Welcome to the November/December
Senior Spirit, the official newsletter of
Berkeley Senior Services. This is our
final newsletter for 2012! It has been a
great year for Berkeley Senior Services.
Our board members, volunteers, and
staff are all dedicated to our mission
keeping seniors and disabled citizens
living in their own homes where they can
continue to be contributing members of
our community. This can be
accomplished only through the support
that we have received throughout the
community. Those of you, who may have
the opportunity to talk with our legislators,
county council members, city council
members, business and community
leaders, please thank them for
supporting Berkeley Senior Services.
Jen Stanley did an outstanding job as our
board president during the past two
years. She will be missed. We welcome
Bill Cornett as our new board president
for the upcoming year.
Best wishes for the Holiday Season.

NEVER TOO OLD TO COMPETE
This was the 27th year the National Veterans
Golden Age Games were held. It is the
culmination of a years preparation using the
VAs recreational rehabilitative therapy. The
Veterans Affairs has the largest of this
program for veterans the nation over. It
began with a few veterans in the West, and
now, over 700 veterans gather to compete
against each other and to renew old
acquaintances.
A veterans Affairs Medical Center
usually hosts the Games; sometimes, a few
facilities will combine their efforts to host the
Games. Each veteran who attends must pay
his or her own way there, and the hosting VA
provides meals and entertainment for them.
This year, the Games were held in St. Louis,
MO...often called the Gateway to the West.
From the Berkeley Senior Center, Su
Carroll, a 20-year Navy veteran, went to
compete in Dominos and Swimming. This
was her 12th year to compete in the Games.
She was able to take her very own cheering
section with her in the person of Sy Blye.
Each of them had to come up with the means
to attend, raising funds and saving monies.
There were many venues to compete
in...air rifle, golf, 9-ball, bowling, and much
more. All venues were divided into groups by
age: 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-
84, and 85 and up. Dont be too surprised to
know some of the more senior veterans can
outdo some of the younger ones. Some
competitions are also divided between the
genders. There are competitions for those
ambulatory, those who are wheelchair bound,
and those with visual impairments. All are to
encourage the veterans to enhance their
physical capabilities as much as possible,
challenging them to keep as physically active
and fit, and for as long as possible.
In 2004, those who won medals at the
Games were automatically eligible to
compete in the National Senior Olympics,
and several veterans did compete in the 2005
Senior Olympics. Su Carroll was among the
first group of veterans who were not
representing their respective states, but
rather, veterans from all over the country.
Even though the Games are pretty
well established, there are also newer
activities for the veterans to compete in.
When the Games were held in Hawaii a
couple of years ago, many veterans learned
how to propel an outrigger. This year, the
javelin throw was added to the competitions.
A new game, Bullet Ball, was introduced to
the veterans as an extracurricular activity. It
is a game two can play either sitting down or
standing. It is where the players bat a ball
across the table towards each other, and is
perfect for those who are working on eye-
hand coordination.

