as a continuation of our professional development series. Our first guest was Judy Caroleo from Reading Assist. She discussed how the brain receives information when reading and shared common problems with comprehension. Her information was very helpful and informative. She facilitated the discussion in an extremely innovative manner that allowed students to act out various parts of the brain to demonstrate how it responds to receiving and interpreting information.

care. The students learned that protection from the sun and moisturizing ones skin is important at every age and is not only something adults should consider. Beyond speaking to the class, Sue-Brown offered some much needed and well-deserved pampering for our teachers. As a gesture of appreciation from Communities In Schools at MCA, complimentary massages were offered to the teachers and administrators. We value their efforts and acknowledge the importance of our partnership with them in the schools! We would also like to thank Sue-Brown Henry for being a great speaker and for being a great example of the power of partnering with your childs school. Ms. Henry, thank you for donating your time and sharing your expertise to further the success of CIS at MCA. Connecting community resources with schools to help young people successfully learn, stay in school, and prepare for life.
We believe that every child needs and deserves the Five Basics: 1. A one-on-one relationship with a caring adult 2. A safe place to learn and grow 3. A health start and healthy future 4. A marketable skill to use upon graduation 5. A chance to give back to peers and community.
assistance for their families during the holiday season. Through a generous donation from Louis and Kathryn Ervin, we donated over 65 winter clothing items such as hats, coats, scarves, snow-suits and blankets. Some of the items that were not needed at the academy were taken to children who are in a homeless/transient situation at Benjamin Banneker Elementary School. Although Banneker is not a Communities In Schools site, we support helping the entire community. The Ervin family also donated over $500 in gifts and groceries to a family in need who is a part of the Communities In Schools program at Milford Central Academy. The family wishes to remain anonymous, but the mother said, Thank you for the wonderful gifts you provided for my family. I cried after the gifts were delivered and when we opened everything Christmas morning. I try so hard for my family, but things are difficult right now so it is comforting to know that good people still exist in the world.

Nancy conducted free Satin Hands treatments, did make-up consultations, and gave away lots of cool products. Nancy, thank you for caring about our teachers and students. We are glad to have you as our

Patrick Mace is a 9th grader at Milford Central Academy. Patrick approached Site Director, Kia Lockhart with an idea about how he could implement the fifth CIS Basic, A chance to give back to peers and community. He enjoys working with computers and showed interest in the business technology class with a teacher/mentor, Mr. Harris. Patrick has demonstrated leadership qualities which now enable him to leave the CIS class 20 minutes early once a week to assist students who are struggling to complete their technology/graphic design projects. Patrick hopes to be a Computer Programmer and enjoys learning about new technology trends. Patrick, thank you for being a student who articulates the CIS vision through your actions.
