Kathy Kovach
Two new faces are joining the Van Buren Public Schools Board of Education. Voters Tuesday picked Kathy Kovach and Kelly Owen from a four-candidate field to serve on the school board for the next four years. Incumbent school trustee Toni Hunt, who has been on the board since
could not ask for a better representative. Kelly Owen has a longstanding history of volunteerism and community spirit, she too will be a committed and thoughtful board member. While I am disappointed to lose, I am grateful that the community chose to put these two fine people into office, and I sincerely support and congratulate them.

Editors note
Nov. 11 is Veterans Day. The national holiday recalls the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month when World War I, which claimed the lives of more than 16 million combatants and civilians, ended in 1918. Those who have experienced the horror of any war and survive are forever changed, and think about it often. Some write about it, attempting to grasp its impact on their and their loved ones lives. This is one such story about a poem, written to a mother long after her son and our nation emerged from the Vietnam War.
es the father of three children. Hes been a police ofcer, a K-9 dog trainer, and has worked in heavy truck sales. But in a pitched, violent battle with the Viet Cong on a Christmas Eve more than 40 years ago, he was a corporal with the 25th Infantry Division. Having enlisted for two years in a special program offered by the U.S. Army, Bellevilles Don Schoenberger served one year in Vietnam, and returned home
in 1969. Like many other Vietnam vets, he was not welcomed home with open arms. Immediately after he boarded the plane to return to the United States, he changed from his military uniform into civilian clothes, to avoid advertising that he was a U.S. soldier. He didnt wear a baseball cap with a Vietnam Vet logo on it until he turned 60. Although he didnt advertise his courage and commitment to country in Vietnam, the experience and the memories lingered.