NEVER TOO OLD TO COMPETE (cont.)
The veterans feel the best thing about
the Games is the possibility that they might
run into old comrades, something that seems
to happen at least once during each of the
Games. As the Games grow, so do the
reconnections. As the Games continue to
grow, the number of veterans competing also
grows. The capabilities of the veterans has
also increased. When Carroll first attended in
2001, she was only one of nine women
veterans. This year, there were some 75
women veterans there.
Aside from their own competitions,
they were able to watch other teammates at
their competitions. There were also outside
trips that many of the competitors were able
to enjoy. Best of the extra activities was the
Bingo Game. All prizes were donated, and
some of them were really great, including a
brand new computer with all the bells and
whistles. If the prize was too big for the
veteran to take on the airplane home, the VA
would ship it home for them.
All in all, the Games were the rousing
success they are every year. Su Carroll
returned home with a gold medal for the 50-
yard swim, and a silver medal for the 25-yard
swim. She bombed in Dominos! Next year,
she hopes to do better when the Games will
be held in Buffalo, NY.
The Silver Haired
Legislature, a group of
representatives, all age
60 or older, and elected
by their peers, lobbies
the Legislature on issues
important to the states
senior citizens.
Sponsored by the state
Bureau of Senior
Services, it brings
together senior citizens interested in West
Virginia politics and policies. The Silver-Haired
SILVER-HAIRED
LEGISLATURE
(2012-13)
Legislators will convene October 31st through
November 2nd 2012, at the Capitol. All
members have a goal in common: to position
Legislation concerning seniors in the spotlight
of state lawmakers.
While some may view the group as
simply a mock legislature, lawmakers regard
them as a valuable resource. The group comes
together to discuss, debate and report on issues
that relate to senior citizens. Past state
Legislatures have actually taken action on the
reports and recommendations of the Silver-
Haired Legislature.
The topic for the Health and Human
Resources Committee focused on the problems
in Nursing Homes: Mandatory drug testing and
background checks for the staff, and having
only qualified LPNs and RNs administer
medications. Also, tighter security for anyone
entering a nursing home and have proper ID;
i.e. name tag or badge, change the wording
regarding staffing to increase the required
number of staff, and to have impromptu
inspections and reports.
Agriculture Committee focused upon
increasing the Food Voucher Bill, support for
Coal Resolution, and natural gas drilled and
supplied in West Virginia.

ADULT DAY SERVICES

Celebrating 17 Years!
Supporting Families in Adult Caregiving

Program Manager: Kathy McIntyre, BSW, LSW (15+) Ext. 114
Activities Coordinator: Katherine Donovan(5+) Ext. 118
Activities Assistants: Dale Bradfield (10+), Jackie Galbraith
(New!), Deana Keplinger (5+), Sarah Melchek, Shelley Lynn
(5+), Lily Pryle, Jessica Seibert, Gloria Simmons, and
Kathleen Teter.
Adult Day Services provides family caregivers with respite (a
break from the constancy of care, attention to rest, take care of
errands, or do what they need to refuel their physical and
emotional energies).
While they do so, their assisted adult loved one receives safe,
supervised assistance with activities they enjoy, as well as
personal care if needed. They can join the congregate program at
the Senior Center or we can come to them at home.
Family caregivers also are provided with free information and
referral services, care counseling and support groups, and
educational trainings.
A caregiver resource library of books, videos, and computer
access is provided, as well as a modest lending closet of durable
supplies.
Our trained and experienced team of staff and volunteers are
dedicated to providing care and assistance as they would their
own family member, many of whom have been or are family
caregivers themselves.
Theres a little known ritual we have during our monthly staff
meeting. On occasion, when a person we have cared for passes
away, we light a candle during the meeting and share our
memories of that participant as a way of putting closure to our
experience and to honor the one for whom we cared (both
physically and emotionally).
If you are a family caregiver who needs a bit of a break in
caregiving each month or each week, or if you would like your
assisted loved one to benefit from meaningful activities and
socialization, give us a call or stop by for more information.
Music in Caregiving
November is National Alzheimers Disease Awareness Month
and National Family Caregiver Month. We are also entering a
very busy time of the year, adding additional stress to busy family
caregivers.
Music is being given a lot of attention recently as beneficial to
many folks, including those with advanced dementia. In fact, for
some folks, they have experienced an awakening when
reintroduced to familiar music of the past. Hospices are now
hiring Music Therapists to aid in comfort and quality of care.
I came across a flyer that did not indicate the source but I
believe it was generated by Hospice of the Panhandle. In
discussing Music Therapy, the document stated that the basic
goals were to decrease anxiety, decrease agitation, reduce
perception of pain, compliment pain interventions, reduce
shortness of breath, decrease nausea and vomiting, decrease
isolation and loneliness, address spiritual needs, address
depression, and increase quality of life.
I believe music can be beneficial for the family caregiver as
well for many of the same reasons. Incorporating music in
activities, daily chores, and during a break from tasks can make
for a more pleasant experience and day. With the holidays
approaching, consider how you can incorporate appropriate
musical opportunities in your life and in the life of others. When
considering gift giving, think about favorite relaxing or motivating
music the receiver may enjoy, be it an assisted adult, a person
with dementia such as Alzheimers, or a family caregiver.
For more information about Alzheimers, check out
www.alz.org. For a glimpse of the benefit of music in unlocking
metal doors, go to http://www.npr.org/2012/04/18/150891711/for-

