Satyagraha

Gandhis Theory of Nonviolent Resistance

What does it mean?

Created by Gandhi in South Africa: Truth (Satya) implies love and firmness. (Agraha) means force. I began to call the Indian movement "Satyagraha"because it is a Force which is born of Truth and Love or non-violence. Think about it as the inner strength you need to commit acts of nonviolent resistance. It is a positive, active, and spiritual form of resistance.

Gandhis Code of Discipline

Dont let yourself stay angry, however, tolerate the anger of your opponent. If your opponent hits you, do not strike back. Do not submit to an order that is made in anger, even if you risk harsh punishment for refusing. Avoid insults and swearing.

Gandhis Code of Discipline

Dont resist arrest or property confiscation (unless it isnt your property!) If you are protecting someone else's property, refuse to surrender it even at the risk of your life. If you are arrested, behave with your best manners. As a member of the movement, obey the orders of the leaders or step down if there is great disagreement. Do not expect others to support those who depend upon you.

Steps of the Satyagraha Movement

1. Negotiation and try to resolve 2. Prepare your group for direct action 3. Agitate (Take action) 4. Issue an ultimatum 5. Economic actions: boycott and strike 8. Take over government functions 9. Create a parallel government 6. Refuse to cooperate (noncooperation) 7. Practice civil disobedience (refuse to follow a law)
