully learn, stay in school, and prepare for life.
We believe that every child needs and deserves the Five Basics: 1. A one-on-one relationship with a caring adult 2. A safe place to learn and grow 3. A health start and healthy future 4. A marketable skill to use upon graduation 5. A chance to give back to peers and community.

as a continuation of our professional development series. Our first guest was Judy Caroleo from Reading Assist. She discussed how the brain receives information when reading and shared common problems with comprehension. Her information was very helpful and informative. She facilitated the discussion in an extremely innovative manner that allowed students to act out various parts of the brain to demonstrate how it responds to receiving and interpreting information.

care. The students learned that protection from the sun and moisturizing ones skin is important at every age and is not only something adults should consider. Beyond speaking to the class, Sue-Brown offered some much needed and well-deserved pampering for our teachers. As a gesture of appreciation from Communities In Schools at MCA, complimentary massages were offered to the teachers and administrators. We value their efforts and acknowledge the importance of our partnership with them in the schools! We would also like to thank Sue-Brown Henry for being a great speaker and for being a great example of the power of partnering with your childs school. Ms. Henry, thank you for donating your time and sharing your expertise to further the success of CIS at MCA. assistance for their families during the holiday season. Through a generous donation from Louis and Kathryn Ervin, we donated over 65 winter clothing items such as hats, coats, scarves, snow-suits and blankets. Some of the items that were not needed at the academy were taken to children who are in a homeless/transient situation at Benjamin Banneker Elementary School. Although Banneker is not a Communities In Schools site, we support helping the entire community. The Ervin family also donated over $500 in gifts and groceries to a family in need who is a part of the Communities In Schools program at Milford Central Academy. The family wishes to remain anonymous, but the mother said, Thank you for the wonderful gifts you provided for my family. I cried after the gifts were delivered and when we opened everything Christmas morning. I try so hard for my family, but things are difficult right now so it is comforting to know that good people still exist in the world.

CIS is looking for Volunteers: YOU can make a difference!!

YOU specifically have something valuable to contribute to a CIS student at Milford Central Academy! Paying it forward only takes a little bit of your time, but yields long-lasting and positive results. Our current needs include opportunities such as: Lunch Buddies- Eat lunch once a week with a student. Sharing good conversation with friends over a meal is something we all love. Lunches are in 30 minute segments. Which lunch schedule works best for you? Lunch A- 10:45-11:15; Lunch B- 11:30-12:00; Lunch C- 12:15-12:45. Homework Helper- Many students just need that one-on-one attention for their ahha moment. Students could benefit from your help with completing homework and/or class assignments, gaining confidence in reading or math, and basic tutoring. Students can work with you one-on-one or in small groups. Homework helpers are primarily needed on Fridays from 9:009:30am (girls class) and 12:45-1:15pm (boys class). Other times can be discussed on an individual bases. Career Speakers- Come tell us your professional and personal journey. Many times success seems like a distant dream instead of an attainable reality. Sharing your journey helps put things into perspective for our students. Contact Kia Lockhart to schedule a time to speak to our class.
