The Mt. Laurel Sun

When Hurricane Sandy made
landfall last week, she unleashed
havoc across the state.
Mt. Laurel, compared to other
municipalities, generally fared
well, said township officials, but
many residents endured several
days of no power.
As of last Thursday, 2,000 resi-
dents of the approximately 5,000
to 10,000 who had been affected at
the height of the storm were still
living in the dark, according to a
PSE&G estimate released by the
Mt. Laurel Police Department.
Ramblewood, Larchmont and
Rancocas Woods were hit hard
from the storm, said Chief of Po-
lice Dennis Cribben.
According to Mt. Laurel
Schools Spokeswoman Marie
Reynolds, Parkway School in the
Ramblewood section was still
running on a generator and a two-
hour delay on Thursday, a day
after the rest of the district, as
well as Lenape High School, head-
ed back to their classrooms.
Hartford School and Larch-
mont School were the only two
other buildings that experienced
a loss of power following the
storm, said Reynolds.
Mt. Laurel Schools fared well
in the storm, compared to many
around us, she said.
Besides the power loss, the
township suffered from downed
wires, felled trees and out traffic
lights.
There were at least eight inci-
dents of downed wires, Cribben
said, from what was tracked due
to the hazards involved.
Twelve traffic lights went dark,
he added.
Residents took caution and
heeded warnings, with no report-
ed injuries from Sandy.
The roadways were kept pret-
ty clear during the storm,
Cribben said, with most residents
staying home.
We were happy about that,
he said.
The Mt. Laurel Municipal Util-
ities Authority (MUA) reported
no problems with water or sewer
throughout the township, said Lt.
Paul Modugno, public informa-
tion officer for the Office of
Emergency Management.
So how did the townships dam-
age compare to Hurricane Irene
last year?
For Mt. Laurel, Hurricane
Sandy involved less flooding and
water damage due in part to the
efforts of DPW And MUA, such as

I am glad that Mt. Laurel did

this devastating storm, said
Mayor Jim Keenan by email last

Keenan, too, had lost power in

A police release last week of-

the YMCA of Burlington and

V
eterans Day traces its history
to the end of World War I.
Then known as Armistice Day,
Congress, in the mid-1950s, formally
made it Veterans Day. Its one of those
days of the year that has, or should
have, special meaning for every Ameri-
can.
The sacrifices made by the men and
women of the Armed Services are
well-documented. They protect the na-
tion every day. Without their service,
America isnt the land of the free.
We encourage everyone to not only
recognize veterans on this day, but also
to make a commitment to do some-
thing tangible in their honor.
There are numerous groups that
help veterans and their families, espe-
cially those who have fallen on hard
times. Volunteer for one of these
groups, or make a donation.
Or get involved in a different organi-
zation that is trying to better your com-
munity. Help to feed the hungry or ad-
vance research into a deadly disease.
Gather clothing and other items and
drop them off at a center that will use
them to help the less fortunate. Do
something to make a difference, to give
back to those around you who can use
a helping hand.
We are heading into the holiday sea-
son. Its the easiest time of the year to
get involved because there are so many
ways to give.
In the coming weeks, we invite
everyone who is holding a drive or
fundraiser to contact us with the de-
tails so that we can share them with
the entire community. Give us the days
and times, the drop-off locations and
the items requested, and well do the
rest.
And then we invite our readers to
jump in with generosity.
We can never say thank you too
many times to our veterans. We can
never fully repay them for what they
have done and continue to do for us.
But we can honor them by doing
what we can to make a difference in
our communities.
in our opinion
