Year in Focus 2011
Year in Focus 2011
In memoriam Chris Hondros 1970-2011 The risks run by news photographers were brought into sharp and painful relief this year with the death of Getty Images Chris Hondros, who died as result of injuries sustained in a mortar attack by forces loyal to Libyan strongman Muammar Gaddafi. Chris died in a field hospital in the port city of Misrata on 20 April 2011. His body was flown home to New York on Easter Sunday and he was buried next to his father in Fayetteville, NC a week later. We mourn him today as deeply and with as much sorrow as in those first hours and days in April. Chris documented a wide range of stories from his base in New York City, where he was our Senior Staff Photographer, but deep down he was always driven to examine the darker side of human nature. He made a dozen trips to Iraq to document the war in that country, and went several times to Afghanistan. He covered the worlds hotspots for Getty Images and helped give shape and vision to our photography and create a culture of news- gathering that defines our organisation today. His work from Liberia earned him a Pulitzer Prize nomination, and he was awarded the Robert Capa Gold Medal for Courage for his dramatic photographs of the shooting of civilians by US troops in Tal Afar, Iraq in 2005. Even though Chris saw and documented the worst in people, the way he lived his life was the opposite: good and soulful, genuine, full of promise. Everything he did, he did with love, compassion and a deeply held belief that his work mattered and was important to share with the wider world. All of us here draw comfort from the fact that his legacy of pictures will endure and will continue to show us how one of the best and brightest lived. Pancho Bernasconi, editor and friend
Foreword An editorial photograph is so much more than pixels or ink on a page. It is the result of a photographers ability to capture a critical moment in time and of an editors unique judgement to give it the opportunity to reach a wider audience. Our photographers mission is to bring each and every situation to life, in a way that empowers a publisher to communicate a deeper understanding of the world. As ever, our teams of photographers and editors have been at the centre of the events that matter, whether thats in the field of battle, the field of play, the red carpet, or the stage front. 2011 will go down in history as a turbulent year. Nations have risen up against long-standing dictators, the raw power of nature has crushed towns and cities across several continents, and the debt crisis still threatens global financial stability. Throughout this period of change, many lives have been lost, homes destroyed and livelihoods ruined; but from this turbulence, we have witnessed the green shoots of democracy, the shift in global economic power to emerging nations and the irrepressible force of the human spirit, which has enabled communities to endure and rise up from the worst of disasters. As always, mans indomitability has been showcased in the sporting arena, with records broken and champions crowned. We have basked in the glamour of film, music and television; we have lapped up celebrity intrigue and we have been awed by the spectacle of live performances. The 2011 Year In Focus book showcases just a small selection of our award-winners and photographers and the stories they covered. We thank all members of the team for their skill and dedication in the pursuit of excellence. Their talent and experience sits at the core of our business.

arab spring
When a young Tunisian street vendor set fire to himself outside a local municipal office in December 2010, he sparked an uprising that ripped through the Arab world. In a succession of countries Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Bahrain, Syria, Yemen vast crowds descended on the public squares to protest against economic misery, hopeless unemployment and authoritarian rule. This Arab Spring has seen the toppling of some entrenched, corrupt dictatorships, but the outcome of the revolutions remains unclear. Protestors are now returning to the streets to vent their fury at the caretaker authorities, accusing them of shielding elements of the old regimes and stifling their demands for change.

When a full-scale war between rebels and loyalists erupted, curious civilians began to document their rebel movement with their mobile phones, instantly updating the world on events as they transpired. While I worked to cover this story in a more traditional sense, I was also drawn to using my iPhone as I have in Afghanistan. Small mobile phone cameras are innocuous and enable a far greater intimacy with a subject. It was a liberating experience; to point and shoot with a small device, unhampered by camera bags full of gear and reacting to the world around me.

aids
Ukraine has the highest concentration of HIV-positive people anywhere in Europe. In 2005 it experienced the fastest acceleration in infection rates in the world, mostly as a result of IV drug use: six years on, sexual transmission accounts for half of the new cases. In the post-communist era the country has had a succession of ill-resolved governments embroiled in corruption. The consequences for those who are HIV positive have been dire. Each change in government involves a new tender war between the major pharmaceutical companies as they struggle to outbid and out-bribe each other as they jostle for the attention of the new Ministry of Health. Each time a new government comes to power, access to life-saving anti-retroviral therapy stalls.

natural disasters
Japans most powerful earthquake since records began struck on 11 March, spawning a ferocious 40-metre tsunami that engulfed large parts of the northeast of the country and also damaged the Fukushima nuclear plant, threatening a nuclear catastrophe. More than 20,000 people were reported dead or missing: In the 65 years after the end of World War II, this is the toughest and the most difficult crisis for Japan, said the Prime Minister, Naoto Kan.

franK worth
Frank Worth had charm. A close friend to screen icons like Rita Hayworth, Jayne Mansfield and Frank Sinatra, he was a welcome presence amid the cut and splice of the Hollywood set. His A-list connections gave access to the candid moments of these most public of people. Despite this off-guard access, Worth always managed to keep the stars gloss and glamour intact.
