Astros 2012 Season in Review
Astros 2012 Season in Review
TEAM NOTES
thE 2012 SEASON: The Astros finished in 6th place in the NL Central Division
with a 55-107 record...HOU was 35-46 at home and 20-61 on the road...2012
marked the 6th time in the last 21 seasons that the Astros have finished
with a record below .500.
GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY: In 2012, the Astros celebrated the 50th anniversary of
the franchise, which began play in 1962...throughout the 2012 season, the
Astros recognized their Golden Anniversary in a variety of ways, including
alumni first pitches, retro uniforms, the selection of an All-Time Astros
25-man Roster and with a Legends Weekend in September which marked
the return of dozens of former Astros and Colt .45s players.
FAREWELL TO THE NL: 2012 marked the Astros final season as a NL team, as the
club will make an historic move to the AL in 2013...in 51 seasons as a NL
club, Houston posted a 3,999-4,134 (.492) record, which ranked 8th in NL
in that span, while qualifying for the postseason nine times and winning
the NL Pennant in 2005...CUBS CONNECTION: The Houston franchise began
NL play in 1962 with a 3-game sweep vs. the Cubs at Colt Stadium, April
10-12, 1962, and wrapped up play as an NL club by taking two of three
from the Cubs at Wrigley Field, October 1-3, 2012.
HISTORIC MOVE TO THE AL: In 2013, the Astros will become the first club in Major
League history to move from the NL to the AL...the move was made by
MLB to give each league the same amount of teams (15)...the Astros will
play in the AL Western Division with the Angels, As, Mariners and Rangers.
UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT: On September 27, Bo Porter was named as the
17th manager in franchise history...Porter, who at 40 is currently the
youngest manager in the Majors, will officially manage his first game in
2013...on August 18, Brad Mills was relieved of his duties as manager and
replaced by Triple A Oklahoma City manager Tony DeFrancesco, who
managed the club for the remainder of the season on an interim basis.
FAREWELL TO THE CAPTAIN: On September 26 vs. STL, Astros Hall of Fame
radio broadcaster Milo Hamilton called his final game...the 2012 season
marked Hamiltons 59th as a MLB broadcaster, which ranks 2nd all-time
to Vin Scullys 64 seasons...Hamilton, who spent the last 28 seasons with
the Astros, also broadcast from the 59th ballpark of his career in 2012
when he called the action during the Astros visit to the Miami Marlins
new ballpark, April 13-15.

Holt had 209.2 IP in 1997...Harrell was also the only NL rookie to hurl a
shutout in 2012...OPENING ACT: In his first start of the season on 4/7 vs.
COL, Harrell hurled 7.0 scoreless innings in a 7-3 win while not allowing a
walk...the last Astros starter to hurl at least 7.0 shutout innings without a
walk in his season debut was LHP Bob Knepper in a 4-0 win on 4/10/86
vs. SF in the Astrodome...Elias.
Most IP - MLB Rookies (2012)
Most IP Astros Rookie (Season)
1.Wade Miley (ARI) - 194.2
2. Lucas Harrell (HOU) - 193.2
3. Wei-Yin Chen (BAL) - 192.2
FIRING BLANKS: From 9/30-10/2, the Astros hurled three consecutive shutouts
while not allowing more than four hits in each game, winning by scores
of 7-0 at MIL, 3-0 at CHC and 3-0 at CHC, respectively...FROM ELIAS: During
that streak, the Astros became just the second club since 1991 with three
straight shutouts with four or less hits allowed, joining the Rangers (5/79, 2008) with that distinction...it is only the second time in Astros history
that they had a such streak, with the other coming 9/23-25 of 1986 with
the following starting pitchers: Jim Deshaies, Nolan Ryan and Mike Scott.
POWER SOURCE: Jed Lowies 16 HR in just 97 games ranked 3rd among NL
SSs and are the 2nd-highest single-season total by a SS in franchise history...the club record is 20 HR, set in 1983 by Dickie Thon.

2. Jed Lowrie - 16 (2012)
3. Miguel Tejada - 14 (2009)
RARE FEATS: RHP Lucas Harrell and LHP Dallas Keuchel were the only NL
rookies to hurl complete games in 2012...Harrell hurled a 1-0, CG shutout
on 6/27 vs. SD and Keuchel went the distance in an 8-1 win on 6/23 vs.
CLE...with his CG, Keuchel became the first Astro to hurl a CG in just his
second ML app. since Randy Niemann on 5/29/79 vs. CIN.
NO FREE PASSES: RHP Wilton Lopez had the lowest walks per 9.0 innings
pitched ratio among all MLB relievers with a 1.09 mark (min. 50 IP)...Lopez
issued just eight walks in 66.1 IP and allowed just four walks after May 31
in 38.2 IP...his 1.09 ratio for the season was the 2nd-lowest in franchise
history to his 0.67 mark set in 2010.
CLOSE CALLS: 75, or virtually half (46.2%) of the Astros games were decided
by two runs or less...they were 17-27 in one-run games and 12-19 in
two-run games.
FROM THE LEFT: From 9/1 through the end of the season, LHPs Xavier
Cedeno (2x21) and Wesley Wright (1x23) combined to hold LH hitters
to an .068 (3x44) batting average.
MILESTONE HR: On April 13, Miami native J.D. Martinez became the first
player ever to homer at Marlins Ballpark in a regular season game when
he hit a 2-run HR off Ed Mujica in the 8th inning...his milestone HR came
in what was the 2nd game in the newly-opened ballparks history.
THATS A RECORD!: In a 1-0 Astros win on 9/11 vs. CHC, the Astros and Cubs
combined to use 11 pitchers, which is a ML record for a 9-inning, 1-0
game...the previous record of 10 pitchers had been done three times
(last: 6/14/11, PIT vs. HOU)...Elias.
EXCLUSIVE K CLUB: RHP Bud Norris tied a ML record by striking out four
batters in the 3rd inn. on 4/24 at MIL...he was the first Astro to accomplish
this feat since RHP Brad Lidge did so on 6/13/04, also at Miller Park...Norris
is the 4th Astros hurler overall to accomplish this feat and the 1st starter
since Mike Scott on 9/3/86 at CHC.
TRIPLE THREAT: In an 11-4 win on 4/16 at WSH, the Astros set a club record
with three triples in a 5-run first inning, becoming the first team with three
triples in a first inning since the Marlins turned the trick on 7/25/95 vs. SF
...additionally, all nine starters in the game hit safely and scored at least
one run, marking the first time an Astros club accomplished this since a
12-1 home win vs. NYM on 5/5/02...Elias.
WITH THE FIRST OVERALL PICK: The Astros selected SS Carlos Correa with
the first overall pick in the MLB First Year Player Draft on June 4...the
17-year-old Correa, who was the youngest player available in the draft,
played amateur baseball at the Puerto Rico Baseball Academy in Gurabo,
P.R....the 6-4 Correa was named a Rawlings First-Team All-American this
season...Compensation Pick: The Astros selected RHP Lance McCullers in
the compensation round of the draft (41st overall pick)...McCullers, 18,
was the 2012 Gatorade High School Player of the Year after posting a
13-0 record at Jesuit High School in Tampa, FL with an 0.18 ERA and 140