Blasted Belly Fat!
Belly fat has been linked with a higher risk of heart
disease, diabetes, cancer and, not surprisingly, this week,
dementia. A study from Boston University School of
Medicine examining the medical records of 733 people found
a connection between having excess visceral fat in middle
age and dementia in later life.
Visceral fat is the type fat found deep inside the
abdomen surrounding vital internal organs. It is active rather
than passive, as was once believed. Visceral fat pumps out
pro-inflammatory cytokines which lead to chronic
inflammation and elevated insulin levels. Excess visceral fat
is associated with pancreatic, colon, breast, and endometrial
cancer.
Men usually start out with more visceral fat than women.
But as women age and reach menopause excess fat tends
to be deposited viscerally rather than subcutaneously, or just
under the skin. The American Institute for Cancer Research
(AICR) warns that a waist measure of 31.5 (80 cm.) or
higher for women and 37 (94 cm.) or higher for men is
indicative of increased risk.
Aerobic exercise and simply eating less seem to be the
best way to get rid of belly fat. The aerobic exercise doesnt
have to be extreme. Walking on a daily basis is the easiest
way to effectively reduce belly fat.
It has long been known that calorie restriction in test
animals is one of the most effective dietary interventions to
lower their cancer risk. Researchers are currently studying
how calorie restriction in humans works relative to tumor
suppression.
The number one way to reduce calorie intake is to put
more plants on your plate. Vegetables and fruits added to the
diet tend to crowd out higher calorie food choices. There is
only so much room on the plate after all!
In addition, eating colorful vegetables and fruits has an
extra bonus. The bright colors in plants contain protective
substances called phytonutrients that are in themselves
health promoting.

Christmas is Celebrated Early at
BSS Thanks to Randy Smith
It may not be December yet, but
Berkeley Senior Services is celebrating
Christmas a little early this year thanks to the
generosity of Randy Smith. New rocking
chairs for the porch of the Senior Center, a
flat screen television, furniture and a new
freezer for the kitchen were of the few
purchases the former Sheriff recently
donated.
Randys endless giving to local
organizations has been above and beyond
anything this community has ever
experienced. Because of his dedication and
loyalty to Berkeley County, when he won the
WV lottery in 2010, the entire county won!
We are overwhelmed by his
kindness! Not only with material things that
he has given, but his willingness to visit the
Center and to learn more about the programs
that are offered to keep our seniors active
within the community, commented Linda
Holtzapple, Executive Director of Berkeley
Senior Services. Randy visited the Center in
September after he was asked to serve as
the Honorary Chairman of the Potters Bowl,
the most popular fundraiser for BSS.
Bethany VanGorden, Nutrition
Supervisor, commented, No words can
express my appreciation for Randys
generous contributions towards making the
BSS kitchen fully equipped to better serve
our seniors! It helps make my job so much
easier too!

ADVANCED DIRECTIVES
The little things make a big difference when it
comes to your End-of-Life Care.
When asking our many seniors if they have any form of Advance
Directives they say to us, No, why should I, my family knows
what to do for me . . . . There are several issues when you have
this mindset. In the health care field, we go by a common
phrase, If it is not in writing, it does not exist. Unfortunately for
the people who go with the, my family knows . . . method, this
usually causes major conflict among the family, and they lose
sight of the intended wishes. In some cases a physician can
assign who they feel as the appropriate family member, or in rare
cases, one can become a ward of the state, and the state can
make the decisions for you.
In the health care field, we come across the situation where
important decisions need to be made in regards to your health.
When you cannot make those decisions for yourself, you need to
have something in place to do this for you. There are many
forms of Advance Directives that help in the time of a health
crisis situation. Feelings and emotions change when we are put
into a stressful situation and asked to make a life changing
decision for our loved ones. If you really want to help your family
make the best decisions for you, put it in writing. The first
misconception is that you have to pay a lawyer to draft and
complete your Medical Advance Directives. This is not the case.
West Virginia has done a great job in having available resources
to our aging population. A great website through the West
Virginia Center for End-of-Life Care (www.wvendoflife.org) offers
educational material and resources that can assist you when
talking with your loved ones about end-of-life decisions. Another
misconception is that you have to assign a person to make your
End-of Life decisions for you. Two methods where a person is
not assigned as your end-of-life decision-maker are the
Physician Orders for Scope of Treatment, i.e. POST form, and
the Living Will. On these types of Advance Directives you do not
assign a specific person(s); instead, you list what type of
interventions you want and how long to continue the
interventions to sustain your life. The last misconception is that if
you complete a Medical Power of Attorney you lose your right to
make any decisions for yourself. On most Medical Power of
Attorney forms, unless purposefully taken out of the document,
the first sentence on the document states that it only goes into
effect when you are no longer able to make the decision for
yourself.
Paperwork can be lost or misplaced very easily. You can protect
your important document(s) by selecting the opt-in box on your
Advance Directive, then faxing it to the WV e-Directive Registry
through WV Health Information Network (www.wvhin.org). They
will hold and make available your Advance Directive to treating
health care providers. This is a great resource in securing your
chosen form of Medical Advance Directive(s). If you need an
Advance Directive notarized, Berkeley Senior Services have
Notaries on staff to help with this process for our senior
population.

Berkeley Senior Services would like to thank the staff at
Briarwood Dental Center and the staff at the U.S. Coast Guard for
their dedication to our seniors during the annual Day of Caring,
which was held September 11th.
14 volunteers from Briarwood Dental Center gathered at the
Senior Center Tuesday morning before 9:00 a.m. On the agenda for
the day was painting 3 different areas within the Senior Center,
pulling weeds, and mulching the grounds at both the Center and the
In-Home Care office, known as the Pink House.
While the Senior Center was getting its beautification, Jason
Watts and his team of volunteers from the U.S. Coast Guard were
busy throughout Martinsburg, Falling Waters, and Hedgesville areas
helping seniors and disabled in their homes with their Fall clean-
up. The team, made up of more than 20 volunteers, was busy
painting, trimming shrubs, cleaning gutters, cutting and removing
trees.
We sincerely appreciate the efforts of both groups and their
hard work commented Linda Holtzapple, Berkeley Senior Services
Executive Director.
The Day of Caring is sponsored by the United Way of the
Eastern Panhandle and gives volunteers an opportunity to help
throughout our community.

activities!
I had the privilege of working closely with Ed
while preparing for the Mystery Dinner Theatre

scenes as a part of the planning committee, but he
kept the entire audience in tears from laughter during
the event. He is such a go getter and we are so

VOLUNTEER OF MONTH OF AUGUST
We are very grateful to Samantha who
generously volunteered almost 60 hours in the
month of August alone to the Berkeley Senior
Center! At the age of 12, this energetic and
bright 7th grader assisted in the BSS Activities
Department and in the Nutrition/Kitchen
Department during her summer vacation. Not
only does Sammie, as we endearingly call her,
capture the heart of all the seniors at the Center,
she is a valuable asset to our team. Always
willing to help, her effortless smile and
enthusiastic attitude carries over to whatever task is asked of her,
including assisting with EGO (Enjoy Growing Older) Dinners served in the
evenings the third Monday of every month at BSS. Although she is an
excellent student (All Honors), active in her middle school choir, and finds
time for her friends and family, she still continues to find time to support
us. This almost teenager restores our faith in the youth of America by
displaying with her actions and generous demeanor a great example of
community spirit. Sammie has been volunteering since February 2011
and thanking her for all she does is overdue! Thank you, Sammie, for
being YOU!
